I previously wrote a scathing review of CJ's, and it was well deserved at the time. Three years later I finally gave this place a second chance, and I'm glad I did. We went here this past Friday with some friends after work for dinner. Unlike my last experience the food was delicious and the beer was good. I again tried the beer sampler, and this time did not find a single one that I disliked. We'll definitely be back, though maybe when its a little slower. My only dislike this time was the smell of the place. You enter through the bar area which smells of spilled and spoiled beer. Plus it was a Friday during Lent, so the smell of fried fish mixed with stale beer reminded me of sweaty feet. My wife and I had a very disappointing experience. The beers were very underwhelming, aside from the Red (We also tried the Golden Lager and IPA). The food was downright awful. We got the chicken tacos special. The meat was very dry and bland. The decor could certainly use some updating, most notably the glass racks behind the bar. I feel bad for any employee standing underneath it when it decides to give way, as it is so bowed that the shelf is smiling at you. They have the best "Detroit Style Pizza" around. Perfect crust - I wouldn't order anything else there (I think the rest is straight off of the Sysco menu, except maybe the Jambalaya which has been mentioned by a few.) We sat on the outdoor patio, perfect night! The service was fabulous and would give that 5 stars! Unfortunately the food was mediocre and average at best. We had the Beer Cheese Dip, that was great however the homemade potato chips were raw and the pretzels were extremely hard, as though they had been microwaved. We had sweet potato fries, soggy, raw, and floppy. The Southwest salad was decent, very spicy dressing, and the Artichoke Dip was awful. It had a funny taste and consistency, cheesy but flavorless, avoid it! I don't know if we'll be back. read more

CJ's has become one of our fallback standards when we want good food but don't want to drive too far. On our most recent visit they were running two lunch specials. A black n blue burger and a buffalo chicken sandwich. I'd been craving blackened fish, but after reading the special board I had to have the burger. It was juicy and well blackened, a little heat and flavor but not so much it burned. Then the blue cheese worked in with it and oh my! They really should have this baby on the menu all the time. Quite easily the best thing I've eaten there! My husband tried the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was really good. What set it apart was that they put avocado slices on it. My husband is not a fan of avocado but I convinced him to give it a try and he admitted it was a really good combination. It paired well with the hot sauce and the texture contrast was nice too. He even said he'd order buffalo sandwiches that way in the future! That's a huge compliment! Some of the other items we've really liked at CJ's were the fish and chips, the cap'n crunch chicken (seriously sinful and all kinds of awesome!), the burgers (hello Eddie!), the nachos (exactly what pub nachos should be), and the pizza. But the most have is the rootbeer. We love to try homemade rootbeers and this has to be one of the best we've found. A lot of other places try to make one flavor note stronger than the rest, often the peppermint (gag!), but CJ's has a nice balance while still having a strong yet lush flavor. It's thick, it's smooth, it's not over carbonated, there's a nice warmth of spice and sweetness of vanilla...it's about perfect! Seriously, we've bought the Growlers (yes, plural) and taken them on trips with us. When we moved away for a few years we'd snag a couple growlers when we visited to take back home with us. And this was one of the first places we hit up when we moved back to MI. Good food, great rootbeer, always good service...what more can you ask for? Beer: Haven't had a bad one yet; but I'll keep trying for Yelp's sake. Their Wheat's are my favorite. Growlers are great. Grab one when you're picking up a pizza. Pizza: Deep Dish is awesome. My Wife loves the Veggie (so that's what we usually get). But the Hawaiian is awesome, and so is the Buffalo Chicken w/ Franks Red Hot. Don't forget to order the Cheesy Bread; it's really good. Food: it's just so-so. Generic American. The "All You Can Eat Fish" is bad; it's the fish sandwich patty without the bun (and the fish sandwich is not great either) Just order a pizza. Parking: The Parking lot is tiny; Carpool or be prepared to circle for an open spot. Conclusion: Order a take-out Pizza with Cheesy Bread and a Growler. read more

One of my favorite places to go!!! The best seasoned fries I have ever had. I love the beer here too! The deep dish BBQ chicken pizza is by far the best pizza I've ever had. First let me state there is no better bar pizza in Oakland County and the VAT 33 IPA is hoppy and delicious, so no complaint there. Thankfully they have provided outside seating for those of us not cowed by dictatorial governors, and who wish to support our favorite restaurants and staff. Sadly one of the staff (Andrea who I presume is a dictatorial governor in training) didn't get the message, that it takes a little extra effort our part to brave the cold and enjoy a pizza and a couple of beers. Our pizza was brought to the table at 7:50 followed by a last call and bill at 8;00 PM, we managed to eat our pizza by 8:20 but were kicked off the curb before we could even begin to finish our second beers. Nothing better when dining than being told that you are the last people holding the staff up from going to their next whatever. As a long time and formerly loyal patron I wish Dave and GM Bill the best of luck in future but I can no longer support this establishment. When the lunatics run the asylum (especially the ones with all the warmth and charm of an unflushed toilet) there's just no reason to return. Good beer. Mediocre food. I had a chicken breast...thing...once that was drowning in money mustard - basically inedible. Also had a good burger. Better than most of the Coney Islands I've been in. Note: what is it with this state and Coney Islands? They almost universally suck. My advice - stick with simple foods and you'll be OK. Anything else and food is on par with a Chili's. I grew up in the area, even attending this place after every home volleyball game with the entire team and parents in high school, over 10 years ago. Hadn't been back until this week. I must say, I now know why our parents loved it so much. My hubby and I started with a beer sampler each along with the calamari app. All was fantastic! Our fast fav brew was the lower straits stout. We even picked up a to-go Growler( 64oz. Jug.of beer that can be refilled). Service was great from the gal who seated us quickly to the server and even the bus boy who was friendly and helpful. We ate a veggie wrap and a salad with salmon which were all great! I also have heard the pizza is great too. Their mug club seems super worth it and we will surely join. A local gem! read more

