Happened to be in the area and decided to stop. Last time we were here, our son was a baby and Mr. Clark brought him a rib bone suggesting it was good for gnawing on, and our son loved it. Our son is about to turn 29. We knew the place had burned and been rebuilt, and that Mr. Clark was no longer with us, but nostalgia dictated we stop in. Glad we did. In the interest of full disclosure, we are pretty snobby when it comes to barbecue. We hit lots of places and like what we like. That said, Clark's was good. The waitstaff was sweet, our server took good care of us, and I believe I overheard that they split tips there. We ordered rib ends, but they were already sold out for the day, and she was very apologetic for that. So, when we ordered, I ordered my okra extra crispy, she assured me she'd make sure it was since they didn't have the ends, it would be to my satisfaction. And it was, crispy perfection! While we are on sides, we ordered the fries, fresh cut and delicious. The barbecue smoked beans seemed to be pork & beans with barbecue sauce and not much more tweaking. The old fashioned pinto beans tasted like ranch style beans, which are fine if you like ranch style beans and I do. The toast was buttery and crisp. The brisket had good flavor but was dry, the barbecue sauce was good so we ate it with that (we usually don't eat much sauce if any). Three of the four ribs were dry as well, again, good flavor just not as moist as I like. The jalapeno cheddar sausage was fantastic and spicy! What a nice treat that was! Got smoked bologna to go (because I love me some smoked bologna) and it is also really, really good. Observing other people's food around us, the sandwiches looked great, especially a ham one I saw come out. The fried cheese balls seemed to be a hit as well. Desserts looked and sounded heavenly. Iced tea was fresh and spot on. If we are in the area again, we will definitely go back. read more

Been in several times lately due to work location. Food is always good, nice rustic (but new) atmosphere, friendly service. Met the "second in command" (told me I couldn't call him the boss as he is married) and he said they would be adding a patio, small bandstand and small dance floor out back. Finally stopped in after saying we need to try it for years. We'll definitely be coming back. The staff is super friendly! The plates are huge! We got stuffed and had leftovers. We ordered the fried cheese balls and devoured them. Ordered the kids chicken strip plate, calf fries meal, rib and one meat plate, and the kids corn dog basket. Husband said those were the best fried calf fries he's ever had. The brisket was sooo good. French fries were hit with all of us! Ribs and sides were yummy too. We ordered the peach cobbler with ice cream too and it's also huge and fed all 5 of us. read more

Tried Clark's on a whim, and was not disappointed. My wife had "Brian's burger" and she said it was one of the best burgers that she has ever had. I had the 2 meat plate, with sliced brisket and Turkey. It was good, but just good. Nothing to knock your socks off. The sauce was very bland in my opinion. The fries are very good homestyle fries, the red beans were not my cup of tea. Service was great, very friendly and attentive. Hubby & I decided to take a road trip to see a friends place close to Lake Ray Roberts. He surprised me by taking me to Clark's. We'd always wanted to eat at Clark's & it was the perfect time to do so. Clark's is filled with rich history of cattlemen, ranchers & horse sales & wheelin' & dealin' . The walls are filled with many pictures and murals of local customers & famous folks. Clark's is exactly what I was hoping for. I really liked the old original building, decor & ambience right off the bat. As we walked in the door, the wait staff was super friendly and, we lucked out and got Jan for our waitress. There's no tellin' how long Jan has worked at Clark's . She was nice, knowledgeable and a little sassy. Although the mural on the back wall is beginning to peal off, you can tell that they just don't want to lose it, so they're just leavin' it alone & letting it age. Hubby had BBQ on his mind & that is what Clark's is so well known for. He ordered the smoked brisket and pork ribs with fried corn and fried okra & 1/2 a peach was on the plate, as well. The brisket was smoked exactly the way a guy we use to farm with, smoked his venison. Same texture, same smokey goodness....absolutely delicious! It's smoked for 3 days. The pork ribs were equally delicious. They make some great BBQ Sauce & Jan brought it to our table warm & in a really cool old bottle. The okra was exactly the way we like it, as well....very lightly battered & dusted w/ 1/2 cornmeal & 1/2 flour. I ordered the fried pork chops with fried okra, baked beans and cole slaw. WOW! First, there are 3 large pork chops.....I was hungry but, not that hungry. They were lightly breaded and cooked to perfection....exactly what I was wanting. I really enjoyed the okra, as well. We wound up getting a to-go container because we knew we weren't leavin' there without a piece of coconut & chocolate pie with mile high calf slobber. Every single bite of my chocolate pie was worth waiting for! Just delicious! At one time they served alcohol but, nowadays it's BYOB. That was a great meal & one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time. Jan made the experience even better. Clark's will surely take ya back in time. Anybody know that Tioga, TX is the home of Gene Autry? I didn't either until I stopped at Clark's Outpost Bar-B-Q on a weekend ride with a few friends. One had the Brisket, the other the Ribs and I lived on the edge with an order of Lamb Fries. Excellent reviews from all. Brisket tender, Ribs falling off the bone and the Lamb Fries (Baaaah!!!) were....uh, well.....pretty darn good, although it's not a plate that I'll be adding into the regular rotation. Sides were all excellent too. The Fried Corn-on-the-Cob has been featured on the Food Network and got a thumbs up. Fried Okra met eveyones expectation and the BBQ Beans and Jalapeno Black-Eyed Peas did not disappoint. It does have that "hole-in-the-wall", comfortable feel that I'm always actively seeking out and the staff was prompt and friendly. Too bad its so far from my stomping grounds or I would make it there more often. read more

