I love that Fairley's Pharmacy has been serving the community since 1913, that's such an amazing legacy. The neighborhood mainstay has offered a number of services throughout the years, and they still go above and beyond for the community they serve. They continue to operate their soda fountain, offer compounding services, and home delivery to customers in Northeast Portland. Due to my health insurance plan I'm not able to get most of my prescriptions filled here, but I have stopped in from time to time to pick up various items that don't require a copay. The folks here are always friendly and helpful. I do wish the soda fountain were more of a priority, but I understand staffing concerns and the fact that it's probably mostly a novelty these days. But I really do love that it's still here, they still serve phosphate sodas, malts and all the other yummies you'd expect to find. Is this the last soda fountain in Portland? I'll need to do some research on that - and if it is - let's start a Fairley's Club where Yelp Elite reviewers meet up here regulary for a soda! Let's help keep neighborhood institutions like this alive and strong! read more

I love Fairley's. Small, quaint, local. They can do everything the big pharmacies do, but I don't have to walk all the way through a huge retail outlet to get to the register to pick up my scripts. Me and my boyfriend had to switch pharmacies due to the lady on the phone being rude, having an attitude, and being uncooperative. To both of us. On two separate days, relating to two separate prescriptions. Switched to Walgreens and haven't had a problem since. They either need to fire her or she's gonna keep drawing people away. read more

Very disappointed with the service and coffee from Rosebridge. I ordered a drip, was given an Americano without any acknowledgement or explanation. Also, was charged an extra $.50 for a splash of milk for the drip, that I didn't receive. There are many other places close by with better service and standard of coffee than here. read more

I can't say enough wonderful things about Fairley's Pharmacy. They've been compounding a medication for me for several years. They are kind, caring, organized, friendly, efficient and professional. Their phone system is easy to navigate for refills or leaving a message. Messages and refills are done extremely quickly and are always accurate. When you do need to talk to a staff member, they answer the phone quickly and are very knowledgeable. I no longer need my specialty medication so I left them a message letting them know I won't need their services and to thank them. My call was returned and they expressed their thanks to me for my patronage. Fairley's Pharmacy offers a type of customer service not seen or experienced in many years. Awesome staff. Great service. After waiting 10 days for medication from a mail order pharmacy, they still hadn't shipped it! The medication was absolutely essential, so my doctor called Fairley's. They texted me 15 minutes later to let me know everything was ready. When I call, it takes about 45 seconds to get through to someone even on their busiest days. Wow, real service!! If you're sick to death of chain grocery store pharmacies and conglomo-corp mail order places that put you on hold for 45 minutes, switch to Fairley's They're fairly awesome. read more

I really like this pharmacy and it's very convenient. But they lose two stars for having a phone system that is incredibly unreliable. A couple weeks ago I called and it wouldn't even pick up. Tried to call several times that day and when I finally got through they said yeah we are having some problems with the phone system. Today I called and it said something about an automated attendant and I could press 0 to get to an operator. When I pressed zero it said that that selection was not valid. So I called back three times and tried to get through to somebody and was unsuccessful. On top of that they have a refill website that they use but when I try to create an account it always fails. I tried it twice with two weeks in between. When I talked to the pharmacists about it they said that they were working on fixing that. It's a good pharmacy and they are very friendly but their tech issues make it frustrating to work with them. read more

Avoid if at all possible. The service is not customer based. And the prices for medications are not consistent from month to month. I was a customer for years. I have given this business the benefit of a second chance. They did not disappoint. Still horrible service and prices. So we once again take our business elsewhere. Had to go back and explaine that they are listed in the network and they still couldn't figure it out, so again I left without the medication I needed for a severe sinus infection. Reason #147 why I love them.... Independent pharmacies are the bomb and Fairley's delivers. Case in point...my doctor's office was completing OFF LINE yesterday...could not access ANY of my records and I needed an rx refilled. When it comes to situations like this you need a good advocate on your corner and you won't find that with with big box chains. Fairley's figured it all out for me. Fairley's has recently been sold and is under new management! I have used Fairley's pharmacy for 20 years. Never had a problem until now. They refused to fill my prescription for misoprotol a drug that has many uses, ONE being to end pregnancy. My surgeon had called this in to take before my procedure. I got a phone message within the hour (unusual) telling me they did not have it in stock and I need to call around and find a pharmacy that will fill it and they would transfer the prescription. I called and spoke to a women who said that they had just thrown out an expired bottle and they would not be reordering because it was "too expensive" to have a drug they didn't sell. I questioned her about pro-life and she said that it had many uses beside ending pregnancy. Many women are given this drug to end a pregnancy where the fetus has died, not to end an unwanted pregnancy. It saddens me to be moving my business since they are no longer able to fulfill ALL my pharmaceutical needs. I encourage others who are pro-choice to reconsider supporting this pharmacy. read more

