Everything is fresh, I had a mozzarella and turkey sandwich on a fresh baguette along with a huge cookie for dessert. Very authentic place, the owner which I am assuming is the gentle man who made my sandwich was very kind and gave me a piece of fresh mozzarella to try before making my sandwich and the lady at the front bakery case was very attentive also. Next time you are in Hackensack, I recommend plugging the address into your GPS and winding your way through the industrial South Hackensack streets to this magical place. This review focuses on sandwiches, specifically the quintessential Italian sandwich--Prosciutto and fresh Mozzarella. I find that this sandwich is a great barometer for the quality of the rest of the food. It also happens to be one of my favorite sandwiches. Clemente's is easily the best Italian deli in Eastern Bergen County. Originally, I was a big fan of Bartolomeo's when it was in Palisades Park. When they moved to Englewood their prices went up and the quality slowly went down. Then I became a die hard Jerry's man. Jerry's quality has decreased over the past few years and their prices have gone up as well. Clemente's is the real deal. Their prices are high, but worth every cent for the quality. Their bread has the perfect crunch to fluff ratio. It's substantial enough to hold a monster sandwhich, but also tender enough that it easily rips with a normal bite. Their homemade Mozzarella is creamy and it melts in your mouth. They know it and they pile it on. The prosciutto is top quality. Unlike some places, both the domestic and imported fly off the shelf here, so it's never dry or tough. Add a drizzle of premium evoo and just a bit of balsamic and you have a lot of happy customers. I also highly recommend just about anything else with mozzarella-- the chicken cutlet hero with mozzarella, the Italian combo with mozzarella, the meatball parmigiano hero. read more

Was told about this place, and tried it last week. Old school Italian bakery. Located a bit off the beaten path, in a mostly industrial area, absolutely worth seeking out! The "store" area has breads, meat counter, olive bar items, desserts, dried and fresh foods. We tried the delicious fresh made artichoke focaccia, and black olive bread. The cheesecake mini cannoli horn, and rainbow cookies were to die for. So good! We also got subs for lunch, in the deli area. The Clemente Special was delicious! Hidden away in the industrial section of South Hackensack is the best salumaria, lattaria and bakery in all of NJ. The best house made mozzarella and buratta. So much better than anything in Hoboken. All of its prepared food is beyond belief great. The seating area is nice; its not a restaurant. It gets very busy at lunch for good reason; its great. I generally don't like ricotta cheesecake, however, theirs is sublime. They have samples of their baked goods to feast upon while you choose. The owners and their children who run the place speak Italian! It is a retail outlet of a renowned commercial baker for authentic Italian bread, etc. It is better than Dom's in Hoboken. Their frozen pizza fills my freezer. They serve it fresh too at the retail store. You have to try their grilled octopus. I'm not a relative. I'm a native New Yorker transplanted to NJ whose father was a restaurant owner. You can take my word on this one. read more

I think it is a bit overrated and here's why. The cold cuts, mozz, cheeses, sun dried tomatoes, and roasted red peppers are delicious! The bread it self, however, is too tough for me and ruins the sandwich. Many of my Italian friends disagree with me. Maybe its just a cultural thing, but it is definitely too tough for me. The hot food there is rarely very good and often over priced. That is not a cultural thing either because I have been to Italy and love Italian food in general. This is consistently not very good. What is indisputable is that it is a great little Italian store full of Italian people. They have good imported products and an authentic feel to the place. I think this is why it gets extra points from Italians. As for them being rude, I can understand why some people think that. It is just that some of them are consistently discontent while others consistently extremely nice. I wouldn;t make a blanket statement, depends on who you talk to. I walked in after work one day and he got nasty with me cause he had no bread left and said he worked 8hrs already. So did I. I was hungry. I have it a second chance. I would have given this place negative five stars but they are lucky that prompt doesn't exist. First of all, the attendants are rude as hell. The woman obviously hates her job and makes sure you know it. If you hate it there, quit damn it! Second, math/pricing is obviously not a strong suit of these workers or the establishment. Figure this one out...6.50 for a regular grilled chicken chicken sandwich. Fair enough. Then 1.50 for grilled red peppers. Ok no problem. Another 1.50 for fresh mozz...fine. But when you charge 1.50 for oil and balsamic vinegar...you should be SHUT DOWN! Who the hell charges for oil and vinegar, a dressing for God's sake! Now the 6.50 sandwich that turned into an 11.50 (w/ tax)...tasted like stale 6 day old bread with decent chicken in it. Avoid this place at all cost! I ordered a pan of Lasagna from Clemente Bakery for a party I was having in my home.To say I was disappointed in the dish would be an understatement. The Lasagna had practically no cheese on it and it was made with absolutely no ricotta cheese whatsoever all noodles and a little meat. I was so embarrassed with all my guess at how awful this pan of so called Lasagna was that I wanted to hide.When I called the following day I was treated disrespectfully and given a lecture on how there Lasagna comes from a region in Italy that doesn't put Ricotta cheese. She forgot to mention sauce and very little meat. What a disgrace,I will never give these money hungry people a penny of my hard earn money ever again. My suggestion to anyone that reads this to try a half a dozen other locations near by where they actually know how to cook. read more

This rating reflects on my willingness to return, not the quality of their food. Up until yesterday i would have recommended this place to anyone, now i will send them elsewhere, unless they enjoy being spoken to in a rude manner, and people completely unwilling to provide for a customer. In fairness, I did not realize they closed so early on sundays, but arrived 20 minutes prior to closing. After waiting for 15 minutes without a single word in our direction, we were finally acknowledged and our order was taken. My fiance ordered his sandwich and was told- no lettuce and tomato. That was ok for him, but due to certain dietary needs, I was only ordering turkey with lettuce and tomato. The lack of availability of lettuce and tomato make it pointless. So, I politely declined giving my order. The gentleman suggested several ingredients i could use instead (roasted peppers, sundried tomatoes), but i informed him i wasn't able to eat those, to which he responded, "well, then next time, get up earlier." Forget the fact that he could have walked 20 feet into the back and cut up a tomato, the response was completely unnecessary. I was already starving and disappointed. Not only did he lose MY business for the day, but when someone is so unwilling to serve the customer, it makes me not want to give them my business in the future. So, my entire office in hackensack will no longer get lunch from there. I won't tell you their food is bad, i will just tell you that they are simply unwilling to do what's right for YOU, the customer, which is a lousy way to do business. read more

Central Bakery is tucked in on a side street in the industrial section of South Hackensack. During lunchtime its frequented by workers from nearby businesses and gets quite busy. The have a good assortment of cold cuts and italian cheeses. Their sandwiches, a bit pricey, ooze freshness. From the fresh baked bread right down to the meat and cheese....they are awesome. I usually go for a small prosciutto with fresh muzz. They also have daily hot food specials which are great. I also love their home made pizza...very tasty....you can taste the freshness and quality. They sell them frozen too, so you can bring one home. They have great fresh made breads and some other italian baked goods like taralli and breadsticks. I used to frequent Central Bakery in Union City and loved the quality.That closed a few years back and I was happy that I discovered that the same owners had another store.
