I had a chipped tooth and, even though they were short staffed, they still managed to take great care of me. Dr. Maddox was patient, reassuring, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the visit. We even had a good conversation about cars, which helped make the experience feel more relaxed. He seemed very knowledgeable and never once pushed unnecessary work, which honestly feels rare these days in dentistry. I was very concerned about finding a Dentist to help me with my broken tooth and searched for quite a while, reading reviews, and checking locations near me. I finally narrowed it down to Coast Dental in Oceanside. When I arrived at office, I was impressed with waiting area right away, and the receptionist was very nice. I filled out my paperwork and then was called in for evaluation. My Doctor was Tom Maddox. Very nice man who recommended a crown for my broken tooth. My mission was to save my tooth so, when Maddox mentioned that I was relieved right away. I did not want to have it pulled. It was after 5:00 when I was told they could do the temporary crown right away. So I let them go ahead and was ready to go home at 6:0. Amazing !!! Dr Maddox and his assistant were awesome. First time patient. Terrible experience. I had an male hygienist and was completely rude, I had no cavities just needed a cleaning and wouldn't stop grilling me about "needed to do my due diligence" He literally said this phrase 7x no joke. As he was cleaning me aggressively and didn't care I was showing signs of discomfort. I came twice for a proper cleaning and both times they didn't read my chart and instantly had a different approach when I found out I was pregnant. 1st time she got upset was when she did my x-rays and I didn't tell her I was pregnant. I literally filled out the paperwork and circled very obviously "pregnant". Definitely don't recommend coming here. The cleaning was fine but the customer service needs lots of work. read more

This was my third cleaning at this office and it each time has been a wonderful experience. I came to them after feeling like I was getting scammed by another place down the street. They confirmed my suspicions and gave me all the information I needed to know about what my dental health. I just want to warn any potential new customers or current clients to Coast Dental about my experience with this office. I'll start off by saying Dr. Maddox is a good doctor but he does lack good chair side manners. I had to go in a couple times concerning work he performed because I was still in pain. He did not want to listen to my concern. He proceeded to remind me that he is the professional and has been doing teeth for over 30 years. He was rushing me out of the office because he had to perform dental surgery on another patient and had no more time to address my concerns. He sent his assistant to continue explaining what was potentially going on with my mouth. He is always running from one room to another which probably causes him to be rushed and leads him to become rude and short tempered. This being said, maybe his office manager needs to do a better job with his schedule. Which brings me to point B. The office manager(Jenny) is also beyond rude. She couldn't update me on an insurance inquiry that had been pending. I had to call the office multiple times to try and follow up because she doesn't return calls. I have gone in there multiple times and always looks like she just rolls out of bed and goes to work. She never looks presentable and does not like to be questioned about any billing issues. Someone did informed me that she is the daughter of Dr. Maddox which explains her entitled behavior. Everyone else seems great but it just takes one person to ruin a pleasant experience. Office is beautiful inside but they seem to have a lot of homeless individuals roaming the outside. read more

I am writing this review on behalf of my 86 yo dad, Gerald. He was having tooth pain and asked me to make him an appointment. I called Coast Dental and they were able to get him in the same day, much appreciated. It was determined he needed to have a tooth and partial bridge removed. They set it up for a few days later as they waited to contact with VA doctor. My dad is on blood thinners and a pacemaker so wanted to make sure it was all safe. The procedure took longer than what we thought, however, it was so they could go slowly to avoid as much pain. My dad said he was very pleased with Dr. Maddocks demeanor and attention to detail. The whole staff did everything possible to make this a seamless process and make him feel the most comfortable in an uncomfortable situation. Our whole family goes to Coast dental. I am a newer patient to Coast Dental and have been debating posting this for a while. However, after my last visit this review is due. Dr. Maddox is great and so is the front desk staff. But, both the hygienist they have seem to lack the proper training for their profession. They chose a medical career and are suppose to be held to a high standard when it comes to patient care. I've gone about 2x now and the first time I saw a male hygienist, he introduced himself and it was going well. But then, mind you, I have visited a periodontist specialist for my periodontal disease. He took my x-rays and my cleaning lasted about 20 minutes. He went on to give me somewhat of a lecture about having to floss better and recommending a water pik and how I needed to do my due diligence. Not once did he go over any pocket concerns, usually in specialist offices the hygienist measures your pockets to see any changes. Not the case with this office. Not to mention I waited about 25 minutes for a doctor to come in and see me. I gave this place another chance and the next time I booked with a female hygienist. She didn't introduce herself to me (they don't wear name tags) but took me to her room and realized it wasn't clean. She had me wait in the hallway while she wiped it down. A little concerning because this should be standard practice in any medical office. She finished my cleaning and asked when I wanted to come back, but shouldn't the professional be telling me? I wasn't impressed with my cleanings either time and for that I will be taking myself elsewhere. It's a shame because my entire family loves this place, but for me I just won't be returning. read more

