Food: Everything we had was well seasoned, although some of the meat was dry due to sitting out. Fair variety. The mango pudding was something I don't usually see so that was nice. I didn't see free chai but they brought us garlic naan that was included. Interior: Sophisticated lighting and design choices. Date worthy. Midday the restaurant was pretty empty but I can see it being busy at night. Value: I would say overpriced for lunch. We came midday and didn't expect to pay as much as it was (it was either 29.99 or 39.99). This is the only spot in the area that offers a lunch buffet, and I've been twice. The first time, they had this amazing flatbread--different from naan--that paired perfectly with the curry. I tried asking what it was called, but was simply told it was "flatbread." Unfortunately, it wasn't available on my second visit. The buffet includes the usual favorites like chicken tandoori, fish pakora and they rotate dishes such as butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. The chicken in all of these was tender and not dry. I especially enjoyed the butter chicken, along with the corn and aloo masala. Their garlic naan is also well done--soft and chewy. I kept to the basics and didn't try the lamb or some of the other dishes. Maybe I'll work up the nerve to give them a shot next time I'm here. Service could use some improvement. Despite the buffet not being very busy, it took quite a while for our naan to arrive. I also had to wait a long time for a soda refill--so long that we thought they might have mistaken it as us being finished. When the refill finally came, it didn't have any ice. Had lunch buffet here with some family and I have to say it was good. The restaurant is very roomy with lots of booth seatings. It wasn't busy at all but the food was still good.. service was ok.. a little slow. Took her a good while to bring us our refills after taking our drink cup.. maybe she forgot I don't know lol. I had about a plate and half and was so full.. I tend to pick the same things to eat at an Indian buffet lol They had a variety of items on the buffet selection .. a must try guys .. Solid Indian spot, pricy but they never miss the mark of great Indian cuisine! They give a lot of naan - 1 can be shared between two people unless you're a carb fiend (no judgment here lol). Came on a Sunday afternoon and was seated quickly. You could order from the menu or eat from the buffet and we opted for the buffet. The buffet was averaged sized. The buffet had a salad, some fruit, rice, fried items, curries, and dessert. There was a good balance of meat and vegetarian options. The food tasted pretty good. There was more spice on what I thought would be milder dishes, which was fine for the adults but a little harder for the kids. The kids did enjoy the fries though. We loved that they gave fresh naan. We did wish they had butter chicken and samosas. Service was good. They refilled items quickly. They also topped our water often as well as pick up finished plates often. The inside is pretty big. Reviews are misleading. Food lacks taste. We were party of 7 - Sunday afternoon and 0 service. No one to refill water or ask for Naan and the worst part they were not even refilling the buffet items. The pictures speak for itself. Chicken Tikka was overdone. Fish had no taste. Unfortunately none of the items were worth the price that they are charging. The food here is good. The ambiance is nice, set up looks like they are trying to be on the classy side. On This night, the bar tender did t come to work. Our server tried to make one of the drinks on the menu but it didnt really work out. Several times lol. "A" for effort. Hubby and I came here tonight and we're very happily stuffed. It's been about 10 years since I came here last, and it was as comfortable as I remember, with quiet music, comfortable seating, and warm decorations. We could already smell the food before walking in - hubby's comment was that you know it's good when you can smell good smells before coming in! We ordered fish pakoras and vegetable samosas for appetizer, which promptly and completely disapeared. For dinner, we went with the shrimp tikka masala, aloo gobi, and their creamy chicken, with basmati rice and garlic naan. We requested mild for the spices, which was done quite well. All the food was hot, well cooked, and flavorful. We got here too late for chai tea - they had run out, someone before us had ordered a ton of it! - so we'll have to come back earlier to have that too. Pooja, our server, was very attentive, and she was assisted by a few other gentlemen who promptly brought the food. We ended up chatting a bit with her over a dessert of hot gulab jamun. Food is amazing. My husband and I ate at India Oven almost 3 yrs ago and tonight it was just the same. We're from the Bay Area and it's hard to find great authentic restaurants in Citrus Heights. India Oven is flavor-able and full of spices. We order masala chicken, coconut curry chicken, lamb curry, lamb biryani samosas and tandoori chicken. Indian Oven - A Consistently Fantastic Experience This review is specifically for the Citrus Heights location, but I'll also touch on my experiences at the Elk Grove location and my general thoughts on Indian Oven as a restaurant chain. Indian Oven is, without a doubt, my favorite restaurant. The food is always fresh, served quickly, and consistently delicious. The service is excellent--staff members are friendly, polite, and happy to help if you're unfamiliar with Indian cuisine. Beautiful Décor & Presentation One thing I absolutely love about all Indian Oven locations is their elegant and inviting atmosphere. Each restaurant is beautifully decorated, featuring linen tablecloths, red cloth napkins, and uniquely shaped, sturdy white dishware that adds a touch of sophistication to the dining experience. Whether you're enjoying a casual