Went to Clarklewis for dinner last week while on a trip to Portland. Everything was good overall, but not great. I think with the wealth of Portland restaurants, I'd try others before coming back here, but it still was enough for 4 stars food wise- however, there was what I felt a very deceptive fee added to the ending bill that we asked about, and I'll elaborate later on. The good: the cocktails were great. I had a beet cocktail, and I don't remember what my friends had, but they enjoyed theirs as well. The service was also quite lovely. My main (the salmon) was very tasty, and my friend's (the short rib) was good as well. The not so good: the appetizer was appallingly small and overpriced- 21$ for two scallops! I've never seen that before and was pretty taken aback. It tasted good, but that was pretty ridiculous. The thing that left the most sour taste in our mouths of the evening was an extra 10-15% "service fee" that was tagged onto the bill. The explanation for what this fee was had been added to the bill and the menu, but it was not clear at all. It seemed to partially imply that it was a COVID service fee to supplement workers wages, partially that they no longer were a tipped establishment, but then partially just that the restaurant was pocketing the money to recoup most funds during COVID. We finally asked our server what it actually meant because we didn't want to stiff him on tips and were not sure- essentially the restaurant raised wages slightly and uses that fee to supplement worker pay, but only something like 3% is actually split amongst the waitstaff and the house takes the rest. This seems like a VERY shady and underhanded way to increase restaurant profit, while harming the workers - we were confused and thought we didn't need to leave an additional tip before asking, and so I'm sure that many parties do not leave tips at all because of the confusion, so in fact your workers are earning less than if you'd just not add that fee. Raise your prices by a few dollars an entree, or something- but don't try to add pretend beneficial surcharges to the tab when they don't help the people it's purporting to. read more

Date night out with Wife N. We're still getting our footing back after 16 months of COVID restrictions, and this is only the second dinner out in the past year. Started with drinks. I've forgotten the names but I had their take on a Manhattan, which had lovely notes of chocolate in it. Wife N's drink was the true star, a Gin drink with lemon, ginger and thyme. Perfectly balanced and herbal, wonderful. Started with their Salmon Tartare, prepared with finely diced onions and radishes and a lovely dressing. It came with slices of dark and sweet bread. We thought the Tartare was flawless, but the bread had too sweet a note and they didn't pair well. A savory crostini would have perfected the dish. It was still a 5* dish. Yeah, the salmon was that good. Next came a salad of arugula with apricots. Wonderful dressing and crisp fresh arugula contrasted nicely with the apricots. Our only issue was the apricots were overripe and mealy--if the apricots were perfectly ripe, this would have been the perfect salad. Still great points for the dressing and overall flavor. They should have 86'd the apricots and used apples. The mains arrived. She ordered a lamb steak, and I ordered the Salmon. The plates arrived. Both were perfect in our opinion. We couldn't nitpick anything. The salmon, ordered medium rare, achieved it perfectly. It was a thick cut, yet cooked perfectly all the way through. It came on a bed of roasted cherry tomatoes and local mushrooms, and was just fabulous in every way. Her lamb steak was perfectly cooked rare to order. Served on a bed of Fava beans and wild mushrooms, the flavors harmonized beautifully. I am widely known for cooking the best lamb in in my house (okay, I cook the only lamb in my house, but I do it really well). I'm hard to impress on lamb. This lamb impressed me. I have been dethroned. Dessert of a Cardamom-Lemon Zeppole, with Meyer lemon caramel, Oregon huckleberry syrup and ice cream. Wow. Just wow. Wonderful drinks, near-flawless apps, flawless mains and dessert. Service was awesome; our server Nathan took excellent care of us and went out of his way to accommodate a few special requests. We had an absolutely amazing experience at Clarklewis. We loved the setting -- it felt both laid-back and welcoming, yet upscale at the same time. Our server was top notch -- very knowledgeable and willing to answer all of our questions. And last but not least, the food was delicious! Not sure what happened that led to the disastrous dinner service on Valentine's Day 2024, but I can confidently say this was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I love restaurants and I'm pretty open minded so not generally the type to leave a 1 star review, but truly every aspect of the evening was terrible. We arrived for our 8pm reservation to find a line out the door just to check in for our reservation. Diners near the door were encouraging those of us in line to just cancel our reservation and get out before spending our whole evening there and I wish we had followed their advice. After checking in about 8:30 we were taken to the back of the restaurant to continue waiting for our table. We got seated just before 9 and waited another half hour before someone took our drink order. We were seated in the middle of the dining room where we could see tables who were seated after us ordering food and receiving our dishes well before we did, and could hear other tables complaining of the same thing. Around 10 I flagged down a server and let him know we hadn't yet received our salad while the couple across from us (who sat down after us) were eating dessert. I let another server know we hadn't received two of the dishes listed on the menu and she said she'd check on them but they never showed up. When we had t received our entree course at 10:30, I flagged down another server and told her we needed to get going as we had to work early in the morning. She told us it was being plated and about 15 minutes later it finally arrived, although one of them was not what we ordered. Being so hungry by then, we just decided to eat it anyway. The food was ok but the frustration of receiving such poor service had really put a damper on our evening. In the end we were charged full price for everything without any offer of a discount or comping our drinks. I'm sure this isn't how anyone working there wanted the evening to go, but it's pretty hard to justify charging almost $400 for an experience like that, especially when some of the items on the prix fixe menu weren't even served. I happened to stop by this location this weekend and here are my thoughts: The restaurant and atmosphere - they have dine-in seating and outdoor seating. It was nicely decorated like many hipstery restaurants in Portland. The view is of old commercial buildings and railroad tracks. And a few blocks from the restaurant are the homeless pods. It would be great if they can provide more lighting toward the inside of the restaurant. It was super dark and I could not take any photos of the food. The staff - server is friendly but not too knowledgeable of the food items when I was about the food. Food - It looks like they have changing menu depending on the season, so it is hard to know what's good and what's not good based on the Yelp food photos. We got the the fennel scallop pasta and the Caesar salad. We thought the food was exceptionally good! We also got this rhubarb tarte dessert and it was so delish! Overall, I thought this restaurant was good. However, I deducted 2 stars because I noticed they added this "15% surcharge" for new installation of the ventilation system and Covid-19 related stuff so I thought the food was over priced. I've been in other fancy restaurants in Portland and they all charges from 3% to none. Clarklewis food was good, but it is a bit of a rip off for the pricing without any great views. read more