After many, many Walgreens screw-ups (including filling Rxs at the wrong strength and caring not one bit that they did so) I knew it was time for a new pharmacy. If the only type of pharmacy you've ever used are large corporate chains you will be astounded by the difference in professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail. I choose to have my scrips mailed to my house on a one-month schedule and it's both convenient and reliable. It's been 6 months and I couldn't be happier. I've tried the soda fountain a few times and like this level of service, it's a welcome blast from the past. Don't wait to switch like I did. I came here when Freddie's ran out of my prescription and told me they had no idea when they would receive more of it. Fairleys pharmacy had my prescription filled before I even had my malt finished. It's nice to wait for medication that is filled quickly in a calm cool relaxing environment with a drink, unlike other places where you wait in a long line to drop off and then wait in a long line to pick up hours or days later. They have some cool historical pharmaceutical memorabilia on display and a neat cafe/soda shop with a few unusual drinks that I have never heard of... Egg Cream consists of neither egg nor cream but is a mixture of sparkling water, milk, and chocolate. Phosphates, are made with phosphoric acid (which is found in a lot of sodas) and is a sweet & tangy flavored sparkling soda water drink that comes in fun colors like red and green. They also have classics like milkshakes, malts, floats, sundaes, and Italian sodas as well as espresso drinks and chai tea. I will start off by saying that I can't comment on the pharmacy aspect of this place. My boyfriend and I came here solely for the soda/milkshakes that have been in this town since 1918! And I can't express this enough -- I WAS SO EXCITED TO COME HERE! It's been in my bookmarks for forever and I was looking forward to having a milkshake in one of those old-fashioned glasses for the very first time (lameee, i know) but ALSO because i heard great things about their drinks (esp the phosphate soda). We ordered a passion fruit phosphate soda and a coffee bean milkshake (don't remember the name). Although both drinks tasted delicious, the customer service here left a foul taste in my mouth and both of us didn't seem to enjoy our drinks after ordering them. By far, I experienced some of the worst customer service ever. The employee serving us was a blond-ish middle-aged lady who just was NOT having it. Perhaps she was having a bad day? It wasn't just us, she was really rude to the lady that ordered after us. Needless to say, she wanted us out the door ASAP and made that clear with attitude, etc. I've worked in customer service for over 4 years, I know what it's like to deal with people all day. I also know better than to take out my frustration/attitude on customers. Won't be coming here again. read more

I have a super rare blood cancer which, if we're being honest, is already kind of a bummer, so I don't need any additional stress. There's a (formerly local) pharmacy less than a mile from my house but with one of my meds EVERY refill was becoming a battle. At one point I left the counter in tears and called my doctor who recommended we try Fairley's. It's been several months and the difference between local and big chain is NOT negligible. The loop between my house and Fairley's is 15 miles and I'm FINE with the distance. Pride of ownership: helpful professional pharmacists, kind efficient staff. My questions always get answered, everything's timely and above board. Today they switched my generic,TOLD ME it was a different brand, and offered assistance if necessary. If that seems like it should be the norm it's not, and to someone like me it means a lot because my system is weirdly vulnerable right now. It also feels important to mention that sometimes I'm too sick to drive so my husband will have to pick up my RXs and everyone at Fairley's is always nice to him. That, too, makes a huge difference in our present situation. read more

