Came here for dinner at 7pm and quite a few dishes had already ran out (tea eggs and Banh Bot Loc). It wasn't that busy and still early, didn't expect it to be out so soon. Each dish came out were very small portions. The flavors were pretty good, but when you pay the price that you pay for 2 sticks per order, feels a bit of a rip off. I've been to many countries in Asia (including Vietnam - numerous of times) and "streetfood" do not consists of 2 sticks per order. It was super smokey when we arrived, the server (bald guy) apologized because due to the weather they couldn't keep the doors open. Poor ventilation? The smoke was even worst than a Korean BBQ place. I ordered the following: - Shrimp balls - Chicken Hearts - Vermicelli with Five Spices Chicken (nuoc mam- fish sauce wasn't enough or it was just not flavorful, could barely taste it) - Bo La Lot (beef wrapped in a leaf) We could get all these from a more authentic Vietnamese restaurant for cheaper. read more

I've wanted to try this place since it opened. Atmosphere: it's a small restaurant, we sat at the bar. They were playing a basketball game on projection on the walll. Overall I liked the atmosphere. Drinks: I had the Tokyo Old Fashioned and it was really good. I saw some of the other drinks the bartender was making and they all looked delicious and beautiful. Food: we both ordered from the prefix menu. I got the papaya salad, garlic noodles and creme brûlée. Overall everything was really good. I wanted to try the crispy chicken skin, but they were out. Heart-warming Vietnamese across the street from MacArthur BART station. Co Nam replaces the grimy pizza spot that formerly graced the corner of Telegraph and 40th. After four-months of comprehensive renovations, the transformation is remarkable. You would never believe that this used to be a mob front slash hell mouth. Owner Trung wouldn't let on if he found any dead bodies in the walls, but he walked us through the eclectic menu. The dishes will rotate frequently and feature a lot of "homestyle" Vietnamese cooking. We housed Chicken Skewers, Chicken Karaage, Veggie Skewers, and Steamed Pork Buns. We also tried the owner's two current faves: Nem Nuong, really savory pork sausage skewers with a bomb-ass secret dipping sauce and Bo La Lot, grilled beef wrapped in betel leaf with anchovy sauce. The Bo La Lot come three to a plate and have a sharp fermented kick--Trung described it as "pungent." Great menu for sharing with friends. Our two couple group was satisfied with 9 dishes total. Oh and Trung was nice enough to comp some dishes when they took a while to come out. Beer and wine only, for now. We will be back. read more

Great new space along Telegraph serving up some dynamite fresh Vietnamese fare. I stopped in on a Thursday afternoon and grabbed a nice spot at the bar in full view of the kitchen. The lunch menu is small but has some solid choices. I went with a "lunch special" build your own bowl with vermicelli noodles, grilled pork, and the fried roll add on. It was a nice portion and served up very quick and fresh. The pork was very flavorful with a perfect char. Next time, I'd probably ask for some hot sauce of some kind to give it some kick, but as-is it was pretty solid. They're just getting started out, so still staffing up and finding their way. Next time, I'd like to try their pho. It looks like a more expanded menu at dinner. Price point is a bit more SF than Oakland ($20 for what I described above), but in line with quality and vibe. Everything on the menu is not only beautifully presented but as delicious as it gets. The wine selection is also reasonably priced and well-chosen. I've had both cabs and a red blend and they pair really well, even w seafood. Most dishes are on the smaller side (even the entrees) and perfect for sharing among 2-3 people. The menu is constantly rotating so don't miss out! I've loved everything I've tried, you really can't go wrong--the kitchen's flavors are balanced with a perfect mix of savory, sweet, umami. No singular flavor overpowers the dish. There are so many details in the garnish of every dish--I was tempted to lick every plate clean! The most memorable dishes I've had are the shishito peppers (always a good idea), fish curry, braised pork ribs (previous special--please bring it back!), calamari salad, papaya salad, shaken beef, prawns w noodles in the most perfect broth--the prawns were so crunchy I even ate the antennae and shell! I usually don't like sweets but the chocolate mousse (?) dessert was soooooo yum. If Trung is in (usually behind the bar), ask him for reccs and the specials. The photos on the walls are of his family so it's definitely worth sitting at the bar and talking to him. Also he has a really good liquor selection but it's not on the menu so just ask if you want to try something new. Came here for brunch with a friend and we shared some oysters, crispy chicken rolls, and the shrimp fried rice. My friend had a cocktail and I had the Fieldwork draft beer. All of it was terrific, and I wish we'd had more people with us so we could have tried more dishes! Looking forward to going back. Excellent. We were delighted by the outdoor seating along 40th Street. There are aa couple small tables just on the sidewalk on the Telegraph side. We had the Bún Thịt Nướng Chả Giò (Grilled Pork Noodle Bowl) and the flank steak Pho. Both delicious. The salad with the noodle bowl was much better than one usually gets with the hole I. This bar is great for grabbing a drink (safely) with friends! Tables are laid out next to the restaurant, and this place has an ample selection of finger foods and meal foods. Outdoor seating is a little inconvenient due to the constant traffic next to the tables. I came here with my friend for lunch. The service was a little longer than what we expected (took about 30 minutes for 3 items to come to the table and another 30 minute wait for the bill), but the food was great and not pricy at all. We ordered the papaya salad, pho, and burger. The food was good and had sizable portions. Definitely try supporting your local businesses however you can! read more