Clarklewis is a Portland classic, and our recent visit for dinner confirms this status. It's possible we just happened to order the perfect combination of food, but the likelier explanation is that most everything at this restaurant rocks. Scallops with corn puree; arugula salad with burrata and blueberries; tagliatelli with zucchini and an amazing sauce; and a steak that was both perfectly tender and deliciously smoky. Desert was a cherry galette that could not have been fresher or tastier. Service was superb, the atmosphere as sophisticated and cool as we remembered from our previous visits. I came here for my birthday with a friend and although it was really good, it wasn't particularly outstanding. The staff was amazing; really kind, attentive, and quick. As soon as we walked in, we were promptly seated and given our options for the dinner. From what I believe, the menu often changes so it wasn't particularly a huge selection. After we ordered, the food took a while to arrive but we didn't mind all too much (although I would say that we waited for about 30 minutes for appetizers to come out, and there were only five tables there). The appetizers were really good and worth the price point, however, I would say that the entrees were a bit underwhelming for its price. They weren't great, however, I expected something more for what I was paying and it was alright. My friend's dish was also pretty similar, where it was good but felt as if it was missing something. A debacle. A nightmare. A travesty. Truly a disappointment, at best, to the entirety of the Portland fine dining scene. TL;DR there is something very wrong with this restaurant. Go ANYWHERE else or just go home instead. I came here shortly after the restaurant first opened many years ago on a hot summer day and did not have a great experience - sliding doors open on a hot day without moving air make for a miserable dining experience. I foolishly chose to return for this years Valentine's Day event and give this restaurant another chance and -- it was WORSE. We arrived for our 8:00 pm reservation to find a reservation check in line. After check in around 8:15, we were moved to the back portion of the restaurant, by the building's public bathroom, to awkwardly wait to be seated. We were given complimentary champagne while we waited to be seated. Unfortunately, there was no tracking of who arrived in what order in the back waiting area and it was all based on the honor system. After finally being seated at 8:26, we received attention at 8:50 for food and drink while we watched other tables who sat down shortly before or after us place their order before us. Tables around us subsequently received their food and proceeded through the courses while we waited. We: - did not receive all the listed courses on the set menu (no amuse bouche or remise en bouche) - watched tables who sat down 1.5 hours after us get their food before us, finish, and leave - waited 2.5 hours to finally get our courses and finish our meal (left at 10:50) after we requested follow up and lodged complaints multiple times with different individuals and threatened to leave multiple times - we only received each course after the appetizer after we complained or threatened to leave Interestingly enough, we noticed that other tables in the same section (serviced by the same server) were facing the same problems - most prominently not getting food in a timely manner and subpar communication. The table next to us waited 3 hours and only received the appetizer and salad course before leaving. The tables across from us who were seated shortly before/after us but in a different section/server finished their four course meal before we got our salad. It was like our server was either busy doing other things in the kitchen or everyone in the kitchen was purposely not preparing her table's orders in a timely manner. Was she being hazed? Was it her first day? Was this the restaurant and kitchen's first day? I'm not sure. Finally, we paid full price for this experience -- $360 for food and drink. In hindsight, I should have just took the $40/person penalty for missing my reservation. No offer to reduce the bill for inconveniences or a terrible experience. Apologies were only ever provided when we verbally complained -- not one individual there working on Valentine's Day ever took the initiative to apologize for the miserable experience they collectively curated and provided. I know someone is going to say "BuT iTs FiNE iF tHe FoOd iS GoOd~" Surprise! The food wasn't great. - The appetizers were fine - but that tartare was not yellowfin tuna like listed on the menu. Also isn't a hen's egg a chicken egg? Why complicate things? - Overwhelmingly large amounts of grated onion in Caesar salad dressing on Valentine's Day? I joked that the restaurant must be out to disrupt people's V day activities and break relationships. - The short rib was fine sans the bay leaf in one portion and small piece of plastic in my portion - The red velvet cake was covered in a syrup of cherry sauce that smelled like Robitussin - Can't comment on two courses that were never even served by on the menu If this restaurant continues to operate in this way with: whatever internal politics are going on, keeping incompetent people who really are just not trying their best, and not supported co-workers who are clearly struggling it will undoubtedly fail. Something is very very very wrong in there and I hope they all figure out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again - so many people walked out of that place and undoubtedly will not be walking in again. But don't go experience any of the above for yourself. You honestly deserve better. Or maybe not? Take your chances and find out why this restaurant has a 3.8 star rating with multiple verbose negative reviews. read more

