First time there, so filled out the paperwork, and didn't have to wait too long at all. They share what seems to be an office area with cardiologists, so I was not only the youngest lad there, I got to meet some really cool seniors who were just funny as hell. One man was a stand up comic in his previous life and had so many jokes for me that it was like I was at a club. I do a lot of work with the senior population, so it is always an honour to get opportunities to socialize with them. The spirit of my grandmother was there expressed via the concern of these sweet ladies over the fact that I was wearing shorts on a stormy day. Nancy was awesome. Very personable. direct, and explained everything thoroughly. Gold star for understanding my obtuse humour. Great chair side manner. Dr. Stoumbos was very friendly, mild mannered, and knowledgeable. She answered all of my questions with ease. I am not the typical "just sit there" patient, so I ask about how things work and why. I am very proactive medically, as I have to be my own advocate, and don't trust many "white coats". Dr. Stoumbos was very thorough and clear. Sadly, my vision got worse (the nuns said I'd go blind--eeek), but at my age, dropping from 20/10 vision in both eyes to 20/15 is a fact of life I will accept. As long as I can be a show off on the eye charts for a few more decades, I'll be cool. (wink).

Unfortunately, I'm not satisfied with the results. While I can use readers for close-up vision, I still struggle to see clearly in the distance. It's frustrating that I have trouble seeing while driving on the highway and can't even read aisle signs. There seems to be no happy medium--I'll need to get glasses after all, even though I was initially told that I'd only need readers. I can't undue to his procedure or get 10k back. Type of care, quality of care and office experience was very good and all staff were warm and made me feel comfortable.

I was a bit apprehensive about getting surgery but when you're married to a bat, one of you has to bite the bullet and watch the green light or it'll be the blind leading the blind. Unfortunately, my bat is far sighted so I don't think surgery would have helped. Either way, I saw my regular eye doctor recently and I'm seeing 20/20 out of my left eye and slightly worse from my right eye. And I'm okay with that. When I got the surgery, I got a slew of paperwork and meds to take. The first day was just sleepy. I think it was the pills. The second day was a little annoying. By the evening, it was really annoying with any kind of light (if you get this surgery, I highly suggest you plan a vacation around it to go camping. I stayed in our travel trailer in dim light) and we went to Walmart to pick up those dark orange safety glasses. Much more bearable. By day five, I felt fine but driving in the morning when people were using headlights, then when the sun came out, it was just mildly irritating. Now, no pain, no issues, just straight vision. If you're thinking about this surgery and you're a candidate, DOOOO ITTTT! I can now find things my bat "says" he lost but is really just on the kitchen counter. Bonus points, they have Alexa in the patient rooms so when I was bored I got a bed time story, soft music, and Alexa to keep me occupied instead of looking in the drawers and playing with the tools like I do at my normal doctor's offices.

I've been going to Clarus since I moved to Olympia12 years ago. The care was decent at first (I had…read morea history of a retina condition, so they would schedule me with an ophthalmologist for my routine exams) but in recent years I noticed they make no attempt whatsoever at continuity of care, they just schedule you with a random provider. Two visits ago, they had the radio playing in the waiting room. Reception was terrible, mostly static, and I asked the receptionist to turn it off or re-tune it. She told me she "wasn't allowed" to touch the radio. So I mentioned it to the tech when she called me back. She looked at me like I was nuts, offering helpfully, "I just tune that out". Last visit, the optometrist was using a scribe, and she dictated a term to him that was unfamiliar to me. I interrupted her to ask her what it meant, and she acted annoyed and told me to " save (my) questions for later". Of course, later never came. Last week, I called and was offered an appointment over 2 months out. The only time available was 7:45 am. I appreciate they are open extended hours to accommodate more patients, but I decided to get a referral from McKenzie at Capital Eye (by the Fred Meyer in Lacey). She recommended an optometrist only group in Tumwater. I saw them this morning and the experience was 180 degrees--nice office, up to date equipment, good bedside manner etc. The only reason I give Clarus 2 stars is they do have ophthalmologists. So if you do need cataract or retina surgery or something like that, it might be a place to consider. And oh yeah, they do have nice frames and the gal who helped me pick out my last pair listened carefully to what I wanted and helped me pick out a better pair than I would have chosen for myself.

The VA was going to pay for new glasses for me presumedly at Clarus. But Frank at Clarus knows all about how it's really supposed to work with the VA and completely disregarded copies of the VA authorizations I shared with him. Again, Frank knows how it works and what the VA gave me is wrong (if he even read it which I doubt). Frank even has a piece of paper handout created there at Clarus he gave me again stating He was right and the documentation I had from the VA was wrong. Veterans under VA care are entitled to two pairs of glasses every couple of years. Maybe those are the Veterans Frank's piece of paper directions apply to. I'm a Veteran that has a disability from an eye infection I had in Vietnam some 50 years ago. Maybe, just maybe, I'm different than the Veterans Sir Frank's piece of paper might apply to. I will never, EVER again try to deal with the Clarus Eye Center.

From the initial online consultation to the 2 hour in person consultation and day of every staff member was amazing. I appreciate Dr. Deal's frankness when we discussed I had a prism in my most recent rx, she was not shy about telling me if that correction was necessary, the Lasik procedure would not get me where I wanted to be. She didn't badmouth my Dr. she acknowledged it may have been a short term need and helped me get an updated rx without to wear for several weeks before surgery to make SURE I would get the results I wanted. I am a very anxious person, never wore contacts and eye drops were a challenge, I don't like things touching my eyes. The entire team was supportive and calming. Procedure nurse Amanda talked me through the process. Dr. King was a little more tough love (probably because i needed a little) but a professional who moved through the process efficiently with skill. I didn't feel rushed but also know they wasted no time when they knew I was struggling. In all honesty, it was way less than I had imagined. I truly am in awe of the change in my vision and so blessed to have had this team help me get here. I have been wearing glasses for 20 years and I was 20/15 at my 1st check up at 18 hours post procedure! There is a lot to know about the options and possible results.
