I'm happy to drop 5 stars on this place. I went in for lunch today unexpectedly (was looking for something else). Got the poc chuc plate. The pork was really great. Slightly chewy and a little crunchy but moist at the same time and flavored really well. The tortillas were so hot I had to let them cool for a while before I could handle them but scooping up that pork with the nice black beans, rice and veggies had me in foodie nirvana. What really kicked this review into 5 star territory though is that killer salsa they bring out in a squeeze bottle. It's habanero with jalapeño and something else. It's spicy (but not burn your mouth off) and is so packed with flavor. I squeezed a lot of this on to each bite and it was heaven. Staff (owners?) are friendly people and despite the seedy part of 16th near Mission I gladly would and will return again. read more

When I took a bite, the meat was still cold in the middle and clearly had not been cooked properly, which is a serious food safety concern. * The burrito came with cheese, even though the menu only lists rice, beans, meat, and pico de gallo. Such a hidden gem in the Mission. I've gone here at least 10 times now, and I always get one thing - poc chuc panuchos. After my friend Leevan introduced me to them, my life has changed for the better and I've never gone back. So great! Please brave the schlep near 16th & Mission, this place is a gem and super affordable. The panuchos are amazing. Also had a pork/cheese empanada - a fried gooey deliciousness. The details make it great - roasted salsas, pickled onions & cabbage as toppings - really elevates the meal. I ordered these two items plus chips and salsa - $13 for everything and it was too much to finish. Inside is super clean and simple, but much more pleasant than a typical taqueria. Nice and clean taqueria spot near the 16th St Mission bart station! Ordering was easy and I was pleased that cash was accepted as someone day tripping in SF. The cashier was straightforward and very friendly. FOOD: * Super burrito -- I chose carne asada as my protein and got this to-go. To my surprise, this came with some yummy chips and spicy salsa. One downside was that the salsa was watery. The texture of the carne asada was perfectly fine, but there could have been more marinade and spices. It tasted more like a simple salt and pepper seasoning, which resembled normal steak for tacos. Pico de gallo was more like chopped tomatoes, so that was a little lackluster. I did enjoy how the contents of this burrito were not too salty nor oily. There was a good amount of avocado too! Friendly. Clean. Very casual and a perfect lunch spot. I was telling a store employee down the street how I've been into menudo lately. They said this is the best place for it! Here it goes by the name "mondongo." Can confirm...the menudo is a solid 9.5/10. Didn't need to salt, shined on its own, but with the accoutrements it was really a treat. I love a word-of-mouth neighborhood rec. Also, they have organic ketchup, lol, for what it's worth (just a good sign). I'll be back to see what else they have going on. read more

It's funny how walking on Mission Street from 24th to 16th is such a consistent cavalcade of activity from hot dogs sizzling on a makeshift grill to scooters that graze you without concern to the glut of shoppers perusing produce and cheap merch and narrowing the sidewalk path to practically nothing. It gets noticeably quieter once you round the corner eastward on 16th. I barely even paid attention to this Mayan spot until I saw someone in the window eating something that looked like menudo. It turned out it wasn't menudo but its hearty $21 Yucatanean cousin, Mondongo. It was a beef belly tripe soup with cilantro and diced onions on the side (photo: https://yelp.to/9mgYJIeA6X). It had real thickness and plenty of gelatinous tripe. I decided I should have something crunchier to have with the soup and ordered the $5.25 Carnitas Panucho. I love looking for new hole-in-wall eateries, and being in the Mission, I just had to find a good Mexican place. Usually, my go-to's are La Taqueria and El Farolito, but I just wanted to try something new since I always come there. And luckily this spot came up. This was a fantastic spot. I got the Ranuchos since I've never had those before. It's essentially a Masa tortilla with refried black beans, lightly fried lettuce, cabbage, tomato, pickled onion, avocado, and a choice of meat. I ended up getting the camerones and the Poc-Chuc meats. The camerones was so good. The amount of things they put on top of the masa tortilla was delicious and filling. I love shrimp anything, so eating this was a little treat for me. And the Poc-chuc, which is culturally a Mayan pork meat, was delicious and it had a good chew to it that wasn't too dry. I wish it was a bit more tender but the overall flavor of the ranuchos was really good. Everything combined was delicious and I would definitely make my way back here again! read more