This place is a time machine back to the 1950's. Not the commercialized retro grill kind of place... But a soda fountain frozen in time. They still had their 1950's pastel green Hamilton Beach mixers humming away. A big Steel can of straws, Rasberry Phosphate anyone? Anyhow service was from a really friendly local high school kid. Fast and Friendly. We sat at the soda fountain bar and ordered a Vanilla Shake to share. It was homemade ice cream and it was the best. The shakes were made smooth and very thick. And Very tasty. While drinking our shake we saw him make several cones too. Packs them really tight with ice cream and then a big scoop on top. 72nd and Sandy is a bit our of our way.... Portland used to have dozens of soda fountains/grills all over town. Three of my favorites were: -Seaton's Pharmacy (right across from where I was born at the old Portland Adventist Hospital. Drugstore Cowboy directed by Gus Van Sant was also filmed there. don't even know wnen it closed). -Another one (name forgotten) was in the Medical Arts Building downtown where my PCP used to practice and is now The Daily Feast. -One of the last surviving ones that I know of is Fairley's Pharmacy on the corner of about 72nd & SE Sandy. Ron and I were out after work trying to stay cool and thought we'd stop and have a milkshake. 100+ degree temps require a treat, right? Fairley's Pharmacy has been in business since 1920. My dad's business was nearby, so I had the fun of getting treats with him here. When I started school, the visits leveled off, and truthfully I haven't been back since. Therefore, my memories remain vague. The young lady "soda jerk" (and so not a jerk) was one of the best servers I've had in recent memory. She managed to make soda fountain creations for six people (ice cream scooped by hand) and chatting with everybody and serving ice water at the same time. She was even kind enough to listen to my memories of coming in to visit in childhood. We both burst out laughing when I commented, "Gosh, I bet you've never heard stories like that;" she has many times before. The soda fountain area is looking a little rough around the edges, and as one of the other reviewers pointed out sprucing the area up would not take away from the charm. The ice cream creations were delicious and made from quality Umpqua ice cream. It is very clean. There is no public restroom for use. There is really only parking on the very busy Sandy Boulevard. I havent used the delivery but it is a great option to have. Things are ready when they say they will be which is not the case at the major pharmacies anymore. 3 strikes!! Over a year ago I would have given this pharmacy 5 stars plus!! At that time they were great everything went smoothly when picking up my mothers prescriptions. They were always ready to go and phone calls were answered fast and effectively. Now 100 percent negative experience in the last 6 months plus! Strike one! I've been put on hold several times when I call once for 20 minutes, then when someone picked up they had no idea what I was holding for after explaining to three different people already! Strike two! I've always called ahead to pick up my mothers prescriptions so they would be ready to go when I get there. In the last 6 months they were never ready to go and waiting is now the new norm. Plus there seems to be a-lot of confusion about her prescriptions now. Insurance confusion billing errors etc. Strike 3! My mother had to pay out of pocket for a large amount that as it turned out the insurance was NOT billed or billed correctly. I do have more complaints but I'm hoping anyone reading this gets the picture . All I can say is think twice before getting your prescriptions here. It's sad because my mother has been using this pharmacy for several years and the change has been quite unsettling. read more

Alright, here goes my second 5* review for a PDX business. Fairley's earns my love and loyalty because it offers more than just nostalgia...though that alone might get it 4*s from me! I like to patronize locally owned businesses, but I am a BIG supporter of neighborhood pharmacies. I don't really have any regular drug prescriptions, but the next time I need to fill a 'scrip this will be my spot. Of course they sell all the usual independent drug store items (over-the-counter meds, band-aids, etc), and yes these things are a little pricier than say, a Target or Freddies. But it still feels good to provide business to a place that actually HAS to care about it's customers and provide that little something extra called service! But what brought us into Fairley's this past weekend was the old time soda fountain; a real, honest-to-goodness hand pulled, homemade soda fountain, not to be mistaken with one of those self-serve soda machines you'd find at every Plain Pantry. We had just gotten some doughnuts at Annie's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/annies-donuts-portland#hrid:Ycn969hwgVqJNkEXo5yCqQ) about a half-block away, and My Lady was looking for an iced coffee so we strolled on up to Fairley's. Near the back of their small shop, just off to the side of the pharmacy counter, is a sight that could make you believe the front door to Fairley's is actually a portal through time taking you back 50, 60, 80 years into any small town Chemist in middle America. There sits polished wood bar, with fixed, spinning bar stools, and a menu board proudly announcing, amongst other things, handmade PHOSPHATE SODAS! Wow, I'll bet you could poll 100 Portlanders at random and not find 10 who have even heard of a grape, or lime, or vanilla phosphate. They have ridiculously cheap daily specials (my 16 oz blackberry soda was only $1), but their regular prices look shockingly close to what they must have been like half a century ago. Including my soda, 2 bucks and 2 quarters also got My Lady the iced coffee she'd been jonesing for, and they even let her pour it herself to ensure she got exactly the right coffee-to-cream balance. They also have espresso drinks, if you need more kick. They even had a friendly, chipper young teenager working the fountain (I won't call her a soda jerk, lest people think I'm lobbing an insult), who happily cleared up the little mess we made on the counter. I wonder if she or her friends realize that by working at Fairley's she's continuing a tradition and link to the past that no $tarbucks or Cold$tones could ever hope to duplicate? They have handmade ice cream, with rotating seasonal flavors, and they're happy to serve it on a cone, or as a milkshake or malt. This is really the type of place that's almost impossible to find anywhere in America these days, yet there it is right in the heart of the Roseway neighborhood here in our fair city of Portland. Stopping by Fairley's for a soda or a malt is a real treat that I highly recommend you indulge in early and often...even if it's out of your way! You won't be disappointed, and after enjoying a soda flavored the way you like it, you'll wonder why we're all willing to settle for just a mass produced coke or pepsi. read more

