I will say that I found this place on a list of places to go in portland and i respect that its an indonesian place dedicated to some classics. the food on AVERAGE is generally really good, I feel like maybe this is something in my personal palette or the way in which it was cooked where it wasn't TOTALLY hitting for me, but the spot itself is really cute and the area is also great. The drinks are really really fun and that's definitely one of the things to highlight if you decide to come back here!

Super authentic Indonesian street food dishes and cakes. Portions are bigger than in Indonesia but all very delicious. Service is attentive and decors are typical of traditional restaurant in Indonesia. Only street-side parking available (as far as I know) so can be a bit tricky.

Very new to the Indonesian food world and was taken in surprise how spicy it can be. While only one or two were spicy others were not. It's not bad to try something new. We also received really great service. Thanks!!

I have been here twice and both experiences were similar. Vibe: Very friendly, kind, helpful staff. Took the time to tell us about the ingredients. Service was attentive without hovering. Food: Tended toward spicy but also very interesting and flavorful. And some dishes were less spicy. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Menu: clearly marked Our group favorites: Sayur asin tomat with tempeh lovely combo of flavors Emie medan veg- good mix of flavor and texture Ketoprak - unique and interesting

This cute restaurant has been getting a lot of good local press. Longtong cap goh meh: 4/5 This is may be their most famous dish. The flavors were good, but I felt like it was missing noodles or rice to go with all of the broth. It has compacted rice in sausage form, but it doesn't soak up the broth. Emie medan: 4/5 fragrant broth with nice lemongrass essence. This one comes with noodles, which I appreciate O-kue: 4.5/5 This formed cake has a nice flavor and texture profile. It was more subtle and has some heat to it Cantik manis: 4/5 gel-textured subtlety sweet treat Service was friendly. They also have some fun-sounding drinks!

I've never been to Indonesia but I feel like I'm more likely to go now that I've been introduced to some amazing flavors at Pasar! The menu takes a while to digest, if you will (or at least it did for me) since it's full of unfamiliar words but everything is explained and I don't feel like I went wrong with any of my choices! I tried this place based on the NYT top 25 list and was totally impressed by the food and felt the prices were more than fair. Top hits were the Lemper Ayam (amazing seasoning) and the Lontong Cap Go Meh (fun variety of textures and flavors, yummy broth). Many dishes were pretty spicy so be careful if you can't handle spice like me.

The food was pretty tasty and absolutely flavorful though a bit heavy on the garlic. I liked how there was flexibility in the dishes as far as being able to get dishes with meat, veggie, or vegan for everyone's taste. Our favorite was their top dish the lontong. I personally wasn't a fan of the lontong rice pieces but loved the curry and other parts of the dish. I would recommend getting a side of rice with it to really enjoy the dish. We also liked the asinan betawi. The ketoprak was also good but less flavorful than the others. We got all the dishes vegan. One gripe was the cups are cute but they had rusted bits inside each of the cups so we didn't feel comfortable drinking from them. The limeade was a good substitute and seemed pretty homemade, watered down to not be that sour. The tolak angin was very much like "Vick's vapor rub" per the server and had such an intense smell we all got a bit of the feeling without drinking it haha.

Love this oasis of flavors Ran in here on a cold Portland night in January . Discovered Spencer an amazing host. He traveled to Indonesia with his surfer band. How's that for an inclusive event? Yes , took his electric guitar to a country that enjoys surfer music. Tonight he encouraged me to try a great savory vegetable fritter with a peanut sauce. So complex, crispy and savory. My main dish was Udang Telor Asin Savory rich fried shrimp with a complex Salted Duck egg yolk sauce. Each shrimp tasted like a savory shrimp Benedict sans English Muffin. The rice was an accessory to the experience peppered with caramelized shallots.

