The croissant was really nicely made and flaky. The golden milk was nicely flavored, with the ginger coming through, and the chili powder on top being a nice addition. I had a morning to myself one day while visiting Indy and I found this cozy little coffee shop on Yelp. The reviews raved about how special it was, so I decided to give it a try. I easily found street parking available (for really cheap) and made my way through the front doors. Funky paintings and a brief climb up a small staircase and I had arrived. The baristas were incredibly friendly, making small talk and providing suggestions for a coffee drink to enjoy. With their guidance, I decided on their pistachio latte with lemon and rosewater. I also got it made with oat milk. I was blown away by their creativity. I mean, c'mon. Pistachio in a latte? You're making dreams I didn't even know I had, come true! After placing my order, I found a little table to pop a squat at. They had free wi-fi and various seating to choose from. Heck, even the bathrooms were really clean. I was easily able to get some work done during my stay and it didn't take too long for my drink to be prepared. I must say, it was amazing!! Indy definitely has a strong latte game going. Among the best lattes that I have ever had have been at Coat Check. My first latte there was a chocolate and sea salt drink that was truly delightful, with a deep richness and warmth for a cold afternoon two winters ago. I recently went after needing a place to study, recollecting the open spaces they had in the Athenaeum. They still had areas sectioned off and distanced, but there were empty spots available throughout the weekday morning I went. For those who are also considering going to work or study, there are areas where the kids at the YMCA are crossing through, if you are easily distracted. I had one of their seasonal lattes with rosewater and orange. It was a little unusual, in a nice way. Definitely not your usual latte if that is not your cup of tea (coffee), but it was still quite enjoyable. Still sort of regretful not getting their chocolate latte, although the barista had mentioned their butterscotch is their top seller. They also had a few decaf beverage options as well. Their food menu was in flux at the time I went, but I think they were getting it remedied soon. I love love love the ambience at coat check coffee. I sometimes find myself thinking of excuses to go downtown just so I can stop in. The best part right now is that the theater upstairs is open for socially-distanced seating. It's huge and airy and peaceful all at once. Kind of the opposite of a lot of cramped coffee shops that only have a handful of tables! I also really appreciate how seriously they are taking safety in the time of covid. I feel really safe coming here knowing everyone will be wearing a mask and there are even markers on the floor to tell you where to stand while waiting for your order. I live for Coat Check Coffee's lattes. They are art, and absolutely worth the seven dollars + well-deserved tip that I pay for one. My favorite is the ginger latte, made with turmeric and topped with chili de arbol. It's familiarly sweet with a slight spicy punch and smooth (locally roasted!) espresso. Coat Check reopened this fall after a temporary COVID closure, and quality is as superb as ever -- AND they've added savory brunchy meals to their menu of delectable goods from Landlocked Baking Co. There's an enormous socially distanced space for seating upstairs in the Athenaeum. I do miss drinking my lattes in real mugs, but I realize paper cups are a COVID-friendly sacrifice for now. If you go, be sure to ask your barista for a rec! I'm so glad Coat Check is back! I visited several weeks ago for a breakfast sandwich and coffee after volunteering at an event downtown. At that time, I was told the biscuits were being swapped for bagels; today I was told they're going back to biscuits! Having had both I can confirm it doesn't matter; both are excellent! The biscuits are large and the sandwich was filling and super satisfying with the addition of the spicy and sweet jalapeno jelly. I hope bagels return once in a while; I enjoyed the texture and my sandwich incorporated fresh veggies, giving me that smug feeling for having something healthy early in the day. What I really love at Coat Check are their lattes. Especially the ginger. Drinks like these are a treat for a black coffee kind of gal like myself but if I'm feeling like I deserve one Coat Check is the place. I was in Indianapolis 3 days and I went to Coat Check Coffee every one of those days. I got hooked on the iced butterscotch latte. Man, what a great drink. Incredible. Not too sweet, either. You can really taste the butterscotch but it does not overwhelm the delicious iced coffee taste. But there's more to this place. It's in the cool historic Atheneum building, and there's plenty of table space and nice restrooms and a few tables outside where you can sit on a nice day, like I'm doing right now. And the staff are friendly and helpful (particularly on the weekend imo). Right now I'm having the coat check cola, an interesting and delicious carbonated drink that I think is espresso and cola and orange peel and maraschino cherry (those last two items atop on a toothpick sitting atop the glass). I think I prefer the butterscotch iced latte but still this place is great. The regular hot coffee smells great. This seems like THE place to get coffee in Indianapolis. It is for me. read more