Delicious homemade food in this hole in the wall spot. I was in the area with my dog looking for a quick bite. I came across this restaurant that supposedly had outside seating, but there actually wasn't anymore. I called in and they still allowed for me and my very well behaved doggie to eat inside :) Cochinita pibil Panucho (5/5) I'm still dreaming about this. The flavor in the meat was sooo flavorful and it was melt in my mouth. It starts with corn masa shaped like a sope. It had refried beans, lettuce and tomato. Next time I'm here I'm ordering 2 of these for sure. Empanas (5/5) I can't remember what meat I got but I throughly enjoyed these as well. Authentic mexican in the mission Super well-priced. A little but divey (but in a good way). 3 of us went for lunch - not crowded at all. I ordered the cheese and pork empanada and a panucho (with Pac Chuc - which is citrus marinated pork). Both were excellent and it made for a perfect light-ish lunch. I think they were both around $4.50. I also ordered a side of beans - they were good, but not as good as the mains, so I would skip the beans next time. I would love to try a tamale and or the Milanese entree. My sister had the chicken quesadilla and commented that they did not skimp on the avocado. Cocina Mayah came recommended from friends in the know and it did not disappoint. There's something on the menu for everyone but we went for the regional specialties for sure. We both had panuchos, which are like a tostada but fried to order from a fresh tortilla and topped with beans, lettuce/cabbage, pickled onion, avocado and a little tomato - with your choice of meat. I had one with cochinita pibil (succulent roast pork cooked with orange and achiote/annatto) and one with poc-chuc (grilled pork marinated in beer). Both were outstanding. The cochinita was juicy and rich.. and the poc chuc had excellent flavor from the beer and the grill, plus a really great smoky (not sweet) bbq sauce. A squeeze of lime and maaaaaaan... so good. Ask for extra napkins and don't sleep on the habanero salsa. It's spicy, so a little dab will do ya, but it really balances the richness of the cochinita and just elevates everything that much more. We also ordered the black bean and pork soup (frijol con puerco). The pork in the soup were ribs that just fell right off the bone. Spoon tender. Plus it came with fresh handmade tortillas on the side with an array of toppings for you to customize as you wish. Diced radish, avocado, onion, a habanero pepper, cilantro and more of the fantastic smoky sauce. It's a big serving and it was delicious. It would be the perfect thing for the next chilly day that comes along. Do yourself a favor and stop in to this little hidden gem. You won't be disappointed. The Poc chuc dish was nutritionally well balanced, ingredients quality was good, the quantity was good enough for 2 people hence the price(~$20) was justified. You can make every bite unique by combining different ingredients. The spicy sauce on the side gave a new flavor to the items on the dish Tortillas were freshly made. The last tortilla was too moist because of the aluminum foil. The amount of veggies in the dish is refreshing, primarily included avocado (3 slices), cabbage, pickled onion(highlight), coriander and lettuce (2 big slices) The rice was well cooked and soft. Overall the dish was good but not exceptional, it didn't blow my mind. It's a good one time try but i won't crave for coming back for this dish. Therefore i am giving it a 3 star. read more

Shame on me for not reviewing this earlier, considering how many times I have been here. I can't attest to the breakfast, though I have had their french toast and pancakes and both were hella bomb. As for food, I always always only order panuchos. They are well known for their poc-chuc (pork marinated in OJ). Their meat, as my friend puts it well, taste like it has been marinated for days. It is so flavorful and juicy. There is just no reason for me to eat mexican food anymore, though to be fair, I am indifferent about Mexican food, and this kind of cuisine can be considered different. The corn base they use for their panuchos is divine, it is deep fried and spread with their black bean puree. They put their pickled onions, and their veggies along with your choice of meat. Speaking of which, their refried black beans is divine. I freak out whenever, people leave that on their plate. It is such a rich and flavorful dish. I always feel really good after eating it, in the way, that you may have had a hearty soup made by your mom, kind of way. I like the pickled onions and all the garnish and veggies they put on. I really have to try their other dishes, but my god, panuchos always hits the spot no matter what when I am hungry. The juicy meat, the crunch of their pickled onions, add both sharp and refreshing qualities to their food, with the heartiness but not heaviness of say, Mexican cuisine. read more

Stopped into this restaurant while my car was getting washed across the street and I'm so glad I did! Got one poc-chuc panucho and genuinely I could have had five more if I wasn't trying to diet. I've never had a panucho before either but it was so delicious! The meat was tender, flavorful, and juicy and all of the other ingredients complimented it so well. This place is truly a hidden gem and one of our favorite places. We've even taken the kids to eat a family dinner here. We always order carnitas for me and the kids which is like thick cut pork belly that is perfectly seasoned and cooked. Eat it with rice or the freshly made tortillas and fresh avocado and it's heavenly. It's not fancy but it's delicious. My husband always ordered their special dish which is like the carnitas just more vinegar so it has that tangy taste and he gets a fresh habanero pepper on the side. The salsa and chips are also super fresh and not bagged chips. The salsa is chopped fresh and has tons of cilantro and garlic. Super yummy. Parking can be hard but worth it. We've even bought it to go and eaten it in car. Bonus their coconut pudding in the fridge is super light and refreshing. Our kids love it as an after meal treat read more

I've only been twice so far but really like Cocina Mayah and want to support these type of independent businesses. The folks who work here are really friendly and the first time I got a breakfast burrito to go since I was headed to In Chan Kajaal park nearby. The burrito is nice and cheesy and the potatoes are crisp (though I typically prefer hash browns to potato chunks in my breakfast burritos). The second trip I had the spinach omelette and it was stuffed with a lot of spinach and that salsa they offer up is fantastic! Definitely going to add this to my normal rotation.
