Our first visit on our weekend stay in Belton was for breakfast, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Even the cappuccinos were better than some coffee shops. So, we went back for supper and enjoyed that. We had bacon and egg tacos, brisket, sausage, green beans and chili. All very good! Next visit to Belton, I'm going to try the cinnamon rolls. The staff was welcoming. The service was top notch. It's Labor Day. I'm driving back from Granbury to Hutto, and I think about my Texas Monthly passport. I'm addicted to stamps. I'm addicted to putting points on the board. What BBQ place on the list happens to be open on a Monday (and quite frankly, seven days a week)? Miller's Smokehouse in Belton. Miller's Smokehouse has one of the longest tenures on the Texas Monthly Top 50, making the list four times in a row (the third-highest behind Louie Mueller and Snow's). They've got their business down. As I arrived, I parked in a free parking lot just across the street and got into the line around 12:30. The line moves pretty efficiently, and you order separately from the barbecue line. I think this immediately felt disheartening as a barbecue fan. You kinda expect to get your food while in line and watch the assembly of workers put it together, instead of them being in a separate location in the back giving you order numbers. It doesn't feel like a true Texas barbecue experience and more like a Dickey's Barbecue Pit. Instead of going for a tray, I opted for one of their specialty sandwiches, the El Gallo Picante. It has their spicy hot link sausage and their smoked chicken topped with coleslaw, onions, jalapeños, pickles, and barbecue sauce. I also got a side of their broccoli salad out of curiosity and a roll of their homemade cornbread. I got my drink and sat down with my roll of cornbread. It wasn't long until my tray came to me. The sandwich stood on its own as a behemoth. So much chicken and sausage fell out of the bun. The sandwich was less concerned about being a sandwich and more focused on creating a space to try and contain a mixture of ingredients. It wasn't bad, but it was hard to say anything other than that I felt uninspired by the entire thing. The sausage was fine, the chicken was kinda dry, but everything together with all the separate ingredients masked the meats' faults. The broccoli salad was a unique side that I had never seen before at a barbecue joint, so I wanted to try it. It was cool, but not something I'd get again. As for the cornbread, it was quality, but if that's the most impressive part of the meal, then I'm questioning the establishment's ability to create a good barbecue experience. I think it's so cool to have so many special barbecue places near me and the ability to try so many, but I'm starting to wonder if the places that stay on the list for four editions start to lose their oomph. Do they become complacent knowing they already have their business and are established? Is there any need to try and push the envelope when you're just a recurring guest on top barbecue lists? Is it a me issue? Is it my fault I went to Burnt Bean a week prior and now I'm trying a place that sells all-day barbecue? With your big brick-and-mortar and your TV screen menus, you're not as hungry as you used to be. read more

People already know Miller's is good, but I'll leave my review anyway. On top of their amazing BBQ, I feel it should be known their coffee bar and breakfast tacos are worth a try as well. Outstanding Bar-B-Que in the Temple/Killeen area. Belton is a very cute town, and Miller's is right in the heart of it (and a fantastic place to stop). The staff are super friendly. You order at the counter and they serve you at your assigned table. We more or less tried all of the meats and they are excellent. Standouts were of course the brisket, and the ribs. The turkey is also delicious. The potato salad is good too. Apparently the desserts are amazing but we were too full! read more

Sort of my go to place in Belton. Always good, with a good selection of meat and sides. Separate lines for eat in and to go, and quick service. They also have a coffee bar for those early mornings. Great place to stop in, eat, then walk it off in Belton's downtown or riverwalk. read more

I don't know what happened when I got takeout last time at Miller's and left a mediocre review. I went again, and it was sooooooo good this time. I had a pulled pork sandwich with a side of mac n' cheese. The pork was very juicy, and the mac n' cheese was interesting. It wasn't really the classic kind I expected, but it was good. Thursday at 11 week before christmas and there's a line out the door. Line moved fast though! Tried the turkey and brisket for meats, then green beans and mac and cheese for sides. The brisket was solid, turkey was alright too... turkey is usually not my favorite but this is not dry at all. The mac and cheese was delectable but the green beans so SOOOO mf salty. Difficult to eat because of the salt. It's a green no need to cover in salt. Front service guy and the people working the food are super nice. Girl who brought our food was a little lackluster (no eye contact no response just threw food down and left). I ended up buying a sopapilla cheesecake afterwards and that was the best decision EVER. This place gets packed quickly after 5 p.m. Breakfast is served until 10:55 a.m. The staff was friendly and attentive, the place had ample seating, and the bathrooms were clean. Pay attention because the stalls are for both men and women. The food is pretty good, but the portions are small. At the counter, I ordered a brisket wrap, and when the young lady delivered it to me, she called it a taco because that is how small the wrap was. Traveling up 35 and found this nice place in the quaint little town of Belton. We tried the turkey and brisket, which were super tender & tasty, and the hot links, which were too spicy for me, but my husband gave them a thumbs up. As we make our way through the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ list; I have decided that the best way to try a sampling of the bbq is to get the Texas Trinity (ribs, sausage and sliced brisket). My favorites were the ribs and sausage. The jalepeno cheddar sausage is probably the spiciest I have tried so far in our bbq adventures. I have no problem with that though. The seasoning on the ribs (St. Louis Style) was spot on and they were my favorite of the meats I tried. So, the more I try the broccoli salads at the bbq joints, the more I enjoy it. Get those veggies in! My husband really likes to have just regular pinto beans instead of all the frills that some of the joints add. He was a big fan of the beans. I enjoyed the two choices of bbq sauce and especially liked the tangy version. Wow! So good! One of the things that stood out the most to me was the amount of tables and space for dining and the organization. It seems like a lot of the popular bbq joints are streamlining the way the food is served to get customers to the table more quickly. You are assigned a particular numbered table and you go to that table and the staff bring the cue to you! They also place all the extras like the onions, pickles, white bread on the platter so customers don't "gum up the works" by hovering around the extra fixings. Brilliant if you ask me! We love when a restaurant has freshly brewed tea. Miller's has EXCELLENT iced tea. You can see all of the goings on downtown Belton out of the large bay doors in the dining room. It's a really cool setup. I noticed that Miller's has a lot of their items prepackaged and prepared for you to take home and load up the freezer. I would definitely return to Miller's! read more

The inside is spacious and clean. We went for dinner, and they were out of a few items. Once seated, the food was delivered relatively quickly. The brisket was amazing! The hot links were also great, and had a good kick of spice to them. The turkey seemed a bit dry and wasn't my favorite. As far as the sides go, the Mac n cheese was delicious, the potato salad was tasty, but I probably wouldn't order the coleslaw again. They had several beers on tap.
