Lunch Saturday was at Huey Magoo's with some of my family. It wasn't too crowded at 11:45, no wait time to order our food. I ordered the 5 piece hand breaded tenders meal with a lemonade. Huey Magoo's is a lot like ZAXBY'S use to be. Our food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. The Texas toast, nice sized chicken tenders, plenty of seasoned crinkle cut fries, Cole slaw and the Magoo sauce that taste exactly like the Zax sauce. The tenders were tender, not fried hard, the Cole slaw wasn't that good, but it's not a deal breaker. Zaxby's should take some pointers from them, and get better than they are with those half sized hard fried tough tenders. I enjoyed my food, and spending time with my family. It was 1:30 pm on a random Tuesday and I finally had the opportunity to stop in at the much hyped Huey Magoo's to see what it was all about. There was no line and I was able to order right away. But there were about five cars in the drive through, three were waiting to get up to the order Mike. The reason I say this is that I noticed the workers, while very pleasant in demeanor, were also not in any hurry to clear the line/ orders. Their pace was very casual. Then one of them comes around the counter and yells to the others, very dramatically, "We are wrapped, y'all." Meaning, she thought the line for the drive through was wrapped around the building. She emphatically repeated here statement...."Like, wrapped, y'all!" Well, I don't know what was expected, but this had no impact on the crew. It seemed that there was an ample crew too. Three were working on unwrapping the drive through, one was sweeping and there was the front counter clerk and at least four in the kitchen that I saw working. If they were not dabbing up the three or four friends that showed up in the restaurant. I figure this may be a high school hang out since it is so close to WHHS. Makes sense. My three piece tenders combo took 6 minutes to get fulfilled. To the credit of the front clerk, she saw my order delivered in the window and took care of bagging it and condiments etc, as it was a "to go" order. The restrooms and restaurant were clean. I mentioned the staff was pleasant, but distracted and slow (including getting my order out, but I appreciated she got on it). Three tenders, a fry, a drink, and a slice of Texas Toast for $12.19. The drink being $2.69, but I wanted to try the tea. The tea was good, not too watery, not too bitter and I'm a 1/3 sweet 2/3 unsweetened guy, so good tea and good crunchy nuggets of ice. But, if you blindfolded me, I would be challenged to differentiate between Huey and Zaxby. The chicken is similar, Zaxbys is a bit saltier due to brine or longer brine. The crunch is similar. Magoo sauce is a bit thicker and slightly spicier than Zax, but if you weren't paying too much attention, who would ever know? It was good, with a trip back while in the area, but not a place I would drive to as a destination meal. read more

Did dinner with my wife at Huey Magoo's when they first opened in Greenville, SC. Below is a review from our second trip. The chicken strips are crispy and tender. Last time I got them without sauce to see if their claims were true. I'd still pick Zaxby's or CFA. The fries are crinkle cut. The toast is better than most, Texas style, nicely toasted, no skimping on the butter, with a sesame seeded top. Leisa got the sweet & hot sauce. Sweet. Then HOT. I got the lemon pepper this time. I am so happy that I finally decided to try this place out. The food is absolutely amazing. You definitely will leave full. The tenders are a decent size and so juicy and delicious. You get a good amount of fries and the butter toast was also amazing. I'm a sauce person so I tried the ranch, honey mustard and the Huey sauce. The ranch was top notch!! The fries and Magoo sauce are good, but we don't care for the toast - it's very soggy. When we ask to leave that off, they offer us extra fries instead, but they never can seem to get this right. We also like the salad, although it's a little bare. It could use a few additions. The one negative here is that service can be very spotty. It can a long time to order. They did a great job with the building and branding but I was not impressed with the product. I purchased a 3 piece meal and requested the tenders to be sauced not realizing that just to have them dipped in a sauce was another .50 cents. The chicken was good but the tenders are very small. Instead of the regular fries I ordered the house-made chips and they were the highlight of the meal. Fried to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning. Once you include the drink my total was over $9.00 and I did not leave even close to being full. I will be giving them another try but it will be either for a sandwich or wrap. This restaurant has lots of extra charges and forgotten items. The pricing here is misleading. The combo price on the menu does not include a drink (like every other fast-food restaurant). I've been charged for extra sauce each time, but I never received any. They've also left off the coleslaw that's included in the combo. One forgotten item is a mistake, but they've left off the coleslaw and extra sauce all three times I've visited. The staff member who took our order was prompt and friendly. We got the meal for two 8 tenders with fries and coleslaw and a diet coke. Once to the window our order was ready to go. The staff member was really friendly and our food was out to us as soon as we paid. Probably just a first day hiccup but our soda was flat. The tenders were good had a light batter and crunch and still juicy. The fries were average crinkle cut. The buttered bread was good. The Magoo sauce definitely reminds me of Canes...honestly overall its reminiscent of Cane's. I recommend anyone to try it, but my first ever experience eating it was less than stellar. I will commend the staff for being great, getting the order right, and being efficient compared to other first day places who take forever.
