I forgot the name of the drinks, but it was a matcha crema and a coffee crema. The matcha crema was very delicious it had a hint of vanilla and had a light sweetness that didnt overly power the flavor of the matcha, VERYY creamy though, still delicious. The coffee crema, however, is very watery. I prefer my coffee similar to a vietnamese coffee, but milky. But with this drink it was watery coffee, it wasn't strong or had the sweetness the matcha had, i'm pretty sure they used the same cream top. I preferred the matcha more. Overall, there was great customer service and the cafe wasn't busy at all. There was pretty decent amount of seating areas for singles or groups of people. Kind of sad because I loved Civil's breakfast, but like all corporate entities things always get worse. Their housemade to order breakfast items are now premade and refrigerated, AND more expensive for the decrease in quality. The bacon egg sammie used to be $12 and made to order. Now it's wrapped up cold premade and it's $15. Needless to say it wasn't as good. The previous sandwich used high quality dark yolk eggs, thick cut bacon, and a soft brioche bun. This one is the opposite, though the Kaiser roll wasn't that bad. This'll probably be my last time buying the food here, and I doubt I'll come here for the drinks as often. read more

Civil Coffee is in the middle of Fashion District in downtown LA, but not the part of downtown serviced by Metro rail but still walkable from 7th St / Metro Center (or you can transfer to the DASH E). I got the Liquid Gold (matcha + lavender syrup) slightly less sweetened, which was perfectly sweet. I only get matcha with almond or cashew milk if I can because I find dairy milk too overpowering, so it was really nice that the drink came with cashew-almond milk. The syrup was really good with both the matcha and the coffee (the Arroyo) but they were different experiences. The matcha taste was not as strong as the coffee, but the syrup was significantly more floral and noticeable in the matcha as a result. The drinks were large and it wasn't super expensive. There is SO much seating, really fast WiFi (I was on a Zoom for half the time I was there), AND outlets. What more can a girl ask for?? read more

I'm actually not too sure about Civil coffee and I'm going to go back a couple more times in the hopes of increasing my rating. The first time I went I tried one of their specialty coffees the vanilla oaty and it was just fine. As it's a specialty coffee, I didn't really have anything to compare it to so the next time I went in I ordered both a breakfast sandwich (EBC sammie) and a house chai latte. Now I love chai. What I don't love is watered down chai. And while i know ginger is essential in chai, this kind of just tasted off. Like the wellness shots you get from juice bars. The sandwich was good and despite the fact that I watched the guy handle bacon with his bare hands previously (I know it happens, watching it just gives me the ick) I decided to try it anyway and it was a really good sandwich. Wish I was coming here for just for the food but the coffee is supposed to be great too. So after drinking the chai, I realized that the specialty drink I had during my first visit might have been watered down too. Service was good and I like the atmosphere. Very clean aesthetic. I feel really bad about these 2 stars but I can't get over messing up my chai. Going to spend some more money here in the hopes of increasing the rating later, especially since the menu looks great and has some really good options. read more

Super cool urban coffee shop, probably one of the nicest in DTLA. A great place to sit and hang out. Might be busy during peak hours, but service is usually fast. Their coffee is pretty good. The competition is pretty steep in this part of town, and they do a nice job. Their cold brew is pretty good. Options are somewhat limited but they have all standard LA coffee shop offerings. They also have some fun signature drinks. Can't speak on their food, but they have small bites. Their prices are a bit high. I understand that rent has to be paid, but in over two hundred cafe visits in my short lifetime, this Civil location was one of the most expensive. Not too close to the Metro, but still walking distance. Street parking can be tough to find. read more

