We came here last night and I 100% recommend coming for the Christmas lights. Over 3 million lights here and its absolutely beautiful. It gets pretty busy on weekends I hear but the Tuesday we went wasnt bad at all. If you have kids they'll love it. Theres a huge miniature train track and village in the middle and everything is lit with lights and moving parts. I cant imagine how much time went into everything. You can also see Santa working in his workshop and theres a nice sized gift shop as well. Food was pretty good, I got the chili and I'd definitely have another bowl. It was served with an excellent piece of cornbread too. The people were extremely friendly as well. Definitely recommend if you need something fun for the family read more

For years I've always wanted to visit Clifton Mill, especially during Christmas. The Historic Clifton Mill is one of the largest powered grist mills still operating and their holiday light show is spectacular! There is a synchronized lights and music show that takes place every 30 minutes so if you don't get a good spot, just hang out for the next one! Be sure to look out for Santa as he climbs the chimney and be sure to stop in the store to grab a snack (the pretzel is delicious and the cider is yummy!) read more

This place has to be viewed in totality. It is a fun interesting location in this gorgeous old mill. The people are pleasant. We have only been for breakfasts. They are adequate. I've had better and yet the quality of the good basic dishes is 100% fine. We always enjoy the experience. It is not destination food. It is definitely a destination experience. The Clifton Mill has a lot to offer. The food is pretty good and the view and surroundings are beautiful. That said, the service isn't great. Sometimes servers are rude, sometimes orders are wrong, sometimes both things happen to you. The pancakes are tasty and massive, which is nice, but sometimes they don't get cooked all the way through in the middle. There is typically a very long wait, which makes this inconvenient when you drive from any distance, as there's no other option anywhere close. The Clifton Mill could be a lot better than it is, but it's very popular, so it doesn't really need to be. Which is a shame. I don't think it would take too much to make this a wonderful dining experience. read more

We had fun here! The servers were really sweet. It was like if Cracker Barrel were good. I had a fat boy omelette with corned beef hash in it and it ruled. The pancake was great and big. The place is a visual treat, and I love sitting by a window and looking out over the stream and the mill run. We've been here often on weekend mornings for breakfast, and have always had a significant wait. However the atmosphere made it worthwhile. The last time we went - and it will be the last time - we waited over an hour to be seated, then another hour and a half for our breakfast. The waitress explained that the building is old and the kitchen is upstairs. They have to ferry the food down to the dining level. Fine. I'm sure there must be ways to fix that situation, but ferrying food from one level to another should not take an hour and a half. Maybe from Urbana to Clifton Mill, but not from upstairs. Beautiful place, great atmosphere. That's the two stars, right there. read more

I don't really like writing bad reviews. It's much easier to heap praise than to give criticism, even when warranted and (if heeded) potentially beneficial. But the Clifton Mill is popular enough that I don't think my thoughts will harm the business, and there is definitely room for improvement. On each of our visits, we've had a fairly lengthy wait, the most recent being a 45 minute wait even late in the afternoon. So this place is certainly popular. That popularity is also readily apparent from the number of cars parked along the streets in town. (There is no parking lot.) This isn't a complaint, just a fact of which you may wish to be aware should you choose to visit. My compliant comes mainly as a result of the food. Their signature item is the massive pancakes, ostensibly made from home-ground flours. They're big. But...not great. On our recent visit, every pancake we received was fairly bland and somewhat gummy. The presence of blueberries was visible, but the taste was missing. And on past occasions, their savory items were passible but not outstanding. Certainly not enough to justify the lengthy wait time. They'd do well to abandon the size, which seems gimmicky, and focus on taste. read more