Our first time will be our last. After paying at the window and waiting half an hour in the car I went in and asked about our order. It had been clearly sitting there for a while. The employee said he would run it out to us when it was ready but he was clearly more interested in leaning on the counter drinking a soda than checking on our order. And it wasn't busy. Needless to say everything was cold except the potato which was warm from sitting in the beans. And they forgot a side salad we paid for. read more

First time at Clark's and first time in Tioga. My wife and I loved our barbecue sandwiches, sliced beef and chopped beef. Some of the best we've ever had. We had their fried corn on the cob and tried the cauliflower rice. Everything was great! They have the traditional barbecue menu but also a light menu including wild rice, baked sweet potatoes, and other light vegetable options. Fortunately, we saved room for dessert... ordering a bread pudding and the coconut meringue pie. Both were great and the meringue was truly fantastic! Friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. I've been going here since I was a kid. I was saddened when it burned down. I'm so happy that it has now been resurrected. The new building was constructed with the reclaimed original bricks from the old building. The food is delicious. We had the brisket, turkey and ham. All were to perfection. The cheddar cheese balls, fried zucchini and French fried corn on the cob were amazing!!! Service was great! Friendly and fast. We will continue to go here for many more years to come! read more

The food was pretty good. Not the best I've had, but definitely tasty. What made my experience enjoyable was my wonderful waitress. Im not sure what her name was, I think it was Parker, but she was so nice to me. She was very polite and kind and made my experience an overall great one. She should definitely get a raise or promotion, even if she was dressed like an old lady. Still, she needs to get paid more. Also, the bathroom didn't have toilet paper so you guys should probably check that out. read more

Just popped back in since the rebuild and yeah....still very average to even below average. Ribs were dry and leathery with overpowering smoke. Brisket was dry and flavorless. Fried okra was dripping in oil. The salad was OK. Can't really screw up iceberg lettuce I guess. The pie was a highlight last time I came and it was even bad this time. Had way too much cocoa powder and tasted like it wasn't mixed all the way. This is not a good bbq place. read more

