Our server, Sarah, was wonderful! She was friendly and very helpful with giving us some tips about where to go in town (we are fairly new to the area). I had eaten pizza with my daughter's first grade class here about a week prior. The pizza was so great, I wanted to go back and see the full menu! I had the bacon cheese steak burger with fries. The burger come with no condiments on it (ketchup and mustard on table), so be sure to specify if you want mayo, lettuce, etc. it was one of the best burgers I've eaten! My husband had the buffalo wings and said they were honestly the best wings he had EVER had. They're big with lots of meat (not a ton of fat) and a great Smokey flavor mixed in (they cook on wood fire grills and ovens). We will definitely be back, and soon!! read more

My wife and I frequently visited Clyde Iron when we lived in Duluth. This visit was for a 40th birthday party and the upstairs dance floor/seating are was reserved in advance knowing how popular and busy Clyde can be. To begin, great building, theme and ambiance. It's next door to the public hockey arena and during hockey season expect some pretty long waits. There is ample seating for groups if you plan in advance. We transitioned from the bar to the reserved room and we had a server for the area. There was 42 in our party and the waitress was very busy with our drink orders. They provided pizza buffet for us and all the fire backed pizzas were great! The food here is certainly tasty and well prepared. There are pizzas, burgers, pastas and great apps on the menu. If you ever find yourself in Duluth and looking for a great place for drinks and dinner I would recommend Clyde Iron. read more

Cool building. Weird first floor with indoor bocce and chess (two things that I never thought I would type in the same sentence) and no people. Giant upstairs space with tables on one side and perhaps the worst wedding singer ever on the other half. We got decent apps, cold pizza, uninspired sandwiches, and very average salads. I like the general idea, but there are way better places in Duluth to actually eat things in a reasonable amount of time. read more

We came to visit Clyde Iron Works for one reason -- a Trampled by Turtles concert. Not being from Duluth, we knew nothing about the place. But, as I would go see TBT play in a dirt hole if that's where they happened to be playing, I didn't give the venue much thought when I bought the tickets. I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. Clyde looks like one of those places that used to be an industrial warehouse a long time ago and has been refurbished to look cool and be a modern venue. If that's NOT what it was, then whoever designed it did a bang-up job of making it look that way. Big space, exposed pipes, two floors, etc. The bar and restaurant upstairs are spacious and offer a good view of the first floor level where people can play games. We didn't sample the food but what I saw looked like pretty normal to maybe a little better than normal bar fare. The beer selection was excellent, and everything we sampled was super fresh (much appreciated!). The bar staff was friendly and efficient (shout out to the dude with the Bill Murray shirt!). In the back of the venue, there was a two-floor concert hall, which is where the show was. It was spacious, had ample audio setup, a great raised stage and properly located facilities. We really thought it was a great place to see a show. Props to the staff, who were helpful, kind and professional. We had a great time! read more

So all I want to say is this venue and restaurant were absolutely amazing. The reason I'm leaving a one star review is because the bartender that was working Saturday night was probably the worst service I have ever received. She was very rude and I understand being overwhelmed. I have worked in the serving industry for 8 years now and I would never expect another server to treat her customers the way she did Saturday evening. Highly do not recommend her service to anyone. This is a REQUIRED stop every time we visit Duluth. Clyde's has the BEST WINGS! Their homemade honey chipotle is my favorite. On our last trip we had a group of 14 adults and 4 children and it was perfect. Their staff was extremely accommodating. We called ahead and our table was ready with the two high chairs and 16 seats as requested. They also allowed us to bring in homemade cupcakes for my sister's birthday, which we really appreciated! Considering that there was a hockey tournament next door, it was 12:15pm on a Saturday and we had a HUGE party, our experience was great. read more