4th of July, we are out of state, read their advertisement that they have a private area to view the fireworks with hay bales and music. Best view. Charge 10% extra to dinner for this. We waited 40 min for our first drink, had to complain to order because others after got their drinks. Then, got our drinks. Getting darker, we want to see fireworks, so was concerned. They brought the food, very good. Ate then finally time to see the fireworks. Walked out the back. It was a parking lot, nothing else and their were two large trees blocking some of the fireworks. We could have saved our 80.00 bill and stayed at our hotel and got a better view. False advertising and overcharging for a promise they advertised for. Food was good but if you are going to false advertise, why would you want to go to this place. read more

Clarklewis remains a nice, upscale spot for Central Eastside visits. Our server hit the perfect combination of well informed attentiveness, while avoiding hovering. Though I've never met a pizza I didn't like, the Clarklewis version was almost entirely made up of the characteristics that I do not prefer: the crust was very thin and crispy (almost crackerlike), garlic olive oil took the place of sauce, the amounts of sausage, mushroom, and chevre were comparatively small. The fresh arugula and peppers provided most of the flavor. So, just in terms of personal preference, this one isn't anywhere near the top of my list. Cocktails, on the other hand, were spectacular - I'd happily return to try out other items on the mixed drinks menu. Though pandemic times are winding down, I'm still choosing restaurants based on the availability of outdoor seating, and in this regard, Clarklewis was an excellent choice. read more

