What a wonderfully inclusive space! We took my boyfriend's 18 yo son who was looking for ways to meet other LGBTQ people his age. We were very careful to stay out of his way while we checked out the under 21 section and we were not disappointed, except for the small group singing karaoke without a DJ or MOC to keep the room lively, but maybe that's just showing my age . In addition to occasional live music, outdoor patios, multiple bars, and an interesting floor plan, there is plenty of space for those under 21-years old to party, too. This is a dynamic yet safe environment for kids (18-21) and adults alike. There's ample parking and plenty of rooms, each with a different feel. Every bartender we interacted with was courteous and professional. The bar was clean and well maintained. Bathroom was clean and stocked. Last night we attended from 9-130 am and during that period a man was rubbing his body on me while I was sitting at a table. This behavior went on for some time despite me absolute annoyance and change in body language signaling I was extremely uncomfortable. Keep in mind im a 5'5 135 lb woman and this guy is six foot tall. He was profusely drunk and looked Methed out of his mind. I eventually got sick of this dude touching me and pushed him off of me. He immediately started screaming in my face and my 3 friends had to step in and keep him away from me while he threatened to choke me and slap the shit out of me. He himself went and got security and they did absolutely nothing to remove this dangerous person from their venue and instead put me at a private table so I'd stay calm and not involve the police and have their presence on site. This place is not safe for anyone and I was absolutely shocked that the security allowed this type of violent behavior towards women. Do not attend. The security guard in question was about 6 foot tall soft Spoken kind of hippie male with blondish hair and a tall Wife with dirty blonde hair. I went on New Year's Eve, it was the most fun I've had in decades!! Upstairs were mostly younger adults and downstairs mostly older adults, around my age, everyone very friendly .. ..it's a different environment and in my opinion so much more creativity goes into it, including the music, events, ect....I'm going to try to make it to all the fetish balls this year, it should be loads of fun! read more

This place has been a staple of SLC night life since the early 90s. My parents came when they were young adults and I did the same when I was of age! I have been going over a decade now and love this place dearly. The environment is one of true acceptance where no one will judge you for how you look, dress, act, or are. It is the only club in SLC I have been to where I haven't seen a fight. The Staff is extremely friendly and is always complimenting people. The DJ downstairs has deep roots in the goth community in not just Utah, but Hawaii as well. The two DJs that operate upstairs are both amazing and so kind! Mal (Friday) plays a huge variety of music from 80s industrial to modern pop; it truly is a set of the ages. On Saturday DJ Ze Animal plays club bangers from the early 2000s to the 2010s sprinkling in some great songs from recent years as well. The vibes on both the upstairs and downstairs dancefloors are great! Any time there has been creepy dudes or problem causes the security handles it almost immediately and I have NEVER felt unsafe being here. I had a friend that had a guy creeping on her and was trying to take her home and DJ Ze Animal stepped in and confronted the problem possibly saving her from a bad situation! He even got her an uber on his own dime to make sure she got home safe! They also have a karaoke room downstairs that I know people LOVE. (Not my scene though) The girl that runs it (Spidey) is one of the kindest and funniest people I have ever met. The music starts quieter so it's easy to conversate for the first hour or so to loosen up then picks up as the night flows on. They also have three outside balconies to smoke, hang, drink, or take a break outside on. I cannot recommend this place enough. read more

Every age, every flavour, something for every personality ta savor. The last Saturday of every month is worth dressing the part for. I do not drink anymore for health reasons, but when I went through the wrong door and they confiscated my water bottle, I calmly explained my stance and they gave me a new one while explaining it was to keep people of age from giving drinks to minors. I wish there was an elevator, but the multi-floors and themes made it worth making my way up and down stairs to enjoy the karaoke, DJ's... and the interesting "private" shows. Having lived in Key West & West Palm Beach, Bellevue WA, Detroit, and parking the cahr in hahrvard yahrd... I give this place a 9.8/10 The price at the door was very reasonable... in Miami or NYC it would cost you $50-500 for entry and that wouldn't include the $35-55 parking space. Make sure you have a sober friend if you can but NO MATTER WHAT on your way back to your vehicle... have something to defend yourself because the neighborhood is not always safe even in a group. This is true anywhere, but this location is kinda away from other places. At least here in Utah everyone that's a local knows that many types of weapons are legal to carry without a license... as in you thieves better be ready to get stabbed or shot to death if you wanna mess with Utahn patrons going to or from an event. read more