Date and I arrived 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. 10-top, several smaller parties were ahead of us; took awhile to be seated. While waiting, overheard server loudly complaining about her table to another server. Perused items for sale in the "country gift shop" area. Among other oddities, sold "Larvets" seasoned grub worms and other edible insects from the candy rack. Not an appetizing visual just before dinner. After 35-minute wait, we were seated at corner table overlooking mill wheel. Would have been nice, except vent was blowing strong cold air directly down on us. There were many open tables in the dining area - none cleared. Copious dust and cobwebs in the windows. My silverware wasn't wrapped; my date's was. Our menus didn't match. Mine was water-stained, listed different items - clearly older. Curiously, one can order breakfast all day, but cannot order from the lunch menu during dinner hours on weekends. Beer? Only Bud, Bud Light, or Sam Adams. Wine? "Cabernet, Pinot Grigio, White Zinfandel." No label / year. Below that, "Ask about our house wines!" Weren't greeted for a full 15 minutes. When waitress finally came over, she didn't apologize for the wait. The server became frustrated with my date when she asked, as directed by the menu to do, about the house wines. Waitress literally pointed at each of the wine types in turn ("We have this one, and this one, and this one.") Couldn't pronounce the names? When my companion asked about the other, "house" wines seemingly indicated by the menu, waitress indignantly said those WERE the house wines. My partner settled for "cabernet." The waitress immediately asked to take our food order. When we mentioned our menus didn't match, rolled her eyes again and said, "It's been a busy day. It gets to be fall around here and people think it's the holidays." When we finally got the menu situation straightened out, my date ordered the chicken tenders (which the waitress assured us were "hand-breaded" at this mill-restaurant that purports to grind its own flour). I ordered a grilled fish dish off the dinner menu. It said it came with mashed potatoes, tossed salad and "choice of seasonal vegetables or fresh fruit." I asked for the vegetables. My waitress rebuked me: "It comes with that. You don't need to ask for it." The menu clearly stated I had a choice between vegetable or fruit. Alrighty then. The waitress had a hard time listing the salad dressings we could choose. My companion asked for bleu cheese dressing. The waitress said, "I can make it." Should've been an ominous sign, but we let it pass because we're fairly easy-going. Our drinks didn't arrive for another 10 minutes. My date's "cabernet" was communion wine. Sickly sweet. Concord grapes. Our salads didn't arrive for another 10 minutes after that. The croutons on our salads were strangely soggy. The "bleu cheese" dressing was ranch, bleu cheese crumbles mixed in. Toward the end of my salad, I found a hair. Naturally didn't finish it. When our entrees arrived, my grilled fish dinner with mashed potatoes and vegetables had mysteriously morphed into a breaded fish sandwich and fries (the aforementioned veggies never materialized) - the same fish sandwich which btw had been listed on the lunch menu one supposedly couldn't order from at that hour. I let it go, because at this point I was just hungry and wanted the meal to be over. My partner said her chicken tenders were "ok." I think she said this only because she sensed my complete embarrassment. Both our sides of fries were cold and stale. The fried fish on my sandwich was lukewarm and had a strange, gelatinous texture. It didn't taste bad, per se. In fact, it didn't taste like anything at all - I could have been eating some kind of weird, breaded Soylent tofu, for all I knew. Again, I didn't finish. 2 minutes after our food was delivered (begging the question of what took so long between her previous, infrequent apparations?) our waitress sidled up to the table and asked if everything "tasted good." Not wanting to engage her in a dialogue we knew she didn't want, we both nodded yes. She immediately dropped our check and left us with, "Have a good night." No offer to refill our waters or to bring us other drinks. No asking if we cared for dessert or anything else. No friendly banter or even a, "Thanks for coming in." She never returned to the table. We paid at the cash register in the front. $35 for all that. Avoid at all costs. read more

Clifton Mill is a great example of vintage Americana attraction and destination that we need more of in this nation, especially in Ohio. It is visually stunning, soothing by the River, and extremely photogenic. However, it's truly mind boggling why there is only ONE restaurant, with waits up to an hour for a table. Why isn't there a cafe or restaurant across the River with views of the Mill? This would be incredibly great for ALL SEASONS not just for Christmas, for people visiting, excellent business, and offering options other than pancakes. read more

I used to live in the area and ate at Clifton Mill a lot. Whenever I had company in town I would take them there to eat. That was over ten years ago and things have changed. I was in town for the weekend with a group of 5 others and I promised them a great experience, but boy was I embarrassed after dinner that night. Things have changed for the worse! Where to start... I talked up the buffalo burger for days before going only to find out that it's only on the lunch menu and you can't order from the lunch menu for dinner. (Although you can order breakfast from the kids menu for dinner ). So I ordered the "dinner" beef burger which was made of an overly dry frozen beef patty on stale bread and cold cold cold fries. Back to the kids menu. No options for fruit or veggies and the grilled cheese sandwich was only a half sandwich, which, for a kid who doesn't eat too close to the crust, this would = about 3 bites of grilled cheese. So I asked if I could order a full sized grilled cheese (which is on the lunch menu) and pay extra. Nope. Really? I mean, really? I can only order half a sandwich? Unless I buy 2 kids meals?! One of my guests wanted a BLT (From that darn lunch menu again) but had to settle for the BLT salad from the dinner menu. The salmon was okay but came with burnt snow peas. The roast beef was just like Denty Moore or the like. The chips tasted like cardboard. Side salads consist of 4 wilted pieces of lettuce and a crouton. I will say that the staff was very friendly and it looked as if they were little over worked that night. That is the only thing keeping me from giving it a One Star rating. As we were leaving (about 7:20-ish), an elderly couple, and a family of four were being turned away because they were closing the dinning room at 7:30 that night instead of the usual 8:00 closing time. These folks drove all the way out here knowing they close at 8:00 only to get turned away and left to drive another 15-30 minutes to find somewhere else to eat! I felt so sorry for those people! And the family had younger kids; and kids aren't always fun when dinner plans suddenly change. I will say that the potential for Clifton Mill is still there, but things need to change! The place has a lot of potential but it is not as good as it once was. I would try it again my next time in town, but with low expectations this time, and I hope I am a fan again after dinner. read more

