I've been going to Clarus since I moved to Olympia12 years ago. The care was decent at first (I had a history of a retina condition, so they would schedule me with an ophthalmologist for my routine exams) but in recent years I noticed they make no attempt whatsoever at continuity of care, they just schedule you with a random provider. Two visits ago, they had the radio playing in the waiting room. Reception was terrible, mostly static, and I asked the receptionist to turn it off or re-tune it. She told me she "wasn't allowed" to touch the radio. So I mentioned it to the tech when she called me back. She looked at me like I was nuts, offering helpfully, "I just tune that out". Last visit, the optometrist was using a scribe, and she dictated a term to him that was unfamiliar to me. I interrupted her to ask her what it meant, and she acted annoyed and told me to " save (my) questions for later". Of course, later never came. Last week, I called and was offered an appointment over 2 months out. The only time available was 7:45 am. I appreciate they are open extended hours to accommodate more patients, but I decided to get a referral from McKenzie at Capital Eye (by the Fred Meyer in Lacey). She recommended an optometrist only group in Tumwater. I saw them this morning and the experience was 180 degrees--nice office, up to date equipment, good bedside manner etc. The only reason I give Clarus 2 stars is they do have ophthalmologists. So if you do need cataract or retina surgery or something like that, it might be a place to consider. And oh yeah, they do have nice frames and the gal who helped me pick out my last pair listened carefully to what I wanted and helped me pick out a better pair than I would have chosen for myself. read more

Absolutely the WORST retail service I've had in years! The VA paid for my retina scan at Clarus. The VA paid for my eye exam at Clarus. The VA was going to pay for new glasses for me presumedly at Clarus. But Frank at Clarus knows all about how it's really supposed to work with the VA and completely disregarded copies of the VA authorizations I shared with him. Again, Frank knows how it works and what the VA gave me is wrong (if he even read it which I doubt). Frank even has a piece of paper handout created there at Clarus he gave me again stating He was right and the documentation I had from the VA was wrong. Veterans under VA care are entitled to two pairs of glasses every couple of years. Maybe those are the Veterans Frank's piece of paper directions apply to. I'm a Veteran that has a disability from an eye infection I had in Vietnam some 50 years ago. Maybe, just maybe, I'm different than the Veterans Sir Frank's piece of paper might apply to. I will never, EVER again try to deal with the Clarus Eye Center. read more

I have never been to a more unfriendly professional business. From the front desk check in to the person escorting me to another waiting area where I waited for over an hour to be put in the exam room where I waited for another half hour for the Dr to come in and and review all my eye test in 8 minutes. Totally will not go back. Not friendly at all. But they don't care as you are just a number Or money to them. They flow way too many patients in a day. read more

In the past my wife and I have been very satisfied with Clarus in Lacey. But they have apparently outsourced billing and there are problems. I am retired military and have Tricare for my Medicare supplemental. That means my Medicare copays are paid in full by Tricare. For whatever reason, Clarus billed me IMMEDIATELY after my last visit without waiting for Tricare to pay the $30 copay. I called about this and was assured it would be taken care of, but today I got another bill for the copay. I have no time nor patience for this kind of hassle and if it continues I'll be looking for a new provider. read more

I've been using Clarus since moving to Olympia in 1997. I've had great experiences with the physicians and my cataract surgeries in the middle of Covid in the summer of 2020. Since my two surgeries, I've become much less satisfied. First, one no longer receives eye exams at the primary office, s I don't see the doctors who have taken care of me for more than a decade. Now one has t go to a different location on Lilly Rd. For the very first time, in October 2024, they only did a physical eye exam. If I want my vision checked for new prescription glasses, that is now a separate 'procedure', and they charge $75 for that. As great at the physicians are at the main office, I think I'll be looking for a new practice. read more

Their website states that you can make an appointment without calling in. This is simply not true and instead just begins a game of phone tag. Bernadette Viray doesn't respond to emails. Very disappointing experience overall. read more

