An absolute home run spot. Clemente has a lot to offer, but I come for the sandwiches. Best mozzarella in town, and their bread is insanely good too. I got a prosciutto de Parma sandwich with their famous mozzarella. Still thinking about this sandwich it was that good. Had to try the St Joseph pastry. Bakeries are magical places; where toasty scents of freshly crisped loaves waft in the morning breeze like a butterfly on thermals. It was once called "Central Bakery" back when I remember it; an obscure destination for bread cognoscenti and resellers alike. Many would wait on line here at 5am for the first warm semolina loaves to hit the racks -- and breathe deeply while anticipating that first crunchy bite. My bread never made it home intact. I pinched and snagged a hunk of this or a piece of that and left a mangled pile of paper bags, bread and crumbs behind. Known today as Clemente's, this industrial sized bread baking operation located in an obscure industrial section of South Hackensack has gone upscale -- sporting salumeria and pizzeria appendages, a full dining area and humongous Mortadella's hanging from the ceiling. But the quality of the bread, focaccia and cookies remains as it once was -- the star of the show -- and my main reason for shopping here. I especially like their plum tomato focaccia -- which is resold by many Italian supermarkets and deli's in the region, including such places as Corrado's and A&N. The trick is to get the focaccia fresh here -- rather than several days old (which is usually the case if you buy from the resellers). Come early for the bread, and certainly stay for the condiments. So I was feeling an Italian deli sandwich and this place popped up. Came in at 9:30am and ordered the Clemente Special with hot peppers and sharp provolone. The guy working the sandwich counter was friendly enough. Everything was sliced fresh and the sandwich was built completely from scratch. Their house made bread is great, extra crusty, with just enough of a soft inside. Meats and cheeses complemented each other well. Problem with this place, the women running the register are not as friendly as the sandwich guy. I wanted to try their chocolate or cheese croissant, but she said they were out. But at least they have a seating section, unlike Andrea Salumeria in JC. I opted to try a chocolate chip cookie. They have two kinds, one in a jar, one in a case. I asked her what the difference was, and she said the ones in the jar last forever. Which made me wonder how long they'd been in that jar. I'm not Italian but living here all of my life I've sort of developed a certain swag that may qualify as being Italian (probably not - my wife reminds me all the time of my inferiority, that is, not being Italian). Otherwise, the nice grey-haired paisano behind the counter has every right to kick your a** back to "pennsyl-tucky" where you came from. Got it? Good. You're there because of word of mouth or Yelp so you're already part of their extended family so who needs the niceties? Just get on with it and make the purchase already. For the sweet tooth, the cannolis are good (nothing beat Rispoli's though) but here the "sweet calzones" are terrific. It is more than a deli because they have hot food, pastries, groceries, different types of breads including focaccia, and specialty dishes. They also do catering and special bread orders. This is a nice deli with plenty of tables to dine in and enjoy your favorite Italian treats. This is a family-owned business in which you can see the entire family working together. The rest of the staff has been working there for many years. I lived in the area years ago and this was my favorite stop every day. Now I must to stop there every time I visit New Jersey. Prices are very reasonable, so I laugh when I see people complaining about "high prices." They would have a hard time ordering a sandwich in Miami, which usually starts at $10.95 for a regular panini. I miss Clemente's. The ladies at the counter are friendly and knowledgeable. In my experience, they can also be fun. It is nice to see a family so united (althought I can't imagine working with my parents or relatives all day long). It probably isn't easy. Nor is it easy to keep up with such a big and elaborated business, but these ladies are there everyday from very early in the morning to make sure all the delicious food is well prepared and all the merchandise is in order. Clemente's is a big store with counters of food and a small market. It is a one-stop place where you can get everything you need - from a hot lunch, to all the ingredients you need to make an authentic Italian home cooked meal. The ladies can give you recommendations on almost everything because they are very proud of their products. They also make amazing cappuccinos. The bread and focaccia are delightful and very authentic to the Puglia region of Italy, specifically Bari. They offer an extensive selection of delicious oven-baked Barese breads and foccacias. Pizzas are made from scratch. Taralli and pastries are also very good especially when they make seasonal treats like zeppoles. Pastas and other hot dishes including risotto, veal, chicken, and beef, change daily, and Fridays they usually prepare seafood. They also include one of their delicious bread rolls with almost every dish. In the deli section, they have the guys making delicious subs. One of my favorites is the Clemente special with ham, salami, pepperoni and fresh mozzarella in a crunchy hero. You can add some delicious roasted peppers and sundries tomatoes for an extra charge. Did I mention that they