I woke up this fine Sunday wanting some really good soul food. After searching the web, I called my compadres and asked if they wanted to tag along with me to this soul food restaurant in Inkster. I've heard mixed reviews so the foodie that I am I had to give it the good ole college try. Let's start with the mediocre: the young lady on the phone taking the orders does tend to rush through your order without comprehension. Also, the place is in a pretty sketchy neighborhood and doesn't seem very welcoming however.... The customer service was pretty good upon arrival. The good: the food was hot, and absolutely delicious. I ordered the smothered Turkey chops, Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, with a side of greens. Somebody put some love in this food and you can taste it. The food was not salty or over greasy with combinations of phenomenal flavors. I also like the fact that it wasn't super over priced.. kinda felt like I ripped them off. Southern cuisine at it's finest. I'm a fan, and I will return. read more

FIREEEEEEEE!!!!! The catfish could raise a deadman's blood pressure. But it was really good lol. They just need to take a little seasoning off the catfish and put it on the Mac and cheese. But overall, pretty damn delicious. Better than most places. Going back again for sure. read more

Absolutely delicious! First let me begin saying the small restaurant was quite clean and the tables were covered with nice cloth tablecloths. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. It was my first time there so I reviewed the menu. I ordered the grilled turkey chop dinner which comes with two sides, cornbread and dessert. I chose a side of greens (they're collard) and mac-n-cheese. In addition, I ordered cabbage. They give excellent portions with just the right amount of herbs and seasoning. It took about 15 minutes for the food to come out. Total came to about $23 and change. I can tell they really took their time marinating and preparing the food. The soul food and service here was great... You might have to wait a bit but it is worth it. I didn't see any heat lamps- that was nice. My meals were tasty, not overly salty and filling. The price was nice also. The lobby is small but cozy... Get used to it because it takes a bit of time for them to put the dinners together. This place was recommended by a friend. It's a small carry-out spot with not the usual carryout food. More of things you might get in a sit down spot. Lamb chops, charbroiled items, alfredo etc. I got the steak bites cajun style. They were very delicious with lots of flavor. Mixed with onions and mushroom on a bed of white rice. That was my favorite!!! Also got veggie platter. You can get it fried or grill. I got fried. It was good made fresh I like the fact it comes with onion rings, broccoli, zucchini, peppers. Nice variety. It came with a couple of different dipping sauces. I think just a ranch would've been ok. Overall I loved everything. It does have 2 small tables to eat at or wait for your food. Food was delicious! Catfish was cooked fresh and was crispy, it definitely could have used a little more seasoning in the breading but was still edible. This is old school soul food atmosphere. Welcoming ladies that are ready to deliver excellent customer service. Food is delicious, well seasoned and quality ingredients. I've been here several times, EVERY time I eat here I am so thankful for this place. There are a billion soul food spots around (Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Canton, Belleville, Romulus, Inkster and Wayne area) that just Suck- horrible service, cheap food, inconsistent culture. The seafood/shrimp macaroni and cheese!!!!! I had the pork chop dinner, my daughter had the turkey chops. The dinners were average soul food but the portions are nice. Flavorful greens and black eyed peas. We will definitely go back, nice to have them in the area. read more

Clayton's Kitchen definitely provides its consumers with a REAL down home soul food experience, I tried it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised... the customer service was excellent, my food was hot, fresh and flavorful! The only thing I was a little disappointed about is the fact that due to COVID-19, their menu is somewhat limited and I wasn't able to try the seafood Mac and Cheese but other then that, I have no complaints and I will be a returning customer! The service was great! The food was pretty good, just a little salty but still pretty good. The most delicious things were the banana pudding cake and the cornbread that comes with the meal. The Mac and cheese is good. The oxtails had too much fat and salt and the dressing was a little on the dry side but not terrible I promise. The prices have gone up too, the oxtail dinner is 28 dollars. Idk if that's comparable to other restaurants, just some FYI in case you stop by. read more

I had very high expectations for this place. I read many reviews before deciding to stop here after school one day. It was around 7:30, I didn't call ahead I just came in to order. The inside and very small, just a few tables and chairs. I decided to go with the catfish dinner with macaroni and cheese and yams. I also ordered some of the banana bread pudding. Everything totaled to $18.02 which is pretty expensive. I was told the wait would be about 15 minutes. I sat inside and waited and as I was watching in the back I saw the gentlemen scraping cold Mac and cheese for my order from a aluminum pan. My problem wasn't with the Mac and cheese being cold, it was that I could hear them speaking about how that batch was old and mine would be the last they would make from it. After another 10 minutes I got my order and went home to have a taste. The catfish was okay. It wasn't bad but I've had better. The yams were also sub-par. Definitely not one of the better ones I've tasted. The Mac and cheese was completely terrible. It tasted as if it was sitting inside of styrofoam box when it was reheated and it had a old and dry taste. The only thing I was extremely pleased with is the banana bread pudding. It was to die for. Well, here's my prognosis: The mashed potatoes and gravy were good, the greens (especially after I added my homemade peppersauce) was da bomb. Now, the meatloaf left something to be desired. It seemed as though they put too much bread (crumbs) or crackers in it. The meat was tight (and not in a good way); I mean I had to saw (vis-á-vis slice) my way thru it. I've had worse but I have most definitely had better! So now the choice is yours. You'll have to try the other main course meats on your own as I'm not a fan of eating meats off the bone. This establishment reminds of grandma's Sunday meals after church. Not only is the food amazingly delicious, the owner and staff are very nice and accommodating. There is little to no wait time and the still accept call in orders unlike other soul food restaurants. It has a loving family vibe. By the time I got my kids setup with their food and started to eat mine, he was finished with his plate! Of course he asked if he could have it the next day for dinner too. I just had my first dinner yesterday from this restaurant. It was great!!! I had the baked chicken, cabbage and mac & cheese. I would definitely recommend that if you live or are traveling in their area, try their food. I can't speak on their phone practices because I can believe that someone might be placed on hold since there was only one nice lady in the restaurant when I went in there. I went to Claytons as a recommendation, instead of the usual. Was somewhat disappointed . First, let me say that the service was very pleasant so this review is hard to write,but I must be truthful in what I experienced. I ordered Short Ribs and Salmon Dinners. I could smell no cooked food in the kitchen (first clue). The short ribs tasted precooked from the fridge. I took them home to cook down another 20 minutes so they would pull from the bones-hello!. The salmon and shrimp tasted thawed frozen but, the sauce over it was very good. The rice was good too. The Potatoes were boxed or half and half. Gravy Good. The Greens were good but not - I've tasted better. The cornbread was not fresh- seemed baked the day before. The Mac and Cheese was ok. I bought a piece of Sweet Potato Cheese Cake- It was pretty good. Bottom line, I paid too much for leftovers-not happy. If I decide to try Claytons again, I may try read more