Services are very good, but... Clarus uses an external billing service that charges a convenience fee of $3.99 for each payment submitted. Come on Clarus... with the amount of fees Clarus charges, you opt to rip off customers for additional $3.99 convenience billing fee for each payment. Also, Clarus, where is the CPT service code on my bill? Customers have no idea what they are really being billed for. How about updating your website with current information as well. read more

The quality of Dr skill is good. The wait time is ridiculous (75 min 60 min 45 min.)and certainly not isnt quality customer service That is the problem, I feel like a customer! With the inconsiderate waiting, excessive repetitive testing before an appointment and sometimes grumpy staff and the pay up front policy must be hard for those with limited insurance. A big, busy place but someone needs to work on better management of services. read more

A few years ago I went to Clarus for an annual Ry exam, my usual eye doctor was pretty full and I couldn't get an appointment . Their system for the entire exam was not pleasant but my complaint is that Dr prescribe me eyes drops for glaucoma . My primary eye doctor had been monitoring my eye pressure etc for glaucoma and so before starting the drops I went back to him for a second opinion. I DID NOT NEED THE DROPS !! (which carry side effects) I just had carats surgery at a local large Lacey Wa provider and my eye pressure was fine there too !!!!! read more

I'm a long time patient of this location and have now had my appointment rescheduled 3 times and pushed out 5 months. This is rather ridiculous and any person I have spoken to about this has been rude and unwilling to work with me on finding a sooner appointment. It seems that absorbing other locations and patients is screwing over the patients they already have. read more

I have always been impressed with the ophthalmologists who have helped me. Dr. Pratt performed my cataract surgery, Dr. Reck did my eyelid surgery, and Dr. Aaker was terrific in diagnosing my sleepy eye syndrome and effects of my occipital stroke. This team of Ophthalmologists are the best I've experienced. I was uncertain about their Optometrists, but after carefully studying the education and experience of a 1-year newbie to Clarus, Dr. Michelle Lee, O.D. at the Lilly facility did not disappoint! She was pleasing, caring, and exceptionally knowledgeable. read more

Unless you like to sit and wait way past your appointment, every time, avoid this place. I have had ups and downs with this place over the years but have stayed out of convenience. But I am done. Every time me or a family member come here we sit in the lobby and wait anywhere from 15-40 minutes past our appointment time. And this is just the first time you sit in a waiting room. It gets better- after initial check in you get to go sit in another waiting room for another 15-40 minutes. It is really disrespectful of patients time. An appointment that should take 30 minutes ends up taking 1 1/2- 2 hours easy. I am guessing they are used to catering to retired folks who have all the time in the day to sit and read in the lobby with no regard to time. I am a professional too and time is money. I don't want to take time off work to sit in your lobby and wait and wait. If you make an appt stick to it. It doest matter what time of day you make an appointment here, it is always the same- a long wait. I feel like a number here. They need to look at their mission statement again. It is not "compassionate" to make people sit and wait and wait because you are trying to cram as many patients as you can into your schedule. It is 20 min past my appt time and I just asked how much longer and was told "some people are at lunch". Seriously ??? Then why make an appt at this time?!? So the front office gal calls back to the assistant station and asks how much longer. It is clear they don't like me asking because she starts laughing at something he says and acts apologetic for asking. I am finally taken back after 35 minutes of waiting by a male assistant who is obviously pissed I had the audacity to ask how much longer the wait would be (name starts with a T- not trying to publicly shame anyone). He doesn't greet me other than saying my name. He literally says nothing to me other than short abrupt instructions. It is actually so tense in the exam room I feel like leaving. So either he hates his job and has no customer service skills or he is mad I questioned the wait. Either way, totally inappropriate and unprofessional. After the short initial exam by him- here I am waiting in the second waiting room because the main exams rooms are full. Looks like I am in for the long haul today. Unacceptable. Dr Finley is great. But the ridiculous wait times are not. Looking for a new eye doctor for our entire family. read more

