I preferred the creaminess and richness of Mainely Custard over most of the ice cream stands I had also tried. They do sometimes run out of flavors the later you go, while I was in line 2 flavors went out of stock and their labels got pulled off of the wall, it made me sad. lol read more

When we drove by Mainely Custard on our way into Freeport and we just knew we'd be making a stop here at some point. I'm glad we did. It's a pretty typical ice cream stand complete with plenty of parking, plenty of shaded seating and even a talking moose that has a hankering for some delicious custard. Chat him up for some unexpected fun! Staff were friendly, helpful and engaging. The custard itself was really good and definitely worthy of a stop. One of the highlights IMHO is their many vegan options; nearly as numerable as their dairy options. I'm pretty far from a vegan but I do appreciate when places make efforts to be inclusive. I had the maple flavor in a classic sundae. The consistency and texture were perfection but it was lacking a tiny bit in the flavor department. The toppings in the sundae were quality and they allow substitutions and additions if that's your thing. I thought the prices were reasonable given the modern market, especially given that it's a small family owned business and things are small batch made in-house. Like most retail nowadays a small upsize nets you quite a bit more product for only a small price increase. Get the large, you're worth it and can go walk it off at the outlets :) read more

They have plenty of outdoor seating including stools and picnic benches, as well as a talking moose head asking for a bite of custard. The price is fair with one scoop starting at $6 and a large sundae (3-4 scoops) for $10.50. Custard was fairly smooth, but not as creamy as I would've liked. I got their Katahdin sundae so I could try a variety of flavors, and the cashier was very friendly and happy to switch out walnuts instead of health bar crunch, and removed the caramel sauce. I tried the peppermint stick, caramel chocolate brownie, coffee Oreo and blueberry. I stopped by in July with a few friends and we each enjoyed a bunch of great flavors although I am constantly surprised by the price of a cone and it's cost increases over the past 5 years, while in the past 30 years prices barely changed, even so, this group of old ladies enjoyed every bit of our treat. Ok so we had a hit and miss from this frozen custard stand just outside of Freeport. My wife loved her vegan option chocolate that was great she said. She loved that it was vegan which there are not often many places that offer it. So she was happy with her purchase. Now as for mine I was not a fan. As I have recently had gelato and some delicious regular ice cream this just fell flat in comparison. I had the chocolate malt custard and it tasted more like the old school ice milk I had to suffer through as a kid. It brought back some bad dairy memories. I've tried many of their flavors, it's always hit or miss because they only have usually 3 flavors at a time. Chocolate, vanilla, and a 'special limited of time' flavor. I almost always go for the special, some memorable flavors have been the Grapenut and Maple. There are tables and chairs for people to sit at to enjoy, I usually eat mine in the car with the AC on :) I did buy a quart of the Banana frozen custard once on a whim on my way home from work (special treat for me and my bf). Have to say I didn't love it, wouldn't go for that again. Also, probably won't buy a quart of something that I didn't try first beforehand! My bad. The staff are always really sweet and friendly. I loved this place. This was my favorite place to go for ice cream and I recommended it to everyone, including those who were visiting out of state at the business I work at. Unfortunately, with new ownership came some changes that, while not always a bad thing, hurt the quality of the ice cream and prices soared. First things first, the menu has had an overhaul. Many items are no longer available anymore. Some classic favorites have been removed instead for Vegan based ice cream. While I am all for adding Vegan based anything, it was disappointing to see the smaller menu. After looking over the menu, I got a few items for myself and others. We got a pint of cookie dough to take home, a coffee milkshake, a chocolate ice cream with candy and some pumpkin dog ice cream. The total, before any tip, was $40. Holy ****. At first, didn't think anything of it. Inflation issue, new owners, etc. As long as it's still good, I can deal with that. Unfortunately, it was not good. What use to be a creamy, delicious ice cream different from anything else around has turned into a bland, typical, no better than a cheap box of ice cream you can buy for $2 at the gas station. The cookie dough was bland. The chocolate ice cream with candy was fine, but only because of the candy. And the milkshake very disappointing. Not only was it not coffee and just vanilla, when I went back to ask if they got the order right, they informed me they ran out of coffee syrup. So they decided to just give me vanilla and I guess hope I didn't notice. What is also upsetting is they use to use their own custard ice cream to make the shakes, now it's just syrup and soft serve. The dog ice creams brought home where also wasted. The dogs LOVE ice cream, but they wouldn't really touch it. I loved this place for many years. But with the pricing going through the roof, the drop in quality and the customer service sub par, it's quite disappointing that a local favorite has been lost. I will need to now be on the lookout for another great local ice cream shop to recommend to tourist, as I can't in good conscious recommend overpriced ice cream that you can get the same quality from at the local dairy queen. read more

You don't run into a lot of custard places so when we were passing by and saw this we turned around to try out the custard. I've only had frozen custard once before and wasn't sure what to expect but wow, this was absolutely delicious. We went with the banana and it had actual chunks of banana in it and tasted real, not like they added fake flavoring. We also tried the dulce de leche special and it was also amazing. A small is two scoops and really filling but didn't seem to melt as fast as regular ice cream (and it was hot out). There was outside seating so you could rest and enjoy the beautiful summer day - which is exactly what we did. I can't wait to pass by again!! read more

Rt 1, Freeport! Nice stop on a warm day. Very good menu of regular and soft serve ice cream. The only thing I was disappointed about was the "CASH ONLY" sign. I then got excited at the "ATM" sign. Only to find that the ATM on site didn't work. I don't understand how I'm 2017, businesses still only take cash. The custard was good! The menu had floats, splits, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches and other things. I was thoroughly impressed by the fact that, after making the float, they gave the bottle of root beer soda with it. I have been in Freeport, ME two nights, and I have gone to Mainely Custard twice. This custard is AMAZING! They don't have a huge selection of flavors (they actually seem to have more vegan flavors than regular flavors), but there is something to be said for doing a few things and doing them exceptionally well. Last night I got a three scoop (chocolate, Strawberry, and Vegan Watermelon). Tonight I got another three scoop (chocolate, strawberry, vanilla-basically Neapolitan). Both were great! I was appreciative about the vegan watermelon. Even the girl at the counter warned me that it was vegan. I asked if she liked it, and she said "Yes. I just wanted to let you know." Great customer service! I could tell the vegan watermelon was not traditional custard, but it was great! Flavorful & rich. The other flavors were great too. The Neapolitan I made was GREAT! Some of the best strawberry custard I have ever had. There are soft serve options, but if you are going I a custard stand, why are you getting soft serve? GET THE CUSTARD!
