Everything was packed well. Flavors were great. I thought the dal a little salty but my wife thought it was great. I wish we had ordered just the onion naan, it was great! Carmelized and delicious. The raita was delicious. Pretty sure it's homemade. Creamy and flavorful. Overall it deserves a 5 for food , prices and service and we will be back again. It's extremely hot inside, and they're being really cheap no AC at all, just a shaky fan that looks like it might fall off the ceiling. The server only brought water with no ice, and it's room temp water instead of a cold one. Honestly, it really feels like we're back in India. The food was average! Clay Oven Indian Cuisine - A Love Story Between Regret and Indigestion If there were ever a giant neon warning sign that we were about to step into a culinary nightmare, it was the complete emptiness that greeted us at 5:45 PM on a Sunday. A restaurant should be buzzing at that hour. Instead, the only sound was a cheap robotic chime at the door--something between a doorbell and a distress signal. We were a married couple of thirty years, out to enjoy a romantic dinner. Instead, we got what I can only describe as a hostage situation with curry. The "Please Wait to Be Seated" sign stood there awkwardly, like a Walmart greeter who had given up on life. After an uncomfortable pause, a woman appeared and sat us beneath the world's largest television (at least 120 inches) blasting a psychedelic wormhole screensaver. I briefly wondered if we had wandered into a low-budget alien abduction. Menus and two miniature Costco water bottles arrived. That was the last time we saw her. Screams erupted from behind a half-wall (possibly the "kitchen," possibly a daycare), followed by another employee who looked annoyed that I dared interrupt her table-wiping to place an order. We went all in: goat curry, chicken tikka masala, saffron rice, naan, tandoori chicken, and two beers. When the tandoori arrived, it came on a sizzling plate that produced enough smoke to convince me the fire department should be called. The smoke smelled like cremated upholstery. The chicken itself was somehow both mushy and charred at the same time, like it had been microwaved, dropped on a grill, then run over by a lawn mower. I tapped out after three bites. My wife--God bless her optimism--ate more. This was her fatal error. The goat curry was edible in the sense that motor oil is flammable: functional, but not advisable. Halfway through the meal, the restaurant TV spontaneously chose "Desi Hip Hop" on YouTube, cranked the volume, and blasted us out like an eviction notice. The next morning, on my way to work, the true consequences hit. I pulled into a gas station and proceeded to dramatically eject Clay Oven's gift to my digestive tract right next to the gasoline pumps. Nothing screams "romance" like projectile curry at dawn. Final Verdict: Clay Oven Indian Cuisine didn't just serve us dinner. It served us a cautionary tale. If you're looking for dinner and a horror story, this place is a two-for-one deal. Otherwise, run. Tried to call in a order for pick up, but they didn't answer their phone. Went to their website, so I could order directly and not have to rely on a company like DoorDash. Their website had the option to order online, with an option for pick-up or delivery. I thought, okay cool, they deliver!!! (Unfortunately not) I placed the order, was given an estimated delivery time of half an hour, then waited for about an hour and a half. When I tried to look up the delivery status, the text link they provided led me to A GODDAMN DOORDASH website. Even though I went out of my way to order directly from them, I still got a DoorDash driver with a DoorDash delivery fee. That aside, the food came late and subpar. There are so many good Indian places around here; Curry Club, Indian Oven, Royal Indian... unfortunately I tried to support the one closest to my home, much to my own disappointment. Happy to say I found another really yummy Indian/Nepalese spot! My husband is Nepali so I defer to his opinion for authenticity and this place definitely has it. We came on a week night and were the only table dining in. I wish it weren't so as they deserve more business! We had butter chicken makhani and the chicken tikka masala; upgraded to thali (plates). The food was great, there was only two people in the entire restaurant. I think that's because the prices are à la carte and overpriced. They do much better with a fixed menu option for dinner. It's a cozy little spot, and we snagged a booth behind the entrance. It's got the kind of vibe that would be perfect for wanting to warm up on a rainy night. We haven't had much luck in our quest for solid Indian food since we moved in. We're fans of the Clay Oven in Vacaville (no connection to this location, we confirmed). I came here because I have an allium allergy and the owners said they could accommodate. "Jane" diets also can't do allium for religious reasons so some Indian place are very accommodating. So, i ordered exactly what they told me to from the email and actually just gave them the email and when the food came it was full of onions. Plus, they served the chicken which did not need onions...with onions all over it. They kinda went out of their way to make me not be able to eat the food. I don't like confrontation so just asked to leave...they took off one dish as an apology. Still had to spend $45 for food I couldn't eat. I think I've found a new favorite restaurant. Though it's pricey, it is quality. Food: Food was delicious. I've found that I love how Nepalese style Indian cuisine tastes. No need to add anything. I ordered takeout chicken tikka masala thali platter. The chicken was fabulous and enough tender, juicy chicken breast to make me happy. The vegetable curry had tofu and was absolutely delicious. I could skip the lentil dal, that's just me. The rice, cooked perfectly and delicious. Naan, delicious as well. Service: The young gal was polite, calm, helpful. I was exhausted and ordered from a table. I clarified takeout after asking if they were about to close at 9:00 (so tired, it was only 7:50, but I thought it was 8:50 since the restaurant was empty) and I didn't want to hold them up as the only customer dining in. I was being gracious. My food arrived as takeout and I received a departure type greeting. I was confused. I didn't pay. I asked her if I paid, she said, oops, you were seated so I didn't ask for payment. I waited to pay. I said she could give me a discount [for saving her butt], but she graciously said she couldn't. I am irritated with myself for tipping her when it was take-out and I should not