I found it to be more similar to what I would call a turnover, but I found in my research that hand pies are actually quite common and have less flaky crust. They just have more crust proportionally and have less filling, making them thin and easy to eat without the content spilling out. I absolutely loved my caramel pecan pie! I also got to try my husband's cherry pie, which I also was a fan of. Both of the pies were pleasantly not as sweet (or fake tasting) as I expected.
