Just to be clear, west coast is the best coast. But I fell in love with this beautiful resort and their breathtaking views! We booked the oceanfront ledges room and were pleasantly surprised with a corner unit that had expansive ocean views. Each floor of the hotel has a well-stocked coffee and tea station, along with some fruit so it's a must stop in the mornings. Staff is extremely attentive and courteous, housekeeping greeted us by name in the hallways. They have 3 pools on the property: a family pool, an adults-only pool, and an indoor pool. Unless it's raining, I recommend avoiding the indoor pool because it smells too chlorinated and musty in there. Location is in between Ogunquit and Portsmouth, so The Cliff House served as the perfect homebase for 5 nights as we visited family and enjoyed seafood along the coast. read more

This is one of my favorite places. It's absolutely the most beautiful location. However their customer service is terrible. I reached out to their staff and because of how poorly communication was, reached out to managers who never answered. Left so many messages with no call backs. I wanted to host an event there but due to that reason, have now since looked elsewhere. I then tried to contact their spa for months prior to our stay and never got a call back from them either. Thankfully I was able to figure things out for myself online, but got charged incorrectly after our visit and called to resolve - again, no answer and no call back. Still have been over charged. Just am looking to get a call back. Unlikely. But fingers crossed. Good luck if you run into any customer service issues. read more

We came here a few years ago and the staff and vibe was a lot more friendly and chill. The place is still stunningly beautiful the views are magnificent, the design is great, the location is incredible. Since our last visit they added a lot of new rooms and kept the amenities the same size so it's a fight to get a good seat at the pool kinda thing. Also the staff is a little more "attitudinal" I guess since they are over burdened a bit. Not as friendly as we remember it. Kids aren't allowed in the main pool anymore and the kids pool is freezing no heat. (Not nice and they didn't tell us that when we booked it). Used to be pet friendly but not anymore. Oh well, nothing stays the same forever. read more

Very pretty hotel, I give it that. The noise proofing is awful. We were unfortunate to be given a double room near the elevators where you could hear so much foot traffic and noise; total pandemonium. On top of it all, there was a wedding with a very rowdy group of guests who were playing baseball in the hallway, until 2am. The hotel did send the security out and people politely quieted down once confronted. Commingling guests of the hotel and rowdy wedding parties is a bad decision (consider giving wedding parties separate wings of the hotel). On top of all this, the hotel isn't able to move us from our noisy room and helplessly listening to our complaints after a sleepless night. Staying here now. While the setting is beautiful, there are significant issues with the pool- a major draw of this hotel, and the food. The pools- both indoor and outdoor are very cloudy, which means there is a chemical imbalance whereby the chlorine etc is not sufficient enough to keep the pool clean. I have brought this to the attention of both someone on the "recreation" team, that oversees the pools as well as the front desk. Not that I should have to, as a resort this size clearly has people responsible for tending the pool daily, those people have seen the state of these pools and do nothing. Why? It is dangerous for the people who swim in it, the hotel guests, and just looks gross! Second the food, there are two restaurants: one is solely indoor dining. The menu is creative but lacks any simple options you would want when staying here for a week and not wanting a complicated meal each night. The second is a lobster bar, where we ordered double and single lobster rolls, both came out looking pretty much the same. The food at Nubbs was passable but felt very pre-made. Ie- when you ask for a dressing or sauce on the side, it often isnt possible because things have been mixed already. And again, where are the simple staples for people staying for more than a day who want some easy healthier options? Also the staff at Nubbs has not been trained well if at all. At the Nubbs bar, a glass of wine was extremely small and disappointing. Bottom line- this is a beautiful setting with great potential but needs more careful management over some important details! Beautiful views, well kept grounds and super friendly staff. One of the valets saw us wheeling our luggage to our car and first offered to carry it for us and then when we replied we like to walk he offered to drive a golf cart with us to our car. Restaurants were very good, particularly the breakfast. Like many places, the service was a little slow due to shortage of staff and a few items on the menu were not available. We also waited about 10-15 minutes at the bar for a drink as there were only 2 bartenders. Breakfast was a bit pricey and my 1.5 pound lobster for dinner one night was the most expensive lobster I had on an 8 day trip of Maine. Also, $5 coffee seems high. Rooms were nicely furnished but a bit small given the price tag. The pool area was ok, nothing special. Nice lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Gym had two Peloton bikes. We stayed 3 full days and no available spa service when we checked in. read more

