Cute little cafe with large news stand inside that sells newspapers, books, magazines, and calendars. We visited the cafe. I had a mushroom and kale pot pie and a hot caramel latte. The latte was delicious and the pot pie was amazing. Service was great and she was helpful. This place feels like a time warp. I love every memory and feeling the scent and sounds gave me. I highly recommend you walk in to experience the same. It's filled with paper and the smell is better than the library. We walked in on a Sunday morning after picking up protein donuts at Nutrition House. We were greeted by a four person jam band on the violin, maracas, bass, and harmonica. It was so beautiful to be quickly greeted by the music and kind staff. I ordered a ceremonial matcha and it was perfectly naturally sweetened and creamy. If I wasn't overcome with emotion from the nostalgic feels, I probably would have ordered an iced strawberry matcha or a taffy apple latte- yum! My husband got his safety order, an iced mocha and he said it was delicious, and I can confirm! Definitely worth a stop with ample street parking. I was looking for a particular new issue of Fangoria that 15 book and comic shops that I called before did not have. An amazing person at the DePaul Barnes & Noble suggested City News and they had two copies. The owner graciously set them aside for me and I was able to come pick up after work. This small act of looking through the ample stock and making sure I'd be able to purchase it made my week. Really enjoyed coming here. A cozy coffee shop and few bakery. The real treat is being able to walk the aisle of honest to goodness magazines and other periodicals. In 2025 that's a feast for the eyes! This has got to be the largest magazine store in the city. I asked the employee and he told me they carry upwards of 5,000 titles over a year. Amazing! Better than expected place near the Six Corners. It's both a coffee shop and news stand. City News Cafe is a good place to pop in at breakfast and do some reading or some kind of browsing. Has a limited coffee menu and some pastries. The books and magazines section has most of the mainstream stuff but also has some other things. After visiting another place at breakfast, we saw this and came in. It's pretty much as it says. This is a cafe and you can find the news, books, magazines, and other things. It's about $3 for a coffee. The most interesting one was the Zen Matcha. It was a bright green. They have some non dairy milks. Also there's a few non dairy treats in the cooler. It's about $3 each. Ended up getting the Vegan Lemon Yogurt Cake. This had a sourness and tanginess. Looked around at the books. The prices aren't as good on these but there's some that are discounted, so maybe you can find some good stuff. Cool place to come in for the morning or later to relax and have some good coffee. It's bigger than it looks, and there's plenty of seating in the cafe area of it. There's also some treats such as mini cakes in the cooler, some of which are okay for vegans. read more

I enjoyed a warm matcha latte here the other day and they even warmed up my breakfast sandwich for me. I used to work in the area so I've visited quite a few times and it's once of my favorite places to go :) The employees are very friendly and even let you try a chocolate truffle that they make themselves in the store. Big coffee shop fan over here, and now I'm a new big fan of City News Cafe! Super glad to add this spot to my list of favorite coffee joints in the city of Chicago. I came in based on the photos online boasting plenty of seating, because I needed a space nearby to get some work done. What better way to spend an hour or two working than while also exploring a new coffee spot you haven't seen? There IS no better way, friends. City News has been around for years, and is unique in comparison to a lot of modern coffee shops in that it also has a large magazine and book area. It's like an extended newsstand that also makes its own truffles and brews a plethora of different kinds of coffee. Badass, right? I simply ordered a cup of coffee on a Thursday afternoon, and was also given a free truffle, made in-shop. That's unheard of, and in the best way! It truly helps that the truffle was incredible and wrapped in cute blue aluminum foil. If you're looking for a coffee suggestion in Portage Park, City News is a no-brainer. Go, go, go! read more

It's a coffeeshop in conjunction with the book/magazine shop in the back. There's a section of adult-only, restricted area for those who are under 21 next to the restroom. By the way, if you need to use the washroom, ask for the passcode from the clerk/barista on duty. I always like this place, so is hubby who always looks for interesting reading materials since he's kind of a nerd (except his personal hygiene is quite decent). Their matcha green latte is delicious. I heard that their house-made truffles are amazing, yet I haven't had the opportunity to try them. This place has an old-school vibe, and is located within the East Portage Park Six Corners Shopping District. The Portage Park Chamber of Commerce has been working hard to "invigorate" this neighborhood and some national retailers are soon coming to fill the vacancies. I'll start off by saying that the blueberry Danish was pretty good it was a bit on the sweeter side but with the coffee it cut down on the sweetness, and there was just this one bite where I got the blueberry with the cheese and it was amazing the coffee was ok, but the service was amazing. This place was the peace and serenity of my night. I was looking for a relaxing place with an outdoor seating area to read a new book I had started, when I found this place on yelp. The outdoor area is quaint and quiet in a busy area. When you walk in, it is so organized that it pleases the eye. It has a big area for print (magazines, books, etc.) and a spot at the front for the cafe aspect of the place. George was the employee at the time and he was so friendly and helpful. With my coffee purchase, I even received a free homemade truffle (delicious!). The coffee selection was intimidating, but it was cool to try a new brew and George helped me pick it out. This is a great place to support a local business -buy your coffee here and browse all the cool magazines! I've seen magazines with my favorite Euro pop stars and didn't think we would have them here. However, we are lucky to live in a big city like Chicago -they have 'em at City News! They also have European versions of our publications like British Glamour, French Vogue. If you are a magazine buff (like I am) it's cool to be able to buy and see what's popular in other countries (such as music, fashion). The pumpkin latte I got was really good. My only feedback since it's called a "cafe" (and my assumption being "a little place to eat and drink coffee"): a better selection of food. I was hoping to get a little breakfast sandwich or something. They only have sweet rolls, biscotti and those fab looking truffles-but not really any "healthy" options that would keep me sustained for my workday. But hey, what they do have is a start and it's super cute so I'm pleased overall! The addition of the cafe and the whole reconfiguration of the store looks more polished and professional!
