The place was awesome! I had a egg sandwich that was fantastic. It took a while to get it but it was pretty busy. And there was so much to take in that it was cool to just relax. I adore a bakery! As a future owner I hope that I replicate the chill vibe in here. Lots of people coming and going. Lots of bread and cookies. My kids loved the cookies. I loved the bread. The seating was tight but cozy. There was a small kids table in the corner with stuff to keep kids busy. The bathrooms were clean and the place was wide open. I was on a mission to find an apple crumble pie to surprise my partner for his birthday and after searching all over Portland, Big Sky Bread Company seemed like the only bakery that offered the apple crumble pie. I was so relieved to finally find it and placed my order through their website, everything was seamless, almost too good to be true... But of course, as I'm confirming the order with them via email, I got an email asking me when I would like to pick up the pie-- really wasn't sure why they were asking me when the order form online had the option of picking the date/time?? Regardless, I told them the date then they replied saying they wouldn't be able to bake the pie at all and could only offer to refund me or have it ready next week. NEXT WEEK?! For a birthday pie? That completely defeated the point. It's frustrating to see something listed as available for order when it clearly isn't, especially for something as time sensitive as a special occasion. I understand things happen, but if items aren't available or can't be fulfilled, they really shouldn't be on the active online menu. I ordered two days in advance but still ended up scrambling last minute to find a replacement. Really disappointing experience after being so excited to support a local bakery. read more

Service was good, ambiance fine. We picked up takeout. Their online ordering was having issues in that it would not let me checkout after entering my order. We were going there anyhow to pick up bread for leftover Thanksgiving sandwiches so we decided to order there. Soup of the day was tomato, sausage and lentil-it was excellent, very flavorful. Wish I had gotten more than a cup. It comes with a hefty sized piece of non toasted sourdough. Also excellent was the oatmeal raisin cookie, we also got chocolate chip but I have not tried them yet. Good chips (Hal's NY Kettle chips) & pickle spears for a side. I got the roast beef panini with their Boursin cheese. My husband got the tuna melt with smoked mozzarella, which he really enjoyed. Mine was ok, I believe there was just one and a half pieces of roast beef, plenty of cheese, a little red onion and red pepper. It desperately needed seasoning of some sort-especially the cheese, and it was very rich being Boursin. If the onions were pickled, or it had banana peppers, or some type of acidic relish it would have helped greatly. I did eat my pickle which helped a little. I saved most of it to fix it up at home. It was a large sandwich, bread-wise. More meat would have been nice but the price was pretty decent. Naturally, we had to come back to try their assortment of bread and to pick up more pastries (too many to choose from!). I came here seeking a croissant which they did not have. I got a blueberry scone instead and it was divine. It was moist and buttery with crisp edges. I had no idea scones could be this good. We liked this place so much, we came back twice during our 4 day stay in Portland. As soon as you approach the back of the building you can smell the delicious yeast smell of all the bread that's being made. The apple hand pie and cinnamon roll was delicious! What we liked about Big Sky was that things were not overwhelmingly sweet like a lot of bakeries now a days. The coffee they serve was delicious. They give you different milk options that a lot of bakeries don't. They milk alternatives are in a cooler on the other side of the bakery but they have them! The bakery is very hot inside, so it's a perfect place to grab and go or sit out front of the store. They have so many delicious items to try, good luck figuring out what you want when you visit! read more

My goodness. This place is incredible. We grabbed a coffee at Coveside, then had breakfast across the street where I devoured french toast made with bread from Big Sky - which is why we had to visit. I loved to see the variety of breads for sale, even English Muffin bread which I didn't know was a thing! We grabbed a loaf (later I would wish it were two!) and a cookie. The woman processing our payment was very nice, indulging me as I described my french toast experience with far too much excitement :) We've made a plan to come here at least twice a month, hoping the loaves freeze well, if so we'll make this our go-to bread spot. Cute little bakery/sandwich/coffee spot. We had gone to brunch across the street at the Bayou Kitchen and walked around the