I'm m sorry but this place has gotten worse. It's been a while since I was here so decided to give it another try. I first ordered matzah ball soup. Not only was it not hot but it was completely yellow! They did reheat it for me but that did not change the color. Something was off. My friend ordered the sliced steak sandwich medium and it came out well done and very tough. I ordered a chef salad without olives and it came WITH olives! Also the egg was not sliced and some of the meat was rolled up nicely but some was chopped up and served in the center. This I found very odd. The service was ok. Celebrating 40 years and located off of Route 4 East at the former site of Holly's Diner in Hackensack, my partner, our friends, and I have decided to have dinner tonight at this 24-hour establishment and have been here many times in the past. Greeted upon entering the Coach House by the staff, we got a table right away at one of the corner booths whose interior vibe reminded us of an old-fashioned German beer house with stained glass, plenty of booths, tables, and a bar serving cocktails, beer, and wine. Unfortunately, their once-popular salad bar is gone. Their huge menu has everything one expects in a classic diner, featuring an all-day breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We decided on Chicken Madeira with Asparagus, Turkey BLT Sandwich, Spinach Pie, and Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe. Our meal was served hot, deliciously tasty, with nice portions at a reasonable price. Our server, Danielle, was friendly, discreet, and attentive. With a relaxed and homey atmosphere, we enjoyed a wonderful meal, and we can recommend this place. read more

I've been seeing this diner since I was a tot and my parents would drive down on Route 4. Since I've been treating it like a landmark all these years, I can't believe I waited this long to finally step in. Inside, the restaurant is spacious, with plenty of booths and tables (and parking spaces in their free lot) to accommodate a mealtime rush. We shared a Cobb salad and a California burger (with lettuce, tomato, and avocado), both of which were tasty and quickly prepared. While I wouldn't recommend Coach House for a first date, there is a charm and a characteristic old-school diner feel to this place. Service was extremely attendant (sometimes crossing over into overzealousness, like when refills for our water glasses were offered four times in a ten minute space), but I wondered if it was because were were there on a slow Monday night. I especially appreciated there was no rush for us to finish a meal, since we got a chance to bump elbows with a big group that rents out the big area in front of the fireplace for their regular game night. I used to come here often.... and loved it. But my latest visit was disappointing. The service is always nice... the staff is attentive and sharp. However I ordered a bacon burger no cheese cooked well done. It came to the table with American cheese.. not a fan... and Not well done. Food was decent and decor is cool that it has an old school tavern vibe but the service and prices were what brings this place down. Waited a while to have the servers even come over to bring the menus and then after waiting for a while they were kind of no where to be found, someone from our party had to go find a server and ask them to come take our order. Food was just alright, not a ton of flavor and I thought it was a little pricey for what you get. A smallish glass of orange juice that didn't taste like fresh squeezed and was supposed to be their "large" was $5. I got two eggs over avocado toast and that was $15, i understand what the economy is like these days but a basic dish like that which doesn't even include meat can't cost that much to make. Someone in my party got the "lumberjack platter" I think it was called which was supposed to include three different meats, the server stated they didn't have sausage so we thought that person would get more of the other meats or the price would be lower but that wasn't the case. He asked about it when paying his bill and they basically said "it is what it is". My biggest complaint about the pricing which I feel like was kind of scammy was that when I went to pay, my credit card didn't seem to be working the first two times and then the third time that the hostess swiped it, they just kept clicking a bunch of buttons real fast and had me just sign and I said "oh I didn't get a chance to put in what tip I was going to leave" and the hostess said "don't worry about it" and then as I walked out and proceeded to check my receipt there was a 30% tip added onto my bill. I was only going to leave 20% seeing as the service wasn't over the top and deserving more than 20% IMO, but I wasn't given that option. The other two people in my party were given the option to put a tip in when they swiped their card so I know it wasn't just a blanketed thing for everybody or how the machine normally worked. Plenty of other diners in the area so I would rather spend my money elsewhere at a place with better service and lets me choose how much tip I leave. read more