have tipped her for being forgetful. I hate feeling obligated to tip everyone. LOL. Cleanliness: Tables seemed clean. Chicken tandoori: arrived piping hot on a cast iron plate with some vegetables. I've never been a huge fan of tandoori chicken bc I preferred the curry dishes but hubby loves it. Had the potato + cauliflower dish and potato + eggplant dish. These were supposed to be onion free for hubby but they weren't so he couldn't eat them. I liked them although I might have picked other dishes if we weren't told they'd make these 2 especially for him. Customer service was good. Very close to where we live. Placed a pickup order over the phone, said it would be ready in 20 minutes & it was ready right when I arrived! We ordered the Chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, a side of rice & garlic naan. The garlic naan was very good. The butter chicken had big chunks of chicken but wasnt super flavorful. Same with the chicken tikka masala, it wasnt bursting with flavor & the chicken was much smaller chunks. I had such a lovely experience here. The food was amazing and the service was good. Their version of chole bhature was so tasty! Their mango lassi was also perfectly sweet and tangy. I also prejudged the butter chicken because it came out in that awful, artificial color. I've had experiences before where it just tastes chalky and powdery. That wasn't the case here! I just literally walked out of this resistant after a dissatisfied meal. Here are the reasons: Paneer tikka masala - ordered it spicy, and it turned out to be sweet, it could easily replace dessert after we have a meal. We didn't want to do the 'usual' Chicken Tika Masala or Butter Chicken...and my wife and I are trying to reduce our dairy intake and thus avoid the cream-based options when possible. + Sitting down the place felt clean and the hostess/waitress was friendly and helpful. + We did the non-veggie sample platter of chicken pakoras, meat MOMOs, shrimp pakoras, chicken tikas, and naan. It was very good and we'd order this again since we like a variety of flavors in our meals. + Wife ordered the Chicken Mushroom Masala at medium spicey. The dish was more on the tomato flavor side (as expected). The requested medium spiciness was spicey enough for her without blowing her out. She enjoyed it and would order again. + I ordered the Chicken Coconut Curry. I said spicey, which was not specific enough when the order arrived and thus was similar in heat to my wife's medium spicey dish. I REALLY liked this dish! I would order this every time in the future. + We ordered the naan basket of regular, garlic, and onion. My wife didn't like the onion as much, but I thought it was great for dipping (we still had some sauces left from the appetizer). We were unsure of why the garlic was yellow in color as if something was added to it. We did appreciate the naan wasn't dripping in butter. Even the garlic naan wasn't overly buttered but was perfect for a plain naan with lots of garlic pieces on top. + The restroom was also clean...for the most part (door handles and light switches could have used an extra wipe down). +/- Yes, it was nearly $70 for lunch for the two of us, after a 15% tip. + Even with the small bowl of meat and sauce for $15...with everything we ordered and plenty of dipping naan into the various sauces we did have leftovers. OVERALL: The other option we considered was to drive from Folsom to Roseville to have an Indian buffet (which runs the two of us about $40 these days). But the flavor of the food at Clay Oven was SO MUCH better; plus the flavor was through-and-through the food, not just in the sauce on the surface, which is a typical experience of buffets. Been here a few times over the years. Their food is good to really good, depending on the day. The Himalayan samosas are my favorite! They're a perfect size, smaller than other samosas I've had, so there's a better crust to filling ratio. The chutneys served with them are also tasty. Where they fall down consistently is service. While somewhat friendly, it is most often painfully slow, even when we're close to the only people in the entire restaurant. And things from our order are often forgotten until we remind them. We shared the "non-veggie couples special" on the menu ($49) that came with choice of drink for each person, a generous appetizer assortment platter (crispy shrimp pakora, smoky tandoori chicken, juicy chicken momo's & sauces), a sharing salad, two curries: chicken tikka masala & coconut lamb, curry saffron rice, curried veggies, delicious garlic herb nan, and gulab jamun for dessert. I loved the creamy, tender lamb curry the most, and the nan was some of the best I've had in the area. Such a great deal. Restaurant has new owners and a new menu. WE tried it tonight. It's not quite as good as before. Tried some basics. Tandoori chicken, saag paneer (it was called something else), lamb biryani, and an appetizer. Tandoori good, saag paneer pretty good. Lamb biryani wasn't hot per order and not as flavorful. Split a non veg lunch special ($10) and a vegan Thali special ($14), both of which we ventured at 'hot spicy'. Turned out that was the perfect heat level for us, as it was spicy, but not too hot to eat. YMMV. The non veg lunch special comes with 'your choice of Curry Entrée', which we thought meant we had to pick one of the curry dishes (Chicken Curry, Shrimp Curry, etc.). No! You can select almost ANYTHING as long as it includes a sauce. We chose the Chef Special Chicken (boneless chicken in a coconut-based curry flavored sauce with onion & basil). The photos below give an idea of what you get (a bunch of rice is covered up by the Naan in the non veg lunch special - the Naan usually comes buttered, but we prefer it dry). Positives included great flavor, freshness, and taste. The food was just delicious, and included a few items we'd never had before (e.g., veggie Mo:Mo). The restaurant was not busy, the food arrived in about 15-20 minutes after ordering. For the two of us, there was far too much rice included, especially since both orders included bread (one Naan and one Chapati). Some Thali plates come with more food than others; these were a bit on the lighter side, especially with a few of the items (e.g., no more than 5 or 6 spoonfuls of soup). When all-you-can-eat buffets are priced the same or cheaper, this is truly a quality of quantity choice (which is fine, but would be helped with some slightly more generous helpings). Service was friendly and prompt, but oddly the waitress never checked on us after bringing our food. Perhaps if we had needed something, she would have noticed us looking up; who knows?