I wouldn't recommend this resort to families with young children. I paid way too much money to not have the same experience as adults who get to enjoy an adults only pool that's at least 10 degrees warmer (with jets that have hot water coming out of them) than the designated family pool or indoor pool. Called the front desk three times to have a "pool engineer" take a look and turn up the heat, and the excuse I was getting is that the sun heats up the adult pool. If that's the case, turn down the temperature in that pool and increase the temp in the other pools. When a guest staying for three nights with two rooms calls to request that the pool be heated up a little more, at least humor them and take a look. No one came down to the indoor pool to compare the temperature as told. This really soured the experience for me. My 10-year old couldn't even enjoy herself. Incredibly disappointing! read more

This place is beautiful. It's clean and sprawling and beautiful. The decor is coastal/nautical without being kitschy. The rooms are a good size and the linens are clean and comfy. The view. Oh my gosh the view. It's AMAZING. You look right over the ocean and over these beautiful rocky cliffs. There is a walk-out to the cliffs if you want to do some trekking over the rocky area. In addition to the beautiful scenery, there is also a bar and a pool/hot tub outdoors that overlook the ocean. There is also a pool/hot tub indoors as well for the cooler weather. On each floor, there are stations that have taps with various types of water (including sparkling water)! So fun! It also had Keurig machines with teas and coffees as well as local milk! It was great that each floor had these stations so you didn't have to adventure very far to get beverages! As a total aside, the indoor pool appears to be very handicap accessible. The pool has a ramp and the hot tub has a hoyer lift for those who need more assistance getting in and out of the hot/tub. Very cool. read more

Stopped at the Cliff House for lunch on the way to Portland, Maine. The views here are spectacular! The decor inside the hotel was superb, and overall the food was fantastic! We got the clam chowder and the mussels, both dishes were 5/5. The restaurant manager was also great, he let us grab lunch by the windows (in the lunch area), although lunch wasn't being served as of 15-20 minutes. The waitress didn't look thrilled-but the food made up for it. Overall a great experience at the Cliff House, I would recommend the coastline views and great food! read more

Pros: if you like ocean views, an oceanfront room or even just the free ones you get are unparalled. This is the idyllic ocean view of Maine you would imagine and I haven't seen a better one. It's a resort with a good amount of the amenities you'd expect. It's southern Maine so pretty close to places like Boston or even New York (just over 4 hours) relative to most of Maine. Even in the winter if it snows the roads are cleared quickly (it's a great place to watch a coastal storm). Short drive to Kennebunkport and Portland and to local lobster roll legend Bob's Clam Hut. Cons: rooms and food are very expensive in the summer - you could get an overwater hut in Bora Bora for about the same price as an oceanfront room. No beach connected to resort - if you need one it's only a short drive to the nearest. But for your perfect postcard/Instagram Maine ocean picture, you can't do much better. read more

We visited the Cliff House this past weekend, and it's an amazing resort. The staff - to a person, was helpful, friendly, and eager to please. The buildings are super clean, and there are so many nice touches: the history hall, the free coffee and tea kiosks on our hall (Ledges), the artwork, a movie theater (didn't get to check it out), walking on the shore rocks - and tons of activities! It's a great family getaway, period. My rating is 4.5 stars, and the only reason it's not a full 5 is, the fairly expensive, but weak, cocktails. Not knocking a resort's need to profit and prosper, but the cocktails, while tasty, were heavy on ice, light on pour. Given the "strict no-outside alcohol policy", I was reminded of movie theater snacks, if you get my drift. Maybe I'm just cheaper than most that frequent this amazing place - it won't deter us coming back! :) read more