There ginger latte is the kind of thing you so quickly get addicted to that you have to set limits with yourself you can only order it X number of times a week... absolutely speaking from experience. It's delicious hot or cold and is the perfect amount of spice, tart, sweet with the caffeine kick I need. For food they've got croissant breakfast sandwiches and other sweets. They offer vegan foods as well and I love their vegan breakfast sandwich. Their bakery items come from Landlocked Bakery, with croissants bigger than your head they have some of the best to offer in Indy. The staff are always super kind and ordering is a breeze. They even have a loyalty program where when you accrue points you can get free drinks or discounts. Fantastic location in a majestic historic building nestled in the Mass Ave Arts district. The menu boasts some of the most unique and delicious lattes you'll find downtown. The made-from-scratch pastries are heavenly and almost impossible to pass up. My favorites are Lime Leaf latte and the ginger. I typically shy away from flavored lattes at other coffee shops because they are way too sweet for me, but here I can enjoy a subtly sweet latte and usually can't do anything too sugary. I thought the butterscotch would be a miss for me, but it turned out to be another favorite - semisweet with a nutty profile. The staff is delightful, always welcoming and knowledgeable. One of the more expensive coffee shops for sure, but the company seems to value the well-being of their staff and I'm happy to support a good local business. My only complaint is that the tables now have a 90 minute limit which feels unsettling when working remotely or writing a paper. Nonetheless, Coat Check remains of my go-to spots in Indy! read more

I had visited Coat Check coffee for the first time during my first month in Indy. This city has many great coffee shops, but Coat Check Coffee is one of my favorites. I visited again with my roommates about a week ago, and it was just as amazing as the first time. We loved walking around Mass Ave after grabbing coffee and studying. The sun was shining, making it a beautiful day to explore nearby shops and all that the neighborhood has to offer. We were able to find Mass Ave parking right in front of the Coffee place. The most exciting part of revisiting Coat Check has been experiencing its innovative response to COVID restrictions. Coat Check had lots of couches and fun seating when I first visited. This time, the shop had created a COVID-friendly place to talk and study over coffee in the Athenaeum space above the coffee shop. An employee sits outside the Athenaeum prepared to bring you to a safely distanced table that they will clean before you sit. It might also be helpful to note that customers are limited to stay in the Athenaeum for a maximum of two hours to make sure Coat Check's COVID guidelines are followed. I ordered a chocolate croissant and an iced latte. Both were delicious, and we had a great time studying in the Athenaeum. It was fun to look around the theatre with great music playing over the speaker system at the perfect volume. It was a beautiful and fun atmosphere for studying on a Saturday morning. read more

What a delight. We were in town for a performing arts event across the street and had some time to burn before our show. Lucky for us, there was street parking just a block down the way. On our way to the venue, we spotted a historical building half housing a German restaurant and the other part housing a YMCA and a delightful coffee shop; Coat Check Coffee. The space is big and filled with atypical (yet comfy), mismatched furniture. Even some trendy monstrosity made up of partial couches, desks and had outlets. A perfect option for work space. We ordered a black coffee and by recommendation, a red chai. I'm new to the tea world - don't know a thing about red chai. I will tell you it's great! Spiced with cinnamon and maybe clove? It wasn't overwhelming and I kind of wanted more but we had to go. We also ordered a corn cookie and a lemon cookie. The corn cookie was fascinating. Think sweet, crunch corn bread taste but made into a crunch cookie. So different; almost savory but delicious. The lemon cookie, was covered in powdered sugar, and was soft and cake like. Atheneum is an amazing historic building. Employees friendly and vibe, atmosphere good. tasty drip black coffee with 1 refill then $1 for refills. that's cool. Tables way to small. breakfast sandwich $12 is outrageous for size/quality. it was good but nothing special. overall, pricing is ridicules and out of line with other coffee shops in Indy. For a breakfast sandwich(egg seemed pre fabricated) and black coffee I paid nearly $20 with tax and tip. decent experience but I'll stick to my other options in Indy. To be fair, the only issue I really have here is the pricing. I can afford it but can't justify it with other, tastier more reasonable prices in the downtown area. Obsessed! I had a work meeting here the other day and at first I wasn't sure if I could justify the price for a cup of coffee- I ordered the pistachio latte and did not regret my choice as it was well worth it. Be sure to watch them make your drink, it is fun and they drag a citrus around the edge of your cup and you can expect an 'insta-worthy' cup of Joe. The only reason why I don't give the full five stars was because I felt that the interior was lacking a bit- while the chairs were comfortable and there was plenty of seating space the fun chairs and tables seemed out of place in the lobby- maybe a new layer of paint or carpet - but that maybe beyond their control since they are inside of another organization's building. I definitely plan to be back - my coworker highly recommends the butterscotch latte so I must try it! read more
