Literally THE BEST sauerkraut balls I've ever had in my life!! Definitely a must try if you're in Yellow Springs!

The ambiance is what you come for but the food is very average. 1827. Wowza. The best part of the meal was the kid's menu chicken strips. The sauerkraut balls left a lot to be desired. They had a much different texture and taste than the ones in other parts of Ohio. The black bean soup was disappointingly thin and not very seasoned. The German potato salad is good. Food aside, I do love the ambiance here. I want to know the ghost stories. I want to know more about the history. It is so old and these walls have stories; I'm certain of it. The staff is very friendly. Parking is terrible, even at 3 PM on a Thursday. I really am torn between 3 and 4 stars, but having a great waitstaff is what bumps it up. read more

Aside from the oldest tavern in Ohio vibe, everything else was ordinary, uninspired and unremarkable, right down to the '70s elementary school cafeteria dish ware. The "Bier Cheese" was lovingly selected from among the finest Kroger jarred cheeses, and the sliced bratwurst was unappealing and bland (Oscar Meyer is my guess). On the plus side, the curry ketchup and vegan peanut cilantro dressing were highlights. Go for the historic atmosphere and a beer and you won't be disappointed. Our server was friendly and attentive, but the time from ordering to getting our food was longer than had expected. A side was forgotten as well, but billed for it. The second oldest restaurant in Ohio. We had dinner there while on a brief stay in Yellow Springs. The staff was friendly, they had a nice outdoor patio to sit at. The food was good but a few tiny things were missing like the advertised pickle spear with my veggie burger. Ye Olde Tavern in Yellow Springs is a charming small local spot. We stopped by after visiting the Yellow Springs Street Fair, but unfortunately the menu was very limited that day. We sat outside on the patio, which was beautiful and relaxing. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The food was okay--labeled as German style, though it didn't feel very traditional to me. This was my second visit. I had the grilled cheese and it was delicious. I would go back to have this sandwich. You get to pick a side. The price was very reasonable. The patio is comfortable but can be rather hot when the weather is. I personally wouldn't eat inside because it smells like an old building. Too much smell for me. read more

On a Sunday afternoon we stopped in for lunch. There were four of us. When you first walk in there is a cute little bar, we walked past that into the next room. The openings are short so watch your head. The server sat us in a both but the guys could not fit in them comfortably so we moved to a table. We ordered fried pork belly bites, fish and chips, the bourbon burger, and the grilled cheese. I think the pork belly need to be marinated in something- they are bland by themselves but they come with a spicy thousands island type sauce and celery. The fish and chips were probably the best thing on the menu. I tried some of my husband fish and chips, it was cooked perfectly and I really liked the chips. My cousins ordered the bourbon burger and he said it was good. I thought my grilled cheese was bland. I haven't had a grilled cheese in years and it sounded good. I should have gotten the fish and chips. They have a wide selection of menu items to choose from. Stop in for an adult beverage while roaming the streets of yellow springs. read more

My sister and I stopped here since we were starving and nearly everywhere had a 1 hr wait. It's a cute little spot that has a specific charm to it. You can definitely tell it's been there for a while. The staff were nice and we got served pretty quickly. The food is nothing phenomenal honestly. We got two burgers and split them ( the Toni and pfieffer). The jalapeño was definitely the favorite from both of us. We also tried their fried mushrooms. They were good, just a lot of breading. The burgers were good but not the best burger I've ever had by any means. My girlfriend & I ate here on September 19th. We ordered an appetizer of the Sauerkraut Balls. I ordered the Fish and Chips platter. My girlfriend ordered the Shrimp Basket. The atmosphere is very unique in this establishment. This is supposed to be the oldest operating tavern in Ohio. Inside, it is darkly lit with a lot of dark wood furnishings. When we went, there weren't very many people but it does have a nice vintage vibe. The Sauerkraut Balls appetizers came in a basket of four with spicy mustard. They were fried very good and were tasty. The Shrimp Basket and Fish and Chips basket both come with sidewinder fries which kind of look like a cork screw. I enjoyed my fried fish and my girlfriend enjoyed her shrimp. Both were fried to a delicious golden crisp and were very tasty. The sidewinder fries were good as well. Food was served promptly and was fresh. I recommend. Yellow Springs has a very colorful environment with a hippie vibe. This a great spot to visit if you are visiting and looking for a unique place to eat. read more