My husband had a very bad reaction to a prescribed medication. We called and got a staff person who knew nothing, but promised to ask the doctor and call back. We never got a return call. As the problem persisted, we tried calling again. Again, the person who answered promised to find answers and call back. He suffered for three days. When we finally got in for a post-surgery follow up appointment, the doctor said there was an alternative prescription that should work better and the reaction to the original prescription was preventing healing. Staff's failure to respond to patient concerns caused unnecessary pain and prevented healing. A separate issue, there are big signs everywhere saying masks are required. As soon as you are behind closed doors, staff remove their masks. We understand that staffing is tight, but this is a medical facility. Lack of staff training is putting patients at risk. read more

The Dr and Staff were nice, but they will surprise you will billing. Even after doing a complete eye exam they will charge additional $75 to write a paper prescription for glasses. I came back a two weeks later to get the prescription since I broke my existing glass frame, the insurance company would not pay the additional fees because there was no eye exam for the written prescription fees. This is not a review of the quality of medical care. I have never had a problem with that. I have been going to Clarus since they opened. My previous doctor was in a practice on Lilly Rd. that became a part of Clarus when it opened many years ago. I have always been satisfied with the level of care I received, and when I developed a problem with my retina a couple years ago, they were able to get me in to see someone quickly and treated it with such care that I was more than impressed. I felt valued as a patient and as a person, and that was at the height of the pandemic. On the other hand, last April I received a reminder to schedule an appointment for a routine annual checkup. When I called to set it up, I was told that they have a new site downtown, and she asked if I would like to schedule my appointment there instead. I said "no", I would prefer the location I am familiar with. Then she told me that they also offer a new procedure, one that does not require dilation - but insurance doesn't cover it, so it is more expensive. I said "no" to that option, too - but then she said that they only do the new procedure at the old, original location, so if I want to opt for the older, conventional procedure, I would have to schedule it at the new location. Since staying with the procedure I trust is a much higher priority to me than the location, I told her to schedule me for the conventional appointment. It turned out that I would have to wait until mid-September - four and a half months. That appointment was today. I arrived this afternoon and started to check in when the receptionist told me that she needed to collect the fee for the appointment, which has never happened to me in the past. My insurance has always covered the appointment and I have never been asked to pay anything at check-in. When I asked why, she explained that insurance doesn't cover the new procedure I was scheduled to have. I told her I had asked for the same kind of appointment I have always had, but she insisted that I was mistaken and must have misunderstood when I set up the appointment. I asked if I could have the appointment without the new procedure, she said that the only option would be to bill it as a "medical appointment" and run it through my insurance differently - which would cost me even more in co-pay fees. Since my options were to 1) go ahead with the new procedure (at my expense), 2) have her change the insurance billing to a medical appointment (also at my expense), or 3) cancel the appointment and reschedule (even though she warned me that I would not be able to get in before next year - another four month wait, or more!), I decided to cancel the appointment. But I am NOT planning to reschedule it. Since Clarus Eye Centre has stopped operating like a medical practice and morphed into a slick, highly profit-making business, I will be taking my "business" elsewhere. read more

It is sad that Claris in Lacey (on College Avenue) has decided that its ophthalmologists will no longer conduct vision testing or give prescriptions for glasses. Rather, Claris has opted to restrict their ophthalmologists to doing medical exams only, and then sending patients to its optometrists (who are located on Lilly Road in Lacey near Providence Hospital or in Olympia across from the Farmers Market) for vision exams and prescriptions for glasses. To make matters even more interesting, if a patient who is female, women's frames for eyeglasses are to be found mostly at the Lilly Road location and only some women's frames in Olympia across from the Farmers Market. I visited Clarus Eye Center 4 years ago and had a positive interaction; this was not the case for my appointment yesterday. The receptionist could not find my records which included my insurance information, however, the technician was able to access those records. Rather than hold up all of the other patients standing in line I opted to self-pay and paid with my credit card. I have the receipt. Today I received a bill asking me to pay for services. Now they need a second appointment for cataract evaluation. Very disappointed in this group. I would strongly recommend going somewhere else. read more

