The calamari was an excellent rendition of a classic pub food. The tzatziki sauce was excellent as well - I wish they would put the same effort into the tartar sauce! Not greasy in the least. My husband ordered one fried oyster, but because they were tiny that day, they gave him three. The oysters tasted great, but they were quite greasy. Like there was a pool of grease under it, and lots in the batter. Luckily, my husband doesn't get skeezed out by greasy deep fried food. I am generally not a fan of deep fried food, but I thought they did a pretty good job. Are they the best? No. But definitely better than about 90% of the crap out there being sold as fish and chips! But what really blew me away was the quality of the fish. This is the closest thing to a proper English fish and chips in Vancouver. The fish isn't beer-battered, but lightly battered and fried (don't get me wrong, I'm a beer batter kind of guy, but it can be quite greasy, and it's not the traditional kind for those that care). The chips were proper chips with real thickness and fluffiness inside, as opposed to "fries" that are served so often. Finally, the color on everything was a beautiful gold instead of a dark brown, signifying that the oil was clean, despite quite literally all its food being of the fried variety. I've ordered from Cockney Kings more times I can count since then -- both for online delivery and in person at the restaurant. Each time, the quality has been consistent to a tee. Order at the counter for dine-in (12 seats available) or take-out. Kitsilano's gorgeous park and beach is just west on Cornwall so easy to find somewhere to have lunch and watch the seaside activity. My order today was one piece halibut and chips ($16), although i considered the haddock, which is about $3 cheaper. Condiments and sides that used to be included in any F&C order, like tartar sauce and coleslaw, are now an additional cost, which seems a little cheap, considering what you're paying for a plate of chips and one piece of fish. Not even a little slice of lemon! But I'm not going to quibble with F&C this good! I suppose a lot of coleslaw and tartar sauce is wasted if included and the diner doesn't eat it, so maybe it's best to charge and only those who really want it will order it. Of course they offer mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce as well. Lots of other items on the menu, such as burgers, tacos, salads, onion rings and let's not forget poutine. So happy to have gorgeous British-style fish and chips in the neighbourhood again. Light, crsip batter, not soggy or greasy, and perfect hand-cut chips and a plentiful portion. We came to visit Vancouver for the first time and ended up eating here every night! The food was so good, we tried the chicken, haddock, and halibut but it was the gravy that really took it over the top. So delicious! The staff is so sweet and friendly, they made the experience even better. My son said that everyone always talks about how friendly Canadians are and this one restaurant was the thing that convinced him it was true. The restaurant doesn't have a ton of seating but the turn around is always quick and we never had to wait long for a table. They were busy but still made sure we had everything we needed. We shared a small mushy peas side. As soon as we finished our water another bottle appeared at our table without asking. Food was delicious! Fish was perfectly battered and cooked. Fries were fresh cut and also cooked to perfection. I hadn't had mushy peas since a trip to London many years ago, so didn't know what to expect. They were good. Portions are big and we ended up taking half of our meal home. The same seemed to be true for many people as well. The restaurant was bright and clean, but a little bit noisy. That's not surprising considering every table was occupied and the line was out the door. I don't write reviews very often, but this was such pleasant experience that I wanted to share.