Solid food from a solid place. We've been coming here for years and have always experienced pleasant service with pleasant food. It was valentines day night, and my guy and i didnt have plans besides stuffing our faces on the couch and enjoying netflix, but we stumbled into good ole coach house for a dinner. i havent been here since about 1st grade after a busy trip to the mall. to say i was pleased and impressed is an understatement. first off, come here for dessert. i highly suggest getting the cheesecake like we did. its silky and smooth, and the perfect amount of vanilla. all desserts (which is an extensive list) is baked and made on premises. they have a huge ass bakery in the basement. im looking forward to coming back to get a cake to go. matzo ball soup - nice chicken broth with 1 large busty ball. would get this again. the shrimp parm over linguini is a must get. but i dont think the shrimp parm needs pasta. i think they should make this an app. the medium to large shrimp are butterflied and perfectly fried. topped with mozz and a decent garlic sauce. loaded potatoe skils are basically 2 potatoes cut in half. loaded with melted cheese and broccoli and bacon. we split bacon on 2 and broccoli on the other 2. i enjoyed this but think they need salt and pepper. excellent service, plenty of parking and clean premised. read more

When we are around the area, we like stopping by Coach House Diner. Between last week and last night, still a good diner to come to when it's not busy around 8pm or 9pm we found ourselves in the area. I ordered the Roman Panini Sandwich, no balsamic vinaigrette. I love sun dried tomatoes, and this meal has it done well with the grilled chicken, fresh spinach, and the mozzarella cheese. The meal came with fries, curly fries was an alternative. If you order this, just be careful when you pick up the Panini, there's a little oil when it drips to the side. Chicken Caesar wrap - to me I think it's better to have the dressing on the side to not have a mushy mess. The chicken was good, crisp lettuce, waffle fries was a little over done but still good to eat. My husband loves the Chicken Salad Triple Decker meal. He has ordered it multiple times, definitely a favorite when we come here. Service is friendly. Sometimes the waiter or waitress takes a little longer, but food takes time and we don't mind the wait. The decorations are inviting and done neatly - the current Christmas decorations are lovely. Parking lot is spacious, prices are reasonable - we will be back soon! P.S. I've been coming to this place for almost 3 years now, my dad has been coming for almost 8! Late nights, we come and get our favorite signature dishes, and for as long as i've know; the quality of these dishes have stayed the same! The portions remain generous, the presentation is always wonderful, the calamari is always crispy, the pancakes and waffles are always soft and delicious, and my dad never fails to enjoy his panini's, burgers, and Reuben sandwiches. (i also love the pickles here) I'm more of a sweets person myself, I wish i had more photos to showcase the savory dishes! AND TO CONCLUDE, the strawberry cheesecake here is AMAZING! As New Jersey natives, my wife and I love diners, so we had a chance to try a new location. I say location because I've been to Coach House in North Bergen plenty. This was my first time at Hackensack. Great location, huge parking lot. Full menu that you'd expect at a diner. Great cup of coffee and I had a solid monte cristo sandwich and my wife went some huevos rancheros. Both dishes were great and solid customer service. My friends and I were looking for some post-show eats @ 12:30 in the morning and this pretty much was the only place open. The menu is huge and has lots of different things to choose from which made it difficult to order! I finally decided on the Cuban sandwich. That's one of my favorite sandwiches and I knew ordering it at a diner that it might not be a fully authentic Cuban. Service was speedy and attentive. Got our food in about 10 minutes. I have to say, the Cuban was pretty good and as close to authentic as you can get! Looked like it was on a whole wheat hero bread, which is fine by me. Roast pork, grilled smoked ham, swiss, dill pickles, and mustard dressing. It was pretty yummy! Came with cole slaw, a pickle, and fries. The fries were hot, fresh, and not greasy in the least. The cole slaw, which I always look forward to at diners even though the freshness can be questionable at times, was actually fresh and tasty! Nice crunchy pickle. I definitely enjoyed my meal. Prices are reasonable. They're actually pretty good. For my meal, it was only $13.50. Can't go wrong with those prices. What my friends got looked great as well. No gluten free options here whatsoever and kitchen staff doesn't know what gluten is (they thought she couldn't have the homefries because they use chili in them.) I had the sausage omelet. Big enough for 2 or even 3 people. This came with home style potatoes and toast. Omelet was not seasoned but not something pepper and ketchup can't fix.