So we went to Pasar on our anniversary. It's on the NYT top 25 restaurants in Portland list. Portland Eater also puts it in their top restaurants in PDX. We ended up ordering most of what they recommended. It feels like stepping into Jakarta when you enter this ethnic eatery. Shadow puppet cutouts dance along one wall, the bar has a grass awning, water is served in painted tin cups and the plastic plates feel authentically Southeast Asian as well. Most of the dishes at Pasadena are meant to be shared, which is always fun. The more dishes I get to try the happier I am! The drinks are authentic! I chose the "Famous Indonesian Sweet Tea" which comes in a cute little juice box. My husband got the refreshing limeade. Both were good choices. The food came in quick succession after that. Dishes came close together. First were 2 items from the Jajanan section of the menu: Martabak Daging-crispy and pastry-like filled with ground beef; and Risol Sayur, another pastry with veggies inside. Yum. Then came Rujak Serut, a salad with pineapple, papaya, jicama, cucumber, etc with a delicious tamarind dressing topped with peanuts. Refreshing and flavorful! Lastly our main dish came: Longto g Cap Go Meh. This dish was anything but Meh! Delicious broth, interesting textures that included veggies, fried tofu, etc. I loved it but my husband wasn't that crazy about the potato chips that came on top, and the crispy crackers. He also didn't like the rice cake rolls. The texture put him off. I liked them though. I'd like to go back and try more things on the menu. I just have to convince my husband!

So apologies - I realized after the fact I took no pics of the food - we were v hungry and the food was v good. Enjoyed every dish I had, the fried rice finally satisfied the craving for the old Indonesian spot on my college campus 16yrs ago, finally! I also really enjoyed the shrimp dish, Udang Telor Asin and the chicken wings - def winners. Try some of the beverages - the teas were great for after dinner! Potent. Service was very good, our server was friendly and had recommendations. The food came amazingly quick, so the wait for a table on a Saturday night wasn't too long. I will definitely return.

    o-kue or steamed taro cake

Came for lunch, and it was a charming spot that really felt authentic and takes you away to what one imagine it would be like eating streetside somewhere in Indonesia. It was quiet when I was there, with few diners, but it was a fun experience to try a cuisine that I have little experience with. Much of the menu is designed as street food, so they're small portions or snacks. Also, being a snack-type place, there are a lot of deep-fried items (which I generally avoid) so that reduces the options for people looking for healthier options. I tried a Nasi Kucing, which is a small rice dish with topping of your choice. I tried the babi goreng, or pork belly, which I didn't notice was deep fried (I should have read carefully the "crispy" part in the menu). Overall it was good and fun presentation with the banana leaf. The rujak serut seemed like it would be like a Thai papaya salad, but it was almost like a fruit salad with mango, pineapple, papaya and jicama. I could see how this dish would be refreshing on a summer day (but this was winter when I visited, so I did appreciate getting some vitamin C. I also tried a "o-kue" which was under the savory cake section. It's a steamed taro cake that was cute with chopped dried shrimp on top. It reminded me of the Chinese daikon steamed cake you get for dim sum. Overall, this was a great way to stretch your global dining experiences with some well-executed dishes. I held back a star because it can be pricey given how small the orders are. But good service and well done food.

Ordered: -Lemper Ayam -Rujak Serut -Siomay Bandung -Emie Medan -Babi Goreng Pro: -Everything here is delicious and flavorful; we'll be back!! -Our absolute favorites were: Lemper Ayam, Rujak Serut & Babi Goreng -Portions are smaller like tapas style so you get to try a bit of everything -We recommend ordering sambal to pair with your food. We ordered the terasi sambal & saus kacang which seems to be made in house. Spicy, so watch out!! -Interior is welcoming and festive :-)

You'll have to try a few different dishes to figure out what you like.
    Sylvia C.

Super tasty snacks and bites that are perfect to share with friends, coworkers, or on a date! The servers were gracious enough to guide us and share their recommendations so we got nasi goreng, a noodle dish, some cod and chicken dumplings, fruit salad, veggie salad (they're not your typical salads), and a few desserts plus drinks. The cocopandancello was delicious and creamy with a hint of booze, and a perfect little accompaniment to the meal.

