UPDATE: Since Mr. Ochoa has decided to lie in his response. I have decided to release some receipts. Please see my roommate's review for proof. ----- TLDR: BUSINESS OWNER IS A CROOK who thinks it is acceptable to TAKE FULL PAYMENT AND NOT FINISH THE JOB. Admits he owes me money but refuses to return it. We are now headed for court. First, I'd like to say it never feels good to leave a bad review on a small company. It feels worse however, to get taken advantage of. On 7/10/20 (yes you read that right, this began half a year ago) I hired John Ochoa for re-landscaping our front lawn. He skips most tasks and the work he attempts he did not do properly. Please see the task pic for more details. UNPROFESSIONALISM: - Never arrived on time. - I requested St. Augustine sod, as our lawn has zero grass. He offers seed instead. I agree (as he is the professional) only to find out you cannot plant a lawn with this type of seed. It's patchwork only. - DOES NOT SPRAY WEED KILLER prior to planting. The grass cannot outcompete the weeds. - Planted daisies on the slope. Daisies cannot outcompete the weeds. No daisies grow. - Lavenders are planted in mulch and become unhealthy. After a quick Google I discover it should not be planted in mulch as it causes root rot. - Requested pink and yellow Lantanas flowers. He planted red and yellow instead. - Miscalculated the amount of rocks needed. He said I needed 15 bags. We actually needed 110 bags. This changed the estimate from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Mr. Ochoa claims he has been in business for 13 years. How can he so grossly misquote the amount of money it would take to complete this project and then cut corners. If things were more expensive than he initially thought that is something we could have discussed. He requested full payment without the work being finished (I paid him out of good faith, and we are in a pandemic. It's nice to be nice. This is my mistake). Before payment Mr. Ochoa responded quickly, but as soon as I paid him, the excuses began, the lies accelerated & he became increasingly unresponsive. Since July 2020, I have made multiple attempts to schedule with him. He continually gave different excuses to not come (i.e. he doesn't feel well, back injury, etc). Yet he seems healthy enough to complete jobs for other customers during this time period. I tried to be understanding and waited over a month as he kept pushing it back. I even offered alternate solutions of having his workers complete the job instead. I was under a deadline for this project to be completed, as required by the city or we would be fined. Mr. Ochoa knows this but goes radio silent. I have made multiple attempts to resolve this situation with him peacefully. There is no communication until I am finally forced to seek an attorney. There are two sides to every story but even Mr. Ochoa has admitted to my attorney that he owes me money & left the job unfinished. He agreed to settle mid Nov but still has not paid me. He has asked for three extensions and missed them all. It is now Jan and it's clear we will have to go to court. I will seek a FULL refund on services, every fee that is legally allowed to me: interest on money owed, attorney fees, & the cost of my salary for any days I take off to go to court. Based on the mountain of evidence I have and Mr. Ochoa's own admissions, I am confident I will win. My attorney and I will file soon. I will update this post with the court results. read more

Dear John, you are shameless. Did you forget that we have photographic evidence of texts & checks to back up our statements? My roommate and I hired you to re-landscape our front yard. We did not just hire you to "till the dirt". 1. Gardening 101, thou shalt spray weed-killer & wait two weeks before beginning any work. Why did you not spray any weed-killer John? Why did you provide seeds instead of the sod we asked for? 2. You claim I have no gardener. *Yelpers, please see texts below from my gardener. You asked us to place him on hold for a few weeks, so the grass could grow in. 3. You set our sprinklers to water the lawn at 10m intervals, six times a day (1hr total). Although our water bill skyrocketed & so did the weeds...the grass seeds didn't make it. Nor did the daisies. I'm as shocked as you are John. Shocked. 4. In Aug 2020, you claimed a back injury of a slipped disk, which takes months to heal. We never asked you for a full refund, but simply for the incomplete work. *Texts below as evidence. Please try to refrain from lying when you respond to me. Judges do frown upon that in court. Thanks! I received 3 quotes to replace some grass with new Sod and John came in priced competitively. For some reason he reminds me of Jeremy Renner, nevertheless, he is pretty chill and down to earth so that along with the price I chose him. When the time came to do the job they got it down with a quickness. I had about 1000 Sq ft tilled and replaced in 2 days with new sprinklers. There was a particular part around a tree that had a bunch of twists and turns but they made the grass fit nicely and it's beautiful. We have a tree that blooms every year and causes horrible allergy symptoms throughout the family. I came on to yelp to get a few quotes to have it trimmed a lot smaller. Clear View had great reviews but were not the least expensive. I asked if they would price match, and they did! They came out within 3 days and it literally took them 30 minutes to trim the tree, clean up all the mess and haul it away! The slope was a bit steep and not the easiest to access, not to mention I had an apartment building behind me that wasn't the most helpful or accommodating. John and his team seem like they are good guys but they are just not skilled or versed in turf removal projects. I had turf removed and replaced with rocks and weed barrier but something wasn't done properly as we have weeds and grass growing out of control within a few months. I am forced to spend a gallon of weed killer monthly and still not able to keep up with the weed and grasses popping up. I have seen others in the neighborhood have more success with this project so it definitely seems to be a quality issue. read more

John and his team has been awesome. It's Christmas Eve eve the 23rd and it's windy. Our dead tree broke a limb and landed in our neighbor's backyard. We had our suspicions that the greens been dead for awhile so this wasn't too much of a surprised. We needed someone quick to deal with what fell into our neighbor's yard and the rest of the tree in our yard which is at risk of falling into our roof. I left a message and had my call returned within 10min. Awesome response time. John was able to make it over the same day to check things out and for a quote. He was actually on his way to another job but was nice enough to make a pit stop. We agreed on a very reasonable price and he helped us clean out the huge tree branch from our neighbor's yard that same day and then came back the next day to finish the job. Sent an email sunday to get a free quote for tree trimming. The owner emailed back pretty fast same day and we Made an appointment for the upcoming monday and confirmed details via email. Our monday appointment time came, (i had to leave work early to be home for the free quote), and they are a no show. I wasnt sent an email or communicated with in any way to let me know they wouldnt be coming. I had to email them later that night to let them know they missed our appointment. The response given was "hello, i am so sorry". No explanation, offer to reschedule, or anything else. So in terms of professionalism, not off to a great start at all. We needed to prep our backyard after removing all the grass so we can turn it into a drought tolerant landscape. After getting quotes from 6 companies, John was the best estimate we got. But he was also easy to talk to and wanted to accomplish what we wanted. Some people wanted to add things but we simply needed to remove weeds, spray them to kill them, remove yards of dirt, and grade the dirt so it's leveled and sloping as needed.
