Wow! What a breakfast me and my family had at Cocina De Barrio. Probably the BEST BREAKFAST I HAVE HAD IN 2026. There were six in our group so we all ordered something different so we could share and taste several dishes. They did not disappoint. The restaurant is very fun, clean and welcoming. The staff were amazing and very attentive throughout our entire meal. I started off with a Bloody Maria. I ordered it with tequila. It was so refreshing, tasting and flavorful. I ordered a second one made with vodka. It was equally as delicious. The rest of my party ordered a variety of drinks and everyone seemed to really enjoy them. For breakfast we ordered Chilaquiles Rojas, Chilaquiles Verde, Short Ribs & Eggs, Buttermilk Pancakes, Creme Brûlée French Toast and Churros & French Toast. The food was cooked perfectly, hot and packed with flavor. The Chilaquiles Rojas was my favorite followed by Short Ribs & Eggs. To avoid a family argument we just decided to agree to disagree on which dish was the best. The one thing we did agree on is that we must come back soon for another great meal. read more

Cocina de Barrio was the place I was most looking forward to during my trip, and it was the only restaurant I made a reservation for. It caught my eye because of its unique Oaxacan cuisine and modern interpretations. I also loved that the menu offers plant-based alternatives in every section, which is perfect for a large group with different dietary preferences. The space itself is nice enough, but when I walked in, I immediately knew there might be a problem: there was no air conditioning. I asked if we could be moved outside, but there wasn't a table available for five, which was fine. Unfortunately, it was extremely hot inside, and everyone was sweating throughout dinner. It dampened the mood quite a bit. We're from Sacramento, so we're used to 100-degree weather, but high-80s temperatures with humidity and no A/C in a small restaurant is crazy in my opinion. That said, the service was genuinely top-tier. Everyone was attentive, kind, and helpful throughout the meal. We ordered the coconut aguachile, ceviche de robalo & xoconostle to share, and I ordered the lamb memelitas. The food spoke for itself, and the presentation was stunning. Every dish was beautifully presented, and since we eat with our eyes first, it was clear that the restaurant understood the importance of that. The coconut aguachile was really good. The coconut flavor wasn't too strong, and it made for a great plant-based alternative. Everyone at the table enjoyed it so much that they wanted to try making it at home. The ceviche was also delicious and tasted incredibly fresh. The blue corn tostadas served with it were excellent as well. It was a great start to the meal and helped us cool down a bit. Then the memelitas arrived, and they were incredible. If there is lamb on the menu, I'm ordering it. The masa cakes sat in a tomato-based sauce, and I believe memelitas are uniquely Oaxacan. I'd had them before at another restaurant and loved them, so I was excited to see them on the menu after such a long time. The lamb birria was incredible... rich, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Not a single element felt out of place; every bite was balanced in both flavor and texture. Two memelitas were the perfect portion because they were generously topped. Based on the food alone, this place is an easy five stars. Unfortunately, I have to give it four because we were all so uncomfortably hot and sweaty during the meal that we didn't want to stay for dessert. We got here as soon as it opened and there was already a small line that had begun when we got there but they were so fast to seat us thankfully. Ambiance was that of a busy restaurant but peaceful. Especially if you're in the outdoor seating area. Our server was also very sweet and attentive to our request for modifications to our meals. I ordered the tacos de birria with lamb. The presentation was amazing! The tacos were flavorful and moist. I have to say, my favorite thing to do is getting my mouth on a moist taco. I'll lick up all the juices. The beans and rice were great, too. I also ordered the horchata, and man, it was delicious. You can tell it's made in-house because every sip has that homemade flavor. The chips and salsa were also excellent. The chips had the perfect amount of salt, and the salsa was thick and wet. Once again, I love thick and wet, it drives me crazy. Overall, this joint is dope. Food for the most part was pretty good! Prices were fair. I got the mole chilaquiles which were flavorful and delicious. I tried the pancakes which were sweet and fluffy. I had a couple bites of some tacos which had tender meat. The ceviche was alright. I think it could have been served at a colder temperature. Service was mixed. We had a group of 5 people and 2 dogs and hoped to sit outside because of the dogs. There were two 2-people tables on one side and one 2-people table on the other side available. When we asked, they told us they couldn't split us into 3 people on one side and 2 people on the other, but for some reason it was considered a fire hazard. We couldn't really add up how that would be the case since either way there would be two tables used on one side and one table used on the other, but we didn't argue. We ended up asking the last person in our party not to join us until after we ate. Other than that, they were very polite and brought us sauce to try. On a Sunday morning, we were able to get a seat for two right away. Parking/environment: As with any other North Park establishment, dedicate extra time to look for street parking especially if it's a busy time. Modern vibes inside filled with beautiful plants and flowers all around. Plenty of tables all around and it looks like a bigger party can fit. My only complaint is that our two person table was back to back with other tables so it felt tight and stuffy. Food: The portions are huge and our eyes were hungrier than we were. We wanted to share a sweet entry and ordered two savory ones on top of that. We had too much leftovers as the dishes were very filling. Next time, we'll only get one savory and one sweet. -Chilaquilles Rojos ($22.95): crispy tortillas even when slathered with red sauce. Topped with chicken tinga and an egg. -Enmoladas ($22.95): 3 corn tortillas filled with braised short ribs topped with mole and fried egg, served with beans and potatoes. This has been my second time here, I came last week with my husband for my birthday. Unfortunately I did have some complaints. It was way too hot in there. I feel like I didn't really enjoy it because I was trying to eat fast so I can leave and get some ac. Also there was way too many flies, it was really uncomfortable eating and having to worry about all the flies half the time. Lastly, all tables are really close. From the food to the drinks, this place was 10/10! We came here