To begin with, Clarus billing practices are questionable. They required 2 office visits for an eye exam (glasses) and diabetic eye exam to be done on separate days or a pay fee. I contacted my insurance company, and they did not have any such requirements. Next, after speaking with the office manager, she waived this fee and setup an appointment for both exams a month later. I showed up for my exams, and I was told my appointments were cancelled without an explanation as to why. Finally, I asked the receptionist to have the office manager call me. I received no call. I've called and left 4 voicemails for her without a return call. I'm done with them. read more

I liked the doctors I saw at Clarus Eye. They really stepped up for me and I wished other medical providers were as thorough and followed through the way Dr Myung did for me. I had a bit of a scary episode with my vision and they made sure my PCP and other specialists had all the observations that They noticed so everyone was on the same page. Dr. Clark, Dr. Aker aardvark Dr. Myung all really demonstrated great care and really earned my trust Ann's high regard. The office is nice, quick checkin and friendly staff. Thank you! read more

I have been going to Claurus Eye Centre for years. Although the eye care part of the service is good, the billing and administrative department is a NIGHTMARE!!!! I have vision and medical insurance. For the past two years, Claurus has insisted on billing my medical insurance for my visit, which pays NOTHING and I am expected to come up with the balancet due. Before my last appointment, I made sure that they had my vision coverage information, but they still billed my medical insurance and did not bill my vision insurance. I have called REPEATEDLY to ask them to bill my vision insurance. I ALWAYS get a voice recording asking me to leave a message. I have left messages multiple times and have NEVER received a call back. It is time for me to find a new eye doctor. read more

At the Yelm site, I saw Corinne Bacher, OD, for an eye exam in April 2023. I stated that I wanted a new prescription for eye glasses. Without asking me, they dilated my eyes before taking measurements for glasses. Doing the dilation at that point in the exam probably saved them 5 minutes. When I complained, I was told that most people's eyes return to normal-enough function for fine-tuning the eye glass prescription. It took my eyes 6 hours to return to normal. They said that they would take the measurements at a future appointment. However, none were available during the following 2 weeks. I went elsewhere. When I tried to pay the balance online, I got the message that I was "not configured to use the Patient Portal at this practice. Please contact your practice administrator." I have been on hold for 1 hour 30 mins so far (this is Tuesday, early afternoon). I have not counted how many times I've listened to their ad, including thanking me for my patience while they "continue to navigate changing Covid guidelines". I figure this message is out-of-date by months. Entire experience does not give me confidence about any aspect of their care or service. Will not return. read more

The eye glasses shop here has very rude employees. My first frame had a giant scratch on the front of them when I received them. They were replaced a month later with another scratched pair. They refused to offer a refund and almost refused to get another set of frames. I wanted the manager to call me about this and when she did they first thing she said was "I don't even know why I'm calling you as there's nothing wrong with the frames" in a rude tone. She then continued to raise her voice on the phone and argue with me. She told me I couldn't expect to get perfect frames- all I wanted were new frames that weren't scratched. I finally got her to order another set of frames for me. It took 3 months to get frames that were not damaged on arrival. read more

I have been a patient here for many years. I received an email saying it was time for my diabetic eye exam. I called and was told they could get me in to see a doctor in April. this is August! I ended up calling back two days later and was told I could go to another office and get in within two weeks. this was not offered the first time. I show up for my apt and was told they were over an hour behind. I took two hours off work for this apt. during check in I was informed that I could get my diabetic eye exam but I would then have to pay an extra $75 to a get a prescription for new glasses, and by the way you have a balance from last year that we never told you about and now want you to pay that as well. needless to say I left without being seen. I have contacted my insurance because it seems like they are asking for additional $ for something they have always provided. read more

