I was excited to find a local store that carried Benjamin Moore Paints. When I went in, unlike other reviewers, the employee there was friendly and helpful. The store itself has a small but good variety of items for home improvement. But I think this is just a supply store for local contractors? Several contractors came in and out with what looked like a bulk order. But when I looked around NOTHING in the store was priced out. When I asked where the prices were on everything they said "The owner asked them not to price anything because the prices change every day." Yikes. Incredibly sketchy. read more

DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!!!! We bought two cans of same label paint but shows different color. When we asked to return, the owner said we add color to the paint. We are not so boring to add color? Would not even look at pictures to try to see what color I wanted for a stain. The customer is not always right but how about finding out what the customer wants. As a first time painter (who is also a female from foreign land), I am very sensitive and scared of hardware stores. To be more precise, of hardware store employees. The stores look manly, and employees of those types of stores usually give you a certain look if you are a young female. Like, "Don't come in the store and ask questions if you don't know what you are doing, we don't have time for your types." Not this store. All the staff there are friendly and helpful. They don't treat you badly because you are an amateur. More over, there are sometimes female employees there! The color specialist (who is not always there, she is there on Saturdays, and 2 other ways which I forget) is sooooo helpful and nice. And she knows what she is talking about, it's like you have your own HGTV's color specialist helping you. She is excited about colors and if you describe to her what you are going for, she imagines it with you and tells you, "oh then you'd love this white, it's warm but not yellowish!" Her name is Meg and she blew my mind! The color she recommended came out awesome. She baby stepped me through my fear of choosing a color. If you're an amateur/DIY painter, this store has everything you might need for a project (and even somethings you won't, like a paint tray liner for easy cleanup). And it's super organized, too! The salesperson in the paint chip area struck the perfect balance of being helpful/making suggestions and letting us do our own thing. Recently, I waited outside a few minutes before the posted 8:00 AM opening as the lights were off. Multiple male customers went in so I followed, and to be polite, I asked if they were open. The person working behind the counter glared at me and said 8:00, as he continued to wait on others. I was told he was the owner, but regardless it was an awful way to treat anyone and a guaranteed way to lose my business, unfortunately there was no way to take back the past twenty years of customer loyalty and spending there. I was on a deadline but refused to spend one more cent there. Fortunately, I remembered that Shattuck Hardware in Arlington also sells Benjamin Moore Paint. At this hardware store I could not have received any better, or more fair treatment as a customer. Huge praise to Ian of that store who exemplifies all the professionalism any boss or owner could hope for in an employee. Maybe the owner of City Paint could shop there and learn something. read more

I bought some Behr paint from Home Depot which made my room a glowing bright yellow. I wanted some advice on how to tone down the color. I had done some internet research but I figured I would ask the experts at Benjamin Moore. I knew I needed a glaze or a tint of some sort. When I walked into City Paint, I started to explain my problem. I couldn't get a full sentence out without being interrupted with a condescending comment. Example: me: I painted my room this color with Home Depot paint. employee: Well we don't have Home Depot paint. We have different colors. me: I know. That is why I'm here. Is there anything I can do to tone down the color? employee: no me: but employee: no. You should never buy Home Depot paint. Honestly, the people at Home Depot were much nicer and more helpful. They offered me suggestions and various options about what I could do with the yellow. I was so surprised because I had expected better service at Benjamin Moore, but instead I left upset and frustrated. read more

As a first time painter this store was extremely helpful. Their color consultant verified what I had already picked out online. I already knew I wanted the Benjamin Moore Aura, which is supposedly the top of the line in paint. The clerk offered me all the extra stuff I needed without letting me buy things I didn't need... Staff is very helpful and friendly and I have been in there nearly everyday as I'm painting my new condo. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a lovely "color specialist" who kindly helps you choose colors and figures out what goes together. Side note: Benjamin Moore's Harlequin Blue #830 is an excellent color. read more