We opted to order à la carte instead of doing the rice table, and honestly, there were so many standouts. We started with the Krupuk Chips with Peanut Sauce. The chips themselves could have used a tad more flavor, but they were perfectly crunchy -- and that peanut sauce WAS THE STAR. Rich, savory, addictive... seriously finger-licking good. The Roti Canai was another favorite. Flaky, delicious bread paired with a blistered tomato curry that completely caught me off guard in the best way. I had no idea what to expect, but WOW. The curry was punchy, coconutty, aromatic, and just packed with flavor. So good. The Charcoal Grilled Chicken Satay was such a standout dish. Beautifully smoky, flavorful, and exactly the kind of dish you keep going back for. We also tried the Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu Mai, which was juicy, savory, and absolutely loaded with flavor. And then the Sumatran Style Beef Rendang -- tender, soft, and beautifully flavorful. It came with clove rice that was also WOW, and the green mango sambal brought this bright, tangy element that balanced the richness of the dish perfectly. Service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was vibrant, lively, and fun. Overall, Gado Gado delivered BIG on flavor. So many bold, aromatic, layered dishes, and I loved how each one brought something different to the table. Definitely a memorable meal!

Located in a strip mall in a non-descript portion of the Hollywood neighborhood, the restaurant really has a unique appeal about it. It has the heart of Portland beating through it, and at the same time, the plates they are pumping out are some of the most unique food one can find on the East Coast or West Coast. They offer a tasting menu and a la carte options. Just like their sister restaurants, they have a unique range of cocktails available, and an assortment of beers and wines. What really struck me about the restaurant was less about the food, more about the service. The service was so kind. I mean, really kind. The server we had, Emily, was one of the nicest people I've ever interacted with in table service. To be honest, that's more than enough to get me to go back. Oh, and the beef brisket was dreamy good.

Although there is an eclectic mix of cocktails on the menu u, the beer and wine offerings are sparse. I would imagine this is a business decision that is based on the ever growing market challenges of running a restaurant in a competitive environment like Portland with such narrow margins. It seemed promising when we arrived because the space is very cute and clean, with lots of greenery. The umbrellas and piano make the space look unique and enticing. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. We ordered the non-fried spring rolls as a starter. They were not good and I regretted my choice. They were wrapped sloppily and seemed to lack filling. It reminded me of a moist sock sliding off of a foot. The veggie filling had a nice flavor, but the damp draping roll wrap grossed me out. I wished I could just toss them in a deep fryer. We decided to share the coconut curry noodles with tofu, and the okra dish, and we both added one samosa on the side. The curry noodles were shockingly bland. I did not taste curry at all, only coconut. Not a speck of curry flavor. It was weird, because the noodles were yellow...my brain kept expecting flavor that never came. It screamed for salt, and there was none on the table. It also left a bland, chalky coating on your tongue. The tofu in the dish was not good. The pieces were cut all different sizes and it had a musty bitter flavor that I was not expecting. I couldn't even eat it. I was also surprised that the dish lacked vegetables...it was garnished with raw red onion, cilantro, and some horrible dry store-bought brand crunchy noodles. I was shocked by how much I hated that dish. The okra dish was a little better (it actually had some flavor) but it was very one-note and I would not call it good. The main flavor I got was smoked paprika, which was kinda nice but overpowering, as it tasted raw and needed to be cooked through more. The tiny potatoes were raw which was really not cool. There's not much I hate more than undercooked potatoes. The eggplant was also undercooked and spongy. The okra was ok. Even the rice was not good. It was mushy and came in a pathetically tiny portion served in a small cup that was barely half full. The samosas were probably the worst thing we had. I wouldn't even call it a samosa. It was a tiny greasy triangle of mostly dough. There was a single pea and a tiny smear of overly-salty potato filling. I was shocked at how bad they were. My wife didn't even finish hers even though it was tiny. It was that bad. Worse than the food was the stupid robot waiter. We had to push a gross (obviously smeared and dirty) button to make the robot go away after bringing our food. And we could tell that the waitress was also annoyed by it, as she had to walk it through the restaurant like it was a toddler taking its first steps. So dumb. This was the worst and most expensive lunch I have had EVER. It is rare that I try a new place and don't like anything I try. It was kind of shocking, actually. I will never be back.
