I've been a patron of Club Try-Angles for nearly 15 years. Admittedly I haven't been the most consistent patron over the years, but in that time I've seen the club slowly, and seemingly very suddenly, devolve from a dive bar with some level of respect for its patrons to a dive bar that's as lost as the current set of bartenders it employs behind its well. Don't get me wrong, I love my local gay dive bar - the patio is prime real estate, the billiards and darts are in playing condition, the dance floor is just the right size to get lost in, and the community is the very definition - but it should not take 30 minutes to get a drink, no matter how cheap the drinks are and no matter how slow or busy the joint gets. The toiles should not be covered in the same shit stains from the day, let alone the weeks(!), before. The speakers should not be so loud that you cannot communicate with the bartender or the person sitting next to you. With that said, I would say Club Try-Angles is actually entering a new "gayday" the likes of which I've never seen - blame it on all the new development around Central 9th and along Harvey Milk Boulevard. The community is more diverse, the crowds are bigger, and the camaraderie is louder! All wonderful things, but things the bar is showing it's no longer in the condition to support. If this staple of the queer community is going to thrive into the next decade, or even survive the next few years, it's going to need more TLC than its currently getting. Small things, like utilizing both sets of patio doors, cleaning the bathrooms, and strategically turning down the music would go a long way in showing that Club Try-Angles cares for its community. Additionally, reorganizing the well to be more efficient would go a long way to improving the time it takes to get a drink. Bartenders should not be bumping into each other in order to make every. single. drink! In this time of growth and change, what I would hate more than ever is for another VC Firm to buy the bar out from under us and put up a parking lot. We deserve to have this space, and we deserve to have this space show up for and represent those of us who claim Pride! read more

The last authentic gay bar in Salt Lake, event nights once a week almost every weekend. Any night of the week you go in the staff is happy to see you and help you. For a dive bar this place rocks! Do not recommend this place. A group of friends and I went on Thursday night for karaoke and signed up to sing some songs. The karaoke host was extremely rude and did not play our songs, while he hogged the mic and sang three songs in a row. When my friend tried to sing along, the host got visibly upset and told him to back off. And then after the song, the host (again while on the mic) told my friend to "not interrupt his moment" and then kept verbally escalating the argument when my friend didn't respond. We decided to leave due to this extremely poor treatment. It was literally a Thursday night at 12:30 am with minimal crowd and absolutely no reason for the host to act this way. Shameful of him especially as my friend did not say or behave any way negatively to him. Listen to the other negative reviews and stay away from this place for karaoke!!! read more

Unacceptable behavior from security - borderline assault. I came here with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. One person in our group (the birthday boy) briefly hit a vape on the dance floor, and the DJ immediately stopped his set to call over security- singling him out in front of the entire club. He was kicked out without warning or even a chance to step outside. While the staff reaction was over-the-top, my friend left without question. He later explained how humiliating this was for him, and that he would've apologized and stopped if he was just asked. The rest of us stayed on the dance floor for a moment, planning to leave to join our friend but taking a moment to try processing how extreme the reaction had been- when the same security guard suddenly approached us and barked "get out now." The music was still paused, and the guard's performative, aggressive tone felt completely unprofessional. It came off like a power trip- there was no reason to target the rest of our group, who had done nothing but dance and support the venue by ordering drinks (which we always make a point to do at bars with no cover). I calmly asked why, with no raised voice or hostility- just genuine concern. Without hesitation, the guard put his arm around my neck and dragged me out of the venue with excessive force. I was wearing a surgical boot from recent foot surgery, and the way I was handled caused pain and risk of additional injury to my foot. My brother, panicked, shouted that I had just had surgery- the guard ignored it and shoved me at the entrance. Multiple bar patrons approached me outside to say the security response was uncalled for, one even saying he was "shocked" at the aggressive response to my question. Even the bar's bouncer apologized to me. I've never been treated like this at any bar, and it was beyond humiliating. I've always been an easygoing, respectful guest. This wasn't a rowdy group- we brought positive energy and spent money. To be treated like this was flat-out wrong. When rule-abiding patrons are physically mistreated, it's more than bad service- it's a liability. This is a serious issue, and I've considered filing a police report. Support other queer bars that are actually safe and welcoming... SunTrapp and Milk+ are both strong recommends: better music, better crowds, respectful staff. read more

Try-Angles is a staple in Salt Lake City. A great place to relax and have a beer. The staff is always nice. A lot of regulars there.

Since we only have two LGBT only bars left in Salt Lake City this is your other alternative to the sun trapp. In a way I prefer this bar because it is more intimate and attracts a slightly older crowd than the the other bar. They have a patio, pool tables, a small dance area and a small stage. On Sundays they sponsor a barbecue and drag queen bingo by the matrons of Mayhem. They have fetish nights. I like that you can get a draft beer in a regular size mug or a gigantic mug, so you don't have to wait as often for another beer. I have never really tried cocktails here, because Utah has a strict pour measurement system. The bartenders are friendly and efficient. Don't get sideways here, because you will be 86'ed From the bar with a quickness! read more