I had 4 really bad experiences in this place. The staff is rude, crude, talks -- no, shouts -- loudly among themselves and ignores customers, not at all helpful -- in fact, hostile. A transaction was mishandled by a spaced out employee and I had trouble getting them them to resolve it. Although this City Paint is the closest to me, I'm moving on! Anywhere but City Paint North Cambridge. If negative stars were an option, these unbusinesslike, unhelpful, nasty jerks would be getting them. Agree with Molly 100%. Condescending isn't the half of it. They tell you wrong, don't listen when you explain true problem, then shout you down when you (foolishly) persist in trying to explain problem. I'm a DIY painter, but no novice, and I prefer Bemjamin Moore paints. I went to this place because I thought they'd know what they were doing. One young guy, fairly pleasant, told me exactly wrong. Older guy (manager? Greek maybe?) told me to come into store when I phoned about problem, so I struggled up there in a snowstorm. He started by shouting at me-- I walked in, said I'd phoned and was told to come to store, so here I was, and he literally immediately started shouting at me. And I do mean shout. I've never been shouted at in a store in my life. So take your pick: pleasant know-nothing, or shouting abusive boss-man, who may know what he's talking about but hard to tell. STRONGLY recommend you shop for BM paint ANYWHERE ELSE. City Paint on Cambridge Street is great (independently operated, a-hole factor isn't contagious among City Paint stores). Connolly Hardware in Brighton has BM paint, and so does Pill Hardware in Central Square. Any and all of them are better to deal with than City Paint North Cambridge-- though admittedly, these a-holes set the bar pretty low. The color consultant is good, and generally pleasant; I've worked with her before. Get her advice and then go get your Benjamin Moore paint mixed elsewhere. We own a painting company and have started doing more business in Cambridge so my husband stopped at City paint to pick up some supplies today. One of the employees an African gentleman was very rude to my husband called him cheap for wanting to exchange a scraper when he found one 1/2 the price. He called him cheap in front a store full of people. Call me crazy but how dare you call anyone cheap I call it smart to want to buy something less expensive. Also he would not honor the price of the scraper that was priced incorrectly. I'm disgusted that anyone should be treated this way. When my husband left enraged at how he was treated I called to speak to an owner or a manager and conveniently neither was around. I would like to give you 0 stars but I don't think this is an option. Being a small business owner. I do not like writing negative reviews that good hurt a business but feel compelled to let everyone know. read more

Too bad I can't rate City Paint at zero stars. This morning I brought in a paint color fan deck from a window manufacturer. I was told, "we don't carry that brand" (no kidding) and he didn't offer to match it or custom mix it for us. Clearly he couldn't be bothered and it was not busy at all. We went to Home Depot in Waltham where we received prompt and courteous service, they matched the three paint colors we wanted. Maybe City Paint should be To The Trade Only? This location is the worst of the City Paint Centers. I will say the color consultant who works part-time is excellent at what she does and is very pleasant. The rest of the idiots there are totally useless. They are unhelpful and friendly. The last three times I went in there it was totally dead inside and yet I got the cold shoulder because I interrupted one clerk's personal phone call so he could ring me up. The second time another clerk was upset because I interrupted his conversation with a co-worker about how he almost punched out another guy at the gym. These guys are townies and idiots and I'm sure will be working there for the rest of their life (which is too bad for us). Go to the store in East Cambridge or Arlington. Not this one. read more

I've got paint here on occasion, and not had great service but fine service - I'm there to buy paint and don't need much in way of customer service, so no big deal. I really want to support local. I just called them recently to check they had a particular paint before driving out there, and the man answering the phone would say 'hello?' That's it. Then hang up literally two seconds later. This happened 3 times within 10 minutes, only answering 'hello?' and hanging up really fast. I thought, OK, maybe he's occupied with someone else, they aren't super professional there, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I googled the paint store to be sure I have the right phone number, I wait 10 minutes and try back. Same gruff guy answers, 'hello, yeah city paint, yeah?' and I said 'That was me calling the last few times and not sure I had City Paint because you ...' and he cuts me off with a raised voice starts semi-shouting 'I say hello, hello, and I hear no one on the other end,....I ' at which time I just hung up because my question had been answered.