Alas, was promised to be a very nice Vietnamese meal turned out to be a pretty tasteless American version of Vietnamese food. I am giving it two stars because the setting with the bar is pretty pleasant. Also a great location. The appetizers including the fried rolls and steamed buns were pretty good. It led us to expect something better. But then came the strangely cut papaya salad that had no taste. Anyone who has had papaya salad knows it should be sour and spicy and sweet. This had nothing. The ribs were coated in caramel glop. The curry was watery and tasted only of bell peppers. Nothing else. I won't even mention the other dishes. Service was bizarre. Let's leave it at that! I have literally never written a Yelp review in my life, but my wife and I had an incredible meal last here night, and it's insane to me that this place has 3.5 stars. We previously had a couple of delicious small bites from Co Nam sitting outside at a Temescal street fair sometime in 2021, but this was our first time inside and/or for a full dinner. Really fun ambiance/decor, and oh. my. god. the restaurant week menu was sensational. Every single dish was a winner. The ceviche was crazy flavorful. The pomelo salad served on top of a sesame cracker was an ingenious combination of textures. The shaking beef was perfectly cooked and maybe our favorite dish of the evening, but don't sleep on the fried chicken which had the ideal combo of outer crisp + inner tenderness. Both desserts were awesome. If you're looking around for restaurant week options, I strongly recommend going to Co Nam. We're already looking forward to coming back to check out their other offerings. read more

This is actually 2 reviews, for visits a month apart, one dinner and one brunch. The dinner was excellent (4-5 stars); the brunch was awful (1-2 stars). Dinner was on a fairly busy Saturday night. We had a table at first, then asked to move to the bar so we could watch the man making drinks. The drinks themselves were very fine (Mexico Street Fashioned, Tokyo Street Fashioned, lemon drop), and the very personable bartender had a dry ice show that was great fun, complemented by nice touches like the restaurant's brand on the ice cube. The food was also very tasty and creative (spring rolls, sesame ribs, grilled pork vermicelli, fish claypot). Service was attentive and efficient. All in all, a great experience that made us want to go back. A month later, we (2 of us) were back for weekend brunch, and it was a debacle. There was one other table seated when we got there (4 people); and when we left almost an hour later, only one more person had come in, plus two pick-up orders -- it was NOT a busy morning. The Vietnamese coffee (the only coffee they have) was okay; same for the hot tea. The Bloody Mary order didn't come and didn't come, and eventually the server said they were waiting to get some tomato juice. Seriously, not able to make a Bloody Mary for a weekend brunch? Yikes. I cancelled the drink order (the idea is to have the cocktail before the food), though after a while we saw the owner leave the kitchen to go across the street to a small grocery store and come back with a bottle of tomato juice. When the server brought the Bloody Mary to our table, I pointed out that I had said cancel the drink order (assuming our food was almost ready); she said she had misheard me, which was understandable because the music was very loud for Sunday morning. She took the drink away (a smart server and owner would have comped it, to preserve the good will). We had ordered the pork vermicelli and shrimp grits. The vermicelli came out after about a half hour (no idea what the kitchen was doing all that time because only one food dish had come out to the other table), and it was very good. But after another 20 minutes the server came to the table to tell us that the shrimp grits would be out "soon". At that point we asked for a to-go container for the vermicelli, and cancelled the shrimp grits. The server got a decent tip, because most of the problems weren't her fault, but she has a whole lot of room for improvement. I have no idea why things went so wrong at brunch. We really want to like the place because it's one-of-a-kind. But this was just unreasonably bad all around. Sad to say, we won't be back. read more