Driving through Duluth on our way to our cabin today. Happened to notice this place. Not on the water. Not in Canal Park. Don't really care about the "popular places" to go. I care about GOOD food and GREAT service! This place has both! Outstanding Wood fired grilled wings. Truly best crispy flavorful wonderfully done wings I have ever had. Cheeseburger with very meaty bacon, extremely fresh lettuce and pepper jack cheese. Very hot fresh fries perfectly done. By the way, the wings come with your choice of ranch or blue cheese dressing. I said to the server Tom, could I please try your parmesan dill dipping sauce, usually a server gets exasperated and says that will be extra! Tom said what a good server should say, "no problem". Best dipping sauce ever by the way! Tapping that off, asked how much white Russians are and again, Tom did not get an attitude but quickly went to find out the price. My new favorite restaurant in Duluth. And thanks Tom for wonderful customer service. Just got my check; they do not put that "service charge" that so many other places are doing! French fries are crispy & light. Creamy Salmon soup could have used more chunks of salmon in it. Went with two others and tried three menu items. The smoked salmon soup was superb. The porketta was good although when served came a little cool. The Italian sausage was there own recipe and it was very good. The sandwiches were served on artisan hoagie rolls, also superb. The sandwiches were served with a choice of homemade potato chips or french fries. We opted for the house chips. The chips were perfect. Prices were according to the local market. There were two dining options lower level was order at the counter and take a number. The second level was full service. We dined on the first floor. Biked here on a brisk night and was very happy with everything. The place was busy, an event going on in the main room but headed upstairs and was immediately seated. The wait staff also handles the seating but there were plenty of them around. The dozen wings were amazing just a hint of smoke and too fried, and well portioned wings. The wife got the walleye sandwich and I had the Rueben. We both also got onion rings with our meals and they were thick and breaded appropriately. Both meals were great and sad to say we could only finish half due to being full from wings. The place is loud so not the best for a quiet night but great for drinks and typical sandwich, burgers pub food with a little upclass. read more