This is a very conflicted review... The food deserves 5 STARS! But the service 2.5-3 stars... We arrived at the restaurant at 5:15 we were seated promptly-and given the dinner menu & happy hour menus. We made our food decisions from the HH menu but it took over 20 min for them to even bring water to our table. Once the server came to take our drink order we wanted to order food. We were told we couldn't order from the HH menu as it ended at 5:30! He was totally un-apologetic and somewhat a jerk about it...we stated that we had been sitting there well before 5:30 and that it took them awhile to even come to our table. Again- he could have cared less... His response to this could have made our 1st time experience at this restaurant SO different. We go out for a Valentines Pre-fixe menu every year because it's also my birthday. I was so excited to try this restaurant. Never have I ever had an experience like this. It is easily the worst dining experience I've had in my life. We had 545 reservations, when we got there no acknowledgment from the staff we were even in the room, no greeting. Took around 5 minutes of me trying to make eye contact with people for someone to finally acknowledge us. We got to our table and I went with the wine pairings, my husband tried to order and IPA only to be told they were out, no big deal he got a whiskey. His drink came right away, mine however did not. After around 30 minutes we got our amuse bouche and appetizers. Both of these were very good, they tasted great. No wine to be seen. When I asked my waitress she said she was trying to find the wine guy. I could clearly see her in the kitchen not finding the wine guy lol. When I asked a second time about 30 minutes later she got very snippy with me and said only the wine guy is allowed to give me wine. Eventually I was able to find him and wave him down about 1hr 45 minutes into this ordeal. Wine was great it helped soften this disaster. 2 hours in to a dinner we thought would take a total of 2 hours and we receive our salad. Without the croutons, everyone else got croutons. The couples next to us had been sitting over an hour without even an entree, another couple got there at 530 and by 8 still hadn't gotten their entree. Finally after a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes we decided to call it. Luckily the waitress comped our meal and my wine pairings, but she charged us for a beer we never got. At that point we were gonna dispute it as it took 20 minutes to get the check, and we wanted to get out as soon as possible. It was truly memorable in the worst way. Never have I experienced anything like this before. Wait staff had no idea where the food was going, multiple times giving people the wrong items. We almost got served appetizers again but I directed them to the right table, when the customers know the tables better than the staff you know it's truly messed up management wise. I don't know if there's any recovering from this. I truly believe they should have comped everyone's meal and it makes me sad to see people still paid for this awful experience. Our bus/water boy was amazing, he was the only good part about this mess. Never let our glass get empty and actually smiled at us. I would never give this place another try, I'm so disappointed. Don't waste your time or your money, they provide a subpar experience. We ended up getting pizza. read more

The wine selection is comprised of Oregon's finest. - We started with the Topaz farm carrots that could have been a meal in itself. So flavorful and hearty with the addition of the black lentils. - Wood roasted Durst asparagus; what got me was the pea puree. really fresh and delicate - Herbed Tagliatelle; I was going all in for the mushrooms which it delivered on but given that we also got a fish dish i think the Meyer lemon parpaedelle would have made a better pairing. This pasta was good, but I actually thought it was a bit salty. - Pan Roasted Halibut; cooked to perfection and dressed nicely. read more

The food was all very good. Wine selection was adequate. The maize margarita was so so. But the evening came together very well and I attribute that to a well run establishment. read more

Food was a bit disappointing. Scallops appetizer ($24) was 3 VERY SMALL scallops. Pasta was WAY too heavy on the lemon and kinda pricey considering it was fully vegetarian dish. Cocktail was pretty weak and they used a large glass like what I have as a water glass in my home (so it tasted mostly of fruit juice) Service was lacking; we had to get up and find silverware so we could start eating our meal. Well here's a shocker! Still trying to recover lost Covid revenue I guess. The bill has a statement, "Note: a 16% service charge is added to your bill." Then a long diatribe justifying why and where it goes. This charge is over and above taxes and gratuities. This statement is displayed on the menu and in other places around the establishment, so nobody can say they didn't know. I guess that makes it ok. To add insult to injury, our server, Michael B. was one of the rudest server's we've encountered in a long while. Some of the food was pretty good, some was pretty bad. eg, the entree salad was over-fluffed with mixed greens... not much of the non-lettuce items. The fish was good, albeit a very small 4oz portion. Dinner for 2, no wine was $110 (yes I did leave a tip anyway). Not the best! read more

