Coa De Jima is now my favorite of the Coa Trilogy. Really, really good food and their signature service. However, it's the toned down ambience that does it for me. Barbecoa is so overwhelming, and over the top. I can't really enjoy myself there because it's too much. Too loud, too many over the top decorations, the meat market vibe. Coa De Jima, especially earlier in the evening is just right. Still very upscale, but much more manageable. Highly recommended and looking forward to eating there again very soon. read more

A Mezcal based drink with honey as a garnish. Excellent! We had ceviche and the pork carnitas. Both are delicious. Gave Coa De Jima a try to see what the rave was about! The atmosphere was nice and vibey.. Our server was kind. Service was great. For starters we ordered margaritas and guacamole with tortilla chips. Seeing the menu caught me off guard, it's a limited menu with not many options. I ordered the dish "Puerto Nuevo Lobster" included two Maine lobster tails, sides that come with cilantro rice and black beans. Trying the rice was disappointing NO flavor whatsoever. The lobster tails were fishy and rubber like was not my favorite! We also ordered Ceviche came with tortilla chips, I wouldn't call this authentic Mexican food. Our staff was young, but [as expected] very friendly and welcoming. Server Jared and Server Assistant Chris were attentive and helpful with questions. Mom had the Chilaquiles with carnitas and I had the Arroz Vegetariano (separate Veggie menu). Mom's was great and the pork was NOT fatty, like at most places. My Arroz was FANTASTIC! Coa De Jima is easily in my top five places to eat in the entire Treasure Valley. The decor is funky and eclectic and from the moment you walk in the service is top notch. On top of the great decor and attentive staff, the food is absolutely fantastic. I ordered the Octopus Con Achiote ($20) as an appetizer which was super fresh and had a nice char which complimented my drink the Winnie De Pooh which was sweet and refreshing. I still think about that drink and can't wait until I get my hands on another! The star of the night was 'La Tablita' which is an entree for two and it was the perfect amount. La Tablita consisted of Maine lobster tail, grilled prawns, chicken, beans, rice, guacamole and more. It felt like a feast of samplers and we didn't have room for dessert which is my only regret. Was super excited to try this place out since we love Barbacoa. They have a happy hour of buy one get one but none of their specialty cocktails are on that so I was pretty disappointed about that since I was very interested in that menu and they allow it at the other location. Hubby got the pork chop and it was very good. I got the lobster enchiladas. Not a lot of lobster and the lobster was a bit over cooked. Ok so we just got home from here..... the food was great, our server Hanna was excellent, buttttt...... we we're the only minority couple in there and I don't know if it had anything to do with that but all the busboys and the floor manager were going to every other table constantly picking empty glasses asking how everything was going and not once came to our table, our waitress had to be the one removing all the empty stuff and I was starting to really pay attention to all that as the evening went on.. it really bothered me because we spent a lot money there.... My wife love seafood and will gravitate towards that on any occasion. They had a seafood pasta special tonight that was phenomenal. It had lobster, big shrimp, clams, scallops, fish, octopus and fresh pasta. My wife is Italian and knows good pasta and fresh seafood. She rated it excellent. I had the carne asada with rice, beans and fresh corn tortillas. The tortillas were served on a hot salt plate that kept them warm and they kept the tortillas coming. My true rating of this restaurant would be a 3.5 but a 3 felt too harsh so 4 it is! This restaurant is located right in the midst of Boises bar/club scene which makes for very good people watching and a great place to start a night of drinking. They have an extensive drink menu that is especially exciting for tequila drinkers like myself & my partner so we loved trying out new things. We ordered De Buddha which was my favorite, Winnie De Pooh which my partner loved, a Paloma, and a drink with coconut milk (can't remember the name) that was wayyy too sweet. For an appetizer, we shared the Mexican seafood cóctel. The spicy tomato sauce had an addictive taste and the addition of cucumbers and onions to this cóctel was a nice touch. The only downside on this dish that I would say is that there was only one piece of crab in the whole thing. I felt like for $22 there could've been more crab. For entrees, we tried the birria taco special which was good but not as good as a $12 plate of birria from a taco truck and the sea bass a la veracruzana which was excellent. All in all, we thought this was a good meal but for the price not sure it was 