While on vacation with my kids and parents we wanted tacos for our last meal before leaving San Diego. I searched and this place kept coming up. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is unassuming as it's so spacious compared to what you see from outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server Elizabeth was very accommodating and friendly. She was attentive to my kids which I appreciated. The kids had burritos and chicken quesadilla and I had the chicken flautas which were yummy. The portions are very large as they come with rice and beans. My parents had tacos that they enjoyed as well. We had a great experience here and would recommend this to people who are visiting San Diego.

Went here on a Saturday and managed to get seated pretty quickly! The patio is very cute and welcoming. Service is wonderful with a live mariachi band that floats around. I am very particular about Mexican food as it is my favorite cuisine and I can honestly say that every meal we ordered was delicious! Everyone left full with leftovers for the next day. Patricia was our waitress and she was very kind and helpful offering her favorite menu items.

Some what greeted by the young lady behind the desk as we walked in, customer service was definitely lacking. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were given the option to sit indoors or outdoors and chose indoors.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining room is large and clean with strolling Mariachis.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Two baskets of chips and excellent salsa were promptly brought to our table as we sat down. A few minutes passed and a waiter came by to take our order, he seemed to be in a rush as he took our orders. Our plates came out rather quickly and all were substantial in size. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As we ate our meals the Mariachis came by and seemed a bit annoyed when we told them we had no requests.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was good but not 100% sure I'd return purely based on the customer service. There is also plenty of free parking.

When the worst part of a dining experience is the parking lot then nothing really went wrong with your meal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The servings were huge, the staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was incredible.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu was expansive with options for every taste bud. With a plethora of Mexican options in San Diego, Casa Guadalajara is worth checking out

The food flavor and portions given here never disappoint. I came here with my sister and mom for a girl's night we were seated outside fairly quickly. The weather was perfect and we were joined by some birds that did not have any fear. They were determined to get any fallen chips. I don't blame them. The chips and salsa are delicious! I could have the chips as a meal and I'd be satisfied. Our food was served warm with enough leftovers for the next day. Love this place.

Still the best food, service and atmosphere!! Diner beware of the spice thermometer! Tequila Lime Shrimp is dreamy but the Shrimp Diabla blew my palate out today! Nose running, coughing and pounding water too!! Just too much chili chef and servers should warn the diner about the amount of hot spice!! The fresh made flour tortillas are divine and my husbands enchiladas verdes were chefs kiss!

Always a delight. Years after years of exquisite service and food, plenty of parking. 5pm on a Sunday and still got me in and out in under 40 minutes.

Was a work week in San Diego and my manager recommended this place. Food is pretty good! I got the mahi mahi in a lime cream sauce. Mahi mahi was cooked just right! The handmade flour tortilla took it over the top! Lighting was a bit dark in places. Couldn't take good pics.

I've been coming here for the past three years, and it never disappoints. Every visit feels like stepping into the heart of San Diego's culture--this place truly captures the energy, diversity, and spirit of the area in such a fun and welcoming way. The atmosphere is unmatched. From the colorful decor to the lively setting, it feels immersive in the best way. Add in the live music, and it just elevates the entire experience--there's always something going on, and it makes every visit feel like a celebration. The food is delicious and feels genuinely authentic, and the margaritas are massive--seriously, bigger than your face. Perfect for sharing... or not. Overall, this is one of those places I keep coming back to, whether I'm with friends or bringing people from out of town. It's consistently a great time and a true San Diego staple.

Came to Casa Guadalajara in Old Town and wow... this place is a whole experience. Right when you sit down, they bring out warm chips and salsa (dangerous in the best way). The food came out fast and portions are HUGE -- definitely come hungry. We ordered a mix of dishes: Chile Colorado - super tender beef, rich and flavorful sauce Carne Asada plate - solid, juicy, and well-seasoned Enchiladas with rice & beans - classic comfort combo Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared, and you can tell they don't hold back on portions. The vibe is festive and lively -- feels like you're right in the middle of a celebration. Service was friendly and attentive, even though the place was busy (which it usually is). That matches what a lot of people say -- great food and welcoming staff. Only thing to watch: you'll fill up FAST (especially with the chips), so pace yourself Overall: Great for groups Big portions Fun Old Town atmosphere Would definitely come back -- just with a game plan next time.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Located in Old Town right on corner of Taylor and Juan Street. This is a large building and would be good for big parties.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated in the patio area and Martin was our server.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered a large margarita (more like a pool, lol) and had that with the chips/salsa for the table. Chips were piping hot, fresh and salsa was delicious and not too spicy. Our food was out quickly and we were both happy with our meals. Hubs had the combo #6 enchilada, taco and chile rellano. I had the cheese crisp with chile Colorado, epic! Very flavorful, generous portions. This place is a classic solid choice, come and see for yourself!

