I didn't realize until after Jamie W and I came here that the original and now closed location was on Polk St across the bay in San Francisco. Yes, I tried it over a dozen years ago and have little recollection of my dining experience (review: https://yelp.to/8rBLt3xnAB). Probably just as well because this was our first time at this location. We came on a Saturday afternoon looking for a late lunch. It was a nice space with interesting decorating touches like a collage of vintage photos and magazine clippings in a ribbon-like pattern on the gray wall (Photo 6). The place was almost empty, which allowed us to take the corner table next to the window. The menu looked like a slightly upmarket take on Vietnamese fare. We decided to share a couple of dishes since we had tentative dinner plans later. We ordered the $17 Shrimp Papaya Salad, a decent enough mix of green papaya and carrots in decorative latticed slices, crispy allium, herbs, and six poached shrimp, drenched in a spicy fish sauce vinaigrette and topped with peanuts and Thai basil (Photo 9). Tasty but a bit bland and wet. We then shared the $25 Fried Chicken characterized as chicken tempura, but the execution was lacking. It consisted of slices of thigh meat covered in a rather moist coating. There was fermented soy aioli and a side of pickled daikon, carrot and cabbage slaw in miso soy dressing (Photo 10). Even though the thigh meat was welcome, the dish didn't quite hang together. At the same time, the ingredients were fresh, and frankly other menu options might've improved our satisfaction. Perhaps another time. This place is a GEM in Oakland. THE best soups - we've had them all. They're all delicious and straight up have healing powers. The Shrimp salads and shrimp spring rolls are AMAZING - so fresh and delicious. The space and design (created by the owner) is awesome, And our favorite JINH is part server, part hostess and part Goddess! She's sooo sweet and nice to my parents!!! Their smoothie/drinks are amazing. I love this place. You'll love this place

Came here for Valentine's Day expecting to indulge and try out the Chef Bar or Chef Table experience but those were not available at the time. We were informed there may be a Pri-fixe menu beforehand but that was not available that day either. We had no issues with that, but it would be preferable if they made sure they are able to offer the experiences that are available on the website. We ordered the wicked buns, Saigon give you wings, garlic noodle and the bo luc lac. The food was out very quickly. Wicked Buns: The wicked buns were quite good. Truly cannot go wrong with some fried bao buns! Chicken Wings: We really enjoyed the chicken wings as well. The fish sauce gives the wings a nice sweetness and makes them quite addicting. Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. The drinks were quite fairly priced as well which I really appreciated. Overall, I think the portion sizes can be a little small for the price, but the food is delicious and great. The drinks are also great and I would definitely come back for them!

I've been wanting to try this place for a while so I decided to make reservations for my sister's birthday. We came here for brunch with reservations and we were the first ones in the restaurant. Always good. We started off with bottomless mimosas and they are super generous with their bottomless. I love me a generous restaurant. They give you these delicious flavors and sets the carafe at the table. The interior is beautifully decorated and the walls are adorned with pictures of the family in Vietnam. I love the open space concept. We ordered appetizers and main dishes. -Roti and curry dip 5/5 -crispy rolls 4/5 -Pho 4/5 -Grilled pork noodle bowl 4/5 -Bo Ne 4/5 -Shrimp papaya salad 3/5 Overall I had a great experience. The food was good, but I think it is "fancy" Vietnamese food, so the deep, rich flavors weren't all there. I'm thinking of the pho joints I visit, where the service isn't there, the that food will always bring me back. Our server was attentive and this place is worth a try! I'll have to come back for dinner.

I've been wanting to try Co Nam for the longest time! While in the Temescal District for an event, we ended up swinging through for a quick bite. I already can't wait to come back for brunch and cocktails! We ordered a few brews and the garlic noodles with chicken (usually served with prawns), and the mochi dumplings. We sat at the bar and watched a few rounds of absolutely beautiful and unique cocktails being made. The ingredients, preparation, and presentation represented such a thoughtful approach and super cool sipping experience for the guest. Very Instagrammable. The mochi dumplings were unlike anything I've ever seen or tasted. A fun foodie fusion! Full of flavor, texture, and super tasty. The garlic noodles were delish also ~ again, packed with bold flavors and perfectly grilled meat. The service was excellent, and it seemed to be the hoppin' spot. Pricing reasonable, street parking available, but ride-share or BART may be best pending where you're coming from. Looking forward to round 2 and enjoying a deeper dive into their menu.

I went here to celebrate my friends 50th Birthday. The menu he chose was the Chef's Table which uses locally sourced ingredients. The items are prepared especially individually and served immediately. We dined on Hokkaido Scallops, Salmon Tartare, and Fresh Somen Noodles to name a few. The food was fresh and absolute culinary delights. Our experience did not end there. We drank wine, champagne, and various craft cocktails. And ended with a mango custard. It was a special day of celebration. The owner V was gracious and welcoming. Her husband and daughter arrived later. Her daughter made a handwritten card for the birthday boy. The restaurant has plenty of light with great modern decor. All in all it was a great experience.

food and drinks r incredible. i only wish, as a viet person, they use the vietnamese names for dishes-- what is a mochi dumpling? that's banh bot loc! makes me sad to see non-viets calling some of our best dishes by a new name catered to their ignorance.

Co Nam took me by surprise and now I can't get enough! We sat at the bar for our late night meal and were intrigued by the decor and menu. It was also really fun to sit at the bar, you could watch them make your drinks and you can see a bit of the kitchen. It makes it a great experience. The chicken wings were my favorite. Perfectly crispy, a nice sticky sauce, and a WHOLE wing!!! A rare find nowadays. The papaya salad was more than a dish, it was a work of art. Their plating in general is really on point. The papaya salad will definitely be part of my monthly takeout rotation.

Everything tasted fine, pretty average. Nothing really stood out. But it was a fine place! The prices felt too expensive for the taste and experience. Unfortunately overall, it was fine and just okay. I think the photos looked better than the actual taste. Service was fine, we didn't get checked on ever. But no staff was rude or ignored us.

Super great happy hour deals! The oysters were so delicious that we ended up getting two servings. The fried chicken was also fried to perfection - crispy skin with super tender meat. It was paired with a simple fish sauce that gave the chicken a pleasant umami flavor. The drinks were decent, but did lack a bit of depth and complexity. I'd like to try some of their other food and drinks to see if there are other options that I would enjoy more.

Great service! Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The food was amazing and tastes so good. It wasn't too salty either! I also really liked the Vietnamese coffee, strong, just how I like it.

5 stars for the Chef Experience... Jeff and the whole staff were wonderfully attentive. You can tell they care about their craft. We had a several-course dinner with cocktail pairings. Too many to list! Our favorite dishes included the fried oyster, roti with curry sauce, pho dumplings and the fried banana for dessert. Our favorite drinks included the pillow talk, Maldives and an off menu old fashioned. Thank you all for a wonderful evening.

Hi, I have a giftcard from your sf location and I haven't used it. Is there anyway to use it in your Oakland location?

Now that outdoor dining has resumed are bottomless mimosas back? If so, what are the hours that it's offered? Thank you

Hi Mathew. We’re open for outdoor dining weather permitting. Currently offering Sat for bottomless 11-3pm. Once the weather improve we’ll staff up and add Sunday.

We noticed two open seats at the bar and asked if we could sit there. She said the bar was first come, first serve..yet moments later, she seated two walk-ins who had been behind us in line at those exact seats. So been living in Oakland for going on 15 years now. I'm not what you would call a "bar" person. I…read moretend to enjoy my cocktails, wine, and beer in the cozy confines of my own home. That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers.
