Please save yourself the time and money and go somewhere else. I went here for lunch and it was an absolute nightmare and the reason I will not be going back. My server barely acknowledged my party and as a result we were there waiting for wings and a pizza for hours. She actually spent the whole time flirting with one guy at the bar and it was pretty unconformable listening to their conversation and watching them embrace each other when he left. But what really was frustrating was when the table who came after us got their food first and when we asked where our food was we were told the oven temperature is really low and taking longer to cook our food. When we received our chicken wings they were very under cooked. Blood was still coming out of the wings. When we told our server her response was "Yeah, we have been having issues with it all day." THAT IS NOT THE RESPONSE YOU SHOULD HAVE WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD. I consumed under cooked chicken because their team failed to cook it right. I am all about the thin New York style pizza, but when I picked up the box I didn't even know if there was anything in it. The wood stove definitely added good taste and saved the day for the rating of 3 stars, but I like substance to my pizza and there really wasn't much with this one. Beer @ 4.00 a bottle (Yuengling) is steep, but was cold. Steak and cheese was just okay, so won't do that again. French Fries were very good - hot, and crisp - added salt and they were spot on. After seating, it took way to long to place the order, receive the beverages, receive the refills, receive the food. Ambiance: Nice and easy. Clean, open, lots of TVs in the bar. If we didn't have a Groupon, I would have been pretty disappointed paying full price for what we got. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either (especially after having Fire Works Pizza in Leesburg). So its Friday night and we're looking for a place to eat. We decide to try Coal Fire. We were surprised it was kind of empty. (a restaurant on a Friday night with no wait??? unheard of in Frederick) Anyway, we had no idea what we were getting into with a name like Coal Fire we expected maybe steaks, chicken and burgers...things you would cook on the grill. We are seated by a young lady who obviously has no interest in being there. Then almost immediately greeted by our much happier waitress who only offered coke products, water and tea. Hubby was very upset there was no beer. We review the menus and are very disappointed. Nothing on there excited any of us (there were four of us). They offer one steak (rib eye) no burgers. Pizza, pasta, salads and subs. Not many things you would associate with a "coal fire." We finally settle on calamari, a pizza (which appears to be their specialty), a steak and cheese sub and creole pasta. After ordering we see a small flyer in between the salt and pepper. It's a list of all the beer and wines they offer. Hubby got his beer. The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, like a bistro. The music is good. The food was just ok. It's missing something though....that thing that brings you back because you can't find it anywhere else and it left me very confused as to what kind of place it is. The name, the atmosphere, the menu..they just don't go together in my opinion. Unfortunately, we will not be back. REVISED 3/26/2016: Hubby and I went back for lunch this time. We were originally going to a different restaurant in the same center but to our dismay found out it was no longer in business. We were starving so we went next door to Coal Fire Pizza to give it another shot. It was 100 times better than the first time. Pizza margarita is outstanding. Onion ring portion is huge. Calamari with sweet peppers is original and delicious, but portion is small for a big family. They specialize in thin crust pizza. Been going here quite some time now - even though sometimes the wait staff isn't the friendliest at times. If you are into spicy foods - highly recommend the spicy tomato sauce - just enough to bring a tear to your eye. Crust is excellent and goes down easy. Great Pizza!! Always looking for non-chain pizza places that offer a unique "big oven" style of cooking. I have been going here for 3 years and my wife begs to go here every date night. The atmosphere is great as well and employees are very friendly. The prosciutto cippolla is my absolute favorite. It has the signature sauce that everyone raves about topped with slices of prosciutto. I suggest this place to anyone checking out restaurants in the wormans mill shopping center! Only reason why I had to give it 4 stars is because occasionally, the pizza is a little TOO "charred to perfection." I like CFP during their happy-hour special and can only speak to it (I've only been on Friday's between 4-6pm). Drinks are reasonably priced, during this time, and they have a good selection of flat-bread "coal fired" pizza that are half-price. To top it off, the barmaids are easy on the eyes! read more

