The place was decent! Typical counter barbecue place. It was not busy only 4 other people in the place. Service was okay not overly friendly and just didn't seem to care like we were bothering her. The barbecue nothing special and was not hot, my French fries were also cold. Sliced brisket was the best. The pulled pork and turkey really dry. I had to put barbecue sauce on it. The fried jalapeno were excellent and a very large portion for the price. I wanted another beer but the girl never came out of the kitchen so just had one. I did really like the beans.

    Brisket fat

The place has a nice atmosphere, but wasn't busy at all. I had brisket slices with mayo potato salad & fried okra. The sides were your typical store-bought type sides with the okra undercooked & mushy/chewy. I expect brisket to be fatty to some extent, but the fat in my slices took up Half of each slice. I didn't get near as much sliced brisket as my husband got on his sandwich. The 'homemade' peach cobbler had a bitter taste, no sweetness to it at all. And no ice cream. This place is over-priced!

Hours & a little Texas history.

Bottom Line: Good to excellent food from friendly folks in a casual setting. Top Line: For dinner at Coach's Smoke in McGregor TX I ordered a sliced beef brisket sandwich, beans, cole slaw, and sweet tea. The meal came to a touch over $10 after tax. So that's some pretty cheap eats! The sides were fairly typical. The cole slaw was juicy, sweet with almost no vinegar tang at all, a faint hint of pepperiness, and crunchy though not crispy. The bean's had the usual cumin & black pepper flavors, with the bit of heat coming from the black pepper. The bean's texture was a bit firmer & chewier than normal. I especially noted that the bean skins were thicker than most I've bumped into, so gave a coarser feel to the dish. The sweet tea was passable and pretty much like that found in any number of other eateries. The smoked beef brisket sandwich was definitely the star of the show. It was heavily smoked and had a wonderfully rich taste. The outer bark had a very authoritative note & sharp attack, which is a good thing in my world. The smoke seemed to have permeated the meat much deeper than other brisket I've had, like the complete smoke penetration exhibited by country hams (not those pale water-added grocery store hams!). The smoke flavor of Coach's brisket was playing front, center, and strong. The brisket's texture was a smidge drier than some, but still plenty moist. It was absolutely tender. The bun was usual sturdy white bread bun that held up well to the sauce in the sandwich. Coach's had little corn meal muffins, so I tried one. It was sweeter in taste and finer in texture than most. I can understand why the tub was mostly empty. The staff were all friendly & welcoming. The setting is rustic & low key. Outside seating for warm weather. Sign on the door indicates that they are in process of getting a beer license. They are also expanding their kitchen facility, so changes are on the way. So if you're passing through McGregor TX, stop on into Coach's casual joint for some real fine BBQ meats.

    Brisket, Sausage, Mac-n-Cheese, awesome beans.

Wow. Lots of chips and pork and cheese and more pork. There sweet sauce works well with the pork. Best to share this appetizer with friends. I chose it as my meal.

The beef rib was huge. It was well cooked, seasoned well, and without a heavy overpowering smoke taste and smell. The meat was tender and juicy. The pork rib meat was also perfectly cooked, the seasoning was one of the best mix of savory I had in a while. Instead of a special restaurant dinner for anniversary we thought we would eat a couple ribs. The adage @you get what you pay for" holds up well here. But the bill was exurban and this was before the current high price of meat & everything else. My husband said that I would not want to know what he paid which means over $100. I hope they can hang on until their supplies are more affordable. The cost will I am sure be a disadvantage. What we paid would have been or useful in filling my pantry. That being said, it was one of the most enjoyable meals we've brought home. If we could afford it we would definitely be our go-to place. We are looking forward to iur anniversary in a couple months when we won't feel guilty about paying a big price for a meal. I will go for flavor over fancy every time and Helberg fits that shoe.

OMG! We ate waaaaay too much!!!…read more Came here to celebrate my husband's birthday. There were 7 of us but ordered for 14!! What were we thinking ??? So, all main entrees were quite good: ribs and brisket were incredibly tender, catfish was nice and crisp, chicken fell off the bone, and the chicken fried chicken was delicious. We also ordered the steak fingers as an appetizer. They tasted good but should have been crispier. Had the sampler which consisted of fried pickle spears (highly recommend) fried mushrooms (honestly tasted like they came pre-packaged and corn nuggets (also quite good). Sides were what took this review to a 4 star: Mac and cheese (way too dry), coleslaw (have had better) and the green beans ( too mushy- definitely canned beans) were nothing to brag about. Our waitperson, Barbara, was quite entertaining and I must add that she was quite efficient. She's apparently worked for the owner for 22 years (of and on). The owner was at the restaurant and made it a point to ask if we enjoyed our meals. Nice touch. We ended our experience with their desserts, all made by the co-owner. Milller's Smokehouse serves up some killer smash burgers!…read more My family enjoys hunting for great Texas BBQ. We have completed the 2017 and 2021 TX Monthly Top 50 BBQ list. We started the 2025 list and we are more than half-way through the list as of June 2026. Heading to the spots in West Texas takes some logistical planning, patience, and lots of gas for the drive from the Texas Gulf Coast. On our recent BBQ quest to West Texas,we drove home via Fort Worth from Amarillo with our eyes set on hitting one of the most consistent BBQ joints in Central Texas, Miller's Smokehouse in Belton, TX. This was our fourth time to visit Miller's. Unfortunately, Miller's Smokehouse had a surprise overnight fire late February 2026. That hasn't stopped them from feeding the community great food from a mobile trailer. They had an abbreviated menu of the BBQ staples like brisket, chicken, pulled pork, pork steaks, and St. Louis Style Ribs, and assorted sandwiches and sides. Generally, I'm a Texas Trinity traditionalist. But we he had our fill of brisket, ribs, and sausage on our West Texas journey. Instead, we jumped at the Smash Burgers! First time for us and they made a favorable impression. My wife had the Single Smash. My son and I had the Double Smash. Of course we had to try the tallow Fries. Wow! Homemade buns, oversized patties, cheese, with a smattering of pickles and burger sauce. We destroyed those burgers. Compliments to the kitchen staff cooking up some great food. The tallow Fries, seasoned with just the right amount of salt were a perfect crisp while being soft in the center. Don't cheat yourself - try the Fries. We arrived around noon and there was a very short line at that time. Parking is easy with ample parallel parking and free lots close by. The staff took good care of us. It was a bit warm but they had shaded picnic table seating with plenty of fly fans at the table to keep the critters from buzzing to nibble at your food. Before we left, we inquired about nearby restrooms to wash-up before we got back on the road. We were directed across the street to Muscovy Coffee Roasters across the street. It turns out that Muscovy is Miller's upscale sister coffee house that opened days before the February fire. I could not help but notice the spacious seating area that was packed. Nor the rich roasted coffee wafting through the air. They also serve an interesting menu of breakfast items and homemade Kolaches. Got to go back for coffee and Kolaches next time. By the way, the restrooms were Buc-ee's clean+. This is the fourth time we visited Miller's Smokehouse. Hat's off to the pitmasters and staff at Miller's Smokehouse for their perseverance. We'll be back after they open the revitalized restaurant. Hoping to meet Dusty the next time.