100% worth it. A pretty good experience: reasonable prices, decent food, and service. A place I would return but wouldn't necessarily recommend. Food Good selection, cohesive, logical. Food portions are Olive Garden large which is a nice surprise. Presentations are a little over the top and taste is good, not great. Chicken Fajitas were a grease ball with chipotle in adobo layered on heavy. Black beans were watery with no taste. Carnitas were tender but served on a bone which is unneeded frill. Green salsa was great and guac was fun. Service Slow but thorough. Lots of servers/bartenders/helpers and one of those sparkler ice creams coming out every 10 minutes. Our server was pleasant though a little slow to get back with us to deliver entrees and the final bill. I still tipped 20%+ because I thought it was good service. Ambience A fun, downtown scene of goofy stuff on the wall and a hidden bathroom hallway. Hint: it's through the painting. Eclectic and consistent. Overall, a fun night out. Went on a 'date night' and was very impressed. The interior bar area was gorgeous! Service was well trained and very sociable. We felt very comfortable and our serviced merry did a great job helping us navigate the menu. We planned for dinner so tried a few entrees (which are expensive) and it felt like a top-end fajita night. Very tasty, but I'd almost recommend planning to pick and choose apps for a future trip. Cocktail menu was very good and creative. We did try the Bloody Mary/beer drink which has recommended, but it wasn't great (for us). That was really the only miss of the evening and it's not a ding as we chatted about it with the server first and knew it was a risk prior to ordering. High recommend for happy hour. Very rare that I give 5 stars but totally earned at Coa de Jima for a late day lunch. First of all the artwork and design of the restaurant is mind blowing. Delighted that the food and service matched. Sarah was our server and she could not have been more attentive. We only had the guacamole which was absolutely perfect, loved the tang of the lime and the chips were some of the best homemade chips I've ever tasted. We also tried the halibut tacos and they were outstanding as well. Bartender really knew how to make stunning cocktails. We were here all the way from our home in Hawaii to find snow, colder weather and ski. I've dreamed about what life would be like if we had a Coa de Jima near us! On 10/25/21, I went with a couple of friends to try Coa de Jima in Boise, which offers Mexican fine dining reminiscent of the Mexican Riviera. Coa de Jima is a sister restaurant to Barbacoa. The name is Spanish for "a hoe for harvesting." Specifically, the type of hoe that is used to harvest agave, which tequila is made from. We started by sharing a couple of appetizers: Calamari ($16) - Dusted in spicy masa. Served with salsa Verde and habanero BBQ sauce. Our calamari did not appear or taste as though it had been dusted in spicy masa, but it was excellent. We enjoyed both of the dipping sauces, but the most interesting of the two was the habanero BBQ sauce. While not as spicy as I would have expected, it had a good flavor. Duck Carnitas Quesadilla ($15) - Duck confit and our proprietary cheese blend. Served with pasilla sauce and guacamole. I choose this appetizer because 15 years ago, I had a wonderful Duck and Jack Quesadilla (red chili duck confit with dry aged jack cheese and charred tomatillo salsa) at Madoka on Bainbridge Island, where it was a signature dish. In all that time, I've never seen it on another menu. Although this quesadilla had different ingredients, it was every bit as good. We each ordered an entrée: Maine Lobster Enchiladas ($38) - Spinach, poblano chilies in our proprietary cheese blend. Served in salsa Verde, with cilantro rice and black beans. I choose this entrée because it was one of the more unique items on the menu. Though the enchiladas did not have as much lobster as expected, it had a good flavor, as did the rice and beans. Chilean Sea Bass a La Veracruzana ($39) - Pan seared Chilean Sea Bass served with onions, tomatoes, green onions, capers and garlic in a tomato broth. Presented over cilantro rice. There's only one other restaurant in town that serves this dish, but they use frozen red snapper. It was a nice sized piece of fish, beautifully presented. MU enjoyed it. Milanese De Filete De Res ($39) - Pan fried breaded beef tenderloin. Topped with Asadero cheese and chipotle pepper. Served over chipotle angel hair pasta. CF Would have preferred the beef tenderloin to be unbreaded, but enjoyed the dish. We shared a dessert: Tres Leches ($14) - A dense, moist three milks cake with cajeta. Served with a fennel almond crunch and honey ice cream. This was a very refined and creative version of a traditional Latin dessert. It was outstanding! In addition to wonderfully creative food and drink menus, Coa de Jima provides excellent service and wonderful ambience. Highly Recommended!!! read more

