Several years ago, my husband and I decided we would be proactive and make and pay for our funeral arrangements. We knew we both wanted a Celebration of Life rather than an actual funeral, and that we wanted to be cremated and have our ashes scattered. We first went to Green Hills Mortuary, as do most people in this area. It is a lovely, large mortuary with a beautiful cemetery. However, it was a little pricey for the simple arrangements we had in mind, so they suggested we contact their smaller venue, Coastal Funeral Center, in Lomita. We met with Sharon Kalani, the Family Service Advisor. She was warm and personable, easy to talk to, and we were able to easily make decisions about exactly what we wanted at a reasonable price. She never tried to upsell us on anything; just listened to what we wanted and made suggestions. Fast forward three years, and my husband unexpectedly passed away. How easy it was for the hospital to contact Coastal Funeral Center, and they even commented on how fast the funeral center was able to take the remains from the hospital, even though they were in Los Angeles on a Saturday. Coastal Funeral Center took care of the cremation and provided us with the ashes. They also took care of arranging for a military honor presentation at our Celebration of Life event, and I was presented with an American flag. Sharon Kalani came personally for that portion of it, to make sure it all went as planned. All of the other arrangements were made by Zia Allen, the Funeral Arranger. She was amazing. Always kind, compassionate and thoughtful, Zia took care of creating a beautiful Program and a Memory Card, carefully planned and designed by listening to our input. She was never impatient or too busy - she always took my calls and came to my house several times to show me drafts of what she was creating. We were able to go to her office and see what she was doing on a large screen, and she also arranged a beautiful tribute video with the photos we provided. Furthermore, when I was so frustrated with trying to get an obituary in the local paper, she took care of it easily and effortlessly. And when we ran into a last-minute problem with our centerpieces, she went over and above to solve the problem for us in time for our event. Losing a loved one is a stressful and emotional event, but I must say, these women truly cared about us and went out of their way to ease the burdens that come with such a loss. I truly felt like they were my friends, who wanted to help in any way they could. I wholeheartedly recommend Coastal Funeral Center to help you with your loss. read more

From the very start of our difficult journey, when Mama left her earthly body, the team at Coastal Funeral Center, was compassionate, attentive and I never felt rushed as we went through the emotional process of my mother passing away. Mike, Sara and Elizabeth were true professionals, very knowledgable, responsive and caring during our process. This is a local Lomita business right on Narbonne Avenue, that Mama and I went to years ago to plan for her eventual departure. I was not comfortable at first, when I took Mama to the appointment. But the staff was very friendly, explained everything and responded to all our questions. I am so thankful Mama did this years ago. Having Mama's wishes already in writing, took much of the guesswork off of the family and it was so very helpful during such an emotional time. As far as the layout of the business, as you enter the you see the interior of the beautiful chapel. It is impressive. There is a kitchen/reception area, also a separate area, I assume for those who would a moment of solitude. The design of the building is a coastal theme throughout the interior and exterior of the building. Very well-done. Even the exterior of the building was constructed to look like a lighthouse. So appropriate as the staff lights the way, if you will, to help guide us as we lay loved ones to rest. They provided an app for us to put together a video, super simple to use. Family absolutely loved the tribute to Mama's life. They also did the folders, for the memorial. Thank you notes were also done professionally. Death and dying is a delicate field of work that one expects professionals to respectfully conduct themselves in. UNfortunately this was not the case at Gamby's. From multiple dealings with the blase' staff here, I cannot morally recommend this company to anyone, for fear of them experiencing what I and my family did at the recent passing of a family member. There is no excuse for treating the families that have recently lost a loved one(s) as if the departed were a mere business transaction, no matter how long the employees of Gamby's may have worked here and become desensitized to death. Hard to express our gratefulness to Gamby. We had my father cremated there 20 years ago. A service was held for my uncle today. After being explicitly told by my cousin that her father was an athiest and that she wanted no reference to religion during the service, the employee who conducted the service launched right into the 23rd Psalm and then preached about how my uncle was at peace with the lord and on and on. I thought an altercation might erupt but everyone just bit their tongue and let it go. It was an infuriating situation and a slap in the face to the deceased and his family! Our family settled in Lomita over 100 years ago and Gamby's has conducted services for probably dozens over the years, including my grandparents.
