Cleveland Violins rehaired my violin bow beautifully and at a reasonable price. The work was completed ahead of schedule.

I cannot recommend Cleveland Violins enough. If I could give them 10/5 stars I totally would! I got my bass from Cleveland Violins around 2008, when I was in high school. She's been everywhere with me - the most recent move being to my new house this past summer. I've been in apartments the past 9 years, and now finally have plenty of space for a good set up for her. Problem is, our house is 150 years old, cold, and drafty. One night in February, my fiancé and I heard a loud noise upstairs, and didn't think much of it, since the house is usually pretty creaky...until the next morning when I realized what had happened. There was now a 6 inch crack down the front of my bass. I PANICKED - I had no idea what to do, or if it would be safe for me to move her without furthering the crack. So I reached out to Cleveland Violins, sent them a photo, and they told me they could fix it relatively inexpensively. THANK GOD. So I took her in. Two days later they called me to tell me that the damage was much more extensive than they initially thought. That they'd have to take the top off, and address a few other issues I hadn't noticed. That this type of fix would take a few weeks, and would typically cost $2,000. My heart SANK because I love my bass but in no way could afford to spend that much on a repair, I'd have to sell her. So I'm on the phone with CV, totally ready to bawl my eyes out, and then they decided to make me cry, but for a totally different reason - they told me they would consider this a warranty repair, at no cost to me, because, despite the time that had elapsed since I bought her, they stand by their product. I got my bass back this weekend, and she looks beautiful. I offered to pay CV something, but they wouldn't hear of it. So I left, crying again, and 100% a loyal lifetime customer. I cannot thank them enough and HIGHLY recommend them to anyone looking for a place to purchase or repair a stringed instrument. They do high quality work, and their customer service and passion for what they do is beyond excellent. I'm a very happy customer! read more

I amble along Lothringerstrasse in Vienna, Austria, looking for a violin maker, when I stumble on a clean, open shop on the corner. Inside, the white walls are neatly lined with violins, violas, celli, and double basses; yet, there is still enough room for three tiny blonde cherubs to frolic about, never coming close to destroying any of the fine, stringed instrument. EXCEPT! I'm on Mayfield. In The Cleve, and I'm in a beautiful music shop, devoted to the entire string section. Whoa. There's a young guy manning the counter, a woman upstairs setting out violas, and in the front window, a dude is building an instrument from scratch. By hand. With just the light from the April sun. On Mayfield. In The Cleve. I wander in, looking, plucking, utterly astounded. What a find. I wait for the guy at the counter to finish with his customer, then start peppering him with questions. How long has this place been here? What's the story with all the beautiful instruments? Should I go with a German or a French bow? Do these lederhosen make my ass look big? On and on I drone, waiting for him to throw up his hands in surrender. He keeps answering, politely, with a touch of wit, and I'm just melting. THIS is the place, folks. All I really need is a double bass case, so he heads into the dark recesses of the basement and returns with TWO used cases. "The new padded ones are two hundred, the new unpadded are a hundred. You can have whichever one of these suits you for sixty." I coulda kissed him, but I'm pretty sure at least one of us is heterosexual. They offer new and rental, accessories, sheet music and a great heaping helping of civilized shop-keeping. Cue the tympani! Prices range from modest to ohmylivinggodmywifewillkillme. They have another shop in Medina, by appointment only, so I'll toss a review on that one soon. (This used to be Goronok String Instruments, at a prior location.) Deduct one star for understaffing and a bit of a mess in the showroom, but hey. Just how many great string places are there within an hour's drive? Counting this one, uh... One. read more

Every time we need help, like new strings, an adjustment, a bigger violin size, a new bow, there are now questions asked. I left my violin at Cleveland Violins for almost 3 weeks so they had time to do some touch ups on the corners and edges, cleaning, etc. Well they cleaned it (which doesn't take very long at all). But they didn't do the touch ups - even though it was on the work order. They told me that if I wanted the touch ups done I should have left my violin in the shop for a few weeks - which I did do! Just frustrating. Very unprofessional way of handling a mistake - blaming the customer. The other thing that frustrates me about Cleveland Violins is that they never bother to call the customer when they finish a job (bow rehair, cleaning, etc). Instead in my 4-5 experiences I have always had to call them to check on the status - only to find out they completed the work several days earlier. read more

As a parent of a new orchestra student, the choices of places to rent an instrument are overwhelming. As the vendors clamored for our business with flashy offers and deals, the staff from Cleveland Violins, who attended our school orientation event (which is 45 minutes away from the store), waited patiently for people to finish listening to all the talk and come over to listen to their instruments. ANYONE with an ear can hear the difference in sound between their instruments and the standard school rental offerings. Even though I know nothing about strings, they were kind, gentle, and ENDLESSLY patient as we asked questions, asked to play different instruments, and eventually kept them a bit over their time. They are very flexible, knowledgeable, caring, and supportive as our little journey into the unknown of instrument rental and possibly beyond evolves. Their prices compare to other quality stores and their service is well worth the occasional trip to the store. They are willing to come to the school, but I just cannot ask for one more thing after all they have done. A great place for seasoned musicians and beginners alike. read more

Cleveland Violins sucks just like every establishment in this hell-hole of a city. I rented a cello for my daughter, at the beginning of the school year, and less than a month into my 3 month rental contract, I was offered a job out of state. I contacted Cleveland Violins and explained the situation to them and they said "no problem," and to bring the cello back in and they would prorate my refund. I turned the cello in, expecting my card to be re-swiped and my refund to show up on my card, and they said the would send a refund check to my forwarding address. I gave them my sister's address, waited about 3 weeks with no check! I called them back and explained that my sister never received the check, and they said it normally takes 4-6 weeks for this type of transaction. I was mad, but I updated my mailing address to my now new and permanent address, thinking I would get my refund by the end of October. NOPE! No refund check. I called again about 10 days ago, and they said they would get it to me as soon as possible. I'm still waiting. My suggestion to anyone that is suckered into renting an instrument with them is DON'T! I'm going to continue to talk $h!t about them, because they have my money, and I don't have their Effin' Cello, and I'm pissed about it because they were quick to swipe my card, but they are dragging their @$$e$ with getting my money back to me. The rental policies and prices, along with a discount if you pay the year up front make them the value choice, even changing vendors halfway through our rental career. I have been doing business with Cleveland Violin for 20 years. It was formerly known as Goronok Violins at another location. They have always done the finest quality work, in a timely manner and at a fair price. I purchased several cellos from them and also cellos and violas for my daughters. We have upgraded many times and also had repairs and maintenance performed. They always had my repair done as quickly as possible and to accommodate my needs. I highly recommend this shop! read more
