To most Polish Americans, National Pączki Day means making a ton of these delicious sweets and binge-eating them. It is celebrated the Thursday in the week before Ash Wednesday, whose tradition is unique since it dates back to at least the Middle Ages, and is the perfect excuse to eat the famous and delicious Polish pastry. Pączki, pronounced "poonch-key," are Polish deep-fried donuts that are filled with some sweet filling such as jam, custard, lemon curd, or chocolate. They are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing, glaze, or dried orange zest. Located on Jewell Street in Garfield, we've been coming here to Kohout Bakery for a couple of years. Greeted by the friendly staff, my partner and I were lucky to have the whole establishment to ourselves. Like a step back in time, this small bakery sells freshly made bread, danishes, cookies, strudel, and some deli meats. Patrons have raved about the perfect balance of flavors, particularly noting the distinction between glazed and powdered jelly varieties. We picked out a couple of their donuts, whose price was very reasonable and cash only. A quaint, clean, friendly bakery. Many selections of Polish sweets, breads, pierogies, meats and more. Very reasonably priced. There are plenty of good items to enjoy! My favorite -and I order ahead - is their Polish rice cake :) The cookies are gone before a day goes by! Oh, and try their macaroni salad. Yummy! Kohout's Bakery & Deli has been in business since 1949. They specialize in Eastern European baked goods, although other treats are available. This family run business headed today by Charles Kohout, Jr. offers apricot & other crumb cakes, poppy seed cake, freshly made breads and an assortment of paczhi/donuts, prune, raspberry, jelly, custard and rose, all freshly baked. I really liked the rose paczki. Crusciki are a favorite among their clientele. From the deli counter you can order an assortment of sandwiches, pierogi and kielbasa. Bought hard rolls, rye bread and poppyseed strudel (kolachi) for Easter. All items were very good. The poppyseed strudel could have been a little moister but the flavor was good. Next time going to try their prune (lekvar) strudel and apricot kolachi cookies. read more

I absolutely love the poppyseed streudel. And I special order the Christmas Czech bread called hoska every December. The hoska reminds me of the way my Aunt Anna used to make it. It just would not feel like Christmas without waking up to a slice of hoska on a Christmas morning. And their poppysedd pastry is great too. read more

When you walk into the door at Kohout you are transported into the past. The smells and the decorations are so lovely and inviting. The service is exceptional. I called ahead with a terrible description of the apricot crumb cake that my family loves to see if they had any left. The staff was very helpful in identifying what I was looking for (although I already forget the proper name) and even went above and beyond to add a "happy birthday" toothpick when I mentioned it was for my moms birthday. Well it's been a very long grip since I last wrote a review so lets start here and get going again. First off this hole in the wall bakery is a huge sleeper, delicious doughnuts, cookies and cakes and is very inexpensive. I forget how much the donuts are but a few months back I bought a cake here and it was like 6 or 7 bucks for a whole yellow cake with chocolate frosting, it was very good. A HIDDEN JEWEL ON JEWEL STREET. I grew up loving everything about this bakery. There isn't one thing I can say I don't like. Since the older generation has passed on now, this is the only bakery that comes even close to my great aunt's wonderful eastern european baked goods. The poppy seed rolls, hot cross buns during Lent, authentic crispy round poppy seed rolls, rye bread, cream cheese cookies... I could go on and on. LOVE this bakery. I don't go anywhere else. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BAKERY!! It's like eating pastries like my (oma) grandma would make. Cream doughnuts are amazing also the jelly crumb cake but my favorite is the rice cake. Try the babka and the rye bread also the CHRUSCIKI or in english angel wings. And the cream cheese cookies with the fruit filling are to die for.
