I have to agree with the reviewers who enjoyed this restaurant. My server was always on top of it (except when she forgot my lemonade, but then she had it right out to me in less than a minute after a gentle reminder). The food was tasty (I had the small fried catfish dinner, which was more food than I could eat), the lemonade tasted fresh-made, and the price was right. The slaw is the finely-chopped variety, which I like, and had a nice vinegar bite with its sweetness. The pinto beans were very nicely seasoned, and a dash or three of Tabasco made them a perfect complement to the deep-fried and corn-breaded fish filets scattered on top of french fries (so-so) and a couple of hushpuppies (which seemed like overkill). The cocktail sauce tasted odd, as did the tartar sauce, but there was nothing wrong with either -- I think it's just a flavor blend I'm not used to. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the mood for some Southern fried seafood. read more

Stopped here while in Tyler on business, searched for a seafood restaurant and this one has good overall ratings. The grilled fish tacos were excellent - highly recommend. Garlic mashed were tasty, pinto beans were solid. Service was excellent. Only drawback: the honey mustard salad dressing has an unannounced serious kick. I can handle plenty o' spice, so it was fine. If you don't do spicy, steer away from the honey mustard. Would definitely eat here again when in Tyler again. read more

Okay, this place is definitely growing on me. The first visit - the catfish - was sort of "meh". The service was friendly and reasonably efficient, but the food just didn't bowl me over, so to speak. True to my word, I went back. This time I had a cup of Jalapeno-Crawfish chowder, and it's to die for! Also had the grilled fish tacos (mega-yummy). Again, the service is friendly and efficient. I will definitely visit again before I go back home -- I've heard rumor the gumbo is good, and I want to try a few other items. I may also try the catfish again - see if it's really "meh" or if it's more "me". One question -- why no beer on tap??? I would really like a draft beer here. Also..if you have to have bottled only, I'd really like to see an option for Corona Light or Heineken Light. If I'm on the road drinking bottled beer, I prefer Corona or Heineken, but I'd also prefer light beer, so I can enjoy 2-3, instead of a single. I know those aren't the most popular light beers -- but I bet you'd sell enough to keep it around. Finally.... I would LOVE fried Okra. Okay, I'm not from the South. So when I'm here, I need my catfish, fried okra, and country-fried steak fix. Just love this place. The food is down home goodness. The decoration inside and out is beautiful. Then comes the food. Seafood steaks and burgers. We try it all. This time around I went with the Old Fashioned hamburger. Honestly one of the juiciest burgers I could ask for. Oh yeah, I started off with the World Famous Onion Rings, lawd hammercy, so good. This rustic southern restaurant is so warm feeling and family friendly. We ordered the queso with chips and the chips came out hot from being obviously freshly made. They, along with the queso, were delicious. The chips weren't too thick or thin. The waitstaff was so attentive and wonderful! We were never without anything we needed. I ordered the grilled shrimp and it came on a bed of rice with green beans and hush puppies. It was DELICIOUS. I had to take home a whole skewer because it was so filling. I went here for dinner on Friday night. No wait but it was starting to get crowded. We started with their "world famous onion rings." It was okay. Light and crispy batter served with ranch. On to the dinner.. I ordered the bowl of gumbo and a side salad. The gumbo is better than anything I could make but doesn't compare to gumbo in Louisiana. The salad was a side salad with all the toppings. Tomatoes, eggs, bacon bits, cheese, it was a steal for $2.95! My bf ordered the fried platter. He got catfish, oysters, shrimp and it came with fries, hushpuppies, rice and coleslaw. It also was ok. Overall, the food was decent. Our waitress, Victoria was awesome. Super sweet and checked on us several times. For dessert, I tried the banana pudding. It was decent but the bananas at the bottom were brown. I know, it's hard for it not to be.. Had SUCH a great time here! We went for my aunt's birthday and had a big party. Luckily it wasn't super busy and we got sat within 10 minutes, they had great happy hour specials and the food was amazing. I had the one fillet tilapia with rice and broccoli. Our last night in Tyler and Tex-Mexed out, we opted for some southern cooking. We arrived and were seated quickly. Our waitress took our drink and appetizer orders. We went with good old iced water and lemon, with a "small" order of onion rings. The onion rings arrived about ten minutes later on they were delicious. They were homemade, not frozen. Served with ranch sauce and or ketchup. We ordered our entrees. I went for southern fried oysters, fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, and smoky pinto beans with bacon. The wife ordered the grilled seafood platter. Entrees arrived about another 10-12 minutes. My oysters were plump juicy and full of flavor, and the fries were run of the mill but good. However, I really liked their coleslaw as it was not over sauced with dressing. And those beans with that smoky taste were out of sight good. The wife's grilled seafood was spectacular also. There were two nice sized catfish filets, and three shrimp brochettes wrapped with bacon. Hers also came with broccoli and green beans, which she said were great. Our waitress checked on us many times and even had them bring me extra oysters as she thought my plate may have been short a few, but I don't think so. Lots of oysters. Nice meal. read more

