The fried pickles were good. The cheese fries were soggy and not worth it. I think they were out of regular cheese since I was automatically upcharged for queso without being told when ordering. It would have been nice to know ahead of time. Also, sauces aren't included each sauce is an additional dollar just added to your bill. I wasn't asked if I wanted any or what ones I would have wanted. I'm guessing it's a you've had a couple drinks you won't notice kind of thing. This place is so fun! I love the space and all the different activities you can do like karaoke, bull ride, country swing, pool or just hanging out at the tables. They have country swing lessons Wednesdays and Thursdays with live bands on the weekends. Definitely a good old fashion country bar that I would highly recommend going to or celebrating an event there! The food is good, service is great and staff is incredibly friendly. The westerner is such an interesting experience. There is a LOT going on here. They have a $15 cover charge per person. They have a bar in the middle right when you walk in and as well one in either back corner. They also have a bunch of seating areas. They have booths up against the walls. They also have larger tables for groups. I have seen signs on the tables saying they are reserved or one even said happy birthday. They have servers walking around to the tables for both food and drinks. My friend and I met a group of friends here. We got there around 7:00. Parking was really easy. The parking lot still had a lot of spots. We got a Diet Coke and a whiskey soda. Both were good. The bartender was nice. They teach the line dancing. It was really nice and easy to follow as a beginner. A lot of the dancers know the dancing really well so it is easy to follow between the announcer saying the steps and watching the people around you. They have good music. Later in the night they also do karaoke in a separate room. They also have a mechanical bull. They have an outdoor smoking section. They have a bunch of pool tables. We had a really good time dancing. I used the bathrooms in the back, and they were clean. The westerner is a good place to go to dance and let loose. Very country vibe. When we left around 9 the parking lot was way busier. It had a filled up a lot and there were lots of Uber drop offs happening as well. read more

You will either need to find someone else that knows it and is willing to take pity on you. We had a company Christmas party here. Very LOUD place. Our buffet had BBQ pulled pork, corn, mac & cheese, some other stuff. They were all good and I enjoyed it. So the food is good. They had a menu of non-alcoholic drinks, which was very nice for those of us who do not imbibe. One with lime juice and mint in Sprite, I think, was very good. This is a line dancing bar. Dance floor in the middle, tables on either side. Our company had one side reserved as well as the Karaoke room. There is a riding mechanical bull, adequately bounce house-like padding all around. I would have tried it, but I didn't see anyone else do it, so, no. Pool tables. Because line dancing is the thing here, the music was LOUD. And I mean LOUD. It was difficult to have a conversation. I think that the music could have been toned down to facilitate conversation yet be loud enough for the dancers. Or have speakers at the perimeter of the dance floor pointing inward. At any rate, I wouldn't return just based on this. My wife's ears rang for a couple hours afterward. Our small group of friends retreated to the Karaoke room in hopes that it would be better, but due to the room being smaller and enclosed, it was actually just as loud. Very fun place, though, if you are into line dancing. Everyone on the dance floor, which was filled, was having a great time. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. As a visitor to Salt Lake City, I came here for my first time during the current peak time, on a Saturday between 10 p.m. and midnight. Despite how large the parking lot is, it was so full that many had to park across the street. It was a full house. It has the most draught beers of any honky tonk I've been to. There was a live band playing country hits. The dance floor was full at all times, switching between line dances and country swing dancing. As I've noted in other cities, Gen Z tends to dominate the current country swing dance movement, thanks to the virality of Instagram and TikTok. For folks outside of that generation, it's not easy to break into that dance community without enough lessons and practice. This is not the case with two-step, which is why it's unfortunate that it has been displaced by the country swing craze. Line dance lessons are provided for four hours on Wednesdays, two hours on Fridays, and two hours on Saturdays. Two-step lessons are offered for an hour on Thursdays, followed by two hours of country swing lessons. So, it's no surprise that nobody danced two-step when I was there during the peak day and time of the week. The dance floor is narrow and long, which is somewhat less conducive to that style. Nonetheless, two-step has been around in honky-tonks for generations, so I don't think Gen Z can suppress it forever. read more