On a cold blustery day, I walked into the warmth of Civil Coffee and was instantly happy. Their menu selections for both food and coffee were plentiful, plus tons of other refrigerated drinks. I was surprised to get to Civil Coffee on a weekday and not find it completely packed. There was some street construction detering visitors I think, but typically this is a great shop to study or remote work from. There were also some people having a team meeting so it works for that, too. Comfy seating in a variety option with some stool seats, some regular chairs and my personal go to - booths! Their internet was fast and worked perfectly. I came to Civil Coffee after having internet issues at a nearby coffee shop, so was very happy that I encountered no issues here. Staff was friendly and had my food & drink out to me quite quickly. Their cold brew was solid, drank that ish up! The breakfast burrito was divine! Packed with cheese, eggs and bacon, I was in morning foods heaven. The EBC was $9.50 and though not one of those humongous burritos, it was very filling and perfection for me. There's tables and bar seating with AC which makes for a nice spot for working (they do have a $1 surcharge per drink if you get your drink for here). The Arroyo - love their lavender syrup. It's not overwhelmingly floral because you can still taste the espresso. The Figueroa - love the cinnamon and condensed milk. It comes with a small Maria cookie. You can taste the espresso more in this latte. If you want something lighter or sweeter, I'd recommend the Arroyo. read more

I got: The Figueroa. I knew it had dairy in it and still decided to get it. I wanted to taste how the drink was intended to be (without altering or substituting it with a non dairy milk) and I wasn't a fan of the taste nor was my stomach. This is no fault to this establishment. I'm just not a fan of milk nor condensed milk (dairy milk in general). It was a lot of dairy and I definitely have sensitivity to it. Friendly employee. When I went, I was the only one there and there was one employee working. She was really nice. Love the interior and the setup of everything. Cool vibes for sure. I would come back here, but will be ordering a latte with oat milk next time. Parking was easy to find! I didn't have to circle around again and again, lol. Store signs say they're open at 7am. I'm outside at 9:15 and all doors are locked. There were no signs outside indicating that it was closed for whatever reason. There were employees inside who didn't even have the consideration to let me know why or what time they would open today 10/22/25. They were just signing that they were closed. No clue as to when they were opening. Poor service even when it was open the other days. All of them on their phones or just talking to each other. And when ordering, there was no customer service whatsoever. I've heard great things about the other location in Culver City but sadly not reflected in the downtown location. Third wave, Mexican owned coffee shop, offering some of the best coffee and pastries in town. They also serve a small menu of light fare like avocado toast and breakfast burritos. The shop is sleek and modern, filled with natural light. They have a La Marzocco espresso machine, pastries from Sugar Bloom Bakery, and use thoughtfully sourced, local ingredients. I came in one hour before closing, and (as to be expected), only a single donut remained in the pastry cafe. It was a matcha cake donut, and among the best matcha pastries I have ever had. Moist, not too sweet, and packed with earthy matcha flavor. I've never had a bad pastry from Sugar Bloom, but this was next level. Their "Figueroa" was an exceptional specialty drink that left me wanting more. The full flavors of the espresso were enhanced by condensed milk and cinnamon, and the Maria cookie on top was a thoughtful touch. The barista working was polite, and genuinely friendly. 10/10. read more

I love Civil coffee original location in Highland Park. It's absolutely one of my favorite coffee shops in LA. This was my first time going to the downtown LA location and I would not make it a point to go here unless I was already in downtown for something. The coffee was very good like it always is. No problems with the coffee, the service, it's a cute little shop once you make it inside etc. Love Civil. The reason I hadn't gone here is because it is really in one of the most difficult sections of Downtown Los Angeles to go and park. The parking lot around the corner which I've parked in over the weekend for five bucks, this was during the week and it was $20. So that was out. I parked a few blocks away on Olympic and my meter parking was expensive but still doable. My friend that I was meeting got a meter spot across the street and didn't realize that it was something absurd I think it was like 1quarter ($.25) per two minutes. So for people who live and work in downtown and can just walk over it's a fantastic coffee place but for anyone who would be traveling there be forewarned. read more

I tried their salted vanilla oat latte at the unique market art fair and haven't stopped thinking about it since. Well I actually had two because the first one was so good I couldn't just have one. Whoever thought up putting salt in coffee is an absolute genius. This coffee had such a perfect balance of salty and sweet that perfectly complimented their full coffee flavor. I loved it so much in fact that I drove to their DTLA location before work at the crack of dawn just to get another one even though it's very much out of my way. I've been to there other location before. This is an amazing coffee shop with really good food too. One of the few coffee shops where you can actually taste the coffee. The seating space is great very open and bright. It's also a short walk to the flower district and other shopping. I stumbled into this place after eating a burrito from Wake and Late couple blocks down the street.