I would not recommend the Lacey Clarus office. The Lacey billing department is shady. They keep sending me statements (3 now) for two copays that I had already paid at my visit. I was just on hold and no one picked up after 40 minutes. I'm have left two messages on their website and still no response! My next step is to file a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner and or Attorney General. I have been trying for two months to get in contact with them to no avail. read more

My poor 88 year old neighbor- the saga continues. Her eye started acting up earlier this year, and since then I've taken her on trip upon trip to Clarus. They always seem to take FOREVER to see her, which is excusable on occasion considering how many people they see- but for it to happen every time is downright rude. I often see staff milling about and socializing with each other in one of the rooms off of the hallway, even though there are patients waiting and phones ringing off the hook. With a little focus, maybe- just maybe Clarus could be an enjoyable experience. At least they have free coffee and internet. read more

Was switched from my opthomolgist to the optometrist without consulting me. Later the OD did a refraction for glasses, could not see with the prescription I was given, redid the exam and second prescription was also no good, went to an optometrist outside of Clarus for a third exam, it was a good,/usable prescription, currently using this prescrition. Looking for an Opthmologist outside of Claus. read more

I needed a new prescription for glasses. This is the second time I have tried Claris in Lacey, Washington. The first time was years ago. They didn't get the prescription right. I went back to Costco Optical for an updated prescription. The OD at Costco retired so I thought I would try Claris again. Same problem. i will not go back. Had to wait for a few weeks to get in for exam. I had read some negative comments on Yelp so was prepared. The experience from walking in the door and out was wonderful. The staff on every level was friendly, supportive, efficient and helpful. Wait times were not long. Ended up having cataract surgery and again nothing bad to say from start to finish. Don't believe everything you hear as that was certainly not the case in my experience. read more

I scheduled my annual eye exam with a Clarus optometrist. The exam itself was fine. However, the billing system was a problem. I have two insurance policies that cover eye services: Medicare and VSP Vision Care. While I scheduled my visit as a routine annual appointment, Clarus charged it as a medicare visit. When I was leaving the Clarus facility, I asked the clerk for a copy of my prescription. She said that I would have to pay $75 before she could give me the prescription. I've had routine annual eye exams for 60 plus years and never had to pay before being given a prescription. I figured the clerk made a mistake. The clerk contacted the Clarus accounting department and I was able to get the prescription without first paying the $75. I complained to Clarus's business operations manager and she apologized and told me that I should have been billed under my VSP Vision Care policy, not Medicare, and she would make sure I would not subsequently be billed for the $75. Well, I was subsequently billed for the $75. I paid the $75. I just wanted the issue to go away. read more

To begin and preface this with the entire experience there requires context. I scheduled an appointment early 2021, fully aware of the pandemic and wait times and processes. Well shortly before my appointment they call me and state the doctor who I was assigned to see left the business/practice. The result was a months long delay to get an eye exam for both contacts and glasses prescription. With this in mind I planned for the next visit, as the next visit eventually approached. I arrive and get my fitting for contacts and process completed for attaining my prescription. However they then did not have the, I'm assuming singular person, to teach me how to put contact lenses in on duty at the day of my appointment. Naturally, I then have to make another appointment to attend this training. Upon arrival and checking in a staff member comes to let me know the individual training me is out at lunch and they have no idea when she will be back, for an appointment scheduled two weeks ago at 1330, they came to let me know the staff member was MIA as of 1316. While I did show up early, this has been the most insufferable, and long drawn out process to receive simple routine, if not common eye care. Henceforth I will never be coming here for my routine eye care. read more

We were able to book our annual eye exam and their schedule was only out about a month. Wait not too long. Various tests, procedures didn't take too terribly long. At this point it looks like Medicare, Medicare supplement, and our vision insurance have covered most of the charges. read more

Long waits, given an incorrect prescription that's explained away by everyone you talk to and ultimately has to be changed, staff to talks down to customers- staff claiming personality problems of the customer for claiming the prescription is incorrect (and it wasn't correct, the doctor had to fix it and order new lenses for my glasses). I will not be returning. read more
