Rae is an amazing teacher. So full of energy and fun. Well worth the $10 per class.

I took a trial week's worth of zumba class at the Alameda Athletic club with my friend and the price + commitment was too intense for me.

I recently joined In-Shape after spending many years at upscale gyms, and honestly, I'm pleasantly…read moresurprised by how much I like it. The facility is located in the former business fair center in Concord, so it's quite big. And unlike some enormous gyms where everything feels crammed into one giant open space, the layout here is actually quite thoughtful. The first floor has several group fitness studios, a VTL classroom, locker rooms, weight rooms, six racquetball courts, and an indoor basketball court that also accommodates pickleball. Upstairs, you'll find another extensive selection of strength-training equipment, plus ellipticals, treadmills, recumbent bikes, and stationary bikes. There's another large group fitness studio, a spin room, stretching area, and additional exercise spaces. Equipment is well spread out, so you can usually find your own space without feeling like you're working out shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone else. And importantly, the place is very clean and relatively quiet. That makes a big difference. There's also an outdoor five-lane swimming pool, apparently around 25 meters, which is a nice bonus. The selection of group fitness classes is comprehensive, with classes offered every day. Attendance seems quite good, too. The locker rooms are spacious and clean. Parking is ridiculously easy compared with many gyms. There's plenty of parking right in front, plus street parking if needed. The front-desk staff are reasonably friendly and responsive. Of course, it's not perfect. A few things clearly need attention. The digital clock in the basketball court has apparently been showing the wrong time for quite a while and still hasn't been fixed. The AC in the basketball court could be better, and the racquetball courts are even worse. These seem like relatively easy problems to identify and fix, so hopefully management will do a regular walk-through of the facility and take care of them. But overall, this is a very good gym for the money. For a community like Concord, I think it's an excellent fit. You have younger people serious about strength and fitness, as well as plenty of baby boomers who want to stay active and healthy. With the good variety of equipment, classes, racquetball, pickleball, basketball, swimming, and plenty of space, there's something here for just about everyone. After years of paying more for upscale gyms, I'm genuinely impressed by what In-Shape offers at this price point. A very solid value for Concord and the surrounding area.

My main gripes are: -Facilities seem to be down often, taking a good while to be repaired. Whether this be the pool heater, sauna, or steam room. It seems like something is always out of order. -Re-racking weights. This is the worst gym I've belonged to for this specific category. I know it's difficult to get people to put weights away after use, but this gym specifically is completely out of order with this. I'm surprised whenever I approach a machine that does not have plates already on it. Overall a good gym for the price, but quality with facilities and gym ethics could get much better.

Unfortunately, my recent experience with the manager makes it hard to recommend right now. I was billed twice for my membership due to what appeared to be a billing error on the gym's end. An associate worked with me to resolve it, and as far as I knew, the issue was fixed. About a week later, however, the same double-billing issue happened again. When I brought it up with the same associate, he advised me to speak with the manager directly. A few days later, I sat down with the manager and explained the full situation: I had been charged twice, an associate had already tried (unsuccessfully) to resolve it, and I was now dealing with the same problem again. Throughout the conversation, the manager came across as visibly disinterested and annoyed. When I jokingly suggested we could call it even if I just grabbed a protein shake from their fridge, he responded with, "I don't see why you think you're entitled to one. It's not my problem." When I explained that I felt entitled to a refund -- both because the double billing was their error and because the issue persisted even after I'd already sought help from an associate -- he flatly refused. He then told me he intended to write up the associate who had tried to help me, which frankly felt like retaliation for the associate simply doing his job. Afterward, I mentioned what happened to another staff member, who wasn't surprised at all and openly referred to this manager as the "worst manager" they'd worked under. This gym has real potential, but as long as this manager is in charge of handling member issues, I don't see it living up to it. I the meantime, I recommend UFC Gym, 24 Hr Fitness or even Planet Fitness. I sincerely hope upper management takes note and makes a change.

The staff members, especially one of the front desk ladies and CJ, came across as unfriendly and unapproachable. They rarely smile, and every interaction feels more focused on enforcing rules than providing good customer service. I was on a phone call while exercising, and I understand there is a policy against phone calls in the gym. I fully respect that rule. However, there is a respectful and professional way to communicate with customers. Instead, I was approached in a very abrupt manner and told, "No phone calls. If you don't like it, you can cancel your membership." The conversation immediately shifted to contracts and policies rather than customer service. Yes, I signed the agreement and understand the rules, but being friendly, respectful, and customer-focused should still matter. The interaction made me feel like they were more interested in getting rid of members than helping them. When I said, "Okay, go ahead and cancel it," there wasn't even an attempt to understand my concern or retain me as a customer. That was disappointing. To the owner: I believe customer-facing roles require people who can communicate policies professionally while still making members feel welcome. The gym itself may be fine, but the customer service experience needs significant improvement.