Not our favorite. The one pizza that we ordered with spicy sauce tastes no good. Burnt pizza. Coal or the black ash still too much residing on the back of pizza. Ash everywhere sticks to your fingers, and plates. Rushing/non-smiling waitress and the seating host. Before we said anything that we're done, the waitress assumed we're done and dumped the paper napkins on the fries and removed the plates. At that point we're waiting on a pizza to arrive to taste. I have to respectfully disagree with the previous reviews of Coal Fire. We just had lunch there, and I am sorely disappointed. The appetizer was bland (baked wings). The meatball sub was boring and tasteless (Subway makes a better meatball sub), and the pizza was burnt black around the edges. All in all an unpleasant experience. Went late on Friday - busy, but good atmosphere. We ordered the onion rings - really good - the dipping sauce was reminiscent of Outback's for their bloomin' onion. I wanted to like this place. Fairly attractive exterior for strip mall location. The thought of actual coal next to food is a little scary though. We decided on the steak sub and 1/2 pound hamburger because the pizza look very thin and expensive. The service was spotty. Our server was loud, abrupt and kept looking past us every moment. Not sure she was comfortable explaining the cooking methods. We didn't order drinks (lunch) so the bill was low only $27 for 2 sandwiches! Maybe that was her problem. Anyway the food was just ok. The hamburger had sautéed onions, an anemic tomato slice (I removed) lettuce and cheese. Well After the food was delivered the server came to check on us and ask if I needed condiments. I said yes, ketchup. What is the reluctance for condiments on the table? Everything we've tried has been good but the pizza is GREAT! Very different so just know that before you go. Coal oven "charred to perfection", as they call it. We always get the "signature sauce" which has a little zip to it. The fried calamari is great too, it's served in a bowl with hot&sweet peppers and a tangy sauce. I've seen some bad reviews on this place but I don't think it's fair to criticize the pizza for being "different" because they are clear that it is a charred pizza. Arrived with a group of 8...starting with the annoying server who called everyone sweetie and honey to describing the differences in the sauces-let me assure you, the only difference in the sauces is how ridiculously sweet they each are!! At least once a week we get pizza. We always go to Mama Lucia's. When we saw Coal Fire, we thought we would sneak on over and try something new. What a disappointment. When I picked up the pizza box, it felt empty. If the girl hadn't shown me the pizza, I would not have believed there was a pizza in it. The flavor was good, however, it was like a thin cracker with red sauce and cheese brushed on it. Not my idea of a pizza. If you like thin, and I mean very thin pizza, with crust that snaps, this place might be for you. I've had very uneven results here. A couple of times my carryout orders have been made incorrectly and I haven't found the management to be particularly helpful. The table service has also varied widely, largely based on the individual server and their relative competence and professionalism. Both of these issues are telling, in that both indicate seriously sub-par management. Training, evaluation, and correction of floor staff are among the most important duties any FOH manager has, and I can only guess that as so often happens with concepts in fairly rapid expansion, they've reached a point where the corporate structure has to change in order to accommodate the intensity of oversight necessary for each store. Of course, this assumes that they were executing on this at some point in the past. As this is the only location I've visited, I can't assume that things in this outfit were ever well run. The food is good but slightly uneven, but to some degree that's to be expected in a variable temperature environment. The menu is a little bizarre, with the quasi pretentious and the strangely outmoded side by side. Prosciutto, cippolinis, three kinds of sauce in the same place with a bar menu straight out of 1992. I don't understand. But I want to add something here to address an absolutely puzzling review I've just seen for this place. Nowhere do they claim any Neapolitan connection for their pizza, much less the DOC status that seems to fuel that particular piece of criticism. Just by the way, Mr. Globetrotter, if you'll adjust your monocle, I'm sure that you'll notice that the motto of this place seems to be "charred to perfection". Though I suppose you could take issue with the perfection bit, the charring you cry your little eyes out about in your review seems to be assumed and entirely appropriate. And just for your information, Chef Combo, DOC for Neapolitan pizza calls for a moderate to low protein "soft" wheat flour, not a high protein bread flour. Tool. read more

Have eaten at CoalFire several times and always get the CoalFire salad, which comes comes with a bread stick and a glass of wine. The service is pretty good, although I get tired of the "thanks guy's" to myself and husband. But that seems to be everywhere we go. So go ahead and try it! read more