My wife and I have stayed here a few times now. Until now I thought it was among the best hotels I've stayed at. But this time it is clear that things are in need of some significant repair. Room air conditioners are VERY noisy. Worse, our room had a badly leaking shower. They scheduled a fix at 10 am, but it wasn't fixed until 4:30 pm--we couldn't use the room for most of a day. This place is expensive and they didn't offer so much as a free drink ticket. They have also closed off one entrance to the pool area, which means that many guests have to walk all the way around the hotel to access the pool. It just seems awkward and unnecessary, given the expense to guests. The restaurant is good, but not great. Ate there twice and both times our wine came well after our main courses. Ordered a chicken dish that was WAY over brined and seemed as though it had been prepared earlier and reheated. So I want to love Cliff House (the views are amazing) but I don't think I'll be back any time soon. read more

DO NOT BOOK HERE! For what you pay, you get nothing! The hotel staff gives you incorrect information. They tell you the pool opens up at 9am and you can't reserve the chairs prior, but meanwhile all chairs are occupied prior to 7am. We planned our whole day at the resort with restaurant reservations, but ended up aggravating ourselves dealing with the hotel staff. People occupy chairs by leaving towels for several hours, while others keep waiting. There is no fair system. The next day we went up to the tiller restaurant to order breakfast and the woman goes, we are completely back ordered and cannot take your order. We then called room service and they had the same story. This is all at 9am. Then we ended up going to the coffee shop to grab something to eat, there too, they were all sold out of food. They expected us to drive outside the resort to get food. I am so disappointed with our experience and expected more out of their service, especially for what you pay a night. This review is regarding their event "management". I found this property and instantly wanted to book my wedding ceremony. Sadly I was not able to do so. Over a 4 month span, I've been in contact with over 7 employees, each with a different empty promise. I was told dates were available and then suddenly they were not. I was offered certain pricing and then it changed or that package was no longer available. I was promised returned phone calls and emails which never came - when it comes to communication they are seriously lacking. No one answers their phone and you'll have to email repeatedly cc'ing anyone you can to get an answer. I attempted to schedule a walk through which finally required me to show up on site and wait until someone would meet with me. The red flag list goes on and on with this group. I would not recommend working with this location for a wedding. I ate at the restaurant while on site. The beer list was out of date and we had to re-order 4 times to get something that was available. The food we ordered was also no longer available and required us to once again pick something else. The server was kind and apologetic, but for the cost it should be a better experience. The property is absolutely gorgeous, it takes your breath away when you walk in the front door. I truly hope they can get it together to make the entire experience a good one. read more

We were here for 1 week in the 2 bedroom oceanfront suite in ledges. They did not have the full 7 days available for our suite so we had to move to a 1 bedroom oceanfront for the last two days. On our second to last day my husband had gone out to reserve chairs out by the pool along with umbrellas and to our surprise when we arrived our umbrellas were gone. The young male worker at the pool indicated that they had taken our umbrellas and offered them to another the guest (coincidentally the couple next to us) because we were gone too long, mind you because we were changing rooms. We have stayed at many hotels around the world and never has pool service been this poor and careless. We only had 2 days at the hotel and it was ruined by not having an umbrella with it being so hot. They didn't offer any apologies and luckily my husband found chairs and an umbrella at the other pool. read more