Shoutout to Mr. and Mrs. J!!! Mr. J is one hell of a bouncer, And a big Shoutout to Hel and Loki!! I asked, and Aparrently Floki was Working on his Birthday!? A gem of a man, he really killed it at the club! I believe Courtney was the DJ, great music! I'll just need to bring earplugs next time.. I have sensitive ears.. and maybe they do/do not take suggestions? I saw a beautiful arrangement of vintage CD's though.. you may be able to talk to him about their Analogue collection!? Earplugs might be a money maker if they kept up their inventory on earplugs.. when I offered to buy some they were 'sold out'.. the $1 coat checks were phenomenal and cheap, I feel like being able to use a card would be more convenient though. Their Bartenders were also 'on-point'!!! Both Hel, and Loki(Floki) were stellar!!! Floki's eyeliner looked fantastic! and Hel had some seriously gorgeous jewelry!! Everyone at the club was respectful, and really had a welcoming vibe! Hope the business is doing alright, I couldn't get as many people out to the club due to covid.. Thursday Night 80's night. 21+ 5 buck cover; 18+ 7 buck cover There are several rooms here but the one worth going to is the one upstairs...where all the crazy cats and dogs to to show off their 80s attire and dance the night away to Top 40 hits from the 80s. Not my scene at all, though I totally thought it would be. I was really, rally disappointed. We were at another club listening to some DJ sets and got bored and went off in search of a new place and decided to finally give Area 51 a shot. We'd heard lots of good things, so off we went. It was supposed to be 80s night, but I saw no evidence of the 80s in decor, dress, or choice of music. In fact, some karaoke was going on and we got excited. We love karaoke. We put in our slips with some songs and sat on a comfy couch to wait for our turns. There were maybe 8 other people in the entire place. Over and hour went by and the same guy sang at least 3 times by then and we were never called up so we took the cue that we were unwanted and called it a night. Probably won't go back. read more

Great people work here. From out of town, great bar tender, great atmosphere even for a slower week night. Comparable to "The Church" in Dallas. DJ will take requests and the dance floor is creatively built for fun dancing with groups or just with your lover!! read more

Well, it was an interesting night and the crowd was too. My friends and I went on a themed Saturday night called "Cirque Du Fetish" and it was eye-opening. In one room (right when you enter) Women were in dominatrix outfits, others were chained up, and people pouring hot blue wax on each other. In the other room downstairs they played punk/goth music. And so we headed upstairs where "supposedly" the DJ plays dance/Top 40 music, WRONG! For mostly the entire night he played poor selections of dubstep/EDM and never acknowledged the music request list. However, we tried to make the best of it for what it was. One of the ladies who worked there came up to us and suggested we should try "F*** in the Graveyard." So during last call, we requested this drink and were refused. The bartender said the drink takes a long time to make, it's last call, the line is long behind you and people will not get there drinks. From a customer's perspective, my friends and I patiently waited in line for our turn and respectfully asked the bartender for the specific drink, but yet she had this excuse. We were willing to pay too, I didn't understand this. AND THE WORST...the same bartender charged me $17.50 for two cherry AMFs and later on in the night charged me $18.50 for the SAME drink and then charged me separately $5.00 for I don't know what (did she tip herself? on top of what we tipped her)?!?!?!?!?!?!? Very disappointed in the bar service. $10 cover. read more

