Cloudy donuts has been on my radar for a while for being (the first?) Black owned vegan donut spot in the city. The interior is very sleek - the donuts are on display like jewelry and it's very minimalist inside without much seating. Service was very friendly - there are some limited flavors in the "mini" size but most are available only as the regular size. The donuts are not particularly big so pretty easy for one person to finish the regular. The flavor profiles were unique - I opted for the blueberry sage which was a classic yeast donut with a blueberry/sage topping including a fresh blueberry. Wait why are the ratings so low!? These 100% vegan donuts have literally converted me into a donut person. Fluffy, light, and not too sweet (asian tastebuds approved), with real fruit flavors that actually shine through. I usually find donuts overly sweet and artificial, but Cloudy Donuts completely changed my mind. These were not only pretty but with just the right amount of light frosting. To make them vegan, they use applesauce instead of eggs, coconut milk in place of dairy, and vegetable shortening instead of butter. My bf is severely lactose intolerant, but also has a sweet tooth. Preposterously small and overpriced, and also not donuts. A donut has a hole in the center--these do not. These aren't even 'donut holes'--or if they are, they're a slightly flattened version. But, shape and size aside, what matters is taste, right? Well, these don't even taste like donuts. The glaze or topping may be sweet, but the donut part just tastes like bland, generic hamburger buns. In fact, I've had hamburger buns that were more flavorful than this. At $6 each (with some flavors even more expensive) I expect more. Especially in NYC, where we actually have other vegan donut options, all of which are far superior to this, and cheaper. You get one boston cream donut from Dunwell (way bigger, way tastier, and cheaper) and you'll be riding that deliciousness high for months. If you get a donut at Cloudy Donuts, you'll feel like you're being pranked. Apparently back when they first started, they had bigger and better donuts. Clearly they don't care anymore. She was quite patient and answered everyone's questions. I was there late on a Saturday and they had several flavors left. All donuts were fresh and yummy. The shop is small, and lovely. However, there is no pricing, and the flavors available are not always clear. I have been vegan for a long time and had many vegan donuts. These are in the bottom 30% percentile of vegan donuts currently available in NYC. The storefront is weird as hell. It's an empty box with a few random dried plants and white things to take instagram pictures near. Note that the prices on individual items is not labeled. The people in front of us got a box of six, so we also got a box of six. The box was one of those brown folding containers from the Whole Foods salad bar, and the six donuts fit inside with plenty of space to spare. The donuts themselves are smaller than palm sized, maybe 10% larger than a donut hole from a typical donut shop. After we left, my partner and I sat down to eat them. I asked her how much they were, and when she checked her phone, the charge was $41 for the box of six. We looked online, and found that you can get a box of six for pickup for $27 (this may have been the Brooklyn location, though). We went back confused, and the person working was pretty condescending as he told us each individual mini donut was $6, while the vanilla sugar twist and the larger filled donut (which we were informed we were lucky to get) were $7.50 each. This made our box $39 before tax. Moving onto the donuts themselves. We got: 2x crème brûlée - filling was pretty good. Outside was just a slightly crispier glaze. Pretty good. 1x fig balsamic - I hated it, my partner didn't. 1x espresso chocolate - just an espresso glaze with chocolate chips. Disappointing. 1x vanilla sugar twist - had the texture of a day old donut. Objectively bad. 1x cherry jam powdered donut. Probably my favorite of the bunch, but after going through the rest of the box it was hard to enjoy. Can't recommend this to anyone. read more

Walked by this last weekend and tried to come again during business hours this week. The guy behind the counter waved me in when I hesitated at the entrance bc I was on the phone. I ordered the pistachio and piña colada donuts. They both have toppings on them so I was surprised that he put them both in a paper bag so that the toppings could smear all over the place. When I got home, I realized he gave me a powdered sugar donut instead of the piña colada donut. I don't know why he would mix up the two or not ask me to clarify, especially since I pointed to the piña colada while ordering. He went to the rack of donuts when filling my bag so I did not realize until I got home that he made this mistake. I got that flavor for my fiancé so we were both disappointed. I tried the pistachio donut and it was incredibly underwhelming and stale. There was very little flavor and they taste like they are definitely not made there. I would not be surprised if they pre bought the base or at the very least do not make them fresh. My fiancé described his powdered sugar monstrosity as incredibly airy and flavorless as well. Both of them together cost about $10 and it was not worth it. It also was not worth the calories lol . Save your money and go to another bakery around here, as there are many to choose from.