Mentally disabled publicly humiliated by management from the Westerner. Pulled from the line waiting to enter, the management staff pulled aside a well known patron known to sufferer from mental trauma. After calling out non-compliance regarding ADA regulations the Westerner had to repaint their parking lot to finally include those with disabilities by giving them a place to park. However, they then pulled out directly in front of the main entree and entire line (ask them for camera footage) and humiliated a mentally disabled patron who suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks. Forcing this trauma to now extend to walk away while the line protested. A panic attack then hit this disabled person as the manager turned his back and walked away smugly. The only thing left said was the manager telling him to never come back. Whistle blowers be ware. Those with disabilities especially need to be warned. The atmosphere died at the cruel act against completely non-violent, diplomatic review written and posted. This is the only place in SLC that offers steady line and swing dancing. Compared to other places I've lived - it's mediocre at best. The dance floor is small, often crowded with patrons that are far too drunk and unaware of their surroundings. Lots of bachelorette/bachelor and birthday parties take place here and groups become quickly obnoxious. The food is overpriced, decent enough to do the job if you've had a few drinks, and they charge a sales tax on their door fee, which is ridiculous. They recently hired a new DJ - "JD the DJ" and he's pretty good. He is personable, takes requests, and keeps the dance floor jiving all night, which is a HUGE reason I keep going. The massive smoking section and mechanical bull are probably the biggest waste of space, security struggles significantly in keeping drunk patrons with drinks in their hands off the dance floor, and they regularly book awful bands (Fox Brothers) with poor sound quality and song choices. Often times bands are so loud you can't even hear yourself think. The venue has low ceilings and poor acoustics so, if you're here on a weekend you best wear ear protection. They could revamp the place and expand the dance floor, creating better opportunity for skilled dancers to get their fix, and drunk patrons to do whatever they want to do without annoyingly stumbling into dancers, and take more careful consideration for bands they book. All in all, it does the job. I don't believe The Westerner is worth their $10 + sales tax door fee every weekend but, there's no other place in SLC so I go because dancing is an important hobby of mine to keep. If there was another local option that did better, I'd be a regular there instead of the Westerner. read more

Love the Westerner, but don't love that when I brought my service dog, the man in the front working at the Westerner said " that is not a service animal. You cannot bring the dog in here. There is no way that is a service animal because of how small she is." he also said more, but I'll leave that out. He had the worst attitude after I was asked (by the manager wonderful lady) the two questions you are allowed to ask. " is this a service animal" "what task do they perform". I was cleared and able to go into the Westerner, but the man gave me and my friends dirty looks the whole entire night and was so unprofessional. He was way too emotionally invested about my service animal. I am posting this because it is important for all staff members to know ADA law and so y'all don't get sued in the future. read more

Back in the '90's I went line dancing every Friday and Saturday night in my small town. It was THE place to be and I absolutely loved it. I knew all the dances and even taught a few times. Fast forward a couple decades and I am RUSTY. Nothing is more humbling than being out-danced by every single person on the dance floor. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but that's how it felt. I recently dusted off my boots and met a group of friends at the Westerner for a night of dancing. I interacted with several staff and every one of them were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The instructors were amazing and fun to watch after the lessons were done and they were able to let loose. Drinks and food were plentiful and kept us hydrated and fed in between dances. The mechanical bull was entertaining to watch from a distance, but I was really nervous somebody was going to hit their head-the ceiling seems so low. I've vowed to continue coming to the lessons to bring back my line dancing skills. See you there! read more

As someone who has been country line dancing & two stepping for years. I have to say this place is a disappointment. It's like going to high school but for country line dancing. Additionally it's super SUPER hot. They turn off the AC when bands aren't playing! That's absolutely ridiculous. The bathrooms (at least the ladies) was gross. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COST!!! Let's start off by saying once you pay your cover you're asked to leave a tip. If you're to decline this you get dirty looks and remarks all night from the staff. Once you get in you're treated with no respect from the bartenders. Very short and makes you feel uncomfortable even coming to the bar. I was served by a lady who in my opinion was probably the worst bartender I've ever had. Not only were the drinks watery but after leaving a 20% tip she yelled at me from across the bar saying "if you don't tip your servers more we will no longer be serving you." I'm not sure what she was expecting but in no way was her service worth any more than that 20% tip. She honestly didn't even deserve one for how she treats customers. After the night ended we were going up to close our tab and noticed 4 extra drinks on our tab! We refused to pay until she took them off and we are still dealing with this trying to get ahold of the manager. 10/10 would NOT recommend this place. Absolutely DISGUSTING CUSTOMER SERVICE. I am not sure how I didn't know about the Westerner but I had no idea this was a place. I regret that but I am so grateful for the friends that introduced me to it. Upon arrival, I parked on the North side of the building. Since I have never been here, I wasn't sure where to go for parking. Thankfully, I realized that I had parked in some kind of mechanic shop area that had a gate that had the potential to close before I was done having fun. There were literally no signs saying not to park over there so I am so glad I realized this as that gate was shut once I left later in the night. I moved my car to a parking spot that did not have the potential to be gated off and walked inside. $5 to get in isn't half bad. I think you got a bit more of a discount if you used cash but I rarely carry cash on me. The friend that invited me reserved a table which was an awesome idea as it does fill up as the night goes on. They started the lessons and I thought they were pretty good! I liked some dances more than others for sure. I did like the environment as it was very non-judgemental as you were trying to follow along and learn the dances. They had quite an array of food options. We got the veggies at one point and then also some fries. The ranch was absolute heaven in a cup. I am not sure what they are doing to the ranch in the back but it was to die for! I was highly impressed. The music was awesome. The drinks were just how you wanted them. The service was great. There was an area to step outside and catch your breath if you wanted to. I usually like to hit up this place just about every time im in Utah on a weekend night. My most recent visit was last night and the place was popping! It was a little on the warm side inside the bar which with all the people that were there and dancing that was kinda to be expected plis its not uncommon for it to get a bit on the warm side when this place gets packed especially in the summertime even when the AC system is running. While it can be a hit and miss in this situation almost every time I come here there's a fair number of beautiful women here and while some may be taken there's usually some that are not so if your a cool single guy like myself that likes country bars this is a good place to check out and maybe even mingle when your in the SLC area. I like that they have FREE mechanical bull rides, the dancefloor is big & there's plenty of places to sit and chill. This place also serves food late at night also. While they have a fair selection of beer on tap the prices are about average compared to other places in the SLC area. I did however liked the old patio area better when it wasn't so closely off from the outside air hence making it to where it wouldn't get so hot to where you can't cool off when its too warm inside the bar. At the minimum they should of at least made it so that the rooftop was retractable. Other than that this is a great country bar overall & probably one of the best in Utah read more

