So the name of this place is Clock drive in. It is not a drive-in. It is a diner. You have to get out of your car and go in. I sat there for 15 minutes waiting on someone to come take my order because there are menus out on the stalls that you have to park in. The sign they do have you could not see because the door was open because the place has no working AC. I'm my job I've been fortunate to have traveled around the globe a few times. I love sampling local cuisine. I have yet to find a chili cheeseburger that can match the taste of The Clock. I can't explain it. Maybe it's the mustard. It could be the cheese. Or, could it be the beef or chili? All I know is that it's unbeatable. This is the second burger place I've had in Greenville since moving here in July, and I gotta say that it delivered less than I expected. Burger: nice, simple, cheap burger with plenty of meat. I mean, I'm a simply burger lover. I don't need all the fancy stuff on top to be happy. The only problem I had with it was that the one I had was a kinda underseasoned. I was hoping that by getting the chili burger I'd get that nice, deep chili flavor, but I didn't really get that. The chili was also a little drier than I had had in the past. The mustard and onions were the only source of seasoning I felt l had on that burger, and in that respect it was disappointing. The other things--meat to bun ratio, size, price, beef flavor--all great. I can't say it's a burger I'd return for, but it's definitely a burger I don't regret. Chicken Livers: This is a thing that I get at pretty much every place that puts it on their menu. It came with half and half fries and onion rings because my partner wanted to try them. The fry on all three items were good, but it's not my type of onion ring. Also the sauce that came with it was not great. It had this almost alcoholic flavor with a hint of smoke--maybe liquid smoke? And I'm not sure exactly what's in it that caused the flavor, but I didn't dig it and it didn't do the chicken livers or onion rings justice. The livers were the stars. This was the thing that I really liked about my meal. They were cooked really well and had a nice, soft texture, but the batter was crispy, not burnt. Slaw: I like this, even though it's a pretty standard slaw--other than the fact that there's a bit of cinnamon in it. I liked the cinnamon, because it made it a little bit unique. I ended putting it on my burger because I'm a Carolina child and love my burgers all the way. Overall, I'd probably stop by if it was on my way, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. I'd really put it at a 3.5 based on the food alone, but the nice, fine ice, the mom and pop atmosphere and the price really bumped it up for me. read more

I really enjoy going to little family owned diners such as this. Being a college student, there's not many times when I eat out, but I decided to treat myself yesterday, and go to the Clock Drive In. I had high expectations, as most family owned places are awesome. Boy was I wrong, I ordered the onion rings, they were soggy and lukewarm and none of them were the ring, just bits and pieces. This place has the best onion rings and grilled chicken sandwich anywhere! The onion rings are crisp and not too thick - just right! I don't think I can do the chicken sandwich justice...the chicken is juicy, tastes like it's been marinated in light spices...it's served with lettuce, tomato, mayo...delicious. Hotdogs are really good here too. Fries are just frozen crinkle cuts from a bag - but served up hot, they're still tasty. You order your food at the counter and they let you know when it's ready. Any Greenville native knows of the 'Clock'. It used to be the hopping teenage spot in the late sixties and early seventies, being the hip place to go to see the boys and be seen. They used to have curb service, but stopped that years ago... Why? And yes, you go in to order and can take out or dine in and there's not one bad thing on the menu. My favorite is a half and half cheeseburger plate with 'REAL' Southern iced tea. You ask... What is a half and half plate? Sandwich of your choice, fried onion rings, french fries and slaw. Yummilicious! The best, absolute best cheeseburger in town, or anywhere for that matter. And, T.F. is right... If you dine there a lot, you are recognized by the staff and this is fast food, Greek dining that is so delicious, you'll think you died and went to Heaven!