Came here for breakfast/brunch on a Saturday and was greeted warmly at the door by Ethan, who ended up being our server. Stellar service from him! We had the steak and eggs (medium rare and over medium, respectively), as well as the Chorizo Con Papas Omelette. Steak and Eggs: The NY strip was very under-seasoned and while medium rare, didn't have much of a sear. The eggs were just fine and the rice accompaniment was fine. Chorizo Con Papas Omelette: Huuuge portion size. Lots of chorizo and potato wedges. The flavors were good. We had a strawberry mojito and Michelada. The mojito was more strawberry mint salad and the Michelada had ice in it... a no-no when the Modelo is coming from the tap (and just don't put ice in beer in general!). The ambiance was quiet. Definitely an interesting place but not sure I would go back. Mexican food is difficult to make elegant/fancy and that is what it seemed this restaurant aimed for. read more

I longed for a pinch of salt and some char on the meat. Also wish there was a corn tortilla option and a bit more white onion in the pico. Will DEFINITELY order this again. Milanesa de filete de res My husband had this. Wow! This was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender, the pasta was perfect and it reminded me of an excellent chicken Parmesan but in a fantastic Mexican version. I will order this when we go back. Overall we were super impressed and really happy to have good Mexican food close to home. Having lived in SoCal for 13 years, makes one long for excellent Mexican food and this foots the bill! They have an excellent Buy one Get One, on drinks during Happy Hour 4-6pm and late night noshes for the after dark crowd which we can't wait to go back and try, open til 1am! read more

Coming from Austin, I have somewhat high expectations. But maybe I'm just not well traveled? Regardless, this place was freakin' awesome. Absolutely delicious drinks. Stellar service that goes above and beyond. Justin SHOWED OUT. 10/10. He made a celebratory dinner so special and we can't thank him enough. This is one of the coolest restaurants I've been to. I won't spoil any of the goodies which is partially why I didn't photograph anything (sorrrrrry! You'll thank me later) but just know you're in for a space unlike anywhere you've been before. There's a sense of childlike wonder that unfolds when you step into the main room. Get ready!! I ordered the tampiquena. Perfect seasoning and salt! Same goes for the duck quesadillas we devoured. Absolutely nothing I'd change about anything I ate. My virgin pineapple mojito was top notch and so was my husband michelada, which we've struggled to find a tolerable establishment for since leaving Texas. Thank goodness!!! While staying in Boise for a business trip I had the pleasure of staying at Capitol 500(first rate hotel with excellent staff). They recommended this place. A rep and I decided to take advantage of happy hour and Wow! Service, food and drinks were top notch. A gem of place. When there is snow on the ground and you would like to be transported to Mexico, you've come to the right place. Fantastic bar selection. My rep enjoyed whiskey, while I took advantage of their mezcal and tequila selection. I love enjoying mezcal with a bit of grapefruit and smoked out flavored salt in the rim... this is honestly a high maintenence request, but if you enjoy mezcal I think you can understand. The guys working the bar happily obliged. We shared an order of the biriani nachos, and they were delicious. The birria had a great mix of spice with a hint of cinnamon. The place oozes atmosphere and all seated at the bar and in the cozy booth tables seemed very happy. Can't recommend highly enough. read more

This place was fantastic! The food was incredibly flavorful and the kitchen was so accommodating for letting me know what included gluten and double/triple checked ingredients. The ambiance was one of the most unique places and they really thought about each piece of decoration they included. The service was very friendly, however, it did seem like we had not been assigned a server for a little while. Luckily though it seemed like the manager stepped in and tried to help out. Trendy, upscale, fancy bar, good service, and relatively expensive food and drinks. The food has Mexican names, but doesn't always follow traditional Mexican/Latin American flavors. The carne asada is made with beef tenderloin, and the carnitas are apparently made by braising a pork shank in green salsa until it nearly falls off the bone. It is not deep fried in lard or crispy on the outside. Both the sauce and the pork were delicious, and the very fresh (homemade?) corn tortillas were excellent. The guacamole appetizer (and also served on the side), had tahini added, and gave the guacamole a strong astringent, and to me, objectionable flavor. The rice also had an unusual flavor that I didn't care for, and the elote with popcorn was underwhelming and not very good. The black beans and chips, however, were very good, as were the green and red salsas. Overall, the main dishes were outstanding, and some of the sides were taken in unusual directions, to their detriment. read more