block before our long drive home. My husband wanted another coffee so we stopped into Big Sky. It smelled wonderful inside and we eyed a bunch of the breads they had for sale. We just ordered one coffee to go and the cashier offered us a small sample of one of the few items they had in a tiny case at the register. What a cute idea! I appreciated the clearly fresh veggies cut in large rounds rather than diced. Not a fan of the English muffins they use in the breakfast sandwiches and the wait for sandwiches is long. Blueberry cheese pocket was lacking in flavor and I didn't get past two bites of the sticky bun for the same reason. They are nice and the space is cute. We love Big Sky Bread Company! Why do we love it? Because of their baked goods. It's as simple as that! Their products trump all of the other things that "bother" me. Our favorites: Sugar cookies, both frosted and unfrosted. A MUST for the holiday season and a must for when you just need a locally baked treat. Old Fashioned white bread. It's great plain, as a sandwhich, as toast, simply delicious and perfect. Fruit bread. The apple blueberry bread. DENSE and delicious! I love to just snack on a sliver of the bread, but I also love a nice think slice with light plain cream cheese. Don't judge me :) Just try the bread. We have never eaten in the corner store, but there are plenty of specials always listed on the board and there are always customers enjoying a small meal and conversation at the window seats. Because we usually just run in and out, the things that "bother" me are things I am willing to overlook because this place has some of the best baked good in Maine. Those things are, parking and sometimes the "customer service" The good news about the staff not being too engaging, is that the line moves FAST - hence, i am willing to overlook this aspect. Big Sky is a great local spot that isn't what I would consider hipsterish even though it has all the pieces to be so. This is a local bakery in a repurposed firehouse and they kept one of the firemans pole, though it doesn't seem to be in use. They sell all sorts of bread, kneaded and baked in house, sweet treats, sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. The firetruck doors allow sunlight to flow in, showering the few tables in the seating area. They have a kids table where they have bread dough to address kids needs for tactileness and texture...and soothing to play with as an adult! I love coming here for their Friday challah bread, introduced to me by the SO, and love being able to try all their sweet treats they share on the giant cutting board next to check out. A beautiful space with great, simple food, I love this place as a very neutral and centrally located meeting spot. read more

It's factory bakery quality. Like it came frozen from a Shaw's distribution truck and heated up in the back of the store. Those awkward pale shiny dense baguettes? Muffins are dry like they don't use a fat of any type. Bread is dense and rubbery like the yeast was under-active and it didn't rise. Some great depression style product. Vibe is fine. I was torn between rating this spot four and five stars. They bill themselves as a bread company and in that I think they excel. There's all sorts of options to choose from and they're all wonderful. I've continued to come here for years if only for that. Beyond the bread, however, things can be a little more hit or miss. Their chocolate chip cookies aren't really a style I enjoy, the lunch sandwiches are often good but not great. Food is good, service is terrible. There are better spots in the area to check out. I waited 40 minutes for a sandwich (I was the only person in there!) and when I went to politely ask about my order they found that it had been sitting there for about 30 minutes getting cold. (I have heard from other pals that this is not an anomaly and has happened to them as well.) The kicker: absolutely no apology. Not even a little one. I then stated "I ordered this about 40 minutes ago to eat here." An uninvolved woman behind the counter yelled over: "Well, you can just eat it out of the tinfoil." (A truly surreal exchange. I simply replied "Yes.") I would advise whoever runs this place to train their staff to be attentive and polite and/or to hire those who have a natural inclination towards kindness. FIVE STARS for the AMAZING sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich I got the other day! But minus one for the unusually long wait and awkwardness of everything. While I love breakfast sandwiches, I hadn't found a place nearby where I could happily spend over $3 on one until now. The breads, the giant windows with the beautiful morning sun shining in, and the way that the food gets brought out to customers dining in were huge plusses; but the empty register as I stood there confused, the 10-minute wait for my food, and the strangely unhappy vibe I was getting from the