Oh, Area 51. This night club has it's good and it's bad nights. Sadly, few are good hence the low star rating. When you go on any day that isn't Thursday {80's night} or Fetish nights there is no one there. It's pretty dead. And when you go to dance you want to go to dance. The crowd could also be considered questionable given what you're there for. It's a younger crowd since it's an 18+ place. Still, the 80's night is awesome {again for the younger crowd} and fetish night is great for people that have strong fetishes. Remember to figure out what the fetish is before you go though. Some are very cool and some aren't. read more

There are three things my husband and I like. Well, there are actually thousands of things that we like (Saag Aloo, blues guitar, two-headed kittens...) but three things that are relevant to this review. The three things we like: 1) Wide open dance floors 2) Heavy hitting industrial music 3) Dressing like vampires Area 51 makes this possible. The oft poorly attended Industrial area downstairs is perfect for the borderline violent, goth-esque moves we pull out. On a Thursday evening we had the run of the entire floor, make way for sweeping lifts and flinging back bends! On a Saturday evening there were more people participating, some even dancing, but we still had ample space to get our fetish-y festivities on. As for the upstairs, it always seemed like a bunch of kids, some dancing, some confused in their quest to look super cool, but that may just be because we're old and college kids look like eighth graders these days... I mean, if they're there then that means they like 80's music which makes anyone a WINNER! by default. Completely dissatisfied, not worth paying a cover charge to get in. I've given it multiple chances and never have came away satisfied. On their website they pride themselves in the variety of music that they have, which I feel is a drawback, because of the variety there's not the dance enjoyment. Even though it's inexpensive to enter, and the drinks are cheap, and it's open late (which is surprising for Salt Lake City), this is possibly the dingiest place I have ever had the pleasure to drink or "club" at. The divide between under 21s and over 21s is apparent, and there for law, but the inability to bring your drink to the dance floor is somewhat irritating. I've never drank at a place which looks that run down before. The outdoor area to smoke is sufficient for a drunken night, though. They do hold different themed nights, if you're in to that thing! Really interesting mix of people at Area 51. Staff is super friendly and seem like they genuinely care about their jobs. Bartenders are overworked for how many there are, but fast anyway. Three Dance floors seems like a lot for a place only bringing maybe 150 on a Saturday, but their capacity on a heavy weekend must be insane. Each dance floor has a different vibe. The place is also open Wednesday through Sunday? Completely unprecedented, but again, a nice touch. Upstairs was exactly what the reviews have said... Shady dubstep straight out of 2012, and the occasional, and I emphasize occasional, good, modern song. DJ's do no interact with the Crowd as much as I had hoped, the only time I heard him on the mic was for last call at 1AM. Downstairs DJ's seemed more in tune with the crowd's tastes, with one playing the genre of 'Teach Me How To Dougie' and 'We No Speak Americano' (3 diehards occupied this room all night, and that's all) and the other playing to the feel of 'Sweet Dreams' by the Eurythmics. All three dance floors had great light shows, and haze for days. With the right ingredients, Area 51 could be without doubt the hottest place in SLC, for every type of person to go. Surprisingly well spread ages mean you could feel comfortable from 18-81. I'm 21 and I felt completely within the demographic on the second floor. To sum it up, if you're on the edge of whether to try it, DO IT. You will not regret it. I suggest going with a few friends to have the best time, seeing as it might be a bit under-full. Some fresh talent on the top floor would be HUGE for this place. read more

I love this place because it's the only club that plays (what I consider) good music. Metal and industrial and goth downstairs, and I do enjoy that part of this club for sure. I've been going since I was 18, so it's nostalgic for sure. BUT the doorman is a giant jerk, enough that I've had to complain to his manager, which didn't really do anything. He's plays favorites, and if you're not a regular he'll take his time and even when it's free for chicks before 10, he tried to charge me on more than a few occasions, and then let the regulars in for free right behind me. Also, the drink prices change from bartender to bartender, that gets annoying. One tried to get in my face and called me a liar when I told him he was charging me 3$ more than the girl next to him. All in all, if you like 11$ pitchers, dancing to non pop and rap music, this place is OK aside from doordude. read more