You are not allowed in the beautiful main pool (that you see on the website) with the sweeping ocean views. You HAVE to go to the small, overcrowded kids pool. This hotel is beautiful, that's about the only nice thing I could say about it. We booked our wedding through the Cliff House because we had stayed there before for a night and loved it. Trying to plan a wedding was painful. They passed us around to about 7 different people, so much that I didn't know who I was talking to anymore. My family flew in from all over the country, we were told they needed to pay for their rooms within a week of us telling them about it. We were also told , basically threatened, that if they all didn't call in by Sunday that we would be stuck with the cost and our family could pay us. When my family called in they were told they could only have a certain type of bed and no doubles. I had to call the manager and apologize to my family. Setting up the dinner was a different type of awful. There was so much wrong that it's hard to summarize but here's one example: We offered chicken ($80 a plate) and steak ($98), the person I talked to said that we needed to pay for the higher priced item for all regardless of what people ordered. Even though I had the totals for them weeks ahead of time. Everyone in my family says they were treated rudely and nickel and dimed the whole way through. When we all arrived, there wasn't ONE person that knew what was going on regarding our event. We basically showed up to the room with name cards to put on empty tables an hour before. They didn't even put tablecloths down because they said we "already put names on the tables" There was also no one to help our party navigate the labyrinth that is this hotel, my wife was panicked the entire time. Stay for a weekend , trust me when I say, never book an event or wedding. read more

This place is amazing! It was my first time there but it was a great experience. The resort is huge with plenty of amenities for all. I heard there was a complete remodel done within the past few years and having never seen it before, it is quite a stunning facility. The staff we interacted with were all super friendly. Having gone at the end of November, the pools were closed but the hot tub was great and open till 11 pm. Our room was clean and furnished very well. Comfy bed. Great view of the ocean from our room and honestly everywhere. Large tv. Bathroom was spacious. And everything is green. No plastic cups, recycle bins with the trash, environmentally friendly soaps. There is even a coffee nook outside our room in the hall for the coffee aficionados. My girlfriend and I had dinner, hot tub, then a massage at the spa the next morning and use of the gym afterwards. I do have a few complaints. 1. Our dinner at The Tiller was good but the menu is super small and pricy. An expanded menu would be a great thing. 2. The coffee shop is only accessible from outside. So with the snow storm we were getting his morning, you're forced to walk outside to go there. Access from inside would be more ideal. 3. For such an upscale place, the towels are not soft and comfortable. 4. There is a "lobster shack" restaurant that is more casual with games and all but it is only open till 8 pm. I would think that of the 2 onsite restaurants, this is the one that would stay open later. I can tell you with certainty that we will return again as it is a great place to go when you need to get not so far away from home but still experience the ocean views with friends and family! We didn't stay at Cliff House, only dined there at The Terrace restaurant. What a horrible experience that was. I had reservations. They seated us upon arrival. The view was terrific, but the service staff were extremely slow and often times we observed them standing around and chatting with one another rather than actually delivering food or checks to tables. I ordered the wagyu carpaccio. What a joke. It was one small thin round of shaved deli quality beef covered with...mushrooms?! You're not supposed to put mushrooms in a carpaccio salad. It was more of a sautéed mushroom salad with only one tiny little thin circle of shaved beef. Didn't appear to be marbled like wagyu, either, which made me suspect they're really ripping people off. My husband and I also ordered an $85 seafood tier. What we received was a two-tiered contraption with two containers of grocery store quality seafood salad mixture on the top tier, and the bottom tier had 6 oysters and 6 shrimp swimming in cold water...definitely not presented on crushed ice, as would be expected. The shrimp was below even Costco standards; flavorless and room temperature. The oysters were "just okay". All of that for $85?! This place was a horrible ripoff. We once ate at their dining room and that was wonderful. But they're really missing the mark with The Terrace. We won't ever eat there again, that's for sure. read more

We've been going to the Cliff House for years. The wait for the renovations was worth it! The views have always been exquisite but the facility matches it now. Decor is rustic chic and nautical--perfect for Maine. Arrival: very easy and welcoming The room: we stayed on the 5th floor and it was clean, beautifully decorated. The beds were ultra luscious and comfortable. Large flat screen TV w multiple channel options. The pool and grounds: beautifully landscaped. The jacuzzi was slightly warm at best. Really need to make that warmer. The gym: wasn't open due to renovations but should be open in a week. The front desk removed the fee for pool and gym facilities from our bill. Beautiful location. This is one of my all time favorite resorts! With it being newly updated in a nautical theme, it's hard not to love it. It's right on the cliff, very clean, but what I love is the friendly staff. From the bellmen to the front desk and the check in process to all the restaurants and the bar tenders..everyone looks like they truly enjoy their job. It's a short drive from Boston and in a quaint town with fun Maine tourist shopping to delicious restaurants. My boyfriend and I continually choose this as a weekend getaway! read more