Ron Howard has always confused me. He was all black & white in Mayberry, right? And then when I watched Happy Days & American Graffiti, I guess I must've thought they were actually filmed in the 1950s, because when I saw him in, say, 2001, talking about a movie he'd directed, I thought: sure, he's no fresh-faced Richie and certainly grown up from Opie, but apart from the hair loss: WOW, he's really held up! Just how old IS he?! By the time he was the disembodied voice of Arrested Development, I'd given up trying to figure it out and was dreaming that Ron & I were madly in love. Well, one dream, anyway. Um, so what were we talking about? Ah, Fairley's. Yes. When we walked into this corner pharmacy & soda shoppe, we checked out the menu and asked about the egg cream: what is it? The girl behind the pharmacy counter called down some stairs to someone named Cuddy? Cubby? Fairley? and a voice came up: soda water, cream & chocolate syrup. And egg. She smiled and nodded as she relayed to us that Ducky (I'm just gonna go with that) was the resident expert on all things soda-shopped. She said he'd be right with us. Excellent. We settled into our seats at the original fountain counter and gawked and waited. It's old, folks. Not the new made to look old that's all the rage. It's well-preserved but also wooden and well-loved and a little dusty in the corners. It has been there since the place was built. And people still get their drugs at the pharmacy. As well as romance novels and greeting cards. So it's got a little Walgreens feeling mixed in. The fountain selections are generally simple. The ice creams are from Umpqua or Tillamook, one of the standards, and served as milkshakes or scooped into Corelle bowls, just like at grandma's house. And there's a short list of old-timey specials, such as the Yoohoo-esque egg cream and the acidic Green River phosphate. The ones Ducky knows all about. My expectations of Ducky were set. I was ready for the grandfatherly antique-store expert to school us on how pharmacies worked in the olden days, and how soda fountains used to exist so the medicine could get mixed in to something more palatable, a la Mary Poppins. I expected him to pop his gnarled knuckles and wiggle his white mustache while his eyes crinkled behind smudged glasses. Instead, up from the basement pops a fresh and friendly face, with all the swagger, enthusiasm and endearing awkwardness of every high-school student. We had ourselves a real live soda jerk! I got all kindsa lost in time. How old are you? How old am I? Where is this place in time? I still don't know for sure, but I think Ron might like it. I'll take him there in my next dream. read more

The hubby and I were looking for some milkshakes nearby and we found this place on Yelp under "milkshakes". Mmm-mmm-mmm! Thank you, Yelp! I got the Oreo shake with chocolate ice cream(what can I say, I LOVE chocolate.) and the hubby got all crazy and ordered the regular Peanut Butter/Chocolate shake and ADDED Oreos to it! The gal at the counter didn't even flinch at his off the menu order, and whipped our treats up with a smile. The milkshakes were delicious and the price was pretty sweet, too. Now that my eyes have been opened to the sweet chocolately delights at Fairley's, they will definitely be seeing a LOT more of me. I'm very impressed. After two years of dealing with chain pharmacy fails, one after another after another, and then dealing with Fairley's, I'm never going anywhere else. Although the price I pay for my prescriptions is competitive or lower than the larger chains, Fairley's adds considerable value by being who they are: kind, helpful, service-oriented, and accurate. Once, they were out of stock of one of my meds, and it wouldn't be in stock until the day I was leaving for the east coast. So you know what they did? They mailed my prescription at no extra charge, all the way across the country, and I got it before I ran out. I've called a few times during the transition of my meds from the chain pharmacy, and the pharmacist himself often answers the phone, knows exactly who I am, and knows the answer to my question immediately. That's not the kind of service you'll get at a chain - that is, if you can even get someone to answer the phone at all. *coughWalgreenscough* The pharmacy *coughSafeway* I was using before Fairley's had so many problems with misplaced prescriptions, it probably took up a lot of my doctor's staff time dealing with all the mistakes and issues. I can see why my doctor's office loves Fairley's - their organization and competence means no extra phone calls to the doctor's office to straighten out the tenth instance of prescription "lost" by a pharmacy tech. The national chain pharmacies have become a complete clustermuck, riddled with disorganized, uncaring and often rude staff. When you're sick or in pain, you don't need the added stress of dealing with a disgruntled, overworked and underpaid pharmacist who is just showing up to get a paycheck and taking all his frustrations out on the customers. You need to meet and talk to the folks at Fairley's to really understand exactly how bad the service is at chain pharmacies. I might try the soda fountain one of these days, too. read more

Sure, it's a pharmacy, and a good place to pick up a prescription or a Hallmark greeting card, but MORE IMPORTANTLY, Fairley's pharmacy is home to one of the few surviving soda fountains in this city, complete with dark-stained wood counter and stools. Since 1920, Fairley's has been a great place for getting shakes, ice cream, egg creams, malts, phosphates (what the heck?!). Also, according to the historical information available on the counter, "There used to be a trap door in the back of the pharmacy. Only two people fell through.
