This a fabulous casual spot btw Amagansett and Montauk to get traditional Long Island summer cuisine. They offer locally sourced clams and oystets, flounder, and of course Maine lobster. Despite the casual vibes, it is costly and there is a slight surcharge for using a credit card. I shared steamers and a lobster BLT and one iced tea - total cost over $100 with tip. The lobster BLT was loaded with lobster and came with plenty of fries. All seating is outdoors, and they have plenty of umbrellas. They had clean toilets. (I was surprised they had them because of the shack like appearance of the restaurant). Service was better than some restaurants I have been to lately. The worst experience we've had in Montauk. Avoid at all costs! Tourist trap. Do not waste your money and time here. Make sure to ask what MP is because we were charged $45 for the worst lobster roll of our life. Do not get the hot lobster roll--it was absolutely bland. Tasted like old, rubber lobster. Zero seasoning. Zero redeeming features. It doesn't even come with fries. Came with a tiny, sauce sized container of the stalest, blandest slaw we've ever had. All the "bowls" of soup are served in tiny paper cups. $10 clam chowder and $12 lobster corn bisque were not good. Too many thickening agents in both gave a very strong, off taste. Chowder was slightly better than bisque. Bisque had zero lobster meat in it. All corn and potatoes. Do not get. Very disappointing. Service was non existent. Waitstaff looked like they were in pain from having to be there. This is a shack on the road with prices of a reputable establishment. Went to Montauk and tour around the place and on my way back I checkout this place. I'ved heard from friends that this place is always busy but I was determined to try it. I park on the side of the street because it was definitely packed that you cannot park in their parking area anymore. Both sides of the street is full of cars parking. I sat on the bar because I was by myself. That was pretty easy but I can already tell that when you're in a group its not easy to get a table. They only have outdoor seating and it can get hot. Theirs lots of people with their kids and they have some cornhole and I think a lot more to keep the kids entertain. Absolute 10/10. Stopped in for dinner on our way home from a long weekend in Montauk for a wedding. We came hungry and we left completely stuffed and wanting more. LOCATION: The Clam Bar is located on the north side of Montauk Highway (27), making it a popular spot for people heading to and from the End. ATMOSPHERE: Cheerful yellow umbrellas shade white patio tables and chairs. A red stand highlights the roadside eatery's name. FOOD: I'm sure other dishes are not as bad, but I'm unlikely to try them after this disappointing experience. I ordered whole belly fried clams ($28) thinking clams are their specialty given the bar's name. I received an unseasoned pile of fried batter, with some clams with traces of sand still present. This was positioned next to fries that were bland. Sorry I didn't see mixed reviews and uneven depictions of clams here. You like an East Hampton restaurant with outdoor summer vibes? If you do, the this place is for you? This is an all outdoor seating and situated along the Montauk Highway. It's not an upscale eating experience but has great outdoor seating and solid food. We had the steamers (really fresh and on point), lobster rolls and clam bellies. This hit the spot and would recommend it in a second. This is a very casual place but it has all the summer vibes you would want. Service is good...but you aren't there for that...you are there for classic food and great outdoor dining with an East Coast vibe. For what it is...it hits all the points. So many years ago while beach camping at Hither Hills we came by this place and to this day I still remember the steamers! So delish. For YEARS we've always passed by here to/from Montauk and have been intrigued because it's always packed. A line of cars and a full parking lot always....must be great right? Well, we finally got the opportunity to try this spot (off season) and left underwhelmed. -Clam Strips: 5/5, honestly these were great. Find me something deep fried that isn't. But they give you a TON of them which (in my opinion at least justified the price) but they were no better or different than fried clam strips anywhere. -Hot lobster roll: 2.5/5, these were the reason we came here, and also what we expected to be the highlight....unfortunately they were far from spectacular. I'll admit they gave a lot of lobster meat on the roll (which I would hope for $44 each) but it clearly wasn't fresh. Some pieces were inedible as they were just crusty, and other pieces were very rubbery/fishy We were both shocked being that this place is always mobbed. It led us to believe it must be great, and worth the stop...maybe it was because it's off season, or because we were one of the first customers there this day and it was leftovers from the day prior? But overall for $150 we definitely were shaking our heads and don't have any intention of recommending or trying it again. read more