Fun winter lights display! But be prepared to wait a long time in traffic when you arrive and depart. The lights are all in a concentrated area so people gather and push (just accidentally because they're not paying attention to you, but instead the lights). I'd suggest eating something beforehand because they did sell hot chocolate but not much else. Be prepared for LARGE CROWDS of people. Just be prepared to be patient with a nice payout of light displays. $10 admission price is what we paid for each adult and we parked about a half mile down the road on the street. read more

I'm sorry, but I guess I don't get the attraction of the Mill. Perhaps as an historic place, in a beautiful, bucolic setting. But for the prices the food was just not very good. We had dinner there, as part of a pre-wedding family dinner, and could chose either from the breakfast or dinner menu (but, oddly, not the lunch menu). My wife had the "steak" with mashed potatoes, and I had the "steak" sandwich, with fries. Good gravy, what kind of steak was that? A cube steak? Minute steak? Mine looked like an oblong hamburger, but with less taste, and came topped with melted cheese of some kind, french fried onions, which seemed OK, and lettuce and tomato on a hoagie roll. No sauce (I should have put mayo or perhaps A-1 on it to get some flavor out of it). The best I can say is it wasn't gristly. My wife ordered her steak "medium rare." Ha Ha Ha. Joke was on her, as she had pretty much the same "steak" that was on my sandwich. Dry, slightly dense, cube-steak. Her mashed potatoes were so dry that no amount of butter, or several of those small tubs of half'-and-half, could spruce up. Perhaps we should have ordered off the breakfast menu, as several folks sounded pretty pleased with their chicken and waffles or other breakfast dishes. The prices were way too high for the quality of food. Waffle House is higher quality that this. There's a little country store attached, which seemed quaint. I had no idea there was a mill, a gorge, a covered bridge, or anything. It would have been nice to have known that as it would have made the "restaurant" experience perhaps more palatable. After a disappointing first attempt to dine in at the famed Historic Clifton Mills Restaurant where just a week or two prior we drove in from out of town only to find them freshly closed early for the day, we are happy to report to you, dear Yelpers and Yelpees, that the Clifton Mills breakfast experience was well worth the wait! Their picturesque immaculately cozy dining room overlooking the gorge was positively enchanting, mesmerizing even, but adding to that was their cheerful and intuitive staff who more than accommodated my hungry 5 year old after overhearing him talking about how hungry he was on the way in, without a word from me to prompt it! It was all of the goodness within their hearts. They had food out within minutes of us arriving, just for him. Aww! We got to order in peace since he was so busy chowing with great enthusiasm! He had just had his first sleepover and had been too over excited to eat the prior day's offered dinner or even breakfast at his friend's home, despite his Mother's sweet hospitality. He was indeed quite ravenous! Our breakfasts were even more amazing than the photos we viewed here before arriving. The food was fairy tale huge, and the pecan smoked bacon was the best bacon either myself or my Husband had ever had in our lives. The pancakes were gigantic, fluffy yet dense and chewy, a little dense for my tastes but still most entirely enjoyable! My only suggestion is what a joy of perfection it would be if they were to offer REAL Maple Syrup for their glorious pancakes! I offer that gently of course, as even with fake syrup, their charm far far surpassed any perceived room for even the minutest of improvement. Sigh! I'm in love! The patrons next to us said the buckwheat pancakes were delicious, too. I'll have to try them one of these days! They looked incredible. The bread they use for their toast looked homemade, and while they don't make it themselves they do get it from a local bakery, whom might I say, as a fellow scratch bread baker, did a fantastic job making their bread! I could taste the perfectly aged yeast in the bread, it was ambrosial. Lovely! Their eggs left room for improvement, but again, let me just say the charm this place oozes is more than enough to intoxicate the senses into believing anything that comes from within is made of finery! The prices were very reasonable, the gift shop was quite enjoyable (so long as I wasn't being a clumsy ox and knocking things over, phew!) and the area around the Mill is truly beckoning those who dine here to tread the paths and take in the breathtaking beauty that surrounds this utopia of charm and nature. Lastly, I absolutely adore their dinnerware! There is simply no finer way to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee than in a cup and saucer as whimsically beautiful as theirs. The omlets are plentiful, but the pancakes are more for show (huge), but really not all that tasty. No amount of butter and syrup can moisten them up. This place was awful! Dirty. Old Christmas lights everywhere. Yes, it's on a stream but the windows were so dirty you had to look through the spider webs to see it. Now for the food. Terrible. I had some kind of open faced beefish sandwich that tasted like salt! Only salt. My friend had a burger and limp soggy fries. He thought they might have been baked. Burger was served on bread that was very gummy. Oh, I don't want to forget to tell you about the soggy croutons on my salad. Clifton Mill is definitely overblown in terms of quality of the food and the customer service. I watched some senior citizens have their gift certificates rejected on questionable grounds on Father's Day. Apparently they sell gift certificates which do not display expiration dates, yet they quit honoring for senior citizens on holidays. I'm not used to seeing that level of poor customer service in any place really, and it's just a dumb way to run business. Why do it? As far as the food is concerned, it's the bare minimum. Bacon, toast, eggs, hamburgers, reuben sandwiches.. There is not a single thing really that's special or above the minimum when it comes to these dishes. They're bland, the minimum, definitely nothing exciting here. No one is getting elated about the food quality in Clifton Mill. Nothing. And it could DEFINITELY be priced more appropriately, in this light. The only reason for coming to Clifton Mill is for the Christmas lights and to enjoy the historic mill ambiance, which admittedly is fun. If the restaurant would change its management and hire some remotely decent cooks, this could be a good restaurant and give customers what they want, rather than treat them like strangers with cash. read more