Myself and a friend walked into CJs last evening because it was close by there were 4 empty tables all dirty. I don't know what the hostess was doing but her head was down until she decided to go to the dining room and look around(we were in the bar). The two bartenders were talking with their backs to the customers. At one point a bartender looked in our direction and then did something else. Another, older woman approached the very young hostess and talked to her without attending to us. We left. Been coming to CJ's for several years and it's pretty good pub grub, but I'm not sure what's going on right now. Service is spotty in the dining room but usually good in the bar. They used to have great salads but they've removed the good ones, and the quality of what's left is terrible. Ordered a house salad with salmon and the tomatoes were bad, the cucumbers were wilted and slimy, and the salmon piece was small and burnt. Quite a change from the past quality. Stick with pizza and burgers. The fries are breaded, so pass on those unless you like breaded fries. read more

Absolutely love Cj's!!! It is my all time go to restaurant close to home when we feel like a night out. We also have a lot of friends and family that don't live near by, so when they are out this way we always rant and rave we have to eat there. The beer selection is great I love all their standing and rotating taps, although the lower straights stout is my favorite. The food is always spectacular with large portions. I highly recommend the pizza with a side of cheese bread! It is to die for and for two people the small will still leave you some to take home for later (we all know pizza is always better cold!) the dessert menu is also great, I crave their caramel pretzel beer mug. I know they have another location in Plymouth, but have never been there. The commerce location is a must try, you're neglecting your taste buds if you don't! read more

Coming back from a U of M football game, thought we would try CJs at Compuware arena in Plymouth MI on Beck Road. It has been open since 2008, as a CJ's Brewing Company pub but they don't have a feedback site for that location. I can understand why. The pub wasn't crowded except for hockey kids and families. The service, beer and food were below average along with being overpriced. My wife ordered Guinness and they brought her a bottle. This is a pub? I ordered a Grand Rapids micro brew from Founders, a Scotch ale called Dirty Bastard. After my wife got her bottled Guinness, 5 minutes later the disinterested waitress came back and said they didn't have any of what I ordered although it is on their menu. Did I mention the cold slab of St Lois ribs that took 30 minutes to serve, and came cool with cool fries. My wife's hamburger order was also incorrect. The kitchen at McDonald's could give them lessons. The waitress wasn't rushed but was MIA for the evening. The best thing I can say about the overpriced ($40 for a burger, lousy ribs, a bottle of Guinness and glass of ale) experience is that parking was easy. I can understand why. Don't bother stopping in unless you want to be disappointed. read more

CJs is a very underrated restaurant and not well known but should receive more credit, it should become more popular. CJ's deep dish barbecue chicken pizza beats Jets's popular BBQ chicken pizza by a lot. The ambiance of the restaurant is more of a hangout place but is delightful. It is like sports pub, but still has delicious food. The nightlife is very hype, busy and fun especially when a home game is playing. I recommend this place. read more

We've been going to this place for a few years now, usually Friday nights when is packed; the food is OK, the kids enjoy it, but for me the main selling point is the beer - it's a brewery so you'd expect fresh / good beer which normally is what I've experienced. The reason I'm writing this negative review and also the reason this was the last time they'll be taking my money is related to the service; I've ordered my usual golden lager and I got a flat / soapy tasting glass of beer that seemed like it was collected from the leftovers from other customers or it sat in that glass for hours. I asked our server (an obnoxious dude) if the beer is fresh and he's answer was "it's a brewery!" (kind of - "get a life man, I don't care what your problem is"); I've asked to talk to a supervisor and I got young lady (probably a coworker) which agreed that the beer looked flat due to the lack of any bubbles or foam in the glass and offered to take the beer off the bill or to get a different one. Every Friday afternoon for the last 16 years a group of us have been going out for a couple of drinks and appetizers to unwind and vent about out week. On many of weeks we have gone to CJ's brewery. Never had a problem with the food, drinks or service until today. Today we were a group of 5. Two of us were celebrating birthdays and we were buying drinks for those that were celebrating. One in our group bought 2 drinks for others. When she ordered a 3rd drink for herself, the server told her she didn't feel comfortable serving her. Now she was drinking a mixed drink and there was more mix than drink. My friend was not drunk, not sloppy, not slurring her words, not loud, was not approached by server or manager to offer to call a cab or uber for her, and had plenty to eat over several hours. We called the manager over to ask what the problem was, and he said it was up to the individual server. The server only looked at her bill and saw she had 4 drinks on her bill and was afraid to serve her the fifth drink. Not realizing they were 3 different types of drinks and they all weren't hers. She was simply paying for others. Needless to say our enjoyable afternoon turned into a disappointing event, won't be going back, ever!!!! read more