In this case, we walked in, not much going on, but the bartender, Hammy, greeted us and was very friendly! We ordered drinks, which he made perfectly. We shot some pool, and ordered more drinks. We are from California, and actually own a bar/pub. He was kind enough to educate us on Utah alcohol laws, which was so educating... We would've stayed longer; but we're staying in Park City and had limited time in Salt Lake. But again, for a few cocktails, 3 rounds of pool and interaction with a local, we had a grand time! This is exactly what my husband and I wanted. It's your classic gay bar. They have everything you really need. Cheap booze. Friendly fun staff, all the bar games. Darts, Billiards, bar video games. They obviously have the hook up for Karaoke, great overall sound system. Juke box. Friendly vibes. I don't know what some people expect when you go to a bar like this, but I'm sure there is a chain booze establishment some of the 1 star reviews can visit instead. I'll be back. I cane to this club because it says it was a good one and for the community. Well I am very disappointed. Our Lyft driver tried to warn us and we gave it a try. I order a jaeger bomb and I just got a shot. Then somebody played the exorcist theme but the 25 min version and nobody at the club did anything about it. So annoying!!! Super packed, great range of different rooms to dance in. It's cramped when you first walk in and really dark, don't know what to expect really then once you're out of the cramped entrance it's a lively, high energy party with up beat music, they didn't play the same redundant stuff on the radio. The line at the bar is packed and feels like it takes forever but the customer service is still great. However there should definitely be more security post Covid at the bar, a guy tried trapping me and I tried signaling other people but they didn't notice - a friend thankfully saw & saved me but I understand there's only so much control that can happen at a club. I am supportive and happy that this bar is still gay and still supportive of its community. They are not the biggest or the most flashy but they are kind. I can tell they want members of the gay community to feel like they have a place to feel safe and welcomed at. They could have sold out long ago to easy money making schemes but for the most part they have stayed true to their business motto. If you are a gay male not from Salt Lake then I recommend this place much more than The Sun Trapp. At least here you will know you are at a gay club and will not have angry female staff members make fun or you! Spoke with an older guy who seemed to be the manager or owner and he was amazing but the club needs to have a serious makeover before they draw attention to themselves due to the fact it had a terrible DJ and staff. I give zero stars for the entertainment. The karaoke dj is a (excuse my language) a complete asshole. He declined my whole group from singing unless we tipped him. It was 100% mandatory for him. So therefore only 4 different people were singing all night. We spent money at place that is paying you to be there, and fyi you get tipped after your service sweetheart. In addition, if you sit at the back bar, you will not get served or noticed unless you stand in a line. I have been giving patronage to Club Try-Angles since 2006, and I would have to say that this is my favorite gay bar in Salt Lake City. Yes, it may be a little bit of a dive bar, but that only adds to its charm. The patrons for the most part are down to earth and polite with a mixed crowd of older to younger, twink to bear, vanilla to full on leather fetishist. There really is a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy! Along with it being a full service bar, Try-Angles includes a small dance floor, two pool tables, a dart board, a jukebox, and an arcade center. As well as having flat screen televisions placed throughout the bar. Not only does Club Try-Angles serve the cheapest beer in town (a big stein of beer will cost you $5.00), but the staff is incredibly friendly, and if you visit during the late afternoon when the bar is not terribly busy they are more than happy to strike up a conversation with the patrons. I can't recommend this establishment enough, and it is always my first suggestion for folks who are new to town looking to find a neighborhood gay bar that they can call home. From Friday to about Sunday, the bar does get quite busy. This is more especially true when there is a special event going on (i.e. underwear night, and fetish night). The music does get loud and is a little dated as the DJ seems to have a predilection for club anthems of the early 2000s. With that being said, the DJ does mix in quite a bit of newer top 40 hits, and dance club anthems. I can't help but feel that this only adds more to the charm. If you are looking for a local neighborhood gay bar that is without the douche factor, pretentiousness, and outright catty cruelty, that easily becomes the hallmark of your run-of-the-mill gay bar, then Try-Angles is certainly the place for you. After a bad experience at Club Jam, we gave Try-Angles a try. Talk about better service & a better vibe. David was so friendly & attentive. He was quick to get drinks made. Always a smile on his face. Didn't focus solely on "regulars". For 2 people out of town, he made us feel at home. We had a blast playing darts. Would definitely come back here. P.S. I was able to talk with a lot of people, flirt via the TV, and drink a great huge beer for $4.00! This club was a blast, and seems to have a good crowd of people who let you just be yourself! Our bartender was fantastic, we didn't know what we wanted and he helped us figure it out with zero scorn (which is sadly, pretty common amongst bartenders) and the drinks were HUGE! The mixed coctails were all served in enormous beer steins! The bar area is separate from the dance floor, you can still definitely hear the music but it's not as loud - it's nice for conversation, you still have to raise your voice to be heard but you don't need to shout. The outside is a little off-putting - it looks like kind of a shit hole and the parking lot could be better but don't be sacred, it's great inside. read more

This was my first experience filling out paperwork just to enter a bar before! For some reason, my out-of-town i.d. didn't work in their scanner. (It works in other scanners all the time.) So I had to fill out some paperwork and sign it. Ok....... Its not like I'm 22 or even 29, but ok. The space was decent, the drinks nice (for 1-oz liquor pours). Beer is served in massive glass mugs which require a strong wrist to hold. If you want a drink before last call, be sure to give them a few minutes notice. Their 9-volt battery-powered analog clock seems to be set a few minutes ahead of iPhone/cel phone/digital watch time and they won't serve you at 12:56 am. Kind of an all-around-old-school-bar vibe. We had a nice chat on the patio during the beer bust. Wasn't very busy then either. I do like the layout of the place. A dance floor, a bar area and room to sit inside or out.