Casa Guadalajara was a great experience as I visited San Diego. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance, music, and food set a beautiful authentic atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was top notch from start to finish. We went with a very large party and they were able to accommodate without any issues. Our server although very busy as the place was packed for dinner, was timely and checked on our table throughout. The food was so very delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat in their beautiful outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Totally an enjoyable experience.

Found Casa Guadalajara on Yelp after reading good reviews. The restaurant is conveniently located in old Town San Diego and has plenty of free parking. We came for lunch on New Year's Day and waited about 5 minutes for a table. The chips and salsa were excellent with the salsa being very mild. We ordered and the food came out within 5 minutes which was great cuz we were starving. The portions are huge! I ordered the California Burrito which came with a side of Mexican rice and refried beans. I probably only ate a third of my burrito because it was so big! It wasn't the best California burrito I've ever had, as the fries were pretty soggy. But it was not bad. It was so big though, I think you get a pretty good bang for your buck here. (It was about $20 per entree, but not one of us could finish our whole meal.) After lunch, we walked around Old Town and shopped which was nice to walk off some of our meal. Overall this was a nice Mexican restaurant albeit one of many in the area.

Can someone please confirm whether the patio area is definitely (or definitely not) dog friendly?

    What are the vegan options?

    Many vegan options!

Are you permitted to bring champagne? Is there a corkage fee?

No outside alcohol is not allowed

Is there still a Happy Hour in the bar weekdays? Do they still have the free appetizers with the purchase of drinks? (If not, they really should bring that back. Loved it!)

They eliminated the free food buffet shortly before Covid began. Never brought it back. More profit is selling overpriced appetizers. Happy Hour crowds there have predictably dwindled.

    Is this place Dog friendly?

I don't think so as I never seen a dog there. But they do have an outdoor patio area - might need to call and confirm.

Still no Mariachis on Saturdays for dinner? Just double checking!

They had a mariachi band when my fiancée and I were there on a Saturday (Easter weekend).

What time does the mariachi start on Saturdays?

Dear Carlos, thank you for your inquiry. After many long months we are happy to say that we have been able bring back limited Mariachi on Friday and Sunday evenings, but unfortunately they are unable to perform on Saturday nights, so I hope that…

Can I make a reservation for a party of 11?

    Yes reservations are suggested

Are dogs allowed on the patio?

Hello Amber Yes, friendly dogs are allowed at our restaurant in the courtyard patio. Service dogs…

    Do they have Mariachi?

Yes -- a small mariachi group -- two guitars and a violin -- playing and singing excellent mariachi music. ¡Está bien!

Do they have fresh, hand made flour tortillas?

    On fleek tortillas too

I tried to make a reservation but all I got was a voicemail to Filiberto. I left a message for 20 people on Friday May 10. Hope I hear back soon?

Our apologies, as you can imagine Casa Guadalajara was extremely busy with a high volume of guests for Cinco de Mayo Festival in Old Town and we could not answer the nonstop calls coming through. We do not accept reservations for Mexican Mother's…

    Is this place kid friendly?

Yes! There's live mariachi band that goes around and sing, great entertainment

    Do they have parking?

Hello Kathe We do have our own parking lot, however on busy days ( which is almost daily ) it does fill up quickly. The good news is that we are just across the California…

Are reservations needed? Do they accept them?

Yes I highly recommend making reservations. The wait can be 30-45 minutes long.

Do you have any taco Tuesday specials?

Yes they do, especially in the Bar area.

    Is the brunch buffet style?

    No it is not.

How is their margaritas and tacos?