Can you believe they smoke the brisket here for three whole days? No kidding! And, they used to smoke it for five days, when they first opened. So tender and juicy, for meats smoked as long as they are. This place is famous in the area, for their food, and because of all the big cattle and horse dealing that occur inside their walls. The walls of Clarks Outpost bear paintings, photographs, and sketches of their many local customers: ranchers, cattlemen, and equestrian business operators. The bartender told me all about the long history of Clarks; customers' passionate negotiations over cattle sales, horse studding, and the sort of wheeling-dealing that make Grayson County, Texas the hotspot it is for the horse and cattle industry, nationwide. Customer appreciation is really the most noticeable quality of this place. What restaurant covers nearly every wall with photographs and artwork bearing the likenesses of its customers? Clarks does. It surprises me that Clarks is not on more lists of top barbecue joints - as it ranks first on my list. Several times now I have made the 1 1/2 hour commute from North Dallas to this bastion of brisket, and though each time I have found a dinner plate of thick sliced meat with plenty of brown worth the drive. From the outside Clarks appears a relic of a ghost town - its basic wooden building and dirt lot lies across the street from a purveyor of horse insurance. Smoke hangs in the air. Inside is dark - almost dive-bar-esque which is ironic because per county rules drinking necessitates joining their 'club'. All said the atmosphere reeks of a hidden barbecue gem and the food does not disappoint. I have never found the heart to stray from the brisket which is truly divine - but have paired it once with the lamb fries (novelty value a 8, taste a 5) and a gigantic slice of meringue pie (taste an 8 - bonus points for height greater than 6 in). Each time I have taken a few pounds of meat and a bottle of sauce home - their takeout meats are offered vacuum sealed and thus a few pounds (preciously rationed) lasts a month or so. Pricing is higher then preferred but not outlandish. Feeding two + a few lbs of meat to go nears $100. All said Clarks would be worth twice the drive. read more

Our first experience was awful. I got home with our meals and had been given the wrong beans. Ordered pinto beans got chili beans and they were awful. Our sides consisted of about two tablespoons of coleslaw and a bit more of the potatoe salad. The portion size of the meats were very small and the cost of two dinners was almost $40. read more

I Ride Motor cycles. I group of about 20 of us went for a ride on Sunday to this location. It was a great ride from Dallas area. The restaurant was rustic. We were treated well. Service was good. The food was just ok. I ordered turkey and brisket with two sides, coleslaw and French fries. The French fries were soggy not good at all. Turkey was good as was the brisket. I did not ask about the BBQ sauce it seems to be thin almost like supermarket brand. I did not like it JUST MY OPINO. The coleslaw was good and it was the only thing I finished. The price seemed high for some of the small sized appetizers that others at the table had gotten. I am not sure I would go back there are plenty of great BBQs in Texas. read more

Texans will do a lot for good BBQ, and in a State as large as ours, driving an hour for any meal doesn't really seem that strange. So, on a beautiful Labor Day, we headed north ... to what has been hailed as BBQ Nirvana. Clark's Outpost has received glowing reviews everywhere I have ever seen it mentioned. It's in any number of books on Texas BBQ. It's got rave reviews here, which is what sealed the deal when I was looking for something to do on my day off. I don't get it. The brisket is good and well-smoked, but it's certainly not the best brisket I've ever had. It's a wee bit dry, so if you like sauce, then this is the place to go, because their sauce was amazing. One of the issues with the healthy food police seems to be that all meat is well-trimmed and you need fat for flavor. This is very lean brisket and I'm not really a fan of very lean brisket. Very lean brisket requires sauce. Lots of sauce. I don't really like sauce. My (apparently unique) opinion: If you have good meat, well-prepared, you shouldn't have to cover it up with sauce. If you're just going to dump sauce all over it, there are any number of places I could go closer to home. (Go to your local Rudy's and ask for "moist" brisket. It's the only brisket I've found that doesn't need sauce.) I do think the sauce at Clark's is some of the best I've had. It's not enough to make me a fan of the stuff, but it's much, much better than most. The sausage is very good, but it's Kuby's sausage, so I could go down there and save the drive to Tioga. The ribs were amazing. I would go back for the ribs. Actually, I would go back for the experience, and that's what makes Clark's Outpost worth the drive for me. It's a shack in the middle of nowhere, almost up to Oklahoma. The staff is great, a bit quirky, but it's country-quirky so that's fine with me. As you head north from Dallas and the roads get narrower and the traffic falls away, most of the annoyances of city life seem to fall with them. (The problem with this is that on the way home, they all seem to return with a vengeance.) Still, even citified Texans need a bit of country life now and then. Out in the northern hinterlands at Winstar casino for an Elvis impersonator show for my father in law's birthday. Didn't want to waste good money on the endlessly crappy buffet inside the casino, and it recalled that I had been wanting to get to Clark's for a long time...used that as the catalyst to convince the other 8 people in the van that Clark's was the place we needed to go. ("but you guys, it's Sunday, and nothing is open nearby." Good thing no one dared verify that claim) Got to Clark's, and immediately got put a little off. Whomever the lady was that was running the show that night seemed pretty put off that a party of 10 walked into her restaurant...on a Sunday night no less! How many restaurants would kill for parties of that size on an otherwise quiet night?? There were some other tables occupied in the place, and we were 2 hours prior to closing, and as we walked by the open kitchen, could see the kitchen staff standing against the equipment, arms folded, looking extremely bored. Why wouldn't we be welcomed?? But I digress. We did get seated immediately, and the waitress took our drink order. A few minutes later brought us our drinks...and then basically disappeared for the next 30 minutes! Eventually, a male server came up to the table to take our order...what happened here?? Once we got that all situated, the food did come out in good time, and all complete as well. I had the half chicken, with some of that famous deep fried corn. The outside of the chicken had a nice glaze on it, in such a way that you could tell that it was basted several times throughout the cooking process. Unfortunately, the cooking process went on too long. The chicken itself was tough in places, and relatively dry throughout. The corn did live up to its fame, and was tasty. Also had collard greens that were very good. Our table had a sprinkling of various items. Ribs, chicken fried steak, smoked turkey, catfish, brisket. All got very favorable reviews from everyone in the group, as did pretty much all the sides. Dessert was a great topper as well. Warm apple pie alamode, chocolate cream pie, and coconut cream pie were all huge, and the choc and coconut both had a mountain of tasty meringue on top! I had a small bite of the apple pie, and it was indeed very good. The barbecue sauce is very good, and brought to the tables warm, in old Grolsch beer bottles, with the stopper on top. (even had to get a bottle to bring home) Meant to try the lamb fries...but I also mean to live a lenghty life, and unfortunately, I've been banned from too much of the fried stuff. Damn. That is not to say that I won't be back...this time getting the lamb fries, as well as some of the other favorites on the menu...and really do it up. I will say with regard to the interior...while I can see where the peeling paint on the huge mural on the wall kind of fits the whole "old building" motif and all...but I really don't want to have to be the guy, nor the person that has to deal with that guy, when the paint chip falls into the food. Please either protect the wall by putting a huge piece of plexi over it...or repaint. Again...we will be back...I just don't think it lived up to the hype, be it local or what you have seen on the food shows. read more

