Chang's is usually one of my go-to chains when I travel because I know what to expect. I also found a reservation through OpenTable, so all boxes checked. Unfortunately, this visit missed the mark. Things felt awkward from the start. I arrived for my reservation, but the two young women at the host stand seemed to have trouble locating it. Eventually one suggested checking OpenTable, they found me, and I was seated at a banquette. The seating itself has seen better days. The first spot I sat in was so sunken and worn that I moved farther down the banquette to find a firmer section. You can see the deterioration in my photo. It may be time for some upholstery TLC. My server, Jessie, was polite, but the service felt scripted rather than warm or attentive. I had just finished a long workday and was hungry, so I tried to give everything some grace. But the timing didn't help. I ordered the Beef with Broccoli, white rice and a Buddha Mai Tai. My entrée arrived before my cocktail. The beef and broccoli came out piping hot and tasted good, but the white rice was cold, sticky and lumpy. When my cocktail finally arrived, I mentioned the rice. Jessie replaced it and immediately asked, "Is this better?" before I'd even had an opportunity to taste it. The replacement was somewhat warmer, but still not the steaming-hot rice I expected alongside a freshly prepared entrée. At that point, I was hungry, tired and ready to call it a night. I finished dinner, ordered the key lime pie to go, paid my bill and headed back to the hotel. The frustrating part is that nothing here was disastrous. The beef and broccoli was hot and good. My cocktail was fine once it arrived. My order was corrected when I spoke up. Jessie was polite. But hospitality is more than completing the individual steps. Timing, awareness, warmth and anticipating what is happening at the table make the experience--and those pieces were missing. P.F. Chang's is usually one of my reliable choices when I'm traveling. This particular location just didn't deliver the experience I've come to expect from the brand. Perhaps it was an off night, but next time I'm in Memphis, I'll probably explore another option.
