We just got back from a dinner at Cochina De Barrio. It had a very friendly vibe as they have an outdoor patio area where we could bring our little dog. Not only was the food and our cocktails delicious, but what really made a difference was Alex who served us. He was very engaging and gave us his honest opinion on what to order. In fact, he changed what we were going to order for our drinks as well as our entrées and dessert. They were all top-notch and it was clear, these were all dishes that he genuinely preferred. Daniel the manager also came out to ensure that we had a great time and while the food was excellent their support in making our dinner a very fun night was awesome! Cocina de Barrio is always fresh and delicious. I've been to the Hillcrest location several times, but this past weekend was my first visit to the North Park location. The customer service was great, and the food was absolutely fire. Our server recommended a shrimp elote dish, and I'm still thinking about it days later. It was packed with flavor and easily one of my favorite things we ordered. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere. It felt calm and relaxed, making it an easy place to sit, enjoy a meal, and catch up with friends. Definitely a great spot for dinner or a few snacks after cocktails. read more

I kept it at 5 stars because the indoor seating is nice, but it was a 4 star for outside. The staff were super friendly and quick with service. From the food to the drinks, this place was 10/10! We came here on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. All the employees were kind and didn't make us feel rushed or unwelcome. It's a very mellow atmosphere inside, so it's a perfect place to have a relaxing meal and be able to have a nice conversation with friends and family. They have tons of options for brunch, lunch and dinner. Even several vegan options as well! I ordered the beef birria tacos off the dinner menu. They looked so tasty, I couldn't even snap a pic before they were devoured. They're made with the softest blue corn tortillas. Like pillow soft. The meat they used didn't have any gross gristly pieces in it either, and was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I love all the toppings they added too. It's clear they take care with all their dishes. Ordered the Horchata cold brew and cafe de olla. Both drinks were a miss for us, the horchata cold brew tasted watered down and the cafe de olla was okay. We were told the horchata cold brew is just horchata and cold brew mixed together. Not sure if this was true but would be disappointing to know if this was the case that I can just simply do this at home. Food: Ordered Fresas con Crema French toast and Green chilaquiles. Although there weren't many people when we arrived it took about 35 minutes for our food to arrive. Both dishes were underwhelming. The French toast was over saturated with cream and the actual FT lacked flavor and because of the amount of sauce, most of the toast got very soggy. The chilaquiles were not bad but the green sauce could be better and the birria that came was okay. We were not in love with the dish. Our server checked on us a few times, had to wave other servers from time to time when we didn't see ours for a while. It did get a little crammed after a while and tables for two run a bit small and right next to other tables so someone did bump into our table while getting into their seat due to space. Used my trusty app to find a brunch place and landed here. I found it to be incredibly authentic, delicious and reasonably priced with friendly service. To start, we ordered some adult beverages - white sangria and bloody Maria. Both were served quickly with beautiful presentation, and they were quite tasty. With a group of girlfriends, I could see myself getting the bottomless mimosas (currently $22). For our breakfast, I came in thinking I would get chilaquiles, but I changed my mind after seeing the huevos rancheros were served atop 3 crispy fried corn tortillas (essentially fresh tostadas) AND with lamb birria. Hubby ordered the enmoladas. Minutes later, our entrees arrived. I really enjoyed the crisp of the tostadas, perfectly cooked eggs over medium and the flavorful, tender birria. I've come to realize that I prefer beef birria (birria de res) as lamb does have more gamey taste, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And the potatoes were just right - nicely seasoned and cooked well. Hubby's dish was just as good. I usually find mole to be overpowering and I tire of the taste quickly, but the mole in his enmoladas had the right amount of sweetness and the short ribs were very tender. Service was very friendly and we were checked on a few times by both our server and a person I believe to be the manager. Hubby gave it 4 stars - said his dish could have been a little hotter. I'd say more like 4.5 stars for that reason, but I rounded up to 5 stars because I enjoyed it that much. If she felt uncomfortable, there were more professional ways to address the situation rather than stating he was intoxicated when that was not the case. The BEST breakfast we had on our San Diego trip! Hands down, everything about this breakfast was 5/5. The service, the ambiance, and the food knocked it out of the park. We arrived shortly after opening. If you want to eat here, arrive early--it fills up fast. Despite ample seating, the waitlist grows quickly. After an incredible brunch, I understood why. Our server, Ricardo, was top-notch. He served our family with the best care and attention. He explained the menu to us and the history of the restaurant's Oaxacan menu. Our family appreciated his explanation and recommendations so much. The menu itself was already so impressive that Ricardo's suggestions made it even harder to decide which direction to take. We ultimately enjoyed: Cafe de Olla: Delicious blend of cinnamon and espresso in every sip. - "Cheese Cake Pancakes": These were almost too beautiful to eat! Sweet, fluffy, and perfectly cooked, these pancakes were both visually and flavorfully appealing. - "Enmoladas": These hand-pressed corn tortillas were filled with 10-hour braised short rib. The meat was tender, flavorful, and melted in your mouth upon contact. The mole coloradito served in this dish was prepared exceptionally well. The fried eggs and refried beans complement this combo wonderfully. - "Tlayuda": THE STAR DISH OF THE MORNING! Of course, this was my dish. Ricardo described this as a "Mexican-style" pizza, which is considered Oaxacan street food. I entirely underestimated the size. Larger than my hand, this delicious brunch dish was one I could not stop eating. The tender birria, combined with the melted Oaxaca cheese, avocado mousse, and refried beans, laid out over a large, thin, crunchy tortilla, complemented each other perfectly. I eventually tapped out 3/4 of the way through, and with deep sadness in my heart, had to leave the rest. I can't say I've ever tried anything similar to this, and I am so glad my first one was here. What an outstanding dish! Cocina offers a great kids' menu with both savory and sweet items. They also have a full bar offering mimosa flights and other fun brunch cocktails. Ricardo and his team did a fantastic job attending to our table, bringing our food to us as soon as it was ready from the kitchen, refilling our coffee and water without us asking, and allowing us the time to comfortably and slowly savor this moment as a family with an unbelievable brunch. We decided to do brunch before heading out for the day. Looks to be a fave on yelp so we decided to try it. Yelp did us right again! Cocina De Barrio did not disappoint. The interior is gorgeous and comfortable be sure to check out some of the artwork because it's really fascinating. Even a hole leading to the restrooms is fascinating. The real star, however, is the food. The five of us and a three year-old and we all scarfed our food. Wow! This new location of CDB is AMAZING! We decided to stop in for brunch, about an hour and 15min before closing time. We were greeted by the host right upon entering the place. He immediately seated us at the back wall, with menus, next to the kitchen. Our server was Paco. He was very customer service oriented. We appreciated his promptness and that he took our order in a good amount of time. The only drawback was that my husband likes his scrambled eggs runny (cooked slightly undone) and he ordered it this way, but the chefs were not able to do this. The host explained that due to the way the griddle is set up, it is impossible to get the runny "soft scramble" eggs that he ordered. They did their best to deliver though, and we appreciated that. Overall, our food was delicious and the mimosas are DELICIOUS! I highly recommend getting the Bottomless Mimosas here. They have Hispanic Inspired juice compliments for the mimosas: Tamarindo, Jamaica, Pineapple, Mango, Cranberry, etc. I normally dont get benedict breakfasts but the Sopes Benes dish looked delicious with a chipotle hollandaise sauce.