make fresh mozzarella daily. It is to die for. They also do catering, which I have ordered in numerous times and it has always been well prepared and on time. I personally love the fact that almost everyone speaks Italian. It gives it that extra "je ne sais quoi" to this lovely establishment. :) It can be hard to find this bakery because it is in an industrial area, but if you are in Bergen County and love Italian food you should do yourself a favor and put it on your GPS. want legit ? this place is legit. Old school so maybe every snowflake out there might not appreciate what a gem this is. The sandwiches are amazing. They are a bakery so the bread is your typical jersey expected great italian... but even fresher. You know the bread, sesame seeds, almost tooth cracking hard on the out, soft as a pillow on the inside... and it can hold sauce. Just a basic mozz and ham (or any given meat) is heaven. It is all fresh and true. This is not a cookie cutter place, it is the way I grew up thinking and experiencing a family place. Perfect? No.. Perfect for what it is and represents ? Yes. Don't do the picture thing, the instagram thing, the whatever... just go get a sandwich, something basic. The basic here is a base line for the quality... and you want to taste that. Was I scouring the underbelly of industrial South Hackensack on the hunt for a bakery just because they have the same name as my father? (Yup.) You open the doors (hopefully you have better luck with which door to use) and... it's a little slice of Paradiso. The sights and smells are intoxicating and I already knew my credit card would be getting a workout by the time we were done in here. From breads to pastas to salads to sausage to sandwiches to free samples (my kids seemed to hang around that table an awfully long time!) to drinks... they have all sorts of delights. (Including Nutella's "B'ready" - something I never saw before but the rest of my family loved and devoured as soon as we got home.) Their Clemente sandwich was delicious. Not sure if it could knock out the "#1 Italian" at Cappelluti's Deli in Kearny or Cosmo's special in Hackensack as my favorite... but it's a serious contender. I love this place. I've been coming here for 8 years now and I stop in a few times per month. My review of the place is honestly 5 stars, but hopefully this gets the attention of management because I'm really tired of ordering a sandwich and having the people behind the counter make up a price based on how they're feeling at that moment. You have a digital menu on tv screens. If your pricing increases / decreases for certain items / sandwiches then adjust it accordingly. I've paid 6 different prices for the same sandwich over the past 3 months, but today was just ridiculous. I ordered a full sized domestic prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich, which is $9.50 on your tv menu right in front of the counter, and I added roasted peppers. The guy hands me my sandwich and I walk around the store thinking I may buy something else, but then I look at the sticker and see $14 for my sandwich. So I'm thinking I was just charged $4.50 to add roasted peppers to my sandwich. I go back and say I think you guys made a mistake on the pricing. Explained what I ordered and the response was "O yeah that menu isn't accurate, pricing went up". I left it alone, paid for my sandwich, and l left. This happens all the time here. Either it's false advertising or your employees are given authorization to charge whatever they'd like. Either way it's not right. If you read this review and plan on stopping here for a bite to eat, TAKE MY ADVICE......... I'd recommend asking upfront what your sandwich / item is going to cost before you place the order so there's no confusion over what you're about to pay. This place is awesome. I walk in and I can feel the Italian. I like that they had samples set up everywhere, like an Italian costco. I got eh clemente special, everything was fresh, and I loved the mutz. The bread was crunchy on the outside and still soft on the inside. Their stuffed breads and baked goods are very good. I tried a espresso cheesecake, a nutella stuffed bread, and a stuffed bread with olive. It was all outrageous. They also sell some grocery items, as well as frozen pizza, ravioli, and sauces. My family and I have been going here for a long time now. You would never expect this great place to be situated in the heart of an industrial/warehouse district, but it is and it's very welcoming inside. The name implies something that it is not. This is a full-on Italian mini market with several specialty areas. Their bread is amazing, but the olive or meat breads are particularly amazing. Their sandwiches are also excellent. Absolutely amazing! My boss asked me to get a lunch order catered for the office at the very last minute & a lot of places turned me down because it was less than 24 hours notice. My husband told me to try Clemente's. I called them at 7am asking about a lunch order for noon & they said absolutely no problem & worked with me in detail about my order. When it came to picking it up, everything was packaged safely & one of the workers actually walked with me to my car to help me travel back to the office with the order. We got 2 trays of sandwiches/wraps, a garden salad with dressing & they threw it cookies for no charge at all. My boss & his boss were totally impressed with the quality of the food. So much so that she said she might come visit again very soon just so we can get the same food ordered!! Clemente's has our office's business. I went to Clemente's today