First and last time I will ever go there bc of the nasty owner. Spent $100 on 2 lobster rolls and when I was finished I took a piece of my bread and tossed it to a little bird next to me. The owner picked it up and asked how I would like it if he threw food on the floor at my house. On our way to the beach, we decided to stop by for lunch and had a great experience! It's a casual outdoor restaurant literally off of the highway. The tables have shaded umbrellas which was a must given how sunny it was. They have a small bar area and some entertainment with corn hole and a giant 4 in a row game. What made it 5 stars? - excellent service: we arrived on a Sunday around lunch time and got seated within a few minutes. The staff were friendly and professional. Despite the heat, everyone was working hard, greeting customers, and smiling. 10 stars just for their customer service!! They were really efficient at cleaning tables and making sure to seat customers as soon as possible. - food was great. Look, it's a casual outdoor restaurant along the highway so temper your expectations. The portions were very generous and filling (THANK YOU for not skimping!). The food was fresh and tasty. - plenty of parking along the highway or next to the restaurant - staff checked in with us throughout the meal, constantly refilling out water pitcher and drinks. There were some good and bad when we visited. The place is big on the Montauk vibes, pebbles on the ground, very near to the ocean. When the weather is nice, it feels great to grab a meal at one of their patio tables. Food: the fried tuna bites were the surprise hit. Surprisingly large and tastes very good. Was there the other evening and saw this woman toss a tiny piece of bread to a bird on the deck by her. Out of nowhere the owner comes shouting and yelling at this woman, picked up the piece of bread and then tossed it on the other persons plate (not even the woman innocently feeding the bird), picked up the plate and tossed it in the garbage. Clam bar is a super cool seafood spot right off of the highway between Amagansett and Montauk. There is a lot of space for parking and all of the seats at Clam Bar are outside. Most spots have umbrellas but be prepared to be in the sun. The seafood here is very fresh and there are options for everyone to choose from! We started with Tuna bites which are large fried tuna bites with a tartar sauce. They were tender and delicious! I grew up on great clam bar food when it was operated by the previous owners and quality was a priority (not just profitability). tonight I was beyond embarrassed to host friends on their last night visiting. The lobster on the rolls was clearly frozen, overcooked, dry and tasteless. The extra butter requested was oil, definitely not butter and left a sour taste in our stomachs. No clam bellies because it is "too expensive" to source and the tuna sandwich was bland at best despite horseradish mentioned on the menu. The meal required a trip to CVS for medicine to address immediate reactions to the poor quality of the food. this childhood memory is best left in the past. I am striking this one off the list. My friends and I ordered takeout at Clam Bar and I gotta say it really hit the spot. We got a variety of items and everyone in the group was super happy with their ordered. I got the fish 'n chips and it was huge. It was a really nice, giant piece, of flaky fish, battered, and fried to perfection. Since we just got takeout I can't speak to the service. We called it in ahead of time and it was ready to go once we got there. I would certainly head back over and check out their "patio" the next time I am in the area. Ok listen. The best hands down lobster over salad ever!!! Fresh sweet lobster lumps over a spring salad is to die for and Clam Bar does it sooooo well. Highly recommend their spring mix, dressing was 10/10. White peach sangria was really good too, enough to share with four people at a price of 30$. Whole clam belly was a bit too fishy for me so I'd recommend getting just the clam strips next time. Our white wine and garlic mussels were amazing as well. But the star of the show was definitely the crab cake over salad and the lobster over salad FYI I've seen their lobster roll and they LOAD up the bun so you are getting the best bang for your buck out here. Clam Bar is the absolute definite spot to come for Lobster Rolls, Cold Beer, Relaxing Vibes, and a great lunch stopover. This location has been a staple for my girlfriend for a lot of her life, she used to come here as a kid on her trips out to Montauk with her family and it still reigns supreme as the place to go, and I agree. We stop in for lunch after checking out the Montauk Farmers Market on Thursday and the lot was packed, and I park my Bronco in front of another Bronco, and I knew that one looked familiar. Walk up to the front and notice Dave Portnoy from Barstool with his girlfriend bought to sit and have lunch, and the craziest thing Is I knew the past few days he was out east trying Pizza in Greenport, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island etc and I literally manifested, "wouldn"t it be crazy if I ran into him" well there he was. There was a line to sit since they were trying to regulate flow of people and not slam the kitchen, so we put our name on the list and went to the bar to get "waiting beers" which were cold and delicious. Wasn't too long before we were seated, nice shady area, friendly server, and I got a Lobster Roll (Must Have) and she got the Chicken Fingers (Childhood Memory) The Lobster roll is BANGIN if I can say so, and I applaude the Lobster to Roll ratio, it was a solid mix, this thing was filled up nice, and good to have it that way because it comes in at a whopping $32 for the roll. Wild. Hamptons. I know. But this is a luxury treat and I don't do this everyday, so I had it. Was delicious. Chx fingers and fries were exactly that, $12 