Only go at Christmas time I guess We wanted to check this out on our way to Yellow Springs and eat lunch there and scout around. It was during the day and there was not anything going on, no activities and nothing to scout around really except for the area by the mill. The dining experience was horrendous. First, the workers up front were complaining. Second, the host seemed frazzled as she said "just 3" to us (not a "hello" or a "welcome") They had limited menu options because it was lunchtime, so I ordered soup and salad and was scolded by a very unfriendly server, because it was only offered Mon - Fri. The print must have been very small because I never did find where it said that. Third, my friend's chicken sandwich had bugs in it - not one, but two. When he went to go find someone we took a picture of the specimens. Then when the Manager (?) came by, she was skeptical it was a bug. She didn't really apologize but kind of just stood there for a moment with a weird skeptic expression on her face, just looking at us. We zoomed the pic to show the legs and antennas. By that time me and my other friend were over it and did not want to eat anymore. We just wanted to get out. Our meals were comped but he still had to pay for his flat root beer and my meh coffee. We go to Clifton Mill to see their annual Christmas light show, and it is amazing. Apparently they received an award in 2014 for top 10 best public light displays. I've never seen a light show that even comes close. They also have a miniature village display that is so enchanting. It has a diner from the 1950's and a drive in movie theater. My kids were fascinated watching all the moving features. It was really magical. read more

What a beautiful sight to behold! All the lights, the Christmas village, Santa andore make this a magical place to see at Christmas time. It's stunning to see 4 million lights twinkling on the buildings, bridge, ground and more. We loved the light show with music on her half hour. It's just long enough to keep everyone's attention. They will tell you the best place to stand to view is by the bridge so you see the lights on the bridge and more. I saw several people head into the store to the covered deck to see the show as well. It was way too packed for us to venture inside. The Santa collection is amazing! Wow! So many Santa's and then seeing Santa pop out the chimney to wish good cheer to all was a sweet touch! I definitely Recommend seeing this place at Christmas and it's quite lovely during the spring and summer as well. They won the light battle and the award is above the register in the store. When I discovered I would be working Christmas and the night of my beloved's birthday, I knew I had only one night -- a Tuesday night -- to cram in all the magic of the holidays and a little romance. Clifton Mill saved Christmas. I picked her up, told her to dress warmly and guided my pickup down dark, snowy roads. She had no idea where we were going. When we finally rounded the bend, the whole site was glowing with Christmas lights. She loved it. The grounds didn't take long to cover, and there wasn't much to see, but families were bustling with cheer and the lights show was fun. I would suggest adding a few food vendors and restrooms. The lines were a bit lengthy. And the $8 cover was a bit steep. I'd like to return in the spring, summer and fall. read more