We could actually dance with your partner but now they've turn it into some young half naked, grinding, dancing, and they've turned every song into a fucking line dance. The food is good. But if you want good old square dancing or being able to dance with your partner, this is not the place anymore and they don't play as much country as they do crap. Came here hoping to have a good time for my birthday, but received terrible service. We ordered drinks from Harrison and he randomly threw water on a rag onto my friend and said "Fuck you guys." Apparently he wanted more than a 20% tip and felt entitled to it. Spoke to the manager and no one seemed to care. The ambiance was okay but my friend was also roofied, so please watch your drinks. Pretty cool country bar for someone who hasn't really gone to many... Was brought here for a bday party when I was feeling a lil' too lowkey for the environment. I am a huge fan of bar activities, so the fact that they have free bull rides, karaoke where you actually have a chance of singing within an hour, a huge dance floor and live music really upped this bar's game. I like how big this place is so you're not bumping into chicks running around in daisy dukes. 360 bar as well! Cover charge of $5 on a Saturday I believe. The only bummer for me is that I could not get myself to do any of these activities. Everyone on the dance floor was like choreographed, and I am not well-versed in that style. I just could not make myself go out there, especially since the lights were up. The karaoke room was pretty divey which is fine with me, but every single person sang a county song. I checked their extensive list, and it was pretty much a giant country song list I was not familiar with. I love to sing, but I couldn't bring myself to do it in this country crowd. I felt like people would just boo me off the stage if it wasn't something they wanted to hear. Note: my friend WAS booed off stage awhile ago apparently. I want to give a shout out to the staff and security here. A dear friend of mine was there dancing last night in the wheelchair he uses for mobility. A woman was upset and said that he should be dancing off to the side. Somewhere in the corner. She asked security and staff to get him moved. However, instead of moving him they let him know he was welcome to dance anywhere he wanted and to let them know if she caused further problems. I've been coming to this bar off and on infrequently for over 20 years. Tonight was by far the most disappointing time. This bar has more bartenders and bars than any other bar and I was so disappointed by all of them except Kathryn. She was the only one that had good customer service, made eye contact, and actually wanted to serve drinks to people. I didn't get the guys names but should've..I wanna say Christian or whoever was by back bathroom sucked...always too busy to even look up and help someone. It's fun if you have some friends that like country music and will show you a thing or two of how to do a proper hoedown. It's harder than it looks and with such a large dance floor you can literally go all over the place. If that doesn't sound like fun, then play some pool at their many pool tables, mount and show the free mechanical bull who's boss, and eat and drink at one of their many, many tables. Anyways, it's a pretty good time if you have good company. But yes, beware, especially if you're a lady. The guys are pretty aggressive here. Came here for the Thursday night dancing, it was a lot of fun! The dance instructor Don Clark did a great job and was patient with all the beginners and the atmosphere wasn't too loud, but near the end (around 9:30) things started picking up. I was pleasantly surprised. As the name may suggest, it really is a Cowboy themed, line-dancing, "woo-hoo"ing atmosphere. I LOVED it. But i just have to warn people, this is an experience. So emphasis on experience here. I didn't know what to wear, so I trusted in my default outfit of a dark shirt and jeans and semi-nice boots, after all this was a bar. My boots were not of the Western kind, literally, just nice boots you can get at Aldo's, I mean I don't know how you dress in these situations I'm not a cowboy. So wallflower outfit was a go. The ushers were friendly, did a weapon's check, which I had not encountered in a bar before unless it was a TSA check at the airport. But for someone who doesn't frequent these kinds of bars, I felt safe. So thank you staff. There's a great selection of beers and I opted out for the mega platter of appetizers. Bar = finger food to me, although they do have burgers if you want to make it a dine in experience. My greasy platter of perfection consisted of fried pickles, YUM, fried zucchini, YUM, fried onion rings, YUM, french fries YUM, fried mozzarella sticks, YUM, chicken wings, YUM, fried chicken tenders, YUM, all in all the "mega platter sampler" was exactly as it sounded. Greasy goodness. My favorite part is the spontaneous line dancing. I SUCK at dancing and it's just fun to stick yourself in the middle of the crowd and follow the more experienced choreographers/dancers. Riding the bull is hilarious. No, I didn't try it but it was so fun watching everyone try to conquer the bull. There was a woman and man who just rode the thing crazy. I don't know how they stuck on there, but it made me feel things. If you want to have a fun and safe place to let loose and don't mind the crowds of bachelorette parties, then this place is for you. read more