I got the courage to go up to Dave and chat a bit, didn't want to bother much since he's just chilling having lunch, but that was a cool celeb spotting. Disappointing compared to other seafood shack experiences. Menu seemed small. Ordered Fish & Chips- 2 planks flounder with undercooked, limp, fries. (When only 2 items appear on plate, you need both to be stellar). Lobster Roll was good, not great. Lobster ok, crunch from celery, dressed but not overdone, roll was limp like the fries & sandwich seemed small. Again, when working with only a handful ingredients, everything has to be stellar including technique. Half the joy is the contrast between cool, lemony, lobster salad & hot, buttery-crisp, toast of the roll. Route 27 is a main drag in and out of Montauck. After a day of sight-seeing and beach sitting, we hit the Clam Bar. On a nice sunny day, you can enjoy lovely seafood, watch the train go by, enjoy the sun. Decided on the whole belly clams. Little critters fried to perfection. Hard to get in upstate New York so I had to get them. SO had the fried calamari. Tartar sauce is a given with their seafood dishes, but we opted for the addition of cocktail sauce. Side was the usual cole slaw which was your typical crunchy cabbage with a decent mayo dressing (not too sweet). I must say that the staff were very helpful bringing a cup of water for my service dog. Parking is adequate for being on the side of the road. Better late than never right? I was out in Montauk for the first time late summer 2021 and passed this clam shack twice to and from my destination. I had to stop because not only was the place packed but I had never had a lobster roll before and had to see what the hype was all about. Nearly $30 for a lobster roll?! Guessing that's the Hamptons pricing I've seen others mention. Carefully getting set up to eat this bad boy in my car you could see that there's nearly an entire lobster on this roll with just enough mayo and spices to bring it all together. The sandwich and the lobster were incredibly fresh and packed with flavor. I'd say the sandwich is worth it as a treat if you find yourself in these neck of the woods. Eat here! read more

This review will have a special meaning for me for quite a long time, but I'll throw that little reason as to why at the end of my write up. For now, let's just talk about how Clam Bar can be really darn tasty. If you've ever driven out to Montauk, you probably know Clam Bar just by passing it on Montauk Highway (it's on the left a little further up past Lunch Lobster Roll). It's dark red/white shack with yellow and white umbrellas are hard to miss. Plus there's usually a hefty handful of cars parked along the side of the road. I had always wanted to stop here and so to finish off the school year (teacher), it sounded like a great meal idea. It was a little before 3 (late lunch) when we arrived there this past Friday and strolled up to be seated. Interestingly, the servers give you a view of one giant menu stationed near your table. I was looking for anything seafood and thought I'd snack on some clam strips, but alas, some how the clam bar was out of them! How this happened (no really, you're called Clam Bar and you don't have clams?), I don't know, but the back up choice of a lobster salad roll was entirely delicious. So was the potatoey clam chowder. I will say the surprising stunner of flavor came from the fish and chips. Massive pieces of heavily fried flounder were so flaky and delicious (and maybe a tad oily) that I kept on repeating how glorious they were. What wasn't entirely glorious was the slight disappearance of our waitress. She seemed to be a little MIA, but I wasn't in any rush (you'll find out why shortly). It gave me more time to sip on Clam Bar's 40 Summers Later draught beer that was light, a little malty, and totally worked well with the meal. Pricing? Not too shabby and helping to sum up a lunch that I won't soon forget. Overall, Clam Bar is a solid seafood spot and one worthy of that u-turn if you're heading east towards Montauk. You'll find some good grub to satisfy your cravings and perhaps, check off a desire to eat here that you might have had. What sets this Montauk roadside seafood shack apart from the competition are the "tuna bites" and the "spicy crab and sweet corn chowder", according to a few longtime Hamptons homeowners who told me that Clam Bar is the only one that sells them. Patrons also come here to feast on the Lobster BLT. Credit cards are accepted here whereas not long ago they were not. WiFi is required for Internet service due to the notoriously widespread Hamptons cell phone dead zone. So be sure to enable WiFi calling on your smart phone, especially in case you need to make an emergency call to 9-1-1. Or download an app that provides cell phone access without internet or WiFi. The food was just okay. The spicy crab and seafood corn chowder was creamy and highly seasoned. However, the fresh clams on the half shell were too briny. The batter used for on the crispy Fishwich sandwich was too thick, but the flounder was unbelievably fresh and moist. The cole slaw was so-so. The soggy crust of the key lime pie ruined what would have been a good dessert. I like crunchy crusts, like the one I eat at The Chowder Bar (in Bay Shore). Service was quickly and professionally provided by friendly staff. Prices are Hamptons competitive, so expect to pay dozens of dollars for a three-course meal. 1950s music played in the background, but the shack has been around for only 40 years.