I wanted to share my experience to help you avoid experiencing the same thing. The short version: 3 of the 4 total shrimp on my salad were still raw in places, so my insides are not happy and the service was one of the worst we've ever experienced. My wife and I ordered two iced coffees, a grilled shrimp salad, and a banh mi. The only good thing about the meal was the banh mi, which was just good, not great. The service was awful. The coffees took at least 15 minutes to arrive at the table and the banh mi never arrived. The server did not come to check on us so after much waiting (the salad was slowly eaten up by this point) we had to go in to ask. They "missed" placing the order apparently; you'd think the server would notice only delivering one meal and maybe check on the second one, or perhaps come out to see how the meal is going...but our meal and our presence both seemed to be completely forgotten. $17 for a shrimp salad with only 4 shrimp seems a bit steep as it was mostly lettuce. And if shrimp are gray inside, that means they are not cooked. I have never given 1-star before, but it feels fair to award this given the above issues with improper food preparation and incompetent serving. read more

Co Nam excels at the quality and production of each dish I've tried at this restaurant. Rather than overpopulating the menu, Co Nam has maintained a smaller but diverse menu to highlight variety and depth of flavor in its Vietnamese dishes. Initially drawn in by it's warm lighting and beautiful bar, I found myself having one of the most satiating meals I'd had in ages the first time I went to Co Nam. I have since come back almost monthly and often bring numerous friends to try their steamed buns (which can be made vegan by replacing pork belly with a beautifully braised tofu), bún riêu, basa fish claypot, and incredible drinks. The steamed buns are tender and bursting with fresh herbs and pickled veggies. The bún riêu is deeply flavorful and warming to the bones. The basa fish claypot comes out steaming with richly marinated morsels that melt in your mouth. The drink I ordered, the Post, comes in a glass lantern filled with a thick fog of infused cucumber mist. Each time I've gone, the service has been excellent, with attentive and kind hosts. This restaurant is certainly worth the stop. read more

I love Vietnamese food, but this place doesn't do it well. They overcharge you for the food, and they mispronounce the food (called a banh mi, a "bawn me"), which just signifies general lack of knowledge of the type of food they're serving. For the record, I had their beef pho which was weak. It's not often I have pho which is that awful. Changing from a 2-star to a 1-star after the owners sassy response. For the record, my girlfriend is Vietnamese and I've been learning Vietnamese. Reader, if you decide to still go, enjoy eating the awful food when you go. There are plenty of other more authentic, cheaper, and much more tasty restaurants. Follow up: the owner dm'd me after this review crying because he can't stand a little bit of criticism. I really want to give 5 star because the owner is cool. The sandwiches had great protein but really needed more pickled vegetables. We tried a new noodle dish and it sounded like it would be a hot noodle dish and it was more like a vermicelli salad with a sauce that was not Vietnamese flavor at all. Since it was our first time there, it would have been better to steer us to their main stays that have been proven over time, not a brand new dish that just was not good. I had made a reservation, but after some confusion when I walked in, I realize that I had made it for the wrong day. They were completely gracious, moved some things around, I made space for us and we are. Everything was absolutely in the office, I have so does total thought and care. I am vegan, and they made particularly sure to check in and make sure that all the dishes were suitable. We had the roti, the vegan pho, the papaya salad, fresh rolls, a curry, and crispy rolls. It was a lot of food, and everything was so good that we ate every single bite. There was literally nothing left. Will absolutely be back! read more