Up for the weekend from the cities and needed a place to eat supper. My son said let's go here as he had eaten here before and it was great. He was right. The food here was fabulous. My son and i had an order of buffalo wings. Not to spicy but great flavor. For dinner my wife had the walleye sandwich, my son had the porketta sandwich, my sister-in-law had a burger and I had the chicken pot pie. All of the food was outstanding. I really wanted to like this place because the space is totally awesome but the kitchen has to get up to speed before the buzz gets old. The downstairs is for families (or non-drinkers) but the second floor is cool. They have some decent microbrews and the help is really trying. But the food is hit or miss. Rick L. really nailed the inconsistentcies of the food in his earlier review. My wife tried the lunch pizza (of which I had a taste or two and it was wonderful) but my porchetta sub (which is rare this side of the border, Canada, that is) was woefully dry. The bartender brought me some of the cooking juices to liven it up but even that couldn't revive it ( I wasn't charged for it, bonus points). I really hope they get it together because it is one cool space, especially for DLH. They have Hairball playing this Saturday ($15! Feb. 19) so we may give them another chance. Really interesting place to visit, I just wish the food lived up to the atmosphere. It's worth the drive down a desolate Michigan Ave to eat here. This isn't the type of building you will find on Miller Hill. It's a huge factory building that wears it's heritage on it's sleeve. We found the layout a little confusing when first entering the building. You can either dine full service upstairs or there is a quick order/take out service on the main floor near the wood stoves. We dined on a Monday night when it was moderately busy due to Monday Night Football and a private party in the back. Service was still fast and we were adequately attended to. My wife had the pizza pot pie which she was disappointed in. Instead of being a complete pie crust casing, the ingredients are in a ramekin with a pizza crust piece covering the top. There wasn't enough bread to go with the "pie" and it ended up being something closer to marinara soup. I had the pepperoni and mushroom wood oven pizza which I liked but the toppings refused to stay on the crust. Pricing was about $10 for each of us and the portions are fair sized. If you are hungry I would suggest ordering a starter. We enjoyed our experience but I don't see myself going back down Michigan Avenue anytime soon. Our next visit will most likely be to take someone else with and show them the awesome aesthetics. P.S. They also have an indoor boccie court. Props. P.S.S. They were great about substituting a salad for fries and leaving off the buns. The food was very good and service was good too. Can't wait to take my husband or maybe meet some friends. Good: The building! They did a great job remodeling this building for a restaurant/bar/event venue. By the looks of it, it has soooo much potential. The back event room is huge and can do anything. Friends booked a wedding reception and the room was awesome. Plenty for tables, dancing and live band. Bad: The food and service! 4 trips to Clyde Iron Works and every time they have missed something in my order. Last time we ordered 6 wings, received 5. How do you do that?? Now, they have been willing to fix every time, but come on. Each time we ate upstairs and this means someone had to run upstairs to bring me one chicken wing. How obnoxious. The menu is weak (small) and the food they offer is mediocre, except the cheese cake which was terrific. At the wedding party pizza was served. There was a decent selection, but there was either too much crust or the crusts were really heavy. Everybody just ended up leaving the crust sections at the buffet table. However, we still find ourselves meeting friends here who are fascinated with the large old building. We will soon run out of friends that have not dined here and I wonder if we'll ever return. Awful customer service! Went on a Saturday at 5pm. Place was dead! Maybe 3 tables had people. Asked for a table for 4 adults and 4 kids. Hostess looked at her table map forever... Then says do you have reservations, nope! Well, I'll have to split your party up into 2 high top tables. Nope, ain't happening with toddlers! I asked why we couldn't be seated downstairs? She stated no server, we said we'd share?! She didn't budge! We could see many tables needed to be bussed. My husband and I called our other party and decided to leave! Great food. My friends and I ate a large quantity of food here the other night. Put us all in a food coma. Only qualms was that they're fried ravioli barely had any cheese. But if you love blue cheese it was so good I had to finish mine by itself with a spoon! I think they make it there, so good. Although I am indeed a nacho connoisseur, I didn't order any nachos here. Stopped here on an impromptu trip to Duluth tonight after seeing another review raving about the Porketta. I had Porketta for the first time when I was a kid visiting Grand Rapids. The seasoning is rich and intense and I spent years looking for it in Chicago, not realizing it was a unique to the Northern states. This was my chance. The restaurant is located in an older industrial part of town. We walked in and I was initially confused at what was happening. Then seating is upstairs but it wasn't clear right away. Our server was friendly and took care of is quickly. He made a suggestion of an on point Bent Paddle Black Ale and we ordered the beer batter onion rings. Wanted to try the potato balls but they weren't available. Bummer! The onion ring batter was crunchy and had the slight spice of black pepper. The Porketta sandwich was everything I could hope for. We also got the Monte Cristio - which was breaded in graham crackers with a side of raspberry cream cheese for dipping. I would gladly revisit this spot when I am in town! Came in with no reservation but they had one table left so we got it. Ordered and had our food in 23 minutes, even though there was a full house, wedding and a groom's meal going on that night. Our server was Katie and she was great-recommended sauce on the side for our picky eater and the whole experience was stress free. And the food. When they were building the restaurant, I was very excited with the size and historical outline of the restaurant. At one time Clyde! was a state-of-the-art manufacturer, sadly the current restaurant does not live up to its past. I have been to the restaurant half of dozen times and this is my first two star review. When they say traditional food,they mean it. A one page menu that is so generic, you flip it over expecting the real menu. The food taste like any other traditional American Restaurant. I know places in Duluth with the same dish but with more flavor. I did have the fried ravioli and wood-oven cheesecake, they were good but not good enough for my taste buds to scream unique. The service has been absolutely horrible whether it is a busy or slow night. Too little wait staff.My order has only been right once. I really hope that they realize that they could carve a unique niche in Duluth. Food that is there own style like their building,having wait staff that checks in more than twice. There is so much potential for this place to be legen...keep waiting for it.... First off the food was delicious. So why only 3 stars? Because the service was not up to par. My mother ordered something off the menu and was promptly told they didn't have that item. Service was rude and very slow. We were never asked if we would like refills or were checked on before receiving food or after. I live in the Twin Cities but work up near Duluth during the weekdays, and often drive by this place (usually having a quick and amazing meal at the Duluth Grill). I finally decided to give the Clyde a try and really wanted to like this place. The layout when you walk in is a bit odd, with a huge open area and a host stand sitting in the middle of nowhere unattended; I decided to take initiative and walk upstairs to the bar after twiddling my thumbs for a few minutes and took a seat at a very nice looking (albeit mostly empty) bar with what appeared to be a fine selection of whiskies (which is the only thing I was looking at). I sat for about 10 minutes and finally managed to flag down the bartender, who was a chipper young fellow that made me a fair Manhattan, although it tasted like about a three-quarter ounce pour. This fellow gave me a lengthy run down of the menu, although he didn't seem too interested in what I liked or was looking for. For dinner I ordered a 'bowl' of soup (salmon chowder) which was good but I recall being 7 or 8 dollars and came in a serving dish smaller than the conventional soup 'cup' in most restaurants; the 'cup' must be served in a ramekin dish I imagine. Following the soup I was intent on ordering a flat iron steak from the menu which sounded very appealing, but the same bartender informed me that due to a 'lack of sales' the entrees would soon be going off the menu and they may not have any of these items (much less the steak) and he proceeded to push the chicken wings on me for the third time. I ultimately decided to order a veggie pizza and specifically requested marinara sauce on it. The pizza came out quickly, which I deducted was because somebody must have thrown some Pillsbury ready dough in a Microwave and cut up a few veggies raw and threw them on there with a sprinkling of goat cheese and some leftover dried tomato sauce scrapings from the bottom of a pot. While I wolfed down this easy-bake oven excuse of a 'pizza' because I was famished, this pizza was really embarrassing. Best of all the bartender showed up about two thirds through and asked me how it was, and I mentioned a plate, napkins, and silverware would be appreciated. My impression from the portioning and quality is this a place that seems to be on the way out, and probably should be with all the fantastic eating establishments in Duluth. It pains me to say this, but you would be much better off to avoid wasting your time and money at this lackluster establishment. read more