for the first time. There wasn't much of a pastry selection. They had decent looking cookie selection. I got some canolli. They were fresh but I found it a little sweet. My mom liked it but she like anything Italian lol. The salads looked suspect. I don't understand why they use carrots in mushroom salad and seafood salad. That's really turned me off. The stuffed peppers with cheese and prosciutto looked old. They were very faded In color and looked old. I got some mozzarella ball salad. That was the only one that looked good. It was ok nothing great. A little bland but ok I guess. Nothing compared to Latona's in Garfield. Latona's everything looks and tastes better than the next. I died and went to heaven when I had there hero today. I had there absolutely mouthwatering homemade mozzarella on a crispy yet buttery sub with chicken cutlet and some artichokes with sun dried tomatoes and roasted red peppers. I swear this sandwich came from heaven and dropped into my life. This was the best hero I had yet. Highly recommend. Had the tuna fish my niece ate up in two seconds. I wasn't sure if the location, as it seems to be in the middle of a commercial/industrial area, but so many tellers couldn't be wrong... so decided to go in. So glad i did. This was confirmed as soon as I walked in, and heard the staff speaking to each other in Italian. It's one of those things... I don't know the language... but I can tell when someone is speaking it. Their sausage and egg sandwich is just amazing. But it's nothing compared to their focaccia. Topped with crushed tomatoes... I could eat one every day. I have also had some of their pasta dishes, all of them being good. We did enjoy their eggplant rollitini. Their sandwiches are also great.... the Clemente special (variation on an Italian sandwich) is great. Sausage bread is ok... as is the pepperoni bread. They even have pizza, which I may have to try one day. The place is also more of a deli than a bakery... and they sell a lot of nice pastas that you can take home to cook. Finally, their cappuccino... delicious... comes with some cinnamon, and they use illy coffee. You can't go wrong. read more

If it wasn't for Yelp I would have never of found this place and I live within 2 miles of it. It is in the industrial area of south Hackensack so even as my navigation was bringing me to it I thought there was no way it was in the right spot. Even then I though it must be in some old building that looks run down and will be impossible to find. WOW, I was wrong. This place jumps out at you when you get close to it. the inside was very well lit and very clean. The make all there own bread and pastries, along with pizza and any Italian deli product you need. They have a huge selection of fresh meats and traditional Italian salads. If you work in this area it would be ideal for a lunch stop. My wife kept telling me to get the prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich and I am glad I did. The bread is made on the premises so its really fresh. The mozzarella is really really thick, its more like chunks of cheese. It was fantastic. There is a good size table area with a few TVs if you decide to eat there. read more

Beware! Clemente Bakery will charge you a service fee for paying with American Express credit card. There was no sign notification when I made my charge (perhaps they will put out a sign after this review) and only realized it when the amount I signed for was different than the amount the clerk told me was my order total. They list the credit card usage fee on the receipt as "cash discount" but if you add up the items and tax on the receipt you will see that it's not a discount but a fee. Very sleazy. A big thank you to Jarrett's review for introducing me to Central Bakery. I feel like I have discovered some covert Italian deli that requires a secret handshake just to gain entrance to! It's just that good!! My husband is a prosciutto connoisseur and I have been known to travel quite a distance to purchase fresh mozzarella. Well, it looks like I will be driving to an industrial area in South Hackensack for all future purchases of these two items. 1. Prosciutto de Parma.......best I have ever had. A gorgeous rosy meat that was thinly sliced. It had the perfect silken texture and a complex, faintly salty flavor that just dissolves into richness on the tongue. Enjoyed this paired with sweet cantalope for one of the best appetizers ever created. 2. Mozzarella: not dry or rubbery but richest & creamiest homemade mozzarella I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Together with a Beefsteak tomato from my garden....the ultimate taste sensation. Central bakery-Clemente Bakery has a huge deli counter, home made semolina bread for their sandwiches. They also have a large dry goods section (imported Italian pastas, cookies, etc). A freezer case contained homemade tomato sauces. I will definitely be back to try out more of their items. Oh, and right next to me, ordereing a grilled chicken on semolina with roasted peppers/fresh mozzarella/balsamic vinegar.....South Hackensack Police Officer. WOW... Did not expect to get such a great sandwich. Freshest mozzarella I've ever tasted and the bread was fantastic. Kinda makes me mad to think I have eaten sandwiches in my life where the bread sucked. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with mozzarella, roasted red peppers, and balsamic. So good. I also saw these yummy looking peppers stuffed with bread crumbs, anchovies, and cheese so I asked him to toss a few of them into a container. GLAD I did that because they ROCK.