on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. All the employees were kind and didn't make us feel rushed or unwelcome. I really hate that I didn't enjoy this place. I love the overall theme and was excited to see authentic Mexican food. A little disappointed a brunch menu wouldn't include a little more variety for coffee drinks such as a latte or mocha. We were seated right away on a Sunday morning. Ordered the Horchata cold brew and cafe de olla. Both drinks were a miss for us, the horchata cold brew tasted watered down and the cafe de olla was okay. We were told the horchata cold brew is just horchata and cold brew mixed together. Not sure if this was true but would be disappointing to know if this was the case that I can just simply do this at home. Food: Ordered Fresas con Crema French toast and Green chilaquiles. Although there weren't many people when we arrived it took about 35 minutes for our food to arrive. Both dishes were underwhelming. The French toast was over saturated with cream and the actual FT lacked flavor and because of the amount of sauce, most of the toast got very soggy. The chilaquiles were not bad but the green sauce could be better and the birria that came was okay. We were not in love with the dish. Our server checked on us a few times, had to wave other servers from time to time when we didn't see ours for a while. It did get a little crammed after a while and tables for two run a bit small and right next to other tables so someone did bump into our table while getting into their seat due to space. I've been here once for dinner and was recommended to come back for brunch. Chilaquiles rojos - The tortilla chips were nice and crunchy and the guajillo sauce was fresh and just enough acidity. However, the sauce was quite thin and pooled on the plate. The chicken tinga was also a little watery. Mole chilaquiles - Similar to the rojo, but unfortunately the mole was very bland with a bit of sweetness. It lacked spices and nuttiness that add depth to a mole to make it flavorful. Honey spicy waffle - Unfortunately this dish was unacceptable. The chicken resembled a Tyson-style chicken nugget or patty, covered in sweet and sour sauce (similar to McDonald's). The waffle itself was standard. It felt so far below the quality of the other dishes, I think it should be removed or reworked. I hope in the future they switch in-house breaded fried chicken. With a group of girlfriends, I could see myself getting the bottomless mimosas (currently $22). For our breakfast, I came in thinking I would get chilaquiles, but I changed my mind after seeing the huevos rancheros were served atop 3 crispy fried corn tortillas (essentially fresh tostadas) AND with lamb birria. Hubby ordered the enmoladas. Minutes later, our entrees arrived. I really enjoyed the crisp of the tostadas, perfectly cooked eggs over medium and the flavorful, tender birria. I've come to realize that I prefer beef birria (birria de res) as lamb does have more gamey taste, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And the potatoes were just right - nicely seasoned and cooked well. Hubby's dish was just as good. I usually find mole to be overpowering and I tire of the taste quickly, but the mole in his enmoladas had the right amount of sweetness and the short ribs were very tender. Service was very friendly and we were checked on a few times by both our server and a person I believe to be the manager. Hubby gave it 4 stars - said his dish could have been a little hotter. I'd say more like 4.5 stars for that reason, but I rounded up to 5 stars because I enjoyed it that much. The customer service was great, and the food was absolutely fire. Our server recommended a shrimp elote dish, and I'm still thinking about it days later. We decided to do brunch before heading out for the day. Looks to be a fave on yelp so we decided to try it. Yelp did us right again! Cocina De Barrio did not disappoint. They are wonderful and I can't wait to go back again for my next visit. The staff deserves props. Every single person we interacted with were welcoming, friendly and made us feel like family. The interior is gorgeous and comfortable be sure to check out some of the artwork because it's really fascinating. My favorite a modern ish Frida Kahlo with sunglasses and there is also Diego Rivera classic power couple. Throughout the interior is folk art work with a modern touch. Even a hole leading to the restrooms is fascinating. The real star, however, is the food. The five of us and a three year-old and we all scarfed our food. Wow! This new location of CDB is AMAZING! We decided to stop in for brunch, about an hour and 15min before closing time. We were greeted by the host right upon entering the place. He immediately seated us at the back wall, with menus, next to the kitchen. Our server was Paco. He was very customer service oriented. We appreciated his promptness and that he took our order in a good amount of time. The only drawback was that my husband likes his scrambled eggs runny (cooked slightly undone) and he ordered it this way, but the chefs were not able to do this. The host explained that due to the way the griddle is set up, it is impossible to get the runny "soft scramble" eggs that he ordered. They did their best to deliver though, and we appreciated that. Overall, our food was delicious and the mimosas are DELICIOUS! I highly recommend getting the Bottomless Mimosas here. They have Hispanic Inspired juice compliments for the mimosas: Tamarindo, Jamaica, Pineapple, Mango, Cranberry, etc. I normally dont get benedict breakfasts but the Sopes Benes dish looked delicious with a chipotle hollandaise sauce. We ordered: Sopes Benes (beef short rib on sopes with chipotle hollandaise) and Buttermilk Pancakes w/eggs and bacon, plus a side of pancakes. I definitely want to bring my besties and family here. Some of the top food things in san diegon is amazing brunch and Mexican food. So why not combine the two! This place brunch, lunch, and dinner(and a really good happy hour) but I've only been for their brunches. They have bottomless margaritas with 5 different flavors. Theres is a time limit of 1.5 hrs so see how many you can try. My favorite for drinks however are the popsicle margaritas, I usually get horchata. This place does get kind of busy for brunch so come a little early. So food recs their chilaquiles Rojas is such a traditional good meal, their huevos rancheroes are also super filling and the lamb birria is well seasoned. Theyre most known for their churroes and French toast(i had it last time). This time I tried the creme brulee French toast and coconut French toast which were just mid. The staff here are great and though it was hoppin for Sunday brunch, it was pretty fast and such a great vibe. A bit more flashy and trendy feeling than their Encinitas location but same great food and folks! Sit at the bar if it's too busy! And get a cafe de olla! read more
