She and her staff are simply wonderful. For the first time in my life I got an explanation of each step they took in examining my teeth. Dr. Faye even explained what the numbers meant as she used the poker to examine my gums, something that never sat well with me in the past. I now am able to overlook any discomfort because I fully understand what it tells me about my health. Since I had a full exam within the last 3 years, my insurance wouldn't cover it fully and it cost me $118 for the visit. I'm not upset about this because it makes sense that as a new patient, I would need to establish care and get a full examination. Just make sure to check with your insurance if they will cover a full exam so there aren't any surprises. I only had to wait 10 minutes before being called back by the dental hygienist. She was very kind and explained everything before she did it. She had a soft hand as well. When she was done with my cleaning, I didn't have to wait long to be seen by the doctor. As a patient with minimal dental issues, I had zero complaints about my appointment as a new patient.

Now on to Dr. Gene Cohen - when he's sober he's great. Okay that was a joke because in the interest of full disclosure, I went to high school with Gene, and then our freshmen year at UMSL. He's the same intelligent, thoughtful, nice guy I knew from years ago. But more than that, he is extremely competent, doesn't rush through the exam, takes time to fully explain things to you, and in general inspires confidence. When I arrived, the hygienist informed me that the doctor was not in that day and was surprised that no one had notified me ahead of time or asked if I'd like to reschedule my appointment. I was frustrated but decided to stay as I had taken that morning off from work for this appointment and wanted to keep my cleaning. The hygienist took care of my cleaning and said everything looked good. I was surprised to hear that as last time I was in the dentist said a cavity was developing and that he'd need to take a closer look at my next check-up. The hygienist then reviewed my records and saw he had made a note of that. I asked if she could gauge how much it progressed so she then began scanning my teeth. As I suspected, I had a decent cavity. I'm glad I mentioned this as it clearly would have gone untreated. Of course the hygienist suggested I come back when the doctor was in. That won't be happening - I've already switched to a new dentist. Why should I come back when the doctor was a no-show for my appointment and his staff was sloppy with their work (scheduling issues, not checking my records, etc)?