The Ye Old Trail Tavern (Ohio's oldest tavern) was today's lunch location. Sitting on their patio felt like snagging a VIP seat to the best people-watching spot in town, all while basking in the comfiest warm air. The fish and chips were perfect! The fish? Crispy on the outside, melt-in-your-mouth inside. And those chips? Couldn't stop munching on them. They were a little light with the small sample of cole slaw...could have provided more Then came my wife's BLT - thick, crispy bacon with the freshest tomato and lettuce, all hugged by perfectly toasted bread. Service was chill and on point, making the whole vibe just right. Whether you're here for the fish and chips, that BLT, or just to chill and soak in the scene, the Tavern is a good choice. The weather finally cooled down for a short while so we could eat on a patio. If your near the water fountain you might get a small splash every minute or two. We decided to get sauerkraut ball fantastic, Richelle doesn't like mustard so I get all the good stone ground mustard. We decided to get sandwiches: Richelle got the Das Meer, beer battered cod, of course. I got the bourbon burger, of course. Richelle says the fish sandwich is outstanding, best in Springfield area. I visit the larger Dayton area monthly and have walked past this location several times, but this time I grabbed a spot at the bar to watch a little Thursday night football. The menu has many options, but after a recommendation for the bartender I selected the fish and chips. They have many beer selections and I got a local amber on tap. Super cold! Looking around the bar/restaurant, there is some history here. Not to mention the pennies covering the bar. I plan to stop again next month and explore the menu and the local beers again. Saw this place when we went to Yellow Springs for a Mystery Picnic event. Rustic looking old place with some charm. Climbed the stairs to a small waiting area, got the 10-minute wait time and headed outside to the fire pit. Grabbed a quick draft (lots of bottles and cans but no hard liquor). By the time I got two sips down the table was ready. Decades of carved names in the tables. Four season room made it a lot bigger inside. Smaller menu but good good food. My wife had the fish and chips and I got the Donar Kebap. Always have to try something new. It was like a gyro with crunchy cabbage and a great sauce. I was really excited to try Ye Olde Trail Tavern but it fell a bit short of my expectations. It's a really unique place and has a nice outside patio & beer garden but the food and service was just okay. We were seated fairly quickly but didn't get waited on for 15+ minutes and when we did finally order our drinks and appetizers it took a long time for them to come out. I ordered a bloody Mary which was made with an in house mix that I was not a fan of. For an appetizer we ordered the loaded bier cheese fries which were definitely the highlight. The bier cheese was delicious and paired really nicely with the loaded fries. For my main meal I ordered the Ben Jammin' Burger which was just okay. It was served on sourdough and it was just too much bread for me. We ended up being there longer than we wanted due to the slow service. All in all it was just an okay experience. read more

Great beer list and pretty good food makes this spot a must try in Yellow Springs. For starters, I had the Left Hand Peanut Butter Porter and the Currywurst appetizer. The beer was awesome. The Currywurst was ok. Thinly sliced wurst with curry ketchup is very German and pretty good. It wasn't my favorite wurst ever but pretty good. For entree I had the Fish Basket. (Basically cod fish and chips). They were fantastic! Lightly breaded cod, fried nicely. The cod was flaky, well cooked and moist. Definitely worth a try if you're not looking for a burger or sandwich. Overall, I would definitely recommend Ye Olde Trail Tavern. Great service, bar and food! read more

It was one of the worst cheeseburgers I have ever had, and I'm more than 70 years old, so I have a lot of experience. After finishing my meal, I wished I had gone to McDonald's. The Patti was thin, extremely overcooked, after I had requested something closer to medium rare, and just about as tasteless as a piece of cardboard. I know this place has some other menu items that are significantly better, but all I have to say is I will never ever order another cheeseburger from this restaurant. Great historic place that we stopped at on our vacation from Los Angeles. It was established in 1827 and is said to be the oldest tavern in Ohio. I like this tavern! It's the oldest tavern in Ohio! Established in 1827. I've been here at least twice, once with my sweet Mom-in-law, and we likely had her great grands with us for a day out of girls exploring time! It was a fun visit. Yellow Springs is a very very eclectic area similar to Little Five Points in Atlanta or Five Points in my hometown of Huntsville Alabama. Think handmade jewelry, used book stores and casual delicious dining all within easy walking distance. Oh and the requiest house cat, or three in the used book store! I digress. We had the delicious beer cheese dip and pretzels and I had the grilled turkey breast, sauerkraut, swiss and thousand Island dressing on pumpernickel rye served with a dill pickle and a side. I recall a full bar meaning I had a white wine or two! Service was friendly and good! Sadly our next visit was following my father-in-law's funeral; however, the Tavern provided a much needed distraction for our large and sorrowful group and we enjoyed our family time here where it is of course, livelier than a graveyard. No one complained about anything, atmosphere, service, cleanliness were all great. Only possible complaint is it's so popular and you can't make reservations. That's why our group of 6 were unable to eat dinner here last month at Thanksgiving, they were on a 1.5 hour wait for a party of our size. Looking forward to visiting again next year! read more

We were in town to hit up the new comedy club and decided to stop here for dinner. Fun fact, it is the oldest Tavern in Ohio, so that made the atmosphere feel really olde time and inviting). We were sat inside in the back corner and my husband and I couldn't sit across from each other without our legs touching, but we made the most of it! A wonderful place to come to after a hiking trip! I got a veggie dog with sauerkraut with a beer and it was delicious (pretty spicy). The staff was incredibly nice. The Ye Olde Trail Tavern is the oldest Tavern in Ohio and it happens to be located in Yellow Springs. As far as food is concerned, I find it to be good although I tend to struggle to remember what I had. It's a bit better than your average bar food with more variety on the menu. I think more recently I had the fish and chips, and we had the pretzels with beer cheese as an appetizer recently and thought those were really good. Think that I have also had the onion rings and also liked those a lot too. We have eaten here probably 4-5 times, which tells you we obviously like it, I just can't tell you what we eat when we go here. Ate here for lunch on the way out of a 2 day camping trip. Walked right in on a Saturday, no wait. We got the Pork Bites for an appetizer, and they were absolutely excellent. I got the bourbon burger, and it was solid. Better than average, but not the best I have ever had. Their german potato salad side is EXCELLENT, as well as their fries. My girlfriend got the wings, and they were surprisingly good. They are smaller wings with crunchy thick breading, yet they have a surprising amount of meat on them. They were also delicious. Overall a great experience. However, a bit pricey for lunch. Very reasonable prices for dinner, though. The reason this didn't get 5 stars- the booth seating is HORRIBLY uncomfortable. Its awful. Im a bigger guy, and not only is it a tight fit with the table, but these stools HURT my butt.