I have been going to Clark's off and on for give or take 20 plus years, back when the original owner was alive. Many of the reviews on here lately are true. it is a bit overpriced, but that being said, BBQ is not a cheap meal. In case you haven't wandered down the meat isle in your local grocery store lately, nothing is cheap. So if your watching your wallet, just go grab something off the McD's dollar menu. The history of Clark's is worth a trip in itself. Once voted a top 10 BBQ joint in the United States (People Magazine). As a kid I remember helicopters flying in and landing across the street, probably some rich dudes out of Dallas or OK City. The Brisket I had today was a little overdone. Which was disappointing for me because in its prime Clark's was known for amazing Brisket, some of the best in Texas. The ribs are usually pretty good. Side dishes need an overhaul. Service could as well. The complaints about it being a dirty building are probably coming from yuppies, it might not be the cleanest looking place but I don't think health is a factor. It holds the original feeling, because not much has changed in 30 + years (except ownership), and for me that's pretty neat. Needs some attention to detail in order to get back to it's roots. Overhaul on side dishes, better attempt at service. Right now it stands as slightly better than average BBQ, but not greatness like the old man once had it running at. read more

We heard great stories about this being amazing BBQ but we were not impressed. First and foremost Our waiter didn't want to be there and didn't even listen to order, and obviously didn't know anything about what types of meat or what was sold at the restaurant. We ordered Sliced brisket off the point (the fatty section). Someone other than the waiter brought our meat, it was a weird shredded beef... so it's possible our waiter never told the guy slicing the meat in the back. We asked for sliced brisket again, and this time we were brought brisket off the flat. Still not what we asked for, but since they didn't really come by to ask us we ate it anyway.... The meat was dry, it had some "shine" but like it had been sprayed with water after. It was dry, and instead of having a nice pull it "fell apart" even with my little bit of experience, I know this means it was overcooked. It took quite a bit of sauce to make it not chewy .... And I'll admit the sauce was good, which really helped saved the brisket but Dallas is just down the road, which means Lockhart or some where else where there is great BBQ, with moist tender brisket that doesn't need a sauce to eat it.