Flavor margaritas are amazing. If you like the strong type, get it in the rocks and just regular. You will enjoy it

I initially ordered the something and picante (can't remember the full name) and found it to be way too sweet. Then switched to a basic Lalo with soda and lime to cleanse my palette. After tried their version of an espresso martini which was quite good but made with nitro brew and kahlua so a bit on the sweeter side. I'm really glad that I found Oculto because it has been one of the highlights of my San Diego trip. First of all, the concept of the seven deadly sins is really cool. The space is absolutely moody, intimate, and thoughtfully designed. It has an atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy your drink rather than rush through it. And since I don't really drink, I was definitely going slow. And I was alone, but the good part was I found myself just taking it all in instead of reaching for my phone. I started with an espresso martini-style cocktail that was smooth, balanced, and the perfect way to ease into the evening. For my second drink, I asked for the bartender's choice, and it ended up being one of my favorite cocktails I've had in a long time. It featured lychee, strawberry, and cardamom, and was garnished with a beautiful little rose. It was creative, elegant, and every flavor worked together perfectly. The cocktails were outstanding, but what really made the experience stand out was the service. Devin was an excellent bartender and an amazing conversationalist. He was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaging, making me feel welcome from the moment I sat down. He took the time to craft a drink based on flavors I enjoy, and it was clear he cares about creating a great experience, not just serving drinks. If you're looking for a cocktail bar with incredible drinks, a gorgeous atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality, I can't recommend Oculto enough. Full disclosure, I'm a sucker for a themed speakeasy, and Oculto delivered with its Mexican gothic twist. Entering through a confessional booth, confessing your sins before once again giving over to temptation as you sample seven deadly sins-themed libations; oh yeah, this is the themed spectacle that I adore! For those wanting to visit, Oculto is small and reservations are a must. They also have a two drink minimum and the seatings are timed. Everything we ordered was fantastic and I adored the presentation. My only complaint, and the reason for the four stars, is that despite its small size, service was still on the slower side. I get that the bartenders are making complicated craft cocktails, but when you have a two drink minimum AND a time limit for your guests, maybe speed it up a little bit? We would have loved to order another round but sadly ran out of time on our reservation. But everything else about the bar was fantastic, and I will definitely be back for another night of debauchery in the future!

Parking is a nightmare good luck finding parking within a mile of the restaurant. Pros: atmosphere, drinks, service Cons: food wasn't great for the price, restaurant was small and crowded, no parking Service: All of our servers were friendly and very accommodating. Gave us some knowledge on the menu and recommended cocktails based on our preference. I had spilled my drink and they were quick to make me another one. Food: I had intended to get the prime ribeye cap steak but they ran out for the night around 8pm. I shared the steak sampler which came with four different cuts of steak and 4 sauces. I ordered medium and it was cooked medium/medium rare which was fine with me, it also had a good sear, almost burnt though. Out of the four steaks, we only liked two based off flavor and tenderness. The other two were more tough and gamey. None of the sauces really stood out but the bordelaise and horseradish were good. For our sides we got fries, roasted broccoli, and the grilled wedge salad. Fries were average. The roasted broccoli had really good flavor, I expected the broccoli to be al dente but it was cooked to mush and drenched in sauce. The grilled wedge salad was decent, there was a slightly bitter taste to it. I know it says grilled wedge but the experience of biting into the salad and it being both hot and cold was not pleasant. Cocktails: I tried the Honey Ryder and New Wave. These were recommended as the more fruity/sweet cocktails. You can definitely taste the alcohol but it's only 2oz so it's not too strong. Ambience: 10/10 I got seated downstairs by the bar. Only thing about downstairs is that it's too dark to take photos unless you use flash. Overall, I agree with the other reviews saying to go just for drinks and appetizers. I would go again just to sit upstairs and get drinks and take pictures. Such an interesting layout, but it works! We got to sit at a table right next to the waterfall and pond. Our server was very nice. Probably the only slip-up in service, was that our main came out when we had barely put a dent in apps. We were probably chatting and sipping on wine too much? The expo realized, kept the mains, and said take your time. Then he brought out mains when we were ready. Everything on the menu sounded amazing. Between the food, drinks, and the incredible decorations, it feels worth it for those occasions. One piece of advice: make a reservation. This place is popular, especially during the holidays and other seasonal events, and tables fill up quickly.