My husband took us here for a date night and it was so spectacular. The food was so delicious and fresh and just the right amount. It was pretty hard to make a decision but I was very happy with our choices. We started with a salami plate which was so rich and flavorful. We didn't know what one of the cheeses was but it was so good. My husband got the lamb and I got the pasta. I thought I had tasted fresh pasta before but I had not. We had to go for it and get dessert. I got the hazelnut dessert and he had the chocolate? Either way, mine was so delicious I didn't want to share but I let him have one bite. I attended a graduation celebration in their private room (Kindling Room). The room was the perfect size for our group of 16. They had a projection screen and speakers we could use for a slide show. The food was exquisite. The service was outstanding. One member of our party was elderly with poor teeth and the staff found something they not only could eat but enjoy. We started the evening with drinks at the bar from Justin and the Clarklewis team. We ordered two dozen of the Hammersley oysters, brining and sweet between three of us. Then we enjoyed the Wagyu appetizer. It was tougher than we expected. For the mains we shared gluten-free pizza and gluten-free pasta and sipped a Ridgecrest Pinot noir. We were very happy with everything. Please note: today we cooked the gluten-free pizza that was left over fried it up in an oiled pan and then broiled it with cheese some thing the restaurant should definitely consider doing & an egg on top. Had a fabulous dinner in a inviting environment. Had campfire cocktail, delicious gnocchi, tasty wings and a yummy brick oven pizza. The server was attentive but not intrusive. The show stopper was the gnocchi but closely followed by the creme brulee trio! Wow, so creamy and delish. Bittersweet chocolate, salted caramel and hazelnut. Everything was fabulous. Food and service was absolutely stellar, thank you! The problem was that there was an unexpected service charge that wasn't on the menu or we were informed of first. It specifically stated on the receipt that none of said charge went to the servers or the chefs and was to "not raise prices" HOW IS THAT NOT RAISING PRICES!? I felt swindled and felt very badly for the service and kitchen staff. I heard three other groups complaining about this. Either just raise your prices or let people know about this policy. Otherwise they should tell patrons it could get a bit noisy there. We chose to sit in the patio which was not a good choice. Price for a salad, two drinks and 2 entrees was over $150, which included a 16% service charge. The bill emphatically stated that the service charge was not a tip. Tip was to be figured, including the service charge as a percentage of total bill. Why would one add a tip to a service charge that is also being shared among the workers? A 16% service charge and a 15% minimum tip puts a 33%+ add to a dinner bill. Please just include a 16% in the price of each item on the menu. Or just announce your policy of service charge on open table and other places where reservations are made. Seeing that in the small print at the bottom of the menu or the bill is not a pleasant surprise. On a plus side the Caesar salad is excellent and could be sold for a higher price. read more

Tonight was special as we were celebrating our dear friend's 60th birthday. We wanted to dine somewhere exquisite and Clarklewis was our choice! Our meal from the get go was scrumptious- the appetizers - scallops - venison - oysters all were top shelf - delicious . Our entrees were amazing as their pizza - yes I'm saying pizza was so tasty it's hard to articulate- their cheese - it was soooo good. Oh and their Caesar Salad was off the charts as their garlic dressing was so strong that your taste buds were on overdrive- if your partner didn't have any - then your sleeping in the next room . Kudos to our server Jill as she was a class act - especially after we were well into 1 1/2 of our meal and they ran out of his entree - They did the right thing and comped him his entree - amazing as most places just say sorry and maybe give you a desert. I was so pleased to see that these folks know what is important - the customer! Thank you to the chefs - Jill and staff at Clarklewis for an memorable meal and wonderful evening. . Hooray for PDX restaurant month! How awesome that Portland have this event for a month! A group of girlfriends and I were in town for only a night, and we were very happy with our restaurant choice. For $33 for 3 courses-- we got our money's worth. The portions size was not lacking as well. Here are the favorites (also available on the regular menu) - cauliflower bisque: omg this soup changed my life! I can eat this everyday! - risotto: it was great. Cheesy and the right consistency - wood fired chicken: the chicken is Moist (with the capital M). It was the crowd favorite -butterscotch budino: this is crack pudding people! So rich and just the right of sweetness. Best any butterscotch flavored anything I've had. -Clarklewis old fashioned: you're either going to have a good or bad cocktail right? I ordered 2. Love the open space of this restaurant. As you enter, you are exposed to their kitchen, and you can just smell all that good food. Tables with white linen and candle lights. The food was delicious! We had a pizza and the chargrill double r ranch NY steak. The steak was perfectly medium and the rainbow carrots melted on the tongue. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The place is $$$ but the quality of the food and service is high. read more