My family and I have been patients for many years at Coast Dental. They have always treated us with compassion and care. Melissa is always friendly and goes out of her way to help any way she can. Dr. Maddocks has always been a very passionate dentist. Never have had a bad experience with his care. Last couple years they have gone through many hygienist. Some have been great and others not so much. That being said, last couple visits for cleanings we have found that these hygienist must not like their job. They are always done cleaning our teeth in 20 minutes or less. I feel that they are not thorough or interested in their patients healthcare. I have periodontal disease and neither the male hygienist or Courtney ever check my gums with dental instrument. The male hygienist is always rushing through the cleaning to get to his phone. Both my wife and I have had that expierience with him. He puts his phone on counter while standing and cleaning our teeth. This is so unprofessional in so many ways. Also, could be a HIPPA violation since we don't know if he is recording us or just on phone. I have since brought it up to their attention. Hopefully, this is taken care of or we might just have to find another office. We really miss, Ashley!! read more

I could write a novel on how completely rude and unethical Dr Maddox is. Without having to go into detail about his terrible bedside manner, he is actually extremely lazy and didnt take the time to get a good look inside my mouth. He prescribed me antibiotics then the following appointment was my wisdom teeth extraction. While waiting in the chair with anticipation for removal, he sits down and starts waving his finger at my xrays grilling me about a completely different dental issue. I said thank you I understand what about you my removal today? He chastised me for interupting him and got all huffy and puffy saying that I needed a note from my general practioner. I promptly told him that it was none of his business and I didnt appreciate him dragging this out as he knew my dental coverage was ending in a week due to my 26th birthday. I told him that I want it in writing his reason for cancelling my extractions. While I was waiting for the note, I quickly called another dentist office to get this work scheduled! When he returned he haphazardly agreed to do the extractions and even said that i had a cavity on my front tooth "whats the point it will just get yellow again" also I feel he did not sufficiently numb my gums before pulling my wisdom teeth. Totally sucked considering I have been going tnere since I was 5! Fortunately for me my new dentist is amazing and she found 13 cavities at my next appointment. 13 cavities that Dr. Maddox would have missed and missed out money from!! If you're interested in going there do yourself a favor and don'tt!!! It not worth your dignity and oral hygeine health at the expense of this rude brat of a man! Also at one point he saw a cavity on my top canine tooth that he confirmed was acavity. He literally said "well theres that one but whats the point of fixing it it will just get stained again anyway" WTF!!! read more

If you look at my previous posts it will come as no surprise that Dr. Maddocks and his team are head and shoulders above the competition. I've been coming here for 20+ years and many tenured employees are still there. His right hand man Danny and I have become friends over time and it is always nice to be treated with such courteous professionalism, and to be known by first name. Today I had an emergency and despite being booked solid they fit me in and understood the urgency of my visit. If you are able to be taken as a new patient I would highly suggest seeking a partnership with this practice. Many have anxiety when it comes to seeing a dentist [myself included], but here it is on more of a personal level and they care about their customers which shows. We have been coming to Coast for I'd say over a year now. We have two small children in our family and I was very hesitant as they don't specialize in children. However, I have been so pleasantly surprised with every single member of this dental team. They are so patient with my kids and they don't hate the dentist. We love this team so much that we've started orthodontic care here as well. Very happy I took advantage of their new patient special. New to area, so was searching for local dentist. My hygienist Ashley, gave me the most thorough, precise and gentle cleaning I have ever had. The Dentist came in when she was done, and he was very cool and professional, and I am happy to say my search is over. I have found a terrific local Dental practice . Tried a different special,different dentist office, when I first moved to area, and they were nice, but I felt like I was buying a car with all the up selling, which seemed to be their main concern. I have only gone here once so far, but my cleaning was the most painless one I have ever received! Even when they prick your gums for your first exam, I was use to it kind of hurting, but the hygienist said it shouldn't have felt like that and it was possibly too hard (from my precious dentists). The dentist was also so very informative and explained on the screen about my fillings and I felt like I wasn't just getting ripped off. He made me feel comfortable and explained it in a way I understood the terminology and showing me on the screen (which is on the ceiling). So far so good! read more