I can only offer up 3 stars, and most of that is on the service we received. Before I get to critical, let me explain, that we had 10 people in our party. We had a minimum of an hour wait when we checked in at the hostess stand. Once we got seated, and ordered, we had another hour wait for our food. Really unacceptable, considering the prices they charge. I had French toast... 2 slices of bread, cut in half... $7.79! Sausage was extra... several people in our group had fries, which were cold, but wouldn't complain in fear was waiting for hot ones. 10 months out of the year, the mill is a great quiet little place to get enormous pancakes, but come Christmas thongs change drastically! Millon's of lights adorn the mill and gorge to form quite a sight! Being a local it was a fun little attraction to do once, but it is a bit expensive and if you ask me, it wouldn't be worth the long drive people seem to make. Maybe a good place to pop the question or visit If you're already in the area, but no necessarily worth a long trek. If you are in the area, make the short drive to Cedarville, the two small coffee shops in town serve tastey coffee drinks and delicious food! There's also a gas station, Dollar General, and a cute little ice cream shop! Overall it's kinda touristy and gimmicky. Might not be worth the longer drive, bit of your in the area. OK, first the good. Loved the eggs benedict. Not your typical eggs benedict as they use country ham instead of canadian bacon and toasted biscuits instead of english muffins. The bacon was also good. My wife said the pancakes were decent and were absolutely huge. At least 12 inches in diameter, and pretty thick too. Now the bad. The buspeople need to learn that there's more to preparing a table for the next customers than clearing the dishes and wiping down the table. Like, cleaning under the table. The floor, especially under the tables,, was littered with dirty napkins, straw wrappers, food (more than just crumbs) creamer and jelly packets, etc. And when the bussers did come to clean up the tables, they were loud. The sound of the busser just dropping the glasses and plates in her bin were earshattering (I think she might've broken a couple) and the people at the table next to the one she was clearing complained about the racket. I was on the other side of the room, and I thought it was painfully loud so I can only imagine what it was like for them. There was a line to be seated when we got there and it was still going strong when we left. And the funny thing is, the entire time we were in the dining room (which was over an hour. More on that later) a table for 6 sat there with dirty dishes and glasses on it along with the bus bin. You'd think they'd make more of an effort to clear the tables when there are several people waiting to be seated. Service was extremely slow. 45+ minutes to get scrambled eggs, pancakes and eggs benedict? DId you have to wait for the chickens to lay them? Still we did better than the tables behind me and in front of me as both of them had their orders messed up which meant even more waiting for them. They were setting up for their Xmas lights show so we couldn't walk across the covered bridge everyone writes about, and with all the lights they had draped off the thing, the bridge wasn't all that impressive to look at. As someone else mentioned, the outside of the building could use a good cleaning. We were in the patio room and would've had a good view were it not for all the cobwebs on the outside of the window. And parking is non existent. You have to park in the street which seems to hold less cars than they had tables. (again begging the question of how there could be a wait for a table) The mill and other historic buildings (which seemed to be vacant) on the street have a lot of potential. However, the owners of the mill restaurant seem to do the bare minimum, and only then if they see a direct connection between what they do and profit. So despite the pretty good food, the issues with wait and cleanliness make it something you can skip. read more

Wow, they must have had an off night. Went the day after Thanksgiving, opening day for the light show. One hour after opening and they were out of chili, pork bbq, and cornbread. They also shorted us a hot dog and we had to order another one, starting at the end of the line. They didn't tell me they were out of cornbread until after I got my soup, which tasted like canned beans reheated in the microwave. I'd be more forgiving because it was the beginning of the Christmas season, but this place runs as a restaurant year round! How can they be out of most of the hot food one hour after opening? The Christmas show is exquisite. Thousands of lights, light shows, an amazing tiny village and lots of Christmas displays. It is well worth the admission price. This is a nice place for breakfast. The food is good, pancakes are HUGE, coffee is good. The views can't be beat. It gets super busy mid-mornings on weekends, so I recommend going early or on a weekday. You can walk off your enormous pancake meal on the grounds or at nearby Clifton Gorge. Evenings after Thanksgiving, the Christmas lights are delightful. Big crowds on weekends for this event. read more

My family and I visit this place whenever we are nearby. We love history and this was a mill more than 200 years ago. The food is good (not great) but the building is really cool. We have been at least 10 times over the last 5 years. read more

This is the second year I have come here for the Christmas lights. This place is amazing. The 3.5 million lights are gorgeous to see. The light show is worth the wait, which plays every 20 minutes. It's a little far drive from Cincinnati but worth the drive. It does get extremely crowded, crowded enough to where you cannot even move. I do think the best time to go is towards the end of the night an hour or so before closing, because most people will be fine by then and it will be easier to get out of the parking lot.