Truly cannot understand how anyone could rate their stay at Cliff House with anything other than 5 stars. My mom and I traveled to Maine from NYC for an end of summer weeklong getaway, and I can honestly say that our 2 night stay here was a top highlight of our entire trip (we went to Bar Harbor, Ogunquit, and Portland) and I will 10000% be coming back! Here is what you can expect during your stay: Food: I've seen some bad reviews for The Tiller Restaurant on here, and also unsure as to why. Everything from the cliffside views to the food was stellar. We began our experience here during brunch. I ordered the short rib and fried oyster eggs Benedict with chipotle hollandaise which was absolutely delicious and filling (I'm huge on brunch and this was comparable to a NYC brunch). The Bloody Mary was also yummy! For dinner that night we did not make reservations as we had originally planned to eat dinner in Ogunquit, however we literally could not peel ourselves away from this place. The Tiller Restaurant was booked for the night however they allowed us to do takeaway and sit at a table nearby the restaurant which felt very cozy. We ordered the Maine mussels which were hands down one of the best dishes of our entire trip to Maine! They had a bacon-y taste to them which was so tasty. The game meatballs were also great. We ate here the next night as well, and loved the scallops. I will say that the cheese board was so meager that we couldn't help but speak up (which I HATE to do but we love to make our own charcuterie at home and this portion did not fit the price). Our server Rick was so understanding and took care of refunding us immediately. The sea salt caramel ice cream sandwich is also a MUST. The Spa: A must do. While my massage was very relaxing, one of my favorite parts of the spa experience was the "sanctuary" where you could sit in your spa robes, drink Prosecco, and look out onto the ocean views. Pictures don't do it justice but this view was unreal. My mom also really loved her masseuse, Caitlin! The sauna was relaxing but the steam room was way too hot, so we stayed in there for .5 seconds and jumped out. The Pool: A great way to meet new people and soak up the sun! I loved laying on the chairs by the cliffside area rather than the pool, but we did meet some really friendly people by sitting at the pool. Rooms: Fluffy beds, fleece robes, amazing smelling shampoo. Need I say more. The balcony was a nice, quiet place to lounge in our robes drinking the coffee that was included and reading our books. Staff: Each and every person we came into contact with was incredibly friendly and helpful. Drew from the concierge is probably the sweetest person I've ever met, and was such a nice representation of the place upon check-in! He gave us great suggestions for brunch/dinner in town (The Greenery Cafe/Crooked Pine), and was someone we felt we could come to for anything. When we changed our minds 10x a day about whether we wanted a taxi to go into town or to stay at the hotel for dinner (we stayed at the hotel), Shahlar and Shirin at the concierge were incredibly accommodating to our changing (and probably annoying) needs. Special shoutouts to Nathan, Jana, and Rick at The Tiller Restaurant who provided impeccable service throughout our stay and made us feel so special. I can't stress enough just how friendly each person was! *I have no relation to anyone who works here, I just really loved the staff and my experience here. **I used some credit card miles for this stay as it is pricey. This place was BEAUTIFUL!! I was traveling for business and my room was ready two hours before check in which was nice. Check in was quick and the girl was very nice. I did get a tad lost trying to find my room but an adorable girl from the kitchen saw I was confused and walked me all the way over to the next building to show me which elevator to take. That was so nice of her, as it was quite a hike! They could definitely use more sine-age since the place is massive and it's easy to get lost. My room was absolutely gorgeous, overlooking the cliff. Everything was clean and there was an entire coffee/tea bar right down the hallway. It was stocked with all sorts of coffee, tea, fresh cream, milk and even some fruit. I did have an early dinner at Dubb's. The prices were outrageous (5.00 for a bottle of water) and the lobster roll was dry and underwhelming. The outside pool was not open yet and they were busy doing some sort of renovation but I can only imagine how gorgeous it will be when they are done. Loved our stay here. Breathtaking views. Upgrade to the ocean view if you can, it's amazing to wake up to the sound of waves against the rocks, cool breeze, just lovely! The extras really make this place special. Coffee/water station on every floor. Turn down service with chocolate and different postcard every night. Wild blueberry seed packet keepsake. Excellent housekeeping. We had a small issue with our duvet and it was fixed immediately with a handwritten apology card and gift. We didn't eat at any of the restaurants, however we were here for a catered breakfast event. Nice options, but leaves something to be desired. read more