I've been going to the clear springs in Tyler on and off for over ten years, and have always loved it. Not now. A friend and I went there and sat in the bar area, it wasn't busy. After ten minutes a waitress who had walked past us 5 or 6 times finally came over and took our drink order. I ordered the rattler margarita, which for the first time ever in years was served with no ice. Then we waited another 35 minutes as the server walked back and forth past us. She never brought silverware or napkins and never took our order. Finally I asked for my ticket, paid and left. Likely for good. read more

Food was ok....catfish had little flavor,oysters were pretty good, beans very bland and hushpuppies tasted store bought frozen, grilled shrimp was flavorless and very small. Husband rates along with Long John Silvers.(except it wasn't fast) Owner or manager should be more involved with making sure customers are happy and food is good. We saw many good reviews and it was disappointing that it wasn't as good as expected, maybe it's the staff on that shift needing more training or supervisor support. Went back today and the catfish was the same, not good. Again, soon as I saw how dark the breading was I knew nothing had changed. Farm raised cat lacks favor anyway, but with all that breading I couldn't taste it hardly at all. Seafood and East Texas don't really go together but at Clear Springs it does. I found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to give it a try. As a native of South Louisiana and currently living in Houston, I am accustomed to good seafood. This place does not disappoint. The food is fabulous. I ordered a small portion of onion rings as an appetizer that was simply grand. Actually the small portion is larger than some mid or regular sized portions I've had at other places. We ordered the fried catfish plate which comes with Cole slaw, fries, hush puppies and beans. That's more than you can consume. I know because I took half my order to go. My wife had the little buddy which is a gracious portion of Fried Shrimp and Catfish along with the sides I had. The adult libations are great. The Rio Grand Tea is their spin on Long Island Iced Tea and they did a fantastic job. It is served in a jumbo sized glass which makes it more than enough. Our server gets a 10 out of 10 for the excellent service she offered. If you're in the Tyler area you would do well to stop in and chow down. Yes it was a lot of people but that shouldn't excuse the service Nobody checked in to see if I wanted to order or to check if I needed a refill. Being that I'm not a fan of seafood I just went with a burger. I've been in the service industry for twenty years. This is a well oiled machine. The servers are capable and attentive. The bar is very clean, and the tap beer is very well maintained. First time at Clear Springs. Atmosphere was pleasant, busy time but the service was quick & friendly. We started out with the Jalapeño Crawfish Chowder. Very delicious & fresh! It was just the right amount of spicy, not to hot for my husband's delicate palate. We shared the large catfish platter which came with enough sides to satisfy us both. The food was tasty. Fish fried perfectly. I can't say it was the best I ever had but it was decent. The coleslaw was very tasty. We topped off our meal with the peach cobbler which was different from a traditional cobbler. It was great, not too sweet so the ice cream was a great topping & the pecan sauce added a terrific twist! When in Tyler, check them out. My mom and I had salads (chicken club and fried crawfish) and both were huge, fresh and delicious. My husband and dad had fried catfish and shrimp/crawfish combos which they enjoyed, and my sister had the grilled salmon with cilantro cream sauce, which was the highlight of our experience.