people at the register definitely threw me off. As food was brought out to people, it seemed like this was only being done because it was a required part of the job description rather than a nice way to deliver a meal. I had read about the samples and I was excited to try them until I asked... and then was met with the most tepid reaction ever. Since the egg sandwich was SO GREAT, I'll assume that it was being super 100% freshly made to account for the time. I also get that there's probably a million other things to do behind the counter. But, I did get a cookie. Oatmeal raisin. Deliciously chewy? Yes, but overly sweet to the point I was turned off. I got there late-ish? Because everything on the shelves for baked sweets are basically empty which made me very sad. They had prepacked whoopie pies and brownies? Pass. I was given the option of waiting 15 minutes TO ORDER because, "they are very strict about the time policy" this is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I have ever encountered. If there was a regular customer stampede on Big Sky and it was nearly impossible to keep up with demand or if the equipment was to be totally interchanged to serve lunch vs breakfast I could understand this policy. The fact that this is mediocre menu offerings at best ie: salads and sandwiches and there is no wait to be had makes this policy irrelevant. Sorry, but with more than a dozen other sandwich/bakery options in the area I will spend my money elsewhere. Also, that goes for specialty orders. I can find baked goods and breads all over the city and I'm pretty sure they won't turn away a paying customer. I go here every chance I get, but mostly when having work done at Merlin's. The staff is always friendly and upbeat, and the food is always amazing. Coffee and a cinnamon roll with raisins and walnuts is the cure for almost anything, and the beautiful interior is a great place to read a book and pass the time. the five stars are for the best sticky bun I've ever had! Big Sky has two sites, one at the public market, and the one we ate at, where it looks like they do all of their baking. Really nice store, lots of variety, and a table for kids to play with real bread dough... what a cool invitation for kids to learn the joy of kneading! Really friendly service which explained all the options.. The choices for breakfast snacks are just about endless, I tried a sample of their cinnamon bun, and a cherry scone, and chose their sticky bun... It looks like just about any sticky bun, but the proportion of cinammon, gooey sugar, pecans, and butter in the batter was just right! It didn't need any more butter, didn't even need to be heated... it was just right! I'm still tasting the pleasant, decadent joy of morning sweetness, at the end of a great day food tasting! Can't wait to try the granola we bought, and go back tomorrow for another goody, this time with a cup of coffee! read more

Big Sky deserves six stars because their breads and bakery items are other worldly. Read the Yelp reviews and there are plenty. Honestly, what more can I add that hasn't already been said. What I love about this place is that you can sample their yummy cookies and scrumptious breads while enjoying a cup of coffee and reading The Portland Press Herald. The granola cookies come in bags and a mouth wateringly awsum. Every time I go back home to Maine I stop at Big Sky and often bring breads and cookies back to friends in The Lone Star State. I'm torn on how to review this because I love their bread; I usually have their English Muffin bread on hand either in my fridge or freezer. Yet, I've had their breakfast sandwich, which was really not all that great, in my opinion. Maybe the English muffin needed a better toasting, but my general feeling was that the bread was too thick for the contents, and the ham was very salty. ...And at the same time, the biggest reason I love coming here is because of the salty attitudes of the workers, and the fun people watching. It might be hard to understand my stance on this place, but the best I can say is that it's one of those places where there the redeeming qualities rise above the shortcomings. The women I've seen working here have a tough attitude/ and seem like they might want to kick my ass, but they make it entertaining to watch as men come in to buy loaves of bread, and I can read the disenchantment on their faces. There is a charm about the service here which is not traditional, but which I appreciate in my soul. Ironically, I don't think anyone here could truly hurt a fly. There was once a large spider on the floor, and after numerous employees freaked out, one woman went to pick it up with a piece of paper, and released it outside, gently. I was kind of a production, but hilarious. There are a lot of quirky things going on here (various signs and rules listed, for example), but in an odd way, that's what I like about it. read more