Three stars for the view . . . it's spectacular. And the Spa treatment was wonderful. Otherwise profoundly disappointed in the level of service. When the rate for a room is as high as it is here - the level of service should meet the price of the room. I've traveled a lot and been in greater and lessor rooms and treated significantly better. No one greeted me when I pulled in. The four folks at the front desk never looked up and welcomed me until I walked up to one and said hello. And I was the only one there. I admit, I expected as so many hotels in this price point do - a glass of champagne upon arrival ... or something welcoming. Alas, this was not to be. I asked what the difference was between ocean view and water view - and the gal shrugged and said the ocean view rooms were built into the cliff but water view and ocean view both had ocean views. Wonder why I spent additional money for ocean view? I wondered if it was because I was a solo traveler? Dismissed? No information was given about the hotel ... the pool ... the Spa, etc. When I got to my room - and the room, by the way is just ok with nice linens. One would expect - again for the price, some amenity ... at least a bottle of water. Nothing. I called and asked about water and was told there was a station in the middle of the floor and to refill the water bottle in the room. Took a minute to find and was wet and looked as if it had just been drank from. I wasn't sure of the cleanliness- so I poured a plastic cup of water and brought it to my room and poured in a wine glass. I had to ask about the Trolley if there was a pick up time - then was handed the brochure and told it was a buck each way only to find out later the hotel gave vouchers to guests. No directions given like where is the pool? The Spa? Etc. When I left, I discovered I could have had marshmallows by the firepit or yoga in the morning by the pool, but alas - none of this was shared with me. This is a destination hotel. A winner of some travel award 2017. Reviews here say the view is great and the service is lousy. I think I would have enjoyed this much more had the Staff been forthcoming and generous with their time. Each time I spoke with someone at the front desk, I felt like I was taking up their time. What a great getaway! Booked last minute, joined Destination Delivers and received a free upgrade and late check out. The room was spacious and clean with modern amenities. The view was breath taking! The bed is comfortable as are the linens, towels, and provided bath robes. Check in was easy and extremely pleasant staff greeted us and were observed throughout the resort. The on site restaurant provided a fair selection and the price point was a little high but overall worth it when you factored in the view. Cocktails were a bit pricey (32.00 for 2 including modest tip)) Valet service available fir parking but ample self parking was close by as well. We will definitely be returning here, as it is our new favorite in Ogunquit. read more

Excellent views. New renovated room but POOR service. Stayed in room 58x on Oct 15th The room is nice and modern. But windows are so dirty and hazy it took away from the view. Shower did not drain. Had to call front desk twice. Took over 30 minutes to send someone up. I had to clear the drain my self Front desk said reservations not require for Tiller restaurant. Tried to walk in and wait over 1 hours. The property is nice. But the service is poor. Staff is poorly trained. With all the poor interactions it put me in a foul mood which ruined the tail end of my trip. read more

Fabulous place to stay. I don't know why it's listed as a 3 star hotel because it's definitely a luxury top of the line resort style hotel. The hotel sits literally on the edge of a cliff with beautiful views. The hotel is clean with excellent customer service. The hotel has multiple restaurants with great drinks. They have a family pool, adult pool and inside pool all heated. The rooms have great views. We upgraded to a king with a view of the coast. The bed is so comfortable and sheets are soft and clean. The room floors have complimentary beverage station to include sparking water, coffee and tea. We also enjoyed the spa which is one of the best I've experienced. read more