meal or celebrating a special occasion, the ambiance elevates the experience. My Go-To Dishes Some of my all-time favorite dishes include: Lamb Saag Aloo Gobi Shahi Paneer Chicken Tikka Masala Gobi Manchurian Chicken Malai Tikka (more on this below) Any and all of their Naans For dessert, I highly recommend the Elaichi Kheer and Gulab Jamun, and if you're looking for a refreshing drink, the Mango Lassi is a must-try. It's also a good cool-down treat for those whose mouths get warm when eating Indian food. A Dish I Would Skip While most of the dishes I've tried have been incredible, the Chicken Malai Tikka was a disappointment. The chicken was basically just grilled--there wasn't a single ounce of seasoning or flavor on its own. However, the side sauces--tamarind chutney and coriander-mint chutney--were absolutely delicious and helped bring some much-needed flavor to the dish. These are the same side sauces that come with the samosas. Buffet & Other Locations I've attended the buffet at this location multiple times and always had a great experience. I've also dined at the Natomas and Elk Grove locations and found them to be just as wonderful. I have yet to visit the Auburn, Roseville, and Grass Valley locations, but I look forward to trying them. While there are some slight menu variations between locations, one thing that remains consistent is the beautiful décor and warm hospitality at every Indian Oven restaurant. Customization & Spice Levels One thing I really appreciate is that they ask how spicy you'd like your dishes. This is a great perk if you prefer certain dishes to be mild while others pack more heat. It's especially helpful if different people in your party have varying spice tolerances. A Small Critique The samosas have changed slightly over time. While they're still tasty, I've noticed that the dough-to-filling ratio has shifted, with more dough and slightly less stuffing. It's not as extreme as at some other Indian restaurants, but it does feel like a small cost-cutting measure in today's economy. I will say that I prefer the vegetable samosas over the lamb samosas. I wish the lamb samosas had some vegetables mixed in with the meat instead of just seasoned meat. This is purely a personal preference--both are still flavorful, but this is one of my minor critiques. Takeout Quality I've ordered takeout from this location many times, and the quality remains just as good as dining in. Some restaurants cut corners when it comes to takeout, but Indian Oven does not--everything is still fresh and flavorful. Additional Features I haven't personally ordered drinks from the restaurant, but they do offer a variety of beverages. Also, a unique feature of the Citrus Heights location is its banquet hall, which I've seen used for weddings and parties--a great option for hosting special events. Final Thoughts Indian Oven consistently delivers amazing food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether dining in or ordering takeout, I've never been disappointed. No one in the restaurant. Should have been my clue. Guy in front of me took all the tandoori chicken and placed it in his to go container. Stacked so high one fell on the floor and he scooted with his foot. Left everyone else zero. Fish pakora was empty. Got the butter chicken and rice. Chicken tasted leftover and the rice was cold. I asked for more tandoori chicken and was told it would be right out. It took 35 minutes to bring out more and it was a few pieces. By the time my son and i grabbed some there was no more left. A friend recommended this restaurant and I was a bit hesitant because my experience with buffets is the food ends up being way overcooked and old from sitting too long. This was not the case at this restaurant. Everything on the food line was nice and fresh and delicious. I took about 1 tablespoon of each item so that I could taste everything. Everything was delicious and fresh tasting to pick what I wanted to go back and get more of. One of my favorites was the Tandoori Chicken and the Gajar Halwa. My least liked was the Vegetable Pakora. Service was great. The waiters cleared or dirty plates attentively without us feeling rushed and refilled our water several times. The place looks very clean. If I pay for 2 orders of chicken tikka masala that come with rice per rice, you give me one small container of rice for 2 orders - because you assume that's enough ? When I sit down inside the restaurant, somehow the rice amount increases , as it should because I'm paying for 2 right? You are greedy , for a small tub of rice that will cost you less than 10 cents to make. I called today 5/22 at 8:50 pm to speak to the owner , the guy said " hold on " and hung up the phone. Buffet lunch is back; yay! But the price ... OMG. I know everything is more expensive these days, and maybe I'm more price sensitive than most. 2 years ago I thought the $2 hike to $14 was a lot, so it's all relative, I guess. It's an extra $2 on Fri-Sun, by the way. Unlike some of the recent negative reviews, the service we had was stellar. Very friendly, our dishes were promptly removed, and our Naan was brought to our table while we were still waiting in line at the buffet table. My only complaint might be that we were given only 3 pieces of Naan, rather than the usual 4 (one large piece split into 4). But we probably would have been given more if we'd ask, so not really a complaint after all. The food was pretty much as I remember it, the variety and quality unchanged. There's nothing unique or different, though these days just having a buffet is exactly that. If you've had the buffet here anytime in the last 5 years, then you know what to expect, and you're likely to get exactly that. Decent quality, good tasting food, with 4 veg and 5 non-veg entrees, along with some appetizers, rice, Naan, salad, and fruit. Also 2 kinds of dessert (but no chai